Las Palmas has some pretty good Mexican food this side of town! Now, I generally like to judge a Mexican restaurant on their salsa and their margaritas, but for Las Palmas, I cannot fail to mention their fajitas, as well. Let us begin with chips and salsa. It is adequate, a little spicy and, at times, not chunky enough for my liking. Their chips are good, but many times they are not the quickest to serve you a second helping (which is probably in my best interest, but at the time makes me very hungry). Round 2, margaritas! Las Palmas has excellent margaritas. They really get into their recipes, too. Throughout the seasons, I know I've tried a cranberry margarita here and a watermelon one, also. They also have good pitcher options to share amongst friends! Well, the moment I've been waiting to tell you about- the fajitas. They have a delicious steak fajita (the chicken is a bit bland). But they have this meal for two under the fajita section for two- it is steak, chicken, shrimp, chorizo, with onions and peppers in the skillet. And you get the tortillas and guac and sour cream. It is excellent! Again, the chicken part is usually avoided by both parties involved in my case, but the other components are amazing! Service here is good. It is incredibly fast, which is sad sometimes as I like to take time on my meal and enjoy good company! The atmosphere is typical Mexican restaurant. Sometimes, you are seated up front by the big window and you feel like you are on display to all the world! But it is okay.

Had dinner with my boyfriend here tonight, and it was a good time! (+): - Free chips & salsa (which had a nice kick to it!) - Queso ($3.75) came out hot and pretty tasty, came with a nice amount of chiles. - Enchiladas verdes ($9.50) were good. The green rice was new to me, but I liked how it tasted. Apparently arroz verde is a thing? - The bf ate up his 3 fish tacos and sides ($11.95) - Service was super friendly! And attentive. Our glasses always had water. - Not too expensive. We weren't sure we were going to hit the $25 mark (we just barely did by $0.20) to use the "$6 off a $25 purchase" coupon on the back of all those Shop n Save receipts. - Las Palmas participates in the GoodDining program, so you can discreetly generate a donation to the charity of your choice while eating out. :) (-): - We were on the west side and so finding the restrooms was a little confusing. There was one for each gender on the bar side (in contrast to Erika's comment about a unisex restroom? never found that), but the doors were very colorfully painted, which was cool. - Uhh... the menus were a little old/chewed up from use? I don't know, I don't have many complaints about this place. Pretty happy with this place so far. [Edit: 10/02/14] Minus a star because it has been almost a month and a half, and the donation never got credited to my chosen charity. I contacted GoodDining weeks ago and no word. The main reason why I even visited the restaurant in the first place was because I saw that it participated in the program.

Much better than OK! Very good! I must update my review because I came here a second time and loved it. The tacos were good the first time around, and this time I thought they were even better, and seemed to have plenty of toppings on the meat. I had planned to order just tacos a la carte but I didn't see a section of the menu to do that - other than the lunch menu (I was there at dinner time). I suppose I could have asked the server but instead I got the plate of 3 traditional tacos. The sides of beans and rice were very good this time, I thought improved from the last time I ate here. I also really liked the salsa. It's a thin salsa, not super chunky, but not watery, It has a nice bright flavor - I'd say mild-to-medium in spice level.

I remember the Woodson location as being really good. This location many years later was just meh. The music was too loud, the margarita a little too strong, the food just kind of bland. I got the shredded chicken burritto that comes with rice and beans. I was hungry so it hit the spot. Service was mediocre and so was my tip. I will probably stick with Diablitos and Milagro from now on.

I've been coming to the Maplewood location since I moved to town and I have never been disappointed. Quality Mexican food at an affordable price. Open for lunch & dinner. Good Eats & Cheers!

ve been to this place a few times when I'm visiting friends in the area. The food and service is always good, my wife usually gets the steak quesadilla and I stick with the steak burrito. Additionally, the chips and salsa are always fresh and flavorful.

If wanting to make love to your food is wrong I don't want to be right! Best fish tacos I've ever had. Not the classic breadding but it's so amazing. The guacamole is so fresh and the black beans are delectable. I may come back for lunch tomorrow, don't judge me.

1st experience and I loved the hot green salsa, which you can't get at many places. The combo platter was nice & the chips hot. The Margarita weak & was disappointed that they had no Mole. I've only found 1 restaurant in St. Louis with mole sauce, why?

Not bad. This restaurant is along a block of restaurants. Inside it's comfortable, and the service is good. I had a couple tacos, which were nicely seasoned. Didn't try a margarita but my friend enjoyed hers quite a bit. Queso was a little bland, but the salsa was nice and not too spicy. If in the area, I wouldn't mind going back to grab a bite to eat. Not the best Mexican I've had, but for the Midwest, it's pretty good and reasonably priced.

Wow, this place was way better than I expected! It's a tad pricey, but in the end I saw why, as the food was definitely a step up from the normal mexican restaurant. Check out the photos I posted, so good!

