I have to admit something - the main reason I was attracted to this place was because I heard about their desserts. I know that sounds pretty strange. But ever since I've given up bread, pizza and calzone type things haven't really been missed. If I ever have carbs nowadays, they come in the form of brownies, cookies, pancakes or french toast. But since I was having a cheat day, I figured I might as well have a few bites of the savory calzone my hubby ordered. The Gonzo - salami, dates, spinach, Boursin, mozzarella, marscapone, ricotta and garlic oil inside, served with a side of garlic butter. I thought this sounded pretty friggin' awesome and unlike any calzone I've ever heard of. I don't know where else you'd find a calzone filled with dates! Despite the fact that all of the dates seemed to be stuck in the corners while the meat was piled high in the middle, this was a pretty delicious calzone! I have to say that the dessert calzone was not quite as impressive. It was smaller and it was packed full of as much filling as I wanted, especially when it comes to Nutella! Also, while the dough on the outside was crispy, the dough on the inside was quite under-cooked. I know some people enjoy that kind of text, but can't say I feel the same. We will definitely be back to try another savory calzone because every single one on the menu looks fantastic!

We went in on a Saturday at about 4:30 and expected it to be busy, as it was getting close to the dinner rush, but surprisingly it hadn't picked up yet. For me, this is good because I hate crowds and would have probably went somewhere else. There wasn't anyone at the counter when we walked in, so we stood there for a while until the phone rang and someone came from the back to take an order from the phone. At this point, I liked the interior of the place and the atmosphere, so waiting a few minutes for staff didn't bother me too much. Also I noticed they have the pure cane sugar sodas that I like and have had before at places like Sugarfire. When the lady finished with the phone, we placed our order, got our drinks and had a seat. The tables and chairs are nice since I'm a big guy and worry (I know all you big guys and gals do too) I was worried, but It was comfortable and not a wobbly crappy chair. After about 10 minutes it seemed, our food came out. These plates they use are larger than normal plates, I must add, so when you look at pictures, keep that in mind. The calzone (I ordered the meat me in Saint Louie) was stuffed pretty full and my wife ordered the Zen Garden salad which was quite large. As far as calzones go, I read a lot of reviewers think they are huge, like some mammoth sized calzone. These people obviously don't eat calzones much. I wouldn't say they are huge for a calzone by any means, but rather that calzones in general are pretty large. With all of that said, I really, really enjoyed my calzone. It was very flavorful and fantastic all around. Not too much dough and lots of cheese. The ricotta was awesome as was the mozzarella. My wife loved her salad and that it had mandarin oranges on it. She also loved the salad dressing. I will be trying the fatty b and my wife will get the strawberry fields salad next time we go. These are the other options that we ended up passing on for what we got, but want to try out later. I ordered a Nutella-banana dessert to go and it was also very good. A bit messy, so don't try to eat it in the car or something, make sure you have utensils and napkins. Haha. I look forward to trying the apple pie next time or some time in the future. If you've read this whole thing, you are a champ! :)

It's GOOD. The cornucopia of flavors nestled inside this 14 table establishment is enough to warrant multiple visits just to try them all. Every bite of calzone eaten topped the previous one. The Figgy Piggy was a delightful combination of the perfect blend of figs, caramelized onions, and bacon with the perfect amount of cheeses to balance the flavors perfectly. The sauce on the side chosen was the spicy ranch. Perfection! The Fatty B was another winner calzone. The cheese and spicy sausage was topped with the perfectly cooked and crispy garlic butter topping. The Meat Me In St Louis was a the perfect Italian calzone with just the right amount of cheese. The Marscapone cheese was the PERFECT balance to the strong Italian meats. We topped the meal with the Apple Pie calzone which was touted as a family recipe favorite. We will be back!

Holy calzone. While staying in downtown STL, we were trying to find a place that was within walking distance from the Hilton. We stumbled upon Sauce on the Side and decided to give it a whirl. Not an ideal meal to nurse a hangover but what can you do? The calzones are absolutely gargantuous and range from $9-$11 and of course, comes with a recommended sauce on the side. Overall, a good, clean and quick stop if you're hankering for some interesting calzones.

When a food establishment makes you crave leftovers...it is TO DIE FOR! SOTS is hands down- amazing. The food is fresh, innovative, well prepared, and delicious. Portions are large. I only eat half of my calzone so I can relish in delight with leftovers a day or two after a visit. The salads at SOTS are very good. If I worked closer I could see just having a salad lunch now and then. Fresh, filling ingredients and well paired dressing. SOTS is worth a trip for salad alone. Now let's get to the calzones. They have a monthy special, SOTS Creations, and The Fold. The Fold is a Create Your Own Calzone. It comes with two cheeses and you go from there. The sauce is literally ON THE SIDE. Choose carefully from their list of sauces. They have about ten to choose from. The calzones are big enough to share---but I warn you---you will want your own. My fork would be up as a battle weapon to anyone trying to come near my Calzone. I think the Figgy Piggy is my ultimate favorite- but it is hard to say...

