Stopped here on our way home from KC. Nothing fancy here, just good home cooking. I closed my eyes and thought I was eating my Mom's fried chicken. Cozy place, great food and super nice people.

Good food, friendly staff. Fresh hot buffet, breakfast any time and a pork cutlet sandwich that is a monster! A very delicious monster. If my chance you have any room left in the ole tummy after your meal, they have a fantastic assortment of wonderously tasty deserts. Buon appitito amica mio!

We were driving back from Ames, Iowa on I-35 and needed some pie to get us the rest of the way home. Toot-Toot's got three buffet lines, and one of them is pie. I had coconut cream and Kim had the mixed berry--both were yummy. Homemade crusts on both slices, so we were happy clams. Our waitress and other staff were super friendly. The place is gigantic, with a lounge also, which we didn't see. They serve breakfast all day--and lunch and dinner buffets each day. Very clean place, including the restrooms, and very cheerful. Stop in, and leave room for pie!

We stopped here for the second time in the last couple years. Once again, it was a very pleasant experience. Quality food and a very helpful, friendly staff. The mashed potatoes were amazing. I could of eaten a plate of them. Diverse selection for your salad, also.

Good food, slow service. Portion sizes are huge, enough to feed two people. The water tastes funky- like it was pulled straight from a creek. I could still taste it in the lemonade and sprite too.

Just say Yes to Toot Toot. You know how diners in the middle of nowhere are basically all the same thing and suck? Well... this place has been open for 30 years because it's not like that. They have this lunch/brunch buffet there... and I don't know how to explain it other than it's everything you could want from a diner, but a little better... and all you can eat. They just had a whole ham on the buffet that you could cut and eat as much of by yourself. They also had breakfast potatoes on there... at lunch... I was waaaay too excited about it. They also had standard salad there on the salad bar... and an incredible home-made like dessert bar. The desserts went on forever and were all incredibly and straight out of the kitchen like you were at grandma's house. This was a great oasis in the middle of driving throughout the midwest and for where it was and what it was... it's getting 5 stars from me. Don't listen to Toot Toot's haters on Yelp. If you're from a bigger city than say... Des Moines... and you're driving through this "wilderness," you need to stop in.

Food was wonderful. Got chicken tender basket to share with my three year old. Service was not so great. This was my first time at toot toot, therefore I didn't know what the options were. When the waitress asked if I wanted the buffet or to look at a menu, I asked her how much the buffet costed. She replied "I don't know, like ten dollars or something, and kids buffet is like five or six dollars or something like that." Every conversation we had with her, she seemed like she really didn't know what she was doing. She never asked to refill our waters, and never asked if we wanted any sauce with our baskets. The woman working the cash register, however, seemed much more polite and like she actually knew what she was doing.

Not everything on the buffet as advertised. Ribs dried out and tough. Poor service. Glass sat empty most of the meal. Not sure if the placed changed owners or what but has gone downhill in recent years. Save your money and time and go elsewhere

What can I say about a restaurant whose walls are bare particle board? I guess I could day they are pretty darn good. The have a large breakfast buffet that gets freshly stocked. Everything on it was good. They have a rustic charm with the bare wood walls and the country hunting lodge motif. A definite stop when traveling.

As a truck driver, finding a nice meal is rare. This establishment will come retrieve you from the nearby truck stop at no charge. The salad bar includes diced ham, shredded real bacon, shredded chicken, whole green onions, and chunks of pound cake, with stewed strawberries, and whipped cream. The meatballs were decent. A but "done", but tasty. The sliced pork chops on rice had good flavor, but were a bit on the dry side. The red, skin-on mashed potatoes were good, smooth, well kept. The white gravy was probably from a package. Not terrible, but nothing notable. Steamed peas and corn are hard to get wrong. Thankfully, they didn't. The batter on the fried chicken was thankfully not centimeter thick. The actual chicken (I had a thigh) was moist and tender, and not dry. I observed someone attending to the buffet several times during my visit, including stirring the dishes to alleviate drying out, and adding water to the steam table. Basic things, yes, but overlooked more often than you'd think. Kalani was both my server, and my taxi. They provide ride service at no chargeif they're not busy. I had a great experience, and would go back again.

Stopped by for breakfast. Veggy omelet ok, hash brown greasy, biscuit with fake butter basically tasteless. Slow service but friendly. Won't be stopping here on the way back.

