I LOVE this place, my favorite place in Mexico, MO. The staff is always really friendly and their burgers are great. My absolute favorite dish there is the gyro skillet, I get it every time and it's always delicious and filling. But don't forget to save room for their homemade style pie! Then walk over to the cinema and see a show. :) (Don't be fooled by the exterior, it's nice inside!)

First time in Mexico (MO), looking at furniture stores on a weekday, came in for lunch. (Winner: Greentop Furniture in Clark, MO, an Amish place owned by Elmer Yoder.) Assuming your expectations are set properly for a place called "Highway 54 Diner," it's great. I got a whole fried catfish, and chose salad (was fine...and comes with crackers?) and mashed potatoes for the included sides. I'll admit my surprise (I'm not from the midwest) when the waitress asked for my choice of gravy on the potatoes (chicken, brown, or white); couldn't resist requesting white. Had a bite of patty melt, too. Most of it was average for such food (2-3 stars), but the catfish was fantastic--moist, good-tasting flesh, nice crispy exterior (obviously not as light and delicate as the tempura in Japan, but not the excessively battered/oily type either)--didn't even need the lemon or tartar sauce. Didn't get to try the homemade pie, though, since this was an entire, whole catfish, and the white gravy potatoes were pretty filling, too. Waitress was nice. So: if you like fried catfish, do it; if not, it's ok; if none of this sounds good, you won't like it.

I generally have the fried chicken salad and have no complaints, but others in my party have had complaints each time we have eaten here. Burgers taste "strange", hair in food, etc. The one complaint I have personally is the bacon...it is terrible. Possibly the worst I have ever eaten. Everyone else in my party felt the same. With that being said, it is probably still one of the better places in town to eat (very sad). Atmosphere is pleasant and the waitstaff have always been friendly.

Just to be clear: This is the diner where G&D Steakhouse once was; it is similarly named to another diner (on Liberty Street) in Mexico, and to one in Fulton. I do not know if this diner is associated with either of the others. Anyway, Highway 54 Diner has a huge menu of several pages; the servings of catfish, pasta, and salmon are especially large; despite the long menu, everything seems freshly prepared. The vegetarian omelets are made to order (if you can't eat green peppers or tomatoes, no problem), and the drink portions are generous. Sides are of a good variety & well prepared, not just slung onto the plate. This place gets very busy at lunchtime and on Sundays after church. You'll see everybody in town there. Also it is busy on Sunday evenings when families stop on their way back from Lake of the Ozarks or Mark Twain Lake. I'd give it more stars if something could be done about the noise level and if it offered more vegetarian/vegan choices (but there may not be a demand for the latter in an area where meat is king). You won't find friendlier waitstaff anywhere else, that's for sure! Prices: extremely low for the quantity of food served. PIES: I didn't order any pie, but the waiter said the pies are made fresh by the owner's wife, and they surely did look delicious. UPDATE 05-04-12: In response to the one other reviewer ("Roxanne") as of April 2012, I'd like to say that if you have those problems in a restaurant, you MUST tell the server, manager, or owner right away. Restaurant people do not want "bad" bacon or non-food items in their customers' food. (This location has a very long reputation to uphold, and the people who run it are extremely responsive to comment.) NOW FULLY NON-SMOKING! Just wanted to put that in, because I learned it recently. Also recently, I had an opportunity to try the cottage-cheese crepes. Wow! As simple as these sound, they are really something, esp. at breakfast time. The omelets remain good any time of the day, and the servings remain large and brought with a smile. You will not find friendlier restaurant people anywhere.