I love this place! I'm still thinking of the food I had last night. We started off sharing the strawberry fields salad. I'm not much of a salad eater so I need to be wow-Ed and I was. They split it in the back for us. We had the meat me in St. Louie calzone. I wasn't sure what to expect because of the meats listed but it was the right combo of pepperoni and Italian sausage. Delicious. We ended with the Nutella and banana dessert calzone. To. Die. For. Different but hearty- heartier than the crepe that often has these ingredients. I will most definitely be back. Often.

I'd only been to the downtown location until recently. And I loooooove this Clayton location just as much, if not more since it's closer to my :) The first time at this location, boyfriend and I called ahead with out order for carry out. We shared their smokehouse salad and five-o calzone. This was perfect if not way filling. The five-o is my favorite calzone, and this salad is INCREDIBLE. Most recently, I came with some family visiting from Chicago who had never been before. There were 5 of us adults and my almost 2 year old niece. We were greeted immediately, and the staff quickly put together some tables and brought over a baby chair to accommodate us. We shared the strawberry fields salad and carmen, magic carpet ride, and 'merica calzones. The 'Merica was a special they were running which had hamburger meat, pickles, bacon, onions, and maybe some other? It came with an AMAZING bbq sauce! The magic carpet ride had tons of tasty mushrooms and was great even though I am not usually a big mushroom person. The carmen was so so; I thought the prosciutto was way too salty. Overall wonderful meal and the staff was wonderful! I think the five-o is still my favorite, and I can't wait to go back!

I finally had the chance to visit this location of SOTS and like its sister location downtown, it's a nice space. Handmade tables, big windows, clean, easy to get in and out. Parking can be iffy as it is in Clayton, but on a Saturday at lunch time it was no problem. I ordered my standard: the fold with BBQ ranch. I also got a small strawberry fields salad. Both came out quickly and were delicious. They have got flavor down here. I love how they have Ski sodas on tap. I got lemonade and it was great. Not your typical minute maid. SOTS quickly has become a STL institution. Fast, flavorful, not expensive, filling, friendly... I'll keep coming back for sure.

So many 5 star reviews but I have to give it a four (definitely not bad though). I went with a friend for lunch and we arrived at 11:02am (they open at 11). They were ready for us and were very nice except a little too nice (let me explain). So 3 or 4 employees were standing behind the main counter and each one separately said hello to us. Idk if that's their policy but it was just awkward saying hello four times in a row (better than nothing but just felt weird-not deducting for that). Then one man asked if we had been there and before I could fully get out "no but we know what we want" he went through the entire menu which was really sweet of him but we knew what we wanted and was a bit inefficient for the people behind us. So it's a super clean place and the staff is very friendly-5 stars for that. What I didn't really like was how I felt the calzones were all pretty much the same thing. I try to avoid meat if possible so I got the garden and it was good but not excellent. It was cooked perfectly and all but I just felt like the veggies lacked flavor. They were cooked well and this was excellent but what calzone isn't? It was total comfort food but nothing I was blown away by. They have nice sauce selections. Maybe if they had weird, different fillings I'd be more excited but to me it's kind of like a sandwich shop in the sense that 'it is what it is' however, it was a very good calzone. My favorite thing was the Zen salad I had. It was huge and I ended up taking most of it home along with the calzone. It was good but nothing about this place is extremely unique to me. I'd probably take my parents here because they don't really like 'exotic/unique' foods like me and I'm sure they'd love it here. 4 stars simply because it's a personal preference I suppose.

I cannot believe that this week was my first visit to Sauce on the Side. first of all, a calzone restaurant is a great concept, and one that is executed with true attention to detail. the sauce IS on the side, which is weird at first but then quite enjoyable. The Magic Carpet Ride calzone is absolutely the best calzone I've ever eaten, quite possibly some of he best pizza I've ever eaten and almost certainly would be a fave of the calzone-king, Ben, played by Adam Scott in Parks and Rec. no, I am not being paid to say that, it's just that the mushrooms were meaty and fleshy and umami and moist, complementing the salty cheese and crust perfectly. I would have a hard time not getting that exact one again on a second visit but I know I should try something else !

  • Amanda R.

This place is absolutely awesome! I want to try all the calzones. I order every one with the queso sauce on the side because it is the best queso I've had! Delicious. Ones to definitely try: I have heard the Duke is amazing, also I had the Roasty Toasty with Pesto Chicken, Arugula, Red Onion, Toasted Pine Nuts, Mozzarella, Ricotta, Garlic Oil, Pesto Sauce. It is AMAZING!!!!! I later tried the 'Merica special which was awesome. I plan to get the nutella banana calzone for dessert. You can take the office here for a lunch break, have it delivered around St. Louis or just pick up delicious food. highly recommend.