Stopped on the way between Des Moines and KC. Perfect halfway stop. The food was excellent reminded me of my grandmas kitchen. This is on my family's permanent must stop list. The fried chicken is the best I have ever had on the road.

The Toot Toot is a road trip classic. Just slightly off of I-35, the decor in this place is awesome. Authentic, rustic signs and just a random assortment of antiques that you can buy right off the wall. The building is a bit run down, but cozy and clean inside. After driving back from Iowa for the 1,000th time, we finally stopped here today. Honestly, the experience kinda sucked, but the place was slammed for Mother's Day brunch so I honestly feel the experience was an exception and not the rule. Our service was really slow, they were out of biscuits so I had to re-order (but wasn't given a menu to re-order off of so I kinda just picked omelet since I wasn't sure of my other options) and the pancakes weren't very good at all (chewy and tasted more like cornmeal than sweet). My omelet (ham, cheese, mushrooms) was actually really good and I liked the hash browns. My husband got an omelet as well (the Toot Toot omelet) and enjoyed it. We just would have had a better experience if we didn't have to wait forever for menus, our food and the check. I'll give the Toot Toot another try next time we are on I-35. A fun, locally owned place! Breakfast buffet is only until 10:30 on weekends, but they serve their breakfast menu all day.

We were working our way from Topeka to Cedar Rapids and needed a lunch stop. The billboards won us over. Friendly staff and okay food. Both my husband and I ordered the buffet. It wasn't anything spectacular and the fish smelled fishy. However, to be fair, I'm not really a fish person. The salad part was all fresh and clean. Very tasty. The rest of it kinda make me think of cafeteria food. The dessert bar looked fantastic though. My husband was impressed with the ice cream and I had a nibble of a brownie and some cheesecake. I'm not certain, but I don't think either one was from scratch. Actually, I think a lot of the food was pre-made packaged food... so, not bad, but not good. Very much a comfort-food eatery.

We loved Toot Toot! We stopped through today on our way to a baseball tournament with our two kids and could not have been happier. The lunch buffet was amazing with fried chicken, ham, Salisbury steak, fajitas, corn on the cob, salad and more. And the dessert bar was fantastic with four kinds of cobbler, ice cream, cookies and cake, strawberry shortcake, and fresh fruit. You can't go wrong with this cute cafe! Our kids are saying they both want to celebrate their birthdays here! Too bad it's two hours from home. Stop by!!! You won't regret it!

From start to finish, best meal I've had since I can't remember when - and it was off the buffet! Delicious (homemade?) ranch dressing & big, thick-cut homegrown tomatoes topped my salad. Scrumptious mashed potatoes with a white gravy that rivals the gravy my dad made when I was a kid. Tender, juicy, tasty ham that practically melted in my mouth. And the best of all - my buffet purchase came with a large cornbread muffin unlike anything I've ever had before. With or without the sweet butter, it is simply the most delicious muffin you will ever have in your life! I will definitely stop here again when traveling on I-35.

We travel through MO at least once a year and I usually like to go to Toot Toot. The last two times we ate there I was very disappointed. The fresh baked rolls are very good and fresh. My favorites are the fried chicken and mashed potatoes. My husband really enjoyed the meatloaf. Then to the desserts. I am a big dessert eater and Baker. I always had their white cake and white frosting. They never had it on the menu today. The cakes they had were dry and very unappealing. The pies looked like they had been there for a very long time. Probably won't go there for some time, it seems to be going down hill.

Toot Toot's biscuits are some of the best I've had, and any place that serves breakfast all day gets points from me. If I lived remotely near here I would come back and try the buffet (who doesn't love fried chicken) but I'm visiting on my way through Iowa. Also, loved the dinner rolls!

Had dinner. It was ok. I had the steak salad. Steak was cooked the way I like it, but not real flavorful. Nice presentation, too much blue cheese crumble for me, though. Great service. Fun decor. I would eat there again.