What a pleasant surprise. I can not tell how many times I have passed Las Palmas by and never gave them a second thought. The other night I was craving Mexican, before a very exclusive elite event at Pie O'My. My time was limited so I stopped in for a quick dinner at Las Palmas. In just one visit, I can tell you I am already a fan. Their salsa served with the chips has a nice spicy bite to it and our basket of chips were warm. Warm chips are always a nice touch. It was Happy Hour, so how could I say no to a Margarita with no salt? It was refreshing, but I agree with Christie S. it could of been a little stronger. When experiencing a Mexican restaurant for the first time, I usually go with a combination plate so I can try a couple different things. Tonight a did a soft chicken taco and a beef burrito. They were served with cilantro rice and re-fried beans. I was impressed that the burrito was shredded beef and not the typical ground beef. It was stuffed pretty full and the meat was tenderer then some BBQ places that serve shredded beef. The chicken taco, was garnished with lettuce and tomato. The chicken was seasoned well enough, that I did not need to add any salsa for flavor. The sides were very impressive for me. I am not a fan of cilantro and their cilantro rice won me over. It was moist and the cilantro flavoring was not overpowering. It was light and refreshing. I liked the fact that the beans was a mixture of whole beans and smashed beans. So many places serve up re-fried beans that look like brown mashed potatoes. They were great as a dip with the extra chips we had left in our basket. The service was great. They were doing the typical team service that you see at many of the Mexican restaurants. One of the other male servers, just stopped by to make sure every thing was to our satisfaction. When I am craving inexpensive Mexican, I'll drive to Maplewood to satisfy my fix and I three Mexican restaurants that I can walk to from my house. So what does that tell you?

Fun atmosphere and tasty margaritas. Salsa was a bit runny but guacamole was delicious. Just had drinks with friends so can't give a full review of food. Colorful venue and great service. Restaurant is also in good walking distance from other nice restaurants/bars in Maplewood area.

Hooray for different! I have plenty of Mexican restaurant options around me that offer the same old, same old ground beef-type of combination plates. How refreshing to find one that's a step up from the rest. First, they serve a damn fine margarita. Could have been a tad bit stronger (oh, couldn't it always?) but I'm pretty sure this didn't come from a mix. Their salsa was also a little unique smokey, spicy number (although chips are clearly store bought). Giant margaritas came for the $4 happy hour price before 7 pm. Happy hour, indeed! The food wildly exceeded my expectations. I got a combo plate with a cheese enchilada and shredded beef chimichanga. The cheese enchilada was so flavorful, definitely the best I've had in a while. The chimichanga was also great, probably because they put beans and cheese in there with the beef for extra flavor. Combos came with beans and rice (which is green, my friends) - both very good. When have you ever left stuffed getting a combo plate with only two items? I can't remember a time...but I left fat and happy from Las Palmas. Muy bien!

This is just me as a local speaking, but I love this place. I have to yet to go to anywhere in st. Louis with such great Mexican atmosphere and food. Excellent selection of margaritas. I don't personally sing, but the place is known for its karaoke. Occasionally there is a mariachi guitar player who plays, which is really an amazing experience to see. Food wise, I usually get the tacos, but they aren't your normal tacos.

Ordered delivery which goes through another company. Upon receipt of the food we discovered some of our order was wrong and called Las Palmas. The lady that answered the phone was extremely rude and informed me that even though they messed up the order and sent it with the delivery company she would not issue a refund and it was my own responsibility to contact the delivery company, tell them what was missing, and send them back. DO NOT ORDER DELIVERY!!! Food was cold, incorrect, and expensive for what you get. On top of that of your order is wrong you can count on rude employees and another hour wait. On the good side, the salsa is good and the cilantro rice is alright.

The best steak nachos in the Midwest. The service is a little slow, but not a reason to not go!

I love this place. I'm a vegetarian, so my favorite entree is the cheese enchilada. Splurge for the las palmas margarita. It's worth it. All the servers and bartenders are amazingly friendly. You'll leave with new friends.

Went for dinner and drinks with a friend on Saturday. We got a small pitcher of margarita. It was a lot for two people. Unfortunately it wasn't strong at all. I told the waitress after the fact because I wanted another drink. She came back with very strong margaritas for me and my friends. We got cheese dip and it was very good. The salsa for the chips is awful though. We didn't like it at all. I got a shredded chimichanga and it was good. No complaints for typical American style Mexican food - not the best but pretty standard when comparing other Mexican restaurants around the country. It was karaoke night. We didn't know that when we came. It was both of our first times there. It started at 9:30 and was a really good time. There was a very large group sitting next to us so it was very entertaining. Would recommend for karaoke if you're looking for fun or even a good laugh.

I've had lots of lunches at LP in the three years I've been going there. The food is okay, and it's recently been improved. The service was great for a long time but recently I've had lousy service that was slow and incorrect orders. I've sat with only a water for ten minutes or more while the two waiters get caught up with the current customers. This has happened 3 or 4 times since July. What happened to the chips, salsa and water lady? She was great. I'm kinda done with LP. Sorry guys.

Horrible service every time I go. every time. I saw the server 3 times: to order drinks and food, to drop off the food, and then to get our bill and pay (which take the server forever to get you your bill). The food is a little on the pricey side for this type of Mexican and honestly not that good.

Stopped in for lunch at the new location on Washington. They've only been open since Wednesday so my expectations were low. I ordered the mucho nachos. They were fantastic! No difference in wait staff or quality of food from the Maplewood locale. Everyone in my party commented how tasty the refried beans were. I cant wait to try them again. Stop in...You won't be disappointed!

A sign that a place is good is if I can't stop thinking about it- that's what happened after I went to Las Palmas. Now some have said the atmosphere is meh, but for me- it's my kind of place- a little quirky, and a little divey! I love the paintings of Mexican wrestlers on the bathroom doors, the beer bottle tops under the table glass, and all of their other colorful decorations. It's a fun bar, cheap drinks and friendly staff. We were welcomed after asked if it was our first time- they gave great suggestions off the menu. I went with a top shelf margarita which was huge, and really delicious- not too sweet and gave me a good buzz. The traditional tacos were to.die.for - awesome flavor. The beans- yum- not refried, they were home cooked beans and extremely flavorful. The salsa was fresh and went perfectly with the chips. This is a great casual dinner spot, and I'd also go here to have a beer and watch a game. You can get coupons on the back of your Shop N Save receipt that are $6-10 off- good deal! They have kareoke as well- can't wait to check it out.