Quality is indiscernible from the original location downtown. Love the concept and very glad to have a closer location. Food is just as amazing at this location.

Great beers, wonderful food, and excellent customer service. They've upwards of 30 craft beers, including CO, KC, CA, and MO breweries. You can even take them to go (unopened, of course). I'm addicted to their strawberry fields salad, I literally salivate for it and need to learn how to make that dressing. I don't like feta, and they've forgotten the candied walnuts when I've asked for no feta. One of the owners promptly responded to me and offered my next one on the house, understanding how clutch those walnuts are. Love this place and go almost weekly.

Pretty average. The meat me in St. Louie tastes like a normal hot pocket. The strawberry fields salad was drenched. Had to send it back to get one with "sauce on the side" -- good but again nothing to shout about. Will have to try a different calzone next time. Good beer selection and nice interior. Very nice staff as well. They have me no trouble with sending the salad back and brought a fresh one out quickly. In summary: the concept is cooler than the execution the first time around. Will definitely try it again and update!

This is absolutely my new favorite restaurant. We came for the first time today for lunch, and I literally can't wait to come back. We tried the meat me in St Louie which had pepperoni, sausage and provel in it, and the Figgy Piggy which had ricotta, bacon, caramelized onions and figs. My goal is to try all of their specialty calzones, because each combo seems fantastic. Almost forgot: they have changing tables in the bathrooms, so ACTUALLY good for kids.

  • Elizabeth R.

Calzones! They are big, cheesy, and tasty! What's not to like? My calzone was huge, but I ended up finishing it and feeling incredibly fat and happy afterwards. The food was universally a little too salty for me, so in the future, I might avoid calzones with cured meats (very salty on their own). Seating was kind of a problem (we went during a very busy time), but we got a table before our food came out, so it all worked in the end.

As good as downtown without the downtown parking fiasco. Love Sauce. I always get the Duke, because BBQ sauce/chicken/bacon/mozzarella is never a bad combo. Its not the cheapest, but you walk out needing a wheelbarrow (in a good way, of course!). I've brought bosses, friends, dates here...not at the same time...that'd be awkward. Nutshell: its ALLLL good. All of it. People are down to earth, food is flavorful and filling. Can't go wrong for lunch or dinner.

  • Jessica M.

I freaking love Sauce on the Side. Best calzones ever. I always order the "Meat me in St. Louie." It's full of different types of meat, garlic oil, and provel cheese and served with a side of meaty marinara sauce. The crust of the calzone is soft but not super doughy and rubbed down in butter/garlic. Mmmmm I've had bites of other calzones that friends have order...you can't go wrong with anything you choose from the menu. It's all delicious. Sauce on the side also delivers! How amazing is that?! AND they are open til 2am! They also have dessert calzones. Last weekend we ordered the Banana Nutella one and it was mouthwatering. We split it among 4 girls, which was perfect. I highly recommend Sauce on the Side if you're craving pizza, but want something new and interesting! It's great!

This is my 100th Yelp review and it might as well be a 5 star review as I enjoyed my dinner last night. I went to Sauce on the Side for my first time last night with my mom. This location has only been open a week. They did a nice remodel of the store. There are nice wood floors and the bar has a beautiful marble counter. Right by the entrance are paper menus rolled up nicely and ordering is done all at the counter (where there is another large menu on the wall behind the bar) and the food is brought to the table. Silverware is wrapped up in linen and stored in a container on the table. The restaurant seems to be staffed very well. Workers were diligently cleaning tables right after customers left as well as greeting people as they came and left. We shared all the food we ordered which was the duke calzone and the beet salad. Both were delicious. After we finished the main course, we split the banana and nutella calzone for dessert. Dessert was truly the highlight. I don't know if it's because I generally try to avoid desserts and haven't had sweets in a long time but this calzone was amazing. Highly recommend. Although we stayed with ice water for a beverage, there looks to be about 50 bottled beers available as wells as about 5 on tap. I have a feeling this place will do well with the Clayton lunch crowd. I am glad they opened a location in my hood.

This is the nicest tenant for this location that I have seen so far, there have been at least two other casual dining establishments in this spot in the last five years or so. I went recently for the first time for lunch and was impressed by the atmosphere, menu and quality of the food. This is walk up and order type of service but they are much more professional and attentive after the order and will make sure your table is cleared when you are done eating much like full table service. Had the Garden Calzone which was good, it was not overly-cheesy like traditional Calzones and like the name says the sauce is served on the side. They also have a good beer selection as well as serving alternative-brand sodas.

