This is a real gem of a place. The staff is super friendly and service is fast. The food is fresh and seasonal. Most recently I enjoyed the shrimp and grits. I subbed my salad for the roasted veggies which are WAY more fun than a salad any day. Topped it all off with a generous slice of coconut cream pie (that was filled to bursting with coconut, I might add). This is comfort food at it's best. Do keep in mind that reservations, while not required, are a good idea. Also, they will run out of things towards the end of the evening, sometimes it happens right at your own table! It happened to me when one of my 7 dining companions ordered the last of the turnip gratin right out from under me. It all worked out because she shared. It's a good thing too or I might be typing this from a Gasconade County jail cell. ;)

Great little place just outside of Hermann, MO! Everything is cooked fresh, and the menu changes based on the in-season produce. We had the creamed cauliflower and red pepper soup, Mimis chicken salad, pan fried chicken with real mashed potatoes, and orange cheesecake and triple brownie ala mode. We liked the Cottage better than the Vintage restaurant at Stone Hill.

I'm surprised no one has posted a review yet. Then, maybe I shouldn't because the secret would be out about this little hidden gem. Every time I go, I fall in love with the ambience. It's in an old cottage house, on a hill (no brainer for Hermann) and nestled in a woodsy area. Inside, the decor is a cottagey white-washed palette (clean and crisp) accented by juicy rainbow colors. Each table has a different overlay atop the white tablecloth (orange, green, aqua, yellow, etc.). And the walls are decorated with colorful, original artwork. Their is an artist studio next door. Outdoor seating available. But you can't eat ambience as the saying goes. Not to fear, because the food is fantastic. Never had a bad meal there. Last dinner I had featured the rib eye with the garlic-cheese mashed potatoes and green beans with carmelized onions. The steak was so juicy and seasoned perfectly. Large size as well. Served with fluffy biscuits. And, they offer raspberry ice tea. It seemed like it took the server forever to tell us all the dessert options. So many yummy choices! I passed because I was so full but my friends say the caramel cake is to die for. The restaurant at the Stone Hill winery is also wonderful. But don't limit yourself when you visit Hermann. Give this fabulous place a try, too!

While this place has a charming look the food is Very Overrated. I expected something very unique. The food was very bland. Their iced tea was very weak. I should have taken water instead. They put on an air that what they are serving is like what Chef Gordon Ramsey would prepare. FAR from it. So disappointing.

My wife and I really enjoyed the Cottage. We didn't have a reservation, but we were seated right away. Although our server was friendly, she didn't seem to know much about the menu. Still, we made our choice: fried chicken for each of us. Problem: only one plate left. So I ordered the small prime rib. I must say it was very good, and the horseradish sauce tasted quite fresh, not store-bought in a squeeze bottle. Both our dishes came with mashed potatoes (although my wife's also came with sawmill gravy). The food tasted very good, but it was a bit underseasoned. The deserts were excellent. I had bread pudding made with donuts (which actually wasn't overboard-sweet), and my wife had peach cobbler, which she said tasted just like her grandma used to make. The service was very friendly, and the atmosphere, although a bit dark for my liking, was inviting. We'd definitely recommend it, and would definitely come back.

Went to The Cottage for dinner last night. Easy to find just outside of Hermann, MO. Use other yelper's directions not google maps. Lovely and relaxed experience. I got the stuffed pork loin, garlic smashed potatoes and sauted spinach. Partner got the fried chicken. I have to say that it was by far the best meal I have had in a while and certainly the best in Hermann! Insider info: new location after the first of the year will be in the old Jillsies location in downtown Hermann.

The Cottage is a hidden gem just outside of Hermann. (Be careful getting there, Google maps may want to take you 10 miles outside of town. Let it be known that it is just about a half mile outside of town.) While my wife and I both enjoyed our dinner (fried chicken for me, shrimp and grits for my lady) the real show was the dessert. We split the salted caramel icebox pie. Now, when I say split, I mean we should have ordered two pieces because I only got a couple of bites. There you have it, you've been warned. Get two pieces of the salted caramel icebox pie.

Cute hide-away cozy restaurant. Love the quietness and the interiors. This place brings a relaxing atmosphere. Great service and a delicious light lunch. Love their bread pudding made of donuts.