Everything is delicious here and I especially love the warm atmosphere. Just a place that makes you feel good to hang out there and have a drink. I am a fan of karaoke on Saturdays, best karaoke atmosphere in town.

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in StL!!!! It is just amazing. If you love cilantro rice---this is your place. It may not look like it from the storefront, but this is a little gem of Maplewood. The service is always spot on. The food is always served just right. I love their cilantro ranch dressing. I get it as a side when I order enchiladas and it is just wonderful. The staff is almost all Mexican. One time I ordered a side of cilantro dressing and the server brought out salt, which we both laughed over. They have karaoke here I forget which night of the week. I am not a big karaoke goer, but it certainly was fun and the group of friends I went with and I had a great time. Their food is reasonably priced--especially lunch. Overall, solid food and service and won't dissapoint.

I just moved into the area and have been looking for good Mexican. Las Palmas doesn't disappoint! The margaritas were delicious and our bartender was awesome. He was entertaining and attentive without being pushy. I ordered the chicken chimichanga and it came with the refried beans and rice. I usually don't eat the rice as i don't find it flavorful but Las Palma's knocked it out of the park. I will definitely be back.

Being one of the only places open on New Year's Day, and one of the few decent places participating on Restaurant.com , we gave Las Palmas a try. We both ordered the chicken burrito, and it was very good. The salsa was also tasty with just a good amount of kick. The points missing from a 5-star rating: The chips weren't home-made and there wasn't any salsa variety. I'd also have to try some other menu items and I don't see any fish taco's listed.

I wish I could give this Las Palmas six, no, TEN stars! This is my favorite place in the whole world for Mexican food. The queso -- hands down -- is the nectar of the gods. I could drink it from the bowl. (I will not admit if I ever actually have...) The prices are great, the portions are large but not obnoxious, and everything is delicious. I have gone here several times in one week, several weeks in a row. It's my favorite. Also -- there is a "combo" plate option which provides TWO choices for the price of one option! It's the best. The salsa is also good -- it's medium not hot and pretty thin. I hate chunky or spicy salsa so this is my preference. Also -- the drinks are heavy and inexpensive, the ambiance is funky and fun, and the people are all nice. It's just the best.

Really good fish tacos. Killer black beans. And good service to boot. This may be my new favorite lunch place. Oh and the salsa is fresh!

I'll go again. Got the nachos, they were pretty good - I like that guacamole was creamier. Good stuff. Only real complaint and the reason it didn't earn 4 stars was that the consistency of the margaritas is like a crunchy snow cone texture. It really should be more of a fine Slurpee style slush consistency. Difficult to drink - chunks of ice don't go up through the straw. Otherwise, we will go back - but we will also keep trying other places...

I met a friend for lunch. I was a little early, and the first patron for lunch. I selected a nice, roomy table for 4. Be aware that you get a complimentary basket of chips and saucer of salsa. Anything more than that first basket costs $1.50. The new menu relegates the lunch specials to about 1/6 of the back bottom page -- not nearly as prominent as the old menu. My dining partner got the three enchiladas lunch special (one chicken, one beef, one cheese), which comes with refried beans, cilantro rice and a small corn cake. It was massive platter for $7.50. She loved it. I got a chicken quesadilla, ordered from the appetizer category. It was $7.95 and came with pico, guac and sour cream. I can live without refried beans and cilantro rice, so I was happy with my quesadilla. It was very good, quite filling, and I took half home.

Was in town and meeting a friend for dinner. We like to go a different restaraunt every time we meet, so I usually grab a restaurant.com certificate and check out something new. Las Palmas is smack dab in the middle of Maplewood on Manchester, blink and you may miss it. It looks tiny from the outside when you walk in, there is a long bar with a few tables (seems super tiny), and then you realize there is a whole other room. Not very busy for 6:30pm on a Thursday, so we were seated right away. Our server was charming, polite, and funny. Chips and salsa were dropped at the table as soon as we sat down. We ordered the queso fundido as an app. It was GREAT, nice spice, very cheesy, just not enough tortillas! (The chips worked too) For dinner, My friend had the soup and a taco. She liked, but nothing to write home about. Now I went with the 12oz chipotle rib-eye. The rib-eye was cooked PERFECT, PERFECT, PERFECT! It was a boneless thin cut, very little gristle, came out perfect med-rare. The chipotle sauce was not over-whelming and very tastey, I could have licked my plate. We skipped on drinks (we were heading to a brewery later, and didn't want to get sauced early) So I can't help you with the margaritas. Without drinks, and after $10off, the bill was only $26. Completely worth it! My only 2 complaints: 1. We were seated under the a/c vent. Kind of chilly, but not enough to relocate. If you are a slow eater, and are going to be there for a while, you might want a different table. 2. The bathroom. 1 stall, unisex, and definitely funky. I know they say you can judge a kitchen by it's bathroom. I prefer not to think about this and focus on how tasty the rib-eye was (This kept it from being 4 stars) Not sure I will go back, I live out of town and even though I visit 5-6 times a year, I like going someplace new. But I definitely think they are worth checking out.