After reading all of the glowing reviews of this place, I decided to finally try it out for myself. I chose Sauce on the Side for my birthday dinner with my husband. We came about 6:00 on a Friday night, which seemed to be a good time. When we arrived, we had our choice of open tables, and by the time we left, people were stalking us for our spot. The concept is easy... pick your calzone or salad from the large menu on the wall, order at the counter, choose a seat, and wait for your food to be brought to the table. My husband started with a caesar salad, which I wanted no part of. I saw the dessert calzones listed on the menu too and I was saving all available space in my stomach for that... not lettuce. He claims their caesar is one of the best he's had though. I ordered The Roasty Toasty (pesto chicken, arugula, red onion, toasted pine nuts, mozzarella, ricotta, garlic, and a pesto sauce) and my husband ordered The Duke (BBQ chicken, applewood smoked bacon, corn salsa, smoked cheddar, mozzarella, smoked chili oil, and a BBQ ranch sauce). Both calzones were enormous and delicious. We somehow finished every last bite and still had room for dessert. Hey, don't give me that look! It was my birthday! The nutella banana with mascarpone cheese won out over the caramel apple pie. We couldn't finish this chocolate monster, but made an impressive dent. I could come here just for dessert... it was THAT good! There were several other unique combos that I'd like to try, so I will definitely be returning. And yes, I probably will order that nutella banana calzone again even if it's not my birthday. Nutella can make ANY day special.

Excellent calzones. Fresh ingredients, made to order. Excellent homemade sauces, which are definitely great additions to the tasty dish. Carbonated drinks are from a local source, not mainstream Pepsi or coke. Definitely recommend to anyone in the mood for a good calzone.

Very nice restaurant with awesome atmosphere and wonderful staff!!! The calzones were delicious and the sodas that they getting from a brewing company in Illinois were fabulous!! We got the meat me in at. Louie and the duke and loved them both! The staff was very attentive! Would definitely go back!

This place is another pizza heaven. The calzones and the salads are plentiful and flavorful. I have been here twice and tired different things both times and the first experience was better then the second, not because of the atmosphere or workers there simply because for my palate I didn't make the best choice on calzone. I would highly recommend this place, not only do they have a cool place to enjoy mouthfuls of delight, they have an awesome selection of beers and sodas. Next time I'm going to make my own calzone and I am excited to go back! Don't worry about the large portions, if you have to take it home, it heats up very nicely, almost as tasty as straight from their oven. Also, try a different sauce with the calzones then you would expect. The queso and honey mustard dipping sauce are fantastic, adds to the experience and party in your mouth! Great place to take the entire family. Mmmm mmmm good!

Love calzones, and this place steps them up a notch. Enjoyed the five-o, pineapple and panchetta, while in town for work. The staff was extremely helpful in helping pick out a calzone, and the interior was inviting. Only retreat was I got to go only once.

This place has the best Calzone I have ever had. I got the Meat Me in St. Louis and it was packed with meat and creamy cheese. It was huge so I only ate half. So would be good to share or have for later. The staff was friendly and helpful with the menu and the atmosphere was fun and inviting. This is a must eat place.

I've had good calzones and barely fair calzones. At Sauce on the Side, I had my first-ever great calzone! The place was fairly busy when I got there. It was lunchtime on Monday, so I was worried we'd have trouble getting a table after we ordered at the counter. I just wanted cheese in mine and selected a few different cheeses. As soon as we were finished ordering, a table opened up and I descended upon it. When the food came, we descended upon that. My calzone was delicious. Had I paced myself, it could have made two meals, but I raced myself and ate it all. For dessert, I had a Nutella and banana calzone and my friend ordered a s'more calzone. I only ate a few bites of mine before I was full. We could have split one, but instead we chose to order what we each wanted and take the rest home. If only parking were more convenient. I had to park several blocks away. I guess you can't have everything. But you can eat it. I never knew I could be excited about calzones! Woo!

This place is a MUST TRY. I came by this place for lunch per a coworkers recommendation, and took carry out. It only cost $10. All eyes were on me in the office, or rather, on the mysterious box of delicious smells I was holding as I walked to my cubicle. I took my sweet time with the Carmen: Prosciutto, Capicola, Spinach, Parmesan, Fontina, Ricotta, Garlic Oil, Garlic Butter Sauce. I'm rather evil, so after eating half I offered a bite to a coworker who I know is trying (a little too hard, in my honest opinion) to lose weight. I then proceeded to observe this being, cognitive dissonance incarnate, try to reconcile just one bite of this legendary smelling calzone with his rapidly declining self-discipline. Not to worry, he enjoyed every calorie of that complimentary bite. The take-home story is, $10 can buy you a lot of satisfaction. I personally like to check on my 401k as I'm eating SotS. It makes me feel better.

OUTSTANDING flavors for lunch or a casual dinner. The reviews have been great for this new gourmet calzone spot in Clayton and we totally agree. The food, flavors and menu are outstanding. Very reasonable prices, a diverse variety of Calzone's, bottled beers and wines. The servers were friendly and helpful and both calzone's that we ordered were very perfectly crafted, flavorful and fresh. It seems bizarre to have a Calzone restaurant, but I think people will crave them and return to try new flavors. Seinfeld's George Costansa would be proud! This is a superb addition to the Clayton restaurant scene. Casual, fast and a real exploration of new combinations you would never otherwise try. The vibe is very casual, but upbeat and friendly. It is now the BEST calzone I've ever had.

