This is my absolute favorite donut shop, and even though I moved from Independence I make sure to eat here whenever I am in town. I think it is a family restaurant because there are certain weeks that the whole shop is closed for vacations and etc.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of donuts here. The wait staff was extremely friendly and courteous. The donuts are inexpensive and they taste oh so good. They have one of the best old fashioned donuts I've ever had. Don't go to a chain when you can stop by here. The only drawback is that they don't except plastic (cash only).

Ok, so here's the deal. Way back when I wrote this review, they contacted me right away. That gets 10 stars in my book. Small business, monitoring Yelp - HUGE kudos! Since that time, we've been back. All I can say is their donuts won't disappoint, ever!

Way back in 1975, I swore to find the best donut shop in Missouri. Of course I had no idea what I was saying at the time, since I wasn't technically born yet. Regardless, I made a promise to travel the countryside, from donut to donut, dedicating myself to discover the best bakery before I died. Ironically, the more donuts I eat during this quest, the less time my heart has to function before it mutates into a lifeless, grey wad of concentrated cholesterol. I traveled from Lee's Summit to Independence this morning, to try out the mysterious Poppy's Famous Donuts. As a general rule, I believe truly "famous" things don't need to include the word "famous" in their title, because if they really are famous, it becomes redundant. Calling myself the "Famous" Rich "Lowtax" Kyanka doesn't make me famous, it makes me an asshole. Poppy's deserves the "famous." Simply put, they're the best donut shop I've ever visited. They offer a HUGE selection, from your standard glazed donuts and long johns, to weird circular-shaped objects I was too afraid to order, such as apple fritters covered with what appeared to be wood caulking. None of their donuts were greasy, they were all freshly prepared, and the prices were cheaper than average. Everything was amazing there, even the white fluff-filled long johns, which I typically avoid since the sugar concentration in those things is caustic enough to burn holes through your lower jaw. This place is great. I hereby crown them the reigning "King of Donuts." No wonder they're famous.