I got food poisoning from here a few years ago so I've been reluctant to go back even thought I live in walking distance. My dad really like this places for some reason. I think mostly because it's cheap. We went there last night with my dad and it was a disappointment. We never got our appetizer. Couldn't taste much tequila in our house margaritas. When we were all done and ready for the check our server was no where in sight. Our plates were clean and stacked up. We chatted for a bit and then I decided to get up to go find out server to ask for the check. He was socializing in the bar with other customers. Not talking orders or anything. Socializing. The food is always mediocre. I wish this place didn't suck so much. It's a very disappointing neighborhood spot.

Wonderfully good! The salsa was great and the queso was a hit! Loved the enchiladas too! Only do not give 5 stars bc I feel it was sightly overpriced.

We used to go to Cherokee Street for Mexican food until we found Las Palmas in Maplewood! We come here at least once a week now. The carne pork is out of this world! The salsa is delicious. The margaritas are freshly squeezed! A+!

I don't care too much for Mexican food, but I am a fan of Las Palmas. I always seem to have trouble with ordering seafood at Mexican restaurants, but Las Palmas has been able to perfect the blend of rustic spices in juxtaposition with the marine flavor of the seafood. Fish tacos are great. The shrimp is fantastic. Anything with crab is a must have. My wife is very judgmental of Mexican pork, but Las Palmas has been able to combine the right amount of spice and Verde salsa to make this dish memorable. Margaritas are alright, but could benefit by erring on the side of tequila. The ambiance is pretty typical. Brightly colored walls with decor from south of the border. Booths are wooden. Nothing to write home about. The service has not disappointed me on the three occasions I have visited. The wait staff never lets the beverages go empty and seems to genuinely care if you are enjoying your experience. They definitely warrant a minimum 30% gratuity on the service alone. I would definitely recommend this establishment to those looking for delicious authentic Mexican food in a clean casual atmosphere.

got the takeout. by the time we opened it at home it was kind of gross but we ate some anyway. I wish that was the worst part. I woke up with upset stomach and guess what - have been on the toilet EVERY 2 HOURS TODAY. MY HUSBAND ALSO HAS DIARRHEA. THANKS LAS PALMAS! funny but so true

  • Chelsea B.

NO chihuahua cheese! Which is basically a deal breaker. Chips and salsa were the best part, I ordered the corn tomato soup, good flavor but too watery. I also got the carnita enchilada, disgusting. Pork had zero flavor and was fatty. I would not recommend.

  • Katherine B.

As my friend pointed out, test number one of a Mexican restaurant is the smell, and when I walked in, I just wanted to say, I'll take 1 of whatever it smells like in here! The enchiladas were great - pollo verde, you could really taste the cilantro. The fajitas were good too. The beef was spiced perfectly, savory, not even particularly spicy, but just good. Great price, too - a party of 4 dined for under $60.

Honestly just nothing special here. The place was empty except for my table and I still think we saw the waitress 2 times. The food was average and just didn't stand out. It's a decent lunch or dinner choice if you are in the area but I wouldn't go out of my way.

  • Hayley W.

The salsa is awesome! It has a ton of flavor! The muchos nachos were decent, not enough cheese dip but they were still good. Chicken was a little dry on the nachos as well! The pork chimichanga was awesome! Huge portion and prices are reasonable! Service was good! Will be coming back!

The first one is free... As we perused our lunch menu choices at $6.50 each, we noticed in the menu that it's noted only the first basket of chips with salsa is complimentary and additional chips are $1.50 each. So be careful when they ask if you want more chips. The food was ok. I had Lunch Special #3 - chicken enchilada and beef chimi. The beef chimi was not as crispy as some others, but it tasted ok. You do get a lot for the $6.50. Your lunch special comes with refried beans, cilantro rice, pico de gallo, and a scoop of sweet corn cake. So for food that was ok, it was still a great value. Typical decor. See pictures. For the value sake, I'd like to come back and try their margaritas and some apps. I too miss El Scorcho.

Goddamit I really want to love Las Palmas. I love Mexican food, and really enjoy eating it, and this place is super close to my house, but this place is not good. Have eaten here several times since they have been open, and generally feel kind of crappy, slightly nauseous and not very hungry hours later. I know this is not how you should feel after eating Mexican food. Dirty kitchen? Old and/or undercooked ingredients? Dont know what it is, but I know its this place. Las Palmas, I'm done with you! P.S. still burping up my torta al pastor 7 hours later!!

  • Jeffrey F.

I should have heeded the warnings of all my Yelp compatriots and simply skipped this venue. The place seems a little bit dirty. I could literally hear my shoes sticking to the floor as we walked. Maybe it wasn't because it was dirty. I'll give the benefit of the doubt here, given that it was rather humid. The decor here is very loud. Some have said festive. I just say loud. I felt like I was in Mexico. Not the nice touristy part of Mexico. But the seedy underbelly where you don't drink the water, you keep to yourself, and you make eye contact with nobody. Lest you wind up with a slit throat. Mind you the staff here is wonderful. We were seated promptly. Chips and salsa were there right away, and beverages were there soon after. Shortly after this we gave our orders, and we waited... And waited. Followed by another short wait. Then our food came. I tried the enchiladas supremas. Nothing really special about them. The taste was just pretty bland. They had no life to them, I'm afraid to say. Luckily there was a bottle of hot sauce handy so I was able to resuscitate them slightly. If only long enough to get a dying confession out of them. They said Las Palmas es muerte. I paid, I left, I made a silent declaration to myself upon exiting that I think I need not return. Bummer, I wanted the other reviews to be wrong.