Nice warm atmosphere, friendly staff, tons of menu variations. Price $7 to $10 average for calzones. Big portions. Loved it! Had the Duke calzone. Very good! Definately recommend if in the area!

This restaurant was a couple of blocks from our hotel so off we went based on Yelp reviews. My husband and I shared a calzone (Magic Carpet Ride) and my cousin had a salad with chicken. Both were excellent. But the stand out was the banana and Nutella calzone. OMG it was delicious. Prices were good and the portions were healthy.

After probably a year of saying I wanted to try this place, I finally made it. I wasn't quite sure what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in. Somehow, they manage to be simple yet elegant with everything they have to offer. The atmosphere was very casual, you seat yourself and order at the register, then they bring you your food. Soft-drinks are self serve. The menu has something for everyone! I was very tempted to order a salad, but decided on my first visit I couldn't pass up a calzone! The problem was choosing one. Both I and my date were happy with our selections (The Puttanesca and the current special, the Mayflower). I was also impressed by the wine and beer selection. Can't wait to come back for a salad, but I think the calzone was a bit filling for me to repeat any time soon (come hungry!). Also, parking at dinner time is not super easy, all street and downtown Clayton doesn't offer a cornucopia of spots, so be ready to walk.

Cool casual ambience, great for dinner with friends. Definitely a restaurant worth visiting in St. Louis. Ordered the Duke! Shredded bbq chicken and amazing corn salsa. I usually don't eat calzones because you usually just get a bunch of bread. Loved how it was easy on the breading, and generous with the main stuffing! Great balance of chicken to salsa, and oozing mozzarella. Forget the fork and knife- this must be tackled with two hands.

This review is going to mimic my review of the downtown location. This is far and away my favorite place to eat in the St. Louis area. It always hits the spot no matter what mood I am in. They have many different varieties of calzones and salads that are sure to please. My favorite is the Pancho Villa It combines peppers, chorizo, & cheese, all wrapped up in their magically calzone dough, and cooked to perfection. Then to dunk it in, you have some amazing queso dip. It is pure culinary bliss. Another great aspect of this place is they have all sugar sodas by The Double Cola Company, which includes SKI my all-time favorite soda. If soda doesn't suit your fancy, then they have an excellent selection of beer and wine also. If you like wheat beers, and have 8 dollars to burn, try the Hitachino Nest White Ale, it will blow you away. Every time I see that beer now I have to have at least one bottle. If you aren't a calzone fan, try this place anyways. I don't eat calzones anywhere else but here, and as I stated before, they are my favorite thing to eat. I can't wait for them to come a little bit further west to around the Chesterfield area. Then I'll truly be a happy camper.

Sauce in the side is a great place to have a calzone, awesome service. The ability to customize your calzone and go off the menu is all the more reason you should visit. This location is nice for a week day dinner or a weekend spot for a quick bite before hitting downtown Clayton. Highly recommend!

The Saint Louie calzone was so delicious and creamy because they use ricotta! My goodness, it was a huge portion, too! I could only eat half and had nothing else for lunch at all! Can't wait to go back!

Ate at the new downtown location and had the figgy piggy. Split it with my dinner partner. It was great. Like a gourmet pizza. Really appreciate the glass glasses, cloth napkins and metal utensils. The ambiance and music were nice too. Will return.

So many glowing reviews for this place...I just don't get it. Recently had The Duke...found it to be really underwhelming. I suppose when I think of a calzone...I imagine gooey cheesy goodness and a substantial amount of grease. The fat girl version of calzones. Dee-lish. This just wasn't doing it for me. To be fair, I'm also not a fan of "artsy" pizza...like Pi. It would only stand to reason I wouldn't be a fan of "artsy" calzones from Sauce on the Side.

I recently had a work lunch at Sauce on the side. It was easy to order and the service was relatively quick considering the lunch rush. The menu has a variety of calzone options and what I ordered was pretty delicious! Good spot for lunch during the work week if you want fast and delicious!

I'm salivating just thinking about the calzones at this place! I've been going since their opening on 9th and Pine. I'm even more excited about the Clayton location because its closer to home. The "Roasty Toasty" is my absolute favorite. Savory ingredients! Chicken and pesto are my faves! "Which Came First" was pretty good as well. I enjoyed the salsa verde sauce choice.