Inside a whimsical and quaint little house set up on a hill in the woods is a darling little restaurant that cooks up some delicious meals and ambrosial desserts. The Cottage oozes charm in ambiance, decor and service with a discriminating attention to detail. We were seated at an attractive table in a corner set with a mint green table cloth with a small candle burning in the middle in what was probably the living room of this former dwelling. You will also find artwork from a few different artists hanging on the walls showcasing their talent. Foods all made from scratch and most locally grown & sourced, the menu boasts a variety of salads, soups, comfort food dishes, pastas, some German entrees along with a great variety of Missouri wines. I had the Hunters Salad, shrimp on Jalapeño Cheddar Grits and the bread pudding for dessert. I would recommend all of these items as they were absolutely fabulous. My husband had the Salted Caramel Pie for dessert which I tasted. Home run! If you are in the Hermann area I highly recommend this place. LOVE LOVE LOVE The Cottage! This is a lovely gallery/restaurant, slightly outside of town. I've eaten here with my girlfriend on our last two New Years trips to Hermann. The menu is fairly small but there is enough to choose from. I especially like the decor, which allows the art to stand out more prominently. We always appreciate sitting next to the gas fireplace and relaxing. I usually have some sort of chicken and Sarah had fish. We were both pleased with the food and service, and you can't beat the prices!

Me and my girlfriend were in Hermann on a mini vacation. People in town had told me to check out the cottages. We got there and the patio was ok, there wasn't much of a view. Also the pork entrée I ordered was one of the driest things I have ever tasted, I couldn't eat but a couple bites. On the plus side the service was good along with my girlfriends fried chicken dish. Don't know that I would return to this establishment, but they were friendly enough.

Wonderful food and service. A great place to have lunch with friends. The owner even gave us a ride into town.

Very happy with our recent experience here. Have lived in the area since 2010 but just got around to giving this place a try. I'm glad we did and I will be back. They use fresh ingredients and it shows. Staff is friendly and efficient.

We only had one dinner here in Hermann and this place came to us on several recommendations. We've lived in several big cities so have eaten in many restaurants... and we loved this place! The food, pricing, portion size, ambiance, decor, service and location just hit the spot for us. We recommend the fried chicken! Delicious...we'll be back for the bread pudding that we were too full to try.

Some family members and I had a lengthy dinner here one night and it was just wonderful. The ambiance is lovely, the staff is extremely personable and knowledgeable, and the food is simply delicious. They use seasonal, fresh ingredients so the menu items are frequently changing. They are only open certain days at certain times, so I suggest planning ahead and even making a reservation. But it's worth it! Oh, be prepared for a very, very steep gravel driveway and be careful about following MapQuest if you're using your iPhone MapQuest app to get there...keep your eyes peeled for the big roadside sign that says "The Cottage."

We were well accommodated with a party of 7. Appetizers dinner and dessert were all delicious.

We had supper on the patio, which was very nice on a cool fall evening. Everything we ordered, plus the service was excellent. My wife had fried chicken. I had the pork special, which was pork loin with a praline run @ sauce. I had the stir fried veggies and excellent cheese grits as sides. The driveway is a challenge but worth every bit of it.

This is a nice little place for a simple home-cooked dinner. The owner and servers are all very nice and the woodsy location makes it a nice escape from the places in town. We had the pan fried chicken and a zucchini cake entree ($14 and $10). Both were very good, but I would say similary to what we would make at home. I didn't see anything mind-blowing come out of the kitchen. The bread pudding for dessert was obviously warmed over, as was a little ball of spaghetti that came with the zucchini. You know how spaghettie gets kind of rubbery and dry when you microwave it? That's the consistency that was attained. They had about 6 specials, which makes me wonder how many are leftovers from the last couole of days (a pulled pork sandiwch special for dinner??). I'd probably say 3 stars, but the cute decor, nice patio, cool woodsy location and friendly service bump it up a notch. Definitely recommended amongst the choices in Hermann.

If I were rating this place strictly on food, I would only give it two stars. However, the ambience, location, and friendly staff raise it up a notch. The outside area by the rock walls was very pretty and the entire setting was nice. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating. This is especially true since we were a large party. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to the rest of the place. I ordered stuffed pork loin. The food was delivered fast. Probably too fast. I don't know how they could have prepared fresh food for so many in such short time. To me that indicates a lot of microwave use, but I could be wrong. My dinner came with a few thin slices of pork loin, green beans, garlic mashed potatoes with gravy and a biscuit. No salad. The portion size was ample. It was enough to fill me up, but no so much that I had to take home leftovers. I found the pork to be very dry and tasteless. The mashed potatoes were unremarkable and had very little garlic flavor. The biscuit was nothing to brag about. The one bright spot was the green beans. Some people thought they were overcooked, but I enjoyed them. My wife order Tilapia. They were very accommodating and let her substitute garlic mashed potatoes for the rice. She agrees with my comments on the beans and potatoes. She describes the tilapia as limp, slightly watery (although supposedly baked), barely warm, had a nice spice to it, but the fish had a rather fishy taste. Tilapia is supposed to be mild. It gave her the impression of being prepared earlier and had been sitting on a steam table for awhile. Definitely not cooked in the short period between our order and the time it was served. The other reviewers really liked the food. Maybe we went on the cooks night off, or maybe because we had a large group, they prepared a lot of food in advance. I may give it a try sometime when I'm in the area without being with a large group and then maybe I will have the experience of the other reviewers.