I've been to just about every Mexican restaurant in St. Louis and there are a few things I look for: good margaritas, good steak, and chihuahua cheese. Las Palmas had two of the three. The food was great and the margaritas weren't too sweet. My buddies and I enjoyed the hole in the wall atmosphere. The service was average for a Mexican restaurant and the food came out fast. For the most part, we enjoyed our experience and left quite content. We will most likely go back again next time we are in the area.

This place is ok. I work around the corner and get tempted every few months since it's convenient. I always leave not satisfied. It's generally dirty, the house salsa is poor (although the spicy green salsa is good), enchiladas not good nor are the chile rellenos. Cilantro rice is pretty good. Beans are not. Just better to find a different place for your mexican fix..

Standard Mexican fare, meaning it's got all the usual suspects to choose from. The food and drinks are fine but not fantastic. I give it the 3 stars mainly for the atmosphere and waitstaff.

HORRIBLE SERVICE! I have been to Las Palmas several times on Saturday nights. Everytime I have had to find a waiter walking around and ask them if they are serving in my section. Last night, I went up to the bar I was told someone would be over shortly. The waiter came over, took our order, and promptly messed up the three drinks that were ordered. He then told me that there were not going to be servers in my section and that I should order from the bar (not a problem, many places do this as it gets later). However, the bartender consistently left the bar unattended - outside smoking at least twice each hour, on her phone, singing karaoke?! When you only have ONE person at the bar (and oh yea, she was drunk), she sould probably stay at the bar. When she would finally return to the bar (now full of people waiting for drinks, she acted like we were an inconvenience to her evening. One the guys at my table ordered a jack and coke - while making the drink she ran out of Jack. Rather than asking if he wanted something else, she proceeded to add a well whiskey and Jameson to the glass and topped it off with coke. She handed it to him as if nothing was wrong! I really wish a manager had been on the premises last night, I would have given him/her an earful. If I'm ever there again and the bar is unattended, I suppose I'll just serve myself.

After Best of Missouri Market at the Mo Bot Gard, we had to stop at Penzey's in Maplewood and it was lunch time so we walked a block or so to Las Palmas. It appears Las Palmas is a local chain with at least two other restaurants. We did not need a lot of lunch after sampling most of the Best of Missouri, but thought it a good time to try Las Palmas, which I had seen before while driving through. This was admittedly not a serious test and they deserve an another opportunity to serve us dinner. Ms T had one fish taco and I had one each taco al pastor and carnitas. The fish taco was disappointing. Very light on the fish. The fish piece was pretty dark brown, like a burned, breaded fish stick. If you ordered the dinner at nearly $11 and had three of these, you would not be happy. I don't understand the other rave reviews on the fish tacos. It was just fried fish, and over fried at that and not very much of it. My tacos were just OK. The carnitas were slightly dry, but not fatally so. The meat in the taco al pastor was a little strange tasting by itself, but I kind of warmed up to it as I ate it in the tortilla. I missed the inclusion of some pineapple to top it off. I used the salsa that they brought with chips which was pretty good although quite oniony. The menu includes some good sounding seafood dishes (al Diablo, Veracruzana, etc) that really are dinnertime things. They were way more money and food than we would do for lunch. Might be worth a try, but there are a lot of places to try and we are rarely in the neighborhood. The taco offering is limited to carne asada, carnitas and al pastor. No lengua, no chorizo.

This is a short one. The chips and salsa are a good start. Service, weak. Fish tacos were burnt fish sticks. Chimichangas, meh, wet and mushy, tasted re- heated. Sides, below average. Two mediocre lunches for $29.00, I don't think so. With so many excellent Mexican and Tex Mex options in St Louis, we don't have to settle for "eh".

Mediocre. Service was decent. Salsa a bit watery. Ordered queso dip to start and unfortunately it came out cold, when our server came back we told him about it-he took the bowl and came back quickly-best bet would be that it got microwaved (I don't know if that's a bad thing, but seems less than legit). As for the entrees, nothing special. I guess this place is set up for cheap mexican but there are cheaper and better places to go. Bottom line, there are better choices. Unimpressed.

Not a rating for the atmosphere - but the food is amazing! They make everything fresh - the beans are authentic and fresh - nothing from a can! They've never made a margarita I didn't like. They have a great selection of tequila! Try the carnitas, fish tacos or the chicken chimichanga - awesome! It's a great place to take the kids.

Las Palmas has been paying attention. The must have gotten the memo that they were going to go under. My last experience here SUCKED. I'm not going to lie, things are a bit hazy today. I just couldn't resist the happy hour specials. Deals on house margs, imports and domestics and a special on Blue Moon for the ladies. We went to celebrate my best friend's engagement and had a great experience. Our server was friendly, not annoying. Our waters were always full and he kept the beers and margs coming. Three chicas had probably 6 drinks, 3 apps and one entree for about $45. We had guacamole (super fresh and different than most), nachos (fresh jalepenos!) and the most amazing dip ever. It's called the Las Palmas dip and it was creamy, buttery monterrey jack with spinach, artichokes and corn. I wanted to rub it all over my body. DELISH. The bride-to-be had chimchangas...she spoke highly of them and the large portion. After dinner, we went to the bar so we could commence the general debauchery. At 8 pm it turned into hipster haven. Hide your American Spirits, PBR pitchers are $5 ALL DAY LONG. Then the kareoke started.... "When I think about you, I touch myself, la la la" Well, you can imagine where it went from there. I apologize for not giving you a second chance sooner, Las Palmas, well done. Well done indeed.