Guess what? THEY DELIVER!!! For someone who stays at hotels a lot, I try to skip the room service and explore food around town. But STL, you are soooooooooooooooo colddddddddddddd! So I was super pumped that I found a local favorite that delivered! Just looked online at the menu, asked a couple of questions when I called in my order, and 20min later, voila! Here's what I got: Beets Me! salad (s) - I was actually a little disappointed by this beets. Maybe it's personal preference, but I like my beets to be cooked/roasted and these were raw. The mixed greens were fine and the dressing was very tasty. Solid Fatty B - While I've never really been a calzone girl, there were definitely some highlights--PROS: the pepperoni and meatball were tasty and abundant; there was an ton of onions; you could definitely taste the ricotta; the crust was very nice; it was a HUGE calzone....however, there were some CONS: there wasn't enough of the melty, cheesy factor here, maybe bc I ordered delivery and it got cold? or bc there wasn't enough cheese; the onions were a bit too raw. I also got both the meat sauce and the spicy red sauce on the side....i like it saucy! The meat sauce was veryyyy meaty, so really, feel free to skip this sauce with this calzone, meat on meat on ....meat. The spicy red sauce had good tang and touch of heat, they were absolutely correct when they paired it with the Fatty B. Overall, I was very satisfied with this takeout meal. I will definitely be back/order again to try different things and update my review! :)

The calzones were super soft and savory! I will definitely come back The Fatty B had a bit too many onions The Pancho Villa was spot on

Had beet salad and mushroom calzone. Incredible!! We also ordered an Italian salad and it was deliciously chopped. Salad dressings are wonderful, cheesy calzones and yummy sauces!! We had red and garlic butter. Yummy sodas too. Not sure what company they come through, but it's not cole or Pepsi :)

Had heard about this place several times. And the word of mouth was correct! Amazing food! My girlfriend and I each got our own calzone which was perfect. We then split the dessert calzone (banana Nutella). And of course, they come with sauce on the side!

My second time here. I've had the 'Meet Me in St. Louis' and the 'Poncho Villa'. Both were incredible. The Poncho Villa is a spicy kick in the pants. Try them both with the queso and you won't be disappointed. I left with an apple pie. It's in the refrigerator and frankly I can't wait to dig in. I might go back tomorrow...

Between going to school and working next to the downtown location and living next to the Clayton one, I think it is safe to say I have one of their salads at least once a week. The calzones are obviously really good but I come back frequently for the salads. The beets salad is awesome and they have the best cesar dressing I have ever had.

Casual, order at counter. Parking can be difficult in prime hours for downtown Clayton, but that is the case for every establishment in this area. Loyalty card is offered that gives 10$ free for every 100$ spent. Gets busy in prime hours, but some tables are usually open. Delivers to 10 minute driving radius from restaurant. Sauce on the Side knows exactly what they do best-calzones and salads-and they execute them perfectly. A variety of salads are offered, with the standout being the Strawberry Fields, which is one of the best salads I have had at a casual establishment in St. Louis. However, too much dressing is used occasionally, so I would suggest asking for it on the side. The calzones are incredible, and nothing like you have ever had at a pizza shop. They have a huge variety of different themes, and many calzones have gourmet elements not normally seen in the food item. Sauce on the Side breathes new life into the calzone-it is a depart from the trite formula of marinara, mozzarella, and crust. Hipster soda fountain is offered, with all drinks containing real sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup, which actually makes a huge difference in taste. However, if you are a die-hard Coke or Pepsi follower, this might be disappointing. Lemonade is the best fountain lemonade I have ever tasted.

Really yummy calzones! Pretty good deal for the amount of toppings included in the calzone. Good combo of flavors too. We got the Fatty B, & Puttanesca; both were really good and a nice (pretty big!) size. Locally made sodas on tap, which was neat. I took off 1 star because their big, clean, spacious restroom didn't have a hanging table on the large empty walls. Easy fix would've made this a more frequent lunch or fast dinner option for us.

Very good food at a great price too. They'll make whatever you want, the way you want. Everything is made fresh to order. Fun place with great food. Very friendly staff and so helpful too. Must go back to try other things. The apple desert calzone was a surprisingly delicious treat you must try.

What isn't to like? Calzones are all masterfully created and the tastes blend together harmoniously (Get the Five-O. seriously it's unbeatable). Such an awesome interior and atmosphere. The service is great and the employees are helpful and funny! All the sodas are awesome local brands (I suggest Black Cherry). The strawberry fields salad is DIVINE and don't even get me started on the Banana Nutella Dessert Calzone. Unbelievable. Such an amazing casual fast restaurant. It's my new go to, and def my new favorite!

Calzones were very yummy! My only complaint is mine could have been a bit warmer. The flavor was great though! I had the magic carpet ride and it didn't disappoint. We will definitely be back.

Mmmmmmm delicious. We had an italian salad and The Castanza calzone. It was delicious. They have a good beer selection and the staff was very friendly and attentive! We will be back!

The service and food was awesome. Almost all of the beverage options were from local companies, which was cool. Will definitely come back again.

At first I was a little discouraged at the idea of salads and calzones. However, once I actually read the simple menu, I was impressed. I chose a salad that was incredibly tasty. The flavors are spot on and blended well. I also tasted some of the calzone with the fig in it - amaze! Overall - super impressed. Loved the simple menu that was artfully crafted. Will be back fo sho!

