This place is the bomb. Very very good in terms of quality ABD taste. No wonder there is always line And for sure I'll be back.
My Hubby and I were brought to Charley's Buffet by local friends. If you ever get the chance, GO, be sure you are ready to throw down, and wear stretchy comfy clothes because you will most likely overindulge at this comfort food buffet. The food is simple, composed of the freshest ingredients, and infused with love = utterly delicious. When I went, there was a line about 10 ppl BEFORE it opened for dinner. And I can see why. Once you get a seat, you'll want to hog it for as long as possible. The pulled pork was succulent. The ham was amazing. Even the vegies were delicious, probably because the butter that seasoned it is homemade. And you must -somehow- save room for dessert. Lots of room. The day I went, I counted over 20 desserts. Seriously. The pies and cobblers were just to die for. I literally had to sample one each of them and a sliver of each took up a whole plate! It's the kind of place that pictures cannot do it justice because you can't smell the amazing aroma.
Oh, wow..... I visited my brother that lives in a rural part of Missouri, for Thanksgiving. He had previously raved on about this buffet near him, and said that we should just do that for Thanksgiving...instead of spending a bunch of time and effort cooking. Admittedly, when I hear the word "buffet", I usually start cringing and develop an eye-twitch. Most of them are simply item-after-item of frozen food or things dumped "right outta the can". Many times, the food has been sitting there forever, and you just know that various strangers before you have been picking through it. It actually terrifies me to think of one. I decided to keep an open mind and go with my brother's plan, because I know that he knows good food. He couldn't have made a better choice!!! EVERYTHING is homemade, delicious, and fresh. I don't even know where to start. A few tips: if you miss the bread table, or dessert table, you are cheating yourself. Even the butter is homemade! (Extra points!) From what I hear, Charley's cooks spend the week preparing everything and the buffet is only open Friday and Saturday nights. We were there on Thanksgiving, which I think was an exception to their normal operating hours. It's a bit hard to find, and my brother drove forever on a highway that seemed like a roller-coaster. Totally worth it, I promise. Extremely reasonably priced, IMO for the massive effort that must go into the preparation of this delicious food...the price is something like around $10 per person, drink choice included. Here are driving directions that I located from a site listing Charley's: "Directions: From Cole Camp, take Highway B south about 10 miles to the intersection of Highways B and W. Charley's is on the right."

We have been here twice, once just recently and once four years ago. It was wonderful both times. My sister and I describe this place as a church-social gone mad. Tons and tons of delectable home cooking with nary an ounce of butter or sugar or salt or pepper spared. Everything is delicious and the folks that run the place are very friendly and accommodating. The fried chicken and rolls (with honey butter) are my favorites, but everything is very good. Don't eat lunch ... actually it might be better if you fasted for a few days beforehand. You won't be sorry! Very much worth the drive.
I have been to Charley's Buffet several times. We drive from Kansas City (about 2.5 hours) to eat at this magnificent butler-style building in the middle of nowhere at least 4-5 times a year. It's THAT incredible! And I agree with the previous reviews...be hungry when you go! It's not so much about gluttony as much as having the capacity to sample everything. It is only open Friday and Saturday nights, from 4:30pm to 8:30pm. As such, there is a constant line out the door and around the corner of teh building...even in winter! Plan on standing (or someone standing for you while you wait in the car) for at least 20-45 minutes. Charlie has these Mennonite women cooking 3-4 days in advance and you can definitely tell there is much love and craftsmanship (if you can use that term for home-style cooking) in every morsel! They also have several racks of baked breads and desserts to sell as you pay on your way out the door, but you'll miss out if you get there towards the later hours. And you WILL be missing some incredible baked goods! There is no way my wife will let me drive her all the way from Kansas City without coming back with something. Please, please make the trip and take the time to wait in line for Charley's. You definitely WILL NOT be disappointed! B.Shepard UPDATE: 09/12/2011 - You now pay before your meal, not after, as stated above.
This place is probably worth five stars but I am giving four due to the location, their hours, and the desserts. I love just about everything on the buffet. Their baked steak is my favorite with their mashed potatoes. Their fried chicken is very tasty and its usually moist and tender. Their beans are amazing. The only issue I have with their desserts is that their pies have a starchy mouth feel to them. Its almost like they did not cook the custards enough to get rid of that slightly gritty mouth feel. I usually stick with the cheese cake desserts or cookies. However, you may not even get dessert because you will be pretty stuffed with just the dinner options. Keep in mind this place is out in the boonies. However its a nice drive. The restaurant is only open two days a week and only until 8:00 pm. Do not be surprised if you show up and a line is out the door. We will definitely be back. Actually we have told all our family that if you come to visit make sure you arrive on a Friday or Saturday so we can take you here.