FISH TACOS! They really are the best I have ever had. Also, their taco salad is good and really fresh. I have been here several times for lunch and dinners and have always had a good experience. The margarita pitchers are reasonably priced and very good. Service has always been great when I was in the restaurant. If you shop at some Schnucks grocery stores, you can find $3 lunch and $4 dinner coupons for Las Palmas. My boyfriend and I are always checking the back of our reciepts to see if we got one!

Love the food!!! Happy Hour was a great time, could do a little better on drinks prices. The waitress was nice.

Hmm. I'm conflicted. On one hand, I'm a sucker for a torta. I love the crusty bread that they are served on (at least, at the two places I've had tortas) and the contrast it provides with the otherwise Mexican sandwich fillings. On the other hand, the torta fillings I've had here were mixed. The carne asada was fairly good, with a good grilled taste, and wasn't too tough or chewy. On the other hand, the meat in the torta al pastor tasted sort of like a hot dog. Or maybe dog meat. It wasn't very good, but fortunately the bread helped tame the ickiness of the meat. My wife made the mistake of getting a taco al pastor, which highlighted the flavor of the meat a little more, and was really disgusted. She also didn't like the carne asada taco she ordered for the same reason I did like it: Strong "grilled" taste. Beans are standard, rice is not. Unlike the orange stuff they serve at most Mexican restaurants, theirs is green. Cilantro I guess? It was okay; I wouldn't say it was any better or worse than the orange variety. Oh, and I liked the salsa. It had more flavor than the salsa at the places my wife usually drags me to (El Agave or El Maguey). But the taco al pastor really ruined it for me.

Las Palmas was an oasis when wanting to watch a Cardinals game during the NLCS when The Post was too crowded. They had $2 beers and 1/2 off appetizers, but aside from this they're a pretty tasty Mexican restaurant. The tortilla chips are always warm and the salsa has a nice medium spice that doesn't immediately hit you but there's a sweetness to it, as well. And they're always bringing more chips to the table, a nice touch when enjoying a few beers. I always order the chimichanga here with half chicken and half pork, because it's just so good I can't stay away. Their guacamole never disappoints and like others, I have to agree that the cilantro rice is the best. And, as any Mexican resturant should, they have a large variety of tequila and make a lovely margarita. If you're in Maplewood, Las Palmas is worth a try.

Meh... Chips and salsa were not good. Menu had nothing that looked all that appealing, so ordered random ala carte items. Ordered cheese sauce/queso and never got it. We both looked up at each other about half way into our meal and just frowned about the food. Couldn't find waiter for 10 minutes or so after we finished meal to pay and get out of there. Plenty of other mexican places you could go to get way better food/service and menu options. Wont be coming back here...

I've been here to drink before and had a good time, but dinner was really disappointing. There was no one there at 6:30 so I should have known. My silverware was dirty, the food took forever and my fajitas were basically just chicken on top of a bunch of onions. I was hoping to take it home and have it for lunch the next day, but I didn't even want to do that. Definitely not worth the price.

Ok, my wife and I are biased, we lived in Houston for 3 years and San Antonio for 7. We know what Tex-Mex and Mexican are supposed to taste like, and on our third visit to Las Palamas in Maplewood we believe that the their chef doesn't. Service has always been spotty, and the restaurant is dark, hiding the grunge. Well there was enough light to see that nothing was clean, the floors , the walls or the tables. The chips and salsa were quck, and right out of a bag served at room temperature. I could have gone across the street to Shop n' Save to get better salsa, they served watered down tomato sauce with little or no spice. We ate ala carte. I started with a fish taco, not so good. Two deep fried Mrs. Pauls fish sticks, in a store bought tortilla and some lettuce, alot of salt no seasoning. The chimichanga, a food never seen in Mexico turned out to be a small portion of bolied chicken in a tortilla, not very thoroughly cooked. Disgusting and pasty. Sorry Las Palmas, you blew it. Ice tea glass sat unrefilled, not enough ice to get it cold. Which is good because it will be a cold day in hell before I dine there again. If I want really bad, non seasoned Tex-Mex I can go to Taco Bell.

Tasty enchiladas, good prices (and coupons in the RFT and on the back of Shnucks receipts), and cheap drinks during happy hour. What more could you want?

I was a little nervous to visit because of the mixed Yelps, but went after a weigh-in one night (yes, kind of weird, but my system seems to work okay) at the request of my boyfriend's mom. I have to say, it was really nice. I was concerned because there seemed to be one helper and one server for the whole restaurant. It wasn't super crowded, but the server was also the bartender and things can get a little hectic when that happens. The helper (more than a busboy, but not a server) didn't speak much English, but the phrases he knew were extremely polite and he kept the table clean and kept our drinks filled. The server did an excellent job keeping up with the 8 or so tables and the bar area. We had the Las Palmas dip because I saw Stacey T's review as well as the guacamole. The Las Palmas dip was delicious and the guacamole was well-prepared as well! The salsa was good, but was a little on the sweet side for my tastes. For dinner, I had 2 tacos a la cart and the rest of my party had chicken nachos and a supreme Chimichanga. I didn't have anything to drink, so I can't speak for their margaritas, but the food was delicious AND affordable, a one-two punch. I will visit again if I'm in the area, for sure, but I think my favorite will stay San Jose in Crestwood, though I'm looking forward to trying Rosalita's downtown!! Update: I forgot to mention that the helper seated us and pulled out all our chairs (including my boyfriend's). At times, I do not like this, but it was so sincere and it pleased me.

Here's the trick: order the chicken tacos with a side of corncakes. Put the corncakes into the tacos. Drop in a little chile habanero. Love life!