I've eaten here two times and loved both meals! The calzone was large & i had another meal later that day because of it. The salad dressing I had on the Zen Salad was AWESOME-SAUCE! Literally. The people working were great too. The most surprising part of the restaurant is the array in variety of import beer they carry! Also awesome. Definitely one of my favorite go-to spots in Clayton I know I can rely on for good food in a timely manner.

To be honest, I was kind of disappointed with this place. I really wanted to like it, and it has gotten so many positive reviews, so I thought it was a sure thing, but it was just a little underwhelming. Not bad, just not amazing. I had the costanza, and the fillings were tasty, but the crust was disappointing. It was way too bread-y, as opposed to doughy, and when I think of a calzone, I think of dough like pizza dough- this was not that. The calzones are a good size, but they were a little skimpy with the meat fillings. Probably the most disappointing part was the dessert- we got the apple pie calzone, and it just had a really weird spice to it- something other than cinnamon that I couldn't put my finger on. It also didn't have that many chunks of apples inside- it was almost pureed apple. Meh. I like the vibe of this place and it's close and convenient to where i live, so I really want to like it, but I just wasn't thrilled with it the first time. Perhaps I'll give it one more shot, but it seems a little overhyped!

Me and couple of girls from the office wanted to order lunch on this 100+ degree day so we wouldn't have to walk somewhere. Plus, we knew it would be busy. Call to order delivery but delivery doesn't start until next week (despite the website saying it is available). Oooook, so we'll go pick it up. Get to the restaurant (which is very small) and the line is super long so I ask a waiter if there is a pick up spot hoping to avoid the wait. There is not. Bummer. There are two registers so the line moved faster than I anticipated but it would still be nice to be able to "cut" to get my card swiped, pick up my food, and GTHO. I spent less than a minute at the counter. I ordered the Carmen. It is delicious. I really like the dough they used as it is soft and pillowy. All in all, the above issue is minor and just requires a bit more planning to wait in a line I had hoped to avoid by calling in advance. Or, maybe they'll come up with an idea for pick-ups (wink, wink). I was super excited about this place to add some variety to my lunch options. Their prices are on point and they have SO MANY different filling combos. I am excited to try their other menu items, including the salads. I don't think I would get bored eating there often.

Yummmmmy! The Figgy Piggy and Duke are two of the top from what I hear, but I haven't heard a bad review of any of their creations yet. AND they deliver!

Me and my husband are here right now and we ordered the Nutella banana dessert. It was delicious. Customer service is great! They are laid back and make you feel welcome! The restaurant itself is cute but the music that plays ruins the romance on a date. Overall good price and good food! Definitely coming here again!

This is a super cute place! Great for date night, but not the first date! There is a solid beer list, with some wine options, if you care to partake. However, the calzone compilation options are endless! I started with the Fold, which is their basic calzone and added BBQ chicken, spinach, mushrooms and tomatoes with a side of their perfectly sweet and smoky BBQ sauce. I am a sauce person and they hit it! Overall, this is a great place and there was no need for a reservation, which is so desperately needed in the trendy Clayton area, especially on a Friday or Saturday night. Excellent choice! Give them a try!

I truly love Sauce on the Side, but I was incredibly annoyed by my last visit. I wanted to swap out cheeses, which all cost the same, and I was told that they would charge me an extra $1.50 for each cheese. I re-iterated that I wanted to substitute rather than add cheese, but they were completely inflexible. Fine. I deviated from my usual Meet Me In St. Louie order and got the Fatty B. Big mistake. The meatballs are flat slices that look like bologna, and mine were cold. It was really disgusting. I'm not even going to get into the cashier's attitude. Saving Grace: The caramel apple pie was OUT OF THIS WORLD. Seriously. Save room and order it--split it if you have to but ORDER it.

I am in town on business and needed something deliverable and delicious. Sauce On The Side NAILED IT! I made my own calzone: Pesto chicken, artichokes, black olives, and green peppers. I even got queso dipping sauce. Hands down the best calzone I have ever eaten. And it was huge. I would order it again and again!

On the fence between giving 3 stars or 4 but went with 4 due to excellent customer service. I had the Carmen and wife had strawberry salad. The Carmen was good but really salty which thankfully the garlic butter was on the side otherwise it would've been too much. The salad was actually pretty good which helped compliment the calzone. Overall the 6 of us who went all enjoyed our experience there and would go back again.