While on a weekend trip from Cedar Rapids to Kansas City with my older sister and friend, we passed by Toot-Toot and joked about the name of the place the entire weekend. It just so happened that on our way back to Iowa, we passed through Bethany around dinnertime. Figuring we'd keep our adventure interesting, we decided to stop for a Sunday night dinner. I'm definitely a fan of going to locally-owned restaurants as opposed to chains, especially when I'm on the road; but my sister and my friend were definitely more skeptical (I think they just need to get out more). Well, what started out as a joke ended up being a really fun dining experience. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive, and fielded our questions about recommendations. I can't say anything about the buffet other than about everyone else who was at the restaurant was eating it. I knew I was going to have to drive a few more hours, so I didn't want a food coma. I went off the recommendation of our waitress and ordered a veggie omelet, which came with toast and hash browns. I also had strawberry shortcake for dessert (why not have dessert from breakfast? It sounded really good!). I was really pleased with my meal...they got my order correct (no onion), and even though its hard to mess up an omelet...I've had pretty unpleasant ones other places. It wasn't something I could rave about...but it definitely was tasty and hit the spot. It certainly was enough food for me. My dining mates also seemed pleased. My sister ordered the special for the evening, a hot roast beef sandwich, and I'm pretty sure she was shocked that it was so good to be coming from such a small-known restaurant (I told you, she needs to get out more). She raved about the meal, and had pie for dessert. My friend ordered a steak, and we were really impressed by the reasonable price (I think it was around $7). I was a big fan of the decor and the company of people in the restaurant. Everything just seemed to be from a simpler time. I really enjoyed my experience there, and I'll likely be returning on my next trip down I-35!

Anything called the Toot-Toot is automatically a roadside must-do. However, aside from the novelty of the name, there's really nothing else. The buffet is really small. The menu selection and food is somewhere between a step above Cracker Barrel and three steps below Applebee's. Staff are very friendly. There is also a lounge upstairs. Can't say I would ever stop here again.

It was inevitable that after seeing the signs on I-35 that we would one day stop at the Toot-Toot Restaurant. Unfortunately, inevitable isn't always good. Oldest daughter and I ordered from the daily specials. Mine was a sirloin steak that tasted like it had been over-cooked in a microwave. The Texas toast was burnt, as were the crinkle-cut fries. Husband went the buffet route, which he described as "okay" and "sort of blah." Our son got a cheeseburger kid's meal, which he didn't eat. (He had just woke up from being in the car, so I'm not sure if his lack of appetite had to do with the food.) Middle daughter seemed to have the best luck by ordering French toast. I think we were all secretly wishing we had her plate in front of us. The country atmosphere was great and so was the service, but neither of those can make up for poor quality food.

Found this little gem during our college tour of the Mid-West last year. Can only comment on the buffet...very limited selections at lunch but each of them are real good! I think their ranch dressing is hands down the best I have ever tasted. Fried foods weren't greasy and perfectly crispy. The servers were so kind and friendly and the restaurant was clean. Returned back over Christmas break and had dinner buffet this time around with a whole separate room with another buffet making more options available. When our server learned we were from CT, she expressed her sincere remorse for the devastating Newtown shooting which happened just 8 days earlier. Even asked for suggestions as to what she could do to help their community. What a wonderful human being! Inexpensive, quick in and out, and good quality makes this one of our favorite places when we head to KC from UIowa!

Should be 5 stars for the food! Best home-style cooking buffet in 100 miles...very reasonable prices too. Can't comment on the custom order menu. A locals place. Stopped here with the family on a drive up to Iowa. Kids and adults had a great meal! Only four stars because their undersized one-holer bathrooms with an old weak electric hand dryer. Put some paper towels in there so folks will actually take the time to wash their hands...especially at a buffet joint!!

Having a client in the area, I got to know Bethany, MO; a bustling small city in the shadows of the borders of both Iowa and Nebraska, and midway between KC and Des Moines. Bethany has a few reasonably good eateries, but Toot-Toot IS Bethany. There are a few dining rooms here, one upstairs with the bar, and a family dining room downstairs. The downstairs room also hosts a lunch buffet. Service is friendly, and there is a general effort to make visitors feel welcomed. While both dining rooms are impossibly dated, they're clean and comfortable. Prices are very reasonable. The menu and the buffet feature a wide range of choices, including several which are local favorites. Substantial, carb-heavy meals are handled better than are salads and finesse cuisine; this would only be a problem if it weren't done well, and that isn't the case at Toot-Toot. The burgers are quite good; solid beefy taste and juicy. I liked the buffet's fried chicken; moist, flavorful and minimally greasy. This is good, "All-American" food. Seasoning, beyond salt and pepper (both sometimes overused), is considered "exotic." The kitchen's instincts will be to consider beef with anything more than a hint of pinkness not ready for human consumption. Accepted for what it is, the area food-- and Toot-Toot in particular-- is tasty and sustaining. BTW, the restaurant's name is a quaint railroad reference.