Standard STL Mexican fare. Their chips and salsa are really good, but nothing about this place was any different than the myriad of Mexican restaurants out there. I preferred it when it was El Scorcho.

I always thought this was a store front bar, so I never bothered to try it before. They have bar area and also a nice little area in the front of the restaurant with a few tables. We sat there, and the service was excellent. Not what I was expecting based on previous reviews. The salsa is odd, not bad but not the typical red either. I had the chile rellenos and the chicken verde enchilada. They were both excellent! I loved the cilantro rice and beans. What I enjoyed the most was that the food had complex flavors. You could taste the hint of onion in the rice along with the cilantro. The chicken was seasoned not just plain and covered in some gloppy sauce. Someone actually took care in the preparation. The food here is not hot/ spicy, but it is very tasty and not greasy either. It looked so good I forgot to take a picture. I'll be back.

Fish Tacos. That's all you need to know. Often imitated, never duplicated. Las Palmas has the best fish tacos I have ever had (I haven't had many - but nonetheless, they set the bar REALLY high). Las Palmas also has the best bartender in town: Chuck! I love Chuck! He mixes some of the best margaritas in town AND he does one of the best Bob Seger renditions during Karaoke on Wednesday nights. I have been coming to Las Palmas since it opened its doors, and it seems like more and more people come there every time I go back. The food is very reasonable, and it is very good too. The salsa is my favorite of any Mexican restaurant in the area. Spicy, and almost creamy. A very unique flavor. Some of my favorite dishes include the fish tacos, 3 big tacos with fried pieces of fish with a spicy chipotle mayo type sauce on them; the pulled pork burrito - totally unique and AWESOME; and the roasted corn and tomato soup - one of the most underrated dishes in all of St. Louis. I love Las Palmas on Wed nights because MK is on the mic and brings a great karaoke party. It's a lot of fun and a nice laid back atmosphere. I'm very glad Las Palmas is here in Maplewood and I hope it stays for a long time!

Margaritas as big as my head? Yes, please. Las Palmas offers a selection of delicious margaritas in 16oz AND 32oz servings. Or in pitchers, if you're adventurous (and not driving). I'm also a fan of the array of tequilas. Public service announcement: Cuervo and Patron are NOT the only options in the tequila world. Las Palmas has no less than 20 different varieties, and the bartenders can help you out with your selection if you're not sure which one to try. I recommend Tenoch -- it's the one in the white and green clay jar -- very sweet, with a noticeable agave flavor (as opposed to Cuervo, which kinda tastes like rubbing alcohol). Oh yeah, and Las Palmas also has food. I'm sure it was tasty, but my attention was focused on the gigantic margarita, so I'll have to update this review another time.

Since I LOVE mexican food, Las Palmas was a welcome addition to the former El Scorcho space in Maplewood. My first couple experiences with the food left me feeling like it was about average. But, as I've had more visits, it has gotten better and better! The salsa is really good and different. Not very spicy, but kind of creamy. Sounds gross, I know, but it's good! Chicken enchiladas, chimichangas, and fish tacos are excellent. The corn and tomato soup is also delicious! There are two downfalls...they allow smoking in the bar, so it's hard to leave without having that nasty smoke smell in your hair, and the margaritas are just so-so. Typical margaritas made with mix. I'd prefer the fresher lime version. The bartenders and staff now recognize us as "regulars" and we often frequent wednesday night karaoke. Great time!

I go to Las Palmas in Maplewood frequently and have never had a bad dining or drinking experience there. The decor in the bar is sort of like Mexico meets Applebee's - think pinatas AND old license plates and PBR clocks. But the first thing you see when you walk in is the amazing array of tequilas behind the bar - probably at least two dozen. The regular bartenders can be pretty helpful, but the owner knows each and every one. The margaritas are amazing. For appetizers, The Las Palmas dip is excellent, and Queso Fundido has a nice kick to it. Beware, that one can be a meal in itself. The dinner menu is vast and offers everything from the obvious tacos and burritos to some fine seafood selections - the snapper with diablo sauce will scorch your mouth and warm your soul. My old standby at Las Palmas is the chimichanga - it's big enough for dinner that night and breakfast the next day. The cilantro rice that accompanies nearly every dish is a fresh change from regular Spanish rice. Now I'm getting hungry...

I love Mexican food and this is my favorite place to go in St. Louis. The staff is always friendly and I never have to wait to get in. The margaritas are a little pricey but it is well worth it. Split a pitcher with a date and it's usually a great start to the night. If I go there with a buddy I always get the El Paradilla. I don't know if the spelling is correct but it is a plate of fajitas for two. It has steak, chicken, shrimp, pork and chorizo over a bed of onions & peppers. you will not regret it!

Las Palmas is a welcomed replacement to the former El Scorcho on Manchester in Maplewood. I happened in recently on a Wednesday night after cocktails at the nearby Red Lion Gastropub. It's a colorful restaurant with lots of interesting ornamentation. They had karaoke and I was surprised at how packed it was. The crowd was fun, and good looking (with the exception of a few characters that I couldn't begin to describe). The chips and cheese dip were delicious and the staff was friendly and fun. The owner sang several songs on karaoke, including the old reliable La Bamba to get the crowd going. I went back again during weekday lunch and ordered the chicken taco combo from the lunch menu. Great bargain at $6. My friend had enchiladas, which were tasty and also $6. Both were served with cilantro rice, and beans. Overall, Las Palmas is no better or worse than most of the Mexican restaurants in town, The price is reasonable and the food is okay. The only complaints I have is that the bar is small and smoky, the main eating area is a little dark for sytime dining, and parking is somewhat limited. I do recommend it as a good Wednesday karaoke spot.