My first review on Yelp, WOOO! Anyway, this place was a great find. They have a wide variety of interesting sounding calzones and salads. We split the smokehouse salad. Steph had the feature (Cock-a-Doodle Noodle) I had the Fatty B. Let me start with the salad. It was a standard chopped salad with an awesome smoky BBQ ranch dressing. It also had big chunks of thick cut bacon which matched up with the other flavors perfectly. The Cock a Doodle Noodle was Mac n cheese inside a pizza crust with a buffalo butter sauce on the side, fantastic. The Fatty B was sausage, pepperoni, onions, and ricotta with a zesty marinara sauce on the side. The crust was thin and crisp at the center of the calzone and thick and doughy at the sides. Just delicious. The only reason that I'm rating this a 4 instead of 5 is that the poor guy taking my order didn't know anything about beer (they do have a decent selection) and could not find my first choice. When I made my next choice he gave me the wrong beer. I didn't feel like subjecting him to anymore torture (and the people behind us were absolutely miserable human beings and I didn't want to listen to them complaining about how long everything was taking.) Overall, this is a great place and we will be back for sure.

Excellent service and food with generous portions. Options are unlimited for your calzones. Something for everyone with fresh ingredients to boot.

Wife had a good salad with strawberries and chicken - it surprised us how much we liked the salad. Candied walnuts and good dressing too. I had the Fatty B calzone with pepperoni and meatballs. It was good -- fresh, nice flavor and good crust -- my only gripe is that it was not as cheesy/gooey as I would have expected. My daughter's plain calzone with just mozzarella was very gooey. Nice feel inside the restaurant, too. Definitely want to try this place again.

Every time I'm in Clayton I eat here. So good. Have the Meat Me in St. Louie with an extra side of pesto sauce. The provel cheese inside is such a treat and the crust is nice and crispy. Could eat all the time! Only reason I didn't give 5 stars - iced tea was watery. Not remotely strong enough.

Great food! They have lots of options for everyone, even my friends that were picky eaters found something that they liked! I really like the Magic Carpet Ride and Meet me in St.Louie...I heard that their salads are fantastic as well. The whole place is a fun atmosphere but be careful around lunch because it can get crowded really quick. They also do delivery which is nice for lunch meetings!

This was my first sauce on the side experience and it was quite delicious. I ordered the meat me in St. Louie and my boyfriend ordered fatty b. We both preferred the meat me in St. Louie by far so we were kind of disappointed with the fatty b choice. Other than that we had an amazing time. They had a huge craft beer selection which was awesome and their excel foundation soda was unique and awesome as well. I can always appreciate when a restaurant supports local businesses. We went during the lunch rush and despite how busy they were, the service was exceptional. I would go back just because of how amazing the service was. The guy who rang us out also checked on us multiple times and offered to fill our sodas when I'm sure that wasn't entirely in his job description. We will definitely be back to try the many other options the menu has to offer.

The nutella banana calzone... Definitely not a recommendation. The server made it sound so delicious but tasted like it was made with their feet, not hands. Sick.

We got 3 calzones to pick up. All of them are so good, especially the Garden, which is vegetarian friendly. I prefer my food less salty than usual so Garden is just right. It is made of all veggie inside so it is less salty than the meaty calzones. The other two have a lot of meats inside so they are kinda salty for my reference. For the 1st time I have complained that there is too much meat for me.

Nothing fancy about this place, but great quality. This a great low-key place to grab some good food, a couple beers, and catch up with some friends. The calzones are superb, and many options are available. There is a great beer list as well. Prices are affordable, and appropriate for the portion sizes. This place is keeping it simple, and doing it well.

Food was well prepared and nicely presented. I am not a fan of self service ( place order at counter and get your own drinks) but it works for lunch and the Clayton crowd.

  • Keli H.

I am so happy that this place opened an additional location in Clayton because it fantastic! I had the Fatty B and added spinach. The meatballs were sliced so it was easier to eat and the calzone was filled to the brim. It was also big enough for me to have a meal the next day which is always a bonus. My boyfriend and I split the Smokehouse salad which I would get again today if I could leave work. The butter lettuce and housemade BBQ ranch is really what made the dish excellent. We ordered at the counter and had a beer while we were waiting - really great selection of craft beer and friendly staff.

I've been to the downtown location many times and came to check out the Clayton location. I was most impressed by the employees - they had fabulous recommendations (blackberry chocolate stout beer, queso on the side, etc) that I've never heard before but thought completely added to the whole experience. Highly recommend the Meet Me in St Louie. Also tried the Costanza with queso sauce & was not disappointed. Went with a small Strawberry Fields salad to start. Yum!!

First time eating at Sauce on the side today; I took my Carmen calzone to go. The crust was delicious, soft, slightly chewy and golden brown. The fillings and seasoning were tasty but out of proportion. There was a good amount of meat but hardly any spinach and A LOT of cheese. I am usually the last one to complain about too much cheese, but in this case it just made the whole calzone too salty to properly enjoy. I will probably go back again and hope this was just a one time fluke.

Not only are the calzones delicious, but the customer service is unmatched! There was a mistake with my order and the manager resolved the issue quickly, professionally and in a very friendly manner. The fountain drinks were great as well. I will be back for lunch!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