Was there for a Saturday afternoon lunch. Only 2 other people in the restaurant, yet it took about 15 minutes for a waiter to show up. Then instead of giving us water, informed us that the kitchen was "malfunction city" so after that was fixed he'd get us drinks. Huh? Wha? I wanted to leave, but the rest of our table wanted to stay. It was then that we discovered in the menu that your first basket of chips is free, yet future baskets are $1.50?! Nice. Value the chips. The lunch menu was void for weekends, so most dishes were $10+. So now about 20 minutes later, we get our drinks and put in our order. It comes out fast, and it's fine. Nothing amazing. My dish was not worth $11. More like, $7. I also found a nice curly hair in my taco. Awesome. And a customer sitting near us had her order screwed up, but she stuck with it. Don't think I'll be going back there anytime soon. 2 stars since the food was edible.

Pretty good food at a VERY reasonable price! Went here for lunch today with some friends. Their lunch menu (11am-3pm) is a huge bargain. I ordered #14, which came with a beef chimichanga, a chicken chimichanga, beans, rice, pico de gallo, and corncake! Whew! Tons of food, and I had plenty of leftovers. All for the low low price of $6.15. Yep! I couldn't believe it. And it was all GOOD. The warm chips and salsa they bring out to you is a nice touch. I couldn't believe that we were the only four people in the entire restaurant for lunch! Really couldn't believe it. Minus one star because they allow smoking inside. YUCK.

I went back to Las Palmas to try their food. We were sat at a table in the back, right next to the back door... and it was cold. Also, there was a corner stuffed with mops and brooms a few feet from our table in plain view... ew. In hindsight, I should have asked to be moved. I ordered the appetizer sampler, stuffed chicken and ended with the sopapillas. The appetizers were standard. The wings stood out as they were breaded and had good flavor. But it was kind of odd to like chicken wings the best on a sampler of Mexican appetizers. The chicken was cooked to perfection and was stuffed with spinach and cheese. It was good. However, the sides (rice, beans, guacamole) reminded me of something that would be served at taco bell. Also, the entrees came with corn tortillas and when flour tortillas were requested, they would only do it for an upcharge. The sopapilla was good but not as authentic as I've had in the past. Las Palmas is a fun place. However, I rate my tequila tasting experiences here higher than my dinner experiences.

My two star rating is strictly based on the verbiage that yelp uses. I have experience better. They are probably closer to a 3 though in that the food was pretty good or average. The real problem is that I can't eat their salsa. I don't like onions, but can usually eat salsa by just dipping it and not eating the onions directly. But this salsa tasted more like onions than any I've ever had before. Onion fans may love it, but if you do not like onions, or are luke warm about them you will not like this salsa. ordered the chimichanga and beef burrito lunch special for $6.95. For the price you get a good amount of food. The burrito was very good. They also give generous portions of their beans, rice and corn meal. The rice is a little strange in that it is green. It's a cilantro-lime rice, but I've had that before and the rice was always still white. I could not eat the chicken chimichanga after one bite. The chicken meat filling was literally 40% chicken and 60% onion. Even if I liked onions this had an inordinate amount of onions. All in all the food was more not to my liking or preference, but not bad food. I won't go back, but others with different tastes may like it. Service was excellent.

Las Palmas serves up some of the most satisfying Mexican food in Saint Louis (something I have really missed since moving from Arizona). Try their tacos a la carte, especially the al pastor and carnitas for some authentic flavors. If in a group, get the pitcher of margaritas--you won't be disappointed. All in all, this is a fun place with funky decor and friendly service to hang out.

Garlic chicken was literally one of the best things I've ever had at a Mexican restaurant. However, minus 1 star for average salsa.

The Tacos al Pastor are great (lately they've been less crispy, I'm not sure if they have a new cook or what so hopefully they get back to normal). The salsa is very good and the traditional tacos are great. We've tried other dishes and been as pleased as any other Mexican restaurant. The chicken avocado salad is really good too. Can Mexican beer is a good deal at $2.50. Roasted corn and tomato soup is outstanding. Tortilla soup is good and tastes healthy. I can't even count how many times I've eaten here and I only discovered it a year ago! As for the other reviews, I'm looking for the food that comes from anywhere but the 'nice touristy part of Mexico'!

I feel a little bad given a bad rating having only been there once because the place did really have potential but it was not good. We went on a Sunday afternoon and all the food tasted left-over. I will revise if we make it back, but there are more reliable places in Maplewood in my opinion.

I really miss El Scorcho. We went to Las Palmas for lunch today. The server did immediately bring out chips and salsa. He was also pretty good about keeping our water glasses filled. However, It was unfortunate that their salsa tasted ketchup based...the texture also led me to believe that. I am pretty adventurous when it comes to salsa, but theirs was not good. After we ordered, we did wait a while for our food - my husband ordered a torta sandwich and i ordered chicken enchiladas. When our food did come, mine was lukewarm at best. The server came to check on us and I asked him to reheat my food, which he did do. When i got my dish back, it was sufficiently warm (they nuked it in the microwave), but I was very disappointed in the lack of flavor. I heard a woman from the next table over say that her salad was full of water and how gross she thought the salad was. My husband and I were very underwhelmed with the experience and do not plan on returning.

Best Mexican food in St. Louis, not joking. Their salsa is amazing, be sure to ask for their green salsa - very good as well. Love the Maplewood location, but frequent the Airport location as well.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
