Good: - Great selection of bottled beers from various regions - Fast service - Very warm and comfortable (comparatively to the external, much cooler temperature) Bad: - The famed smokehouse pork ribs are much to be desired of. It's as if they cooked just one side, and poured BBQ sauce on the top and let it cook some more for a bit. The worst part to all of this was that the membrane from the underside of the ribs weren't even removed prior to cooking, which makes this quite a chore to eat given the bad texture and the membrane also destroys a lot of potential flavor this could have had.

This star is a pitty star, I have been to this place a couple times and everytime I go there am ignored, when I sit down or when I try to get the attention of a bartender to order a drink, I get a pointer finger meaning they are to busy to get a beer. I never write reviews but after tonight i feel oblogated to write one. The girls there are only intrested in "regulars", and if you come in there and never been there, or the servers/bartenders dont know you, you will get ignored and given bad service. Very terrible service I will never go there again.

There are always lots of cars/trucks outside of the Sawmill but don't be fooled this is not the place to go to eat. They are open late and have a good craft beer list, but the food is BAD.

I ordered the 16 oz ribeye medium well. I received a 10 oz piece of meat (not ribeye) well done and tasteless. It was not seasoned at all! Do not order!! However, the beer was good! The bartender was very nice and comp'ed a beer for me.

Last two trips were horrible. Went up couple months ago and had a bad experience, and again this past night hoping to find my last trip was a fluke... Sadly both had the same results... Slow service even though it was only about 1/4 full. My burger had no flavor, fries were over salted, soggy and cold. I wasn't asked how the meal was until my meal was nearly finished as I was extremely hungry and couldn't wait any longer to get the meal fixed. To make matters worse, I ordered a beer but but instead of getting the beer I ordered, I was given a beer that was said to be " close to the same thing", which it wasn't even close. I should have been informed the ordered beer was out of stock, instead of just assuming I wanted the "close" substitute. I would have gladly made a different choice if I had been properly informed. To make matters worse, as I'm finishing my meal I was told the beer I originally order was surprisingly found in the cooler... Too little too late. It was also strange seeing no constant uniforms between the wait staff. I have been here many times over the years when traveling through town always had good food and service until now. I will not be back

I booked our retired teacher's luncheon on one of the hottest days this summer. The place was fully air conditioned, the waitstaff was excellent, and the food was fabulous! Stop in to cool off and have a great meal!

Nice place, decent food, but a little too rowdy to suit me. Maybe it's because it was a Saturday nite. Adventures is much quieter.

3.5 stars really. Nice place, good food. $2 mystery beer special which is available all the time. Good service. Would visit more often if they made an effort to cover more sports. The have lots of events which is good. They need more tv's

Salt of the earth would best describe the talent at this "local" Hooters-style bar/grill. Service was good. Food was good but timed badly. After living in the Canadian wilderness for a week and only eating what we caught, this was a welcome stop on our way back to the twin cities to catch a flight.

First off. I'll say I will never eat here again. Here is what we ordered. Followed by what was wrong with it. Artichoke dip. Chips were of generic quality. Like Great Value. The dip I'm sure was microwaved because it didn't have that glow on top that it had been heated in an oven- like the picture shows. Very little quantity on the dip portion and a huge basket of generic corn chips. Grilled chicken Caesar salad. The romain lettuce was finely shredded. Like shards. Chicken was pre bought and probably Tyson, no grill taste what so ever. There was at lease an entire can of sliced black olives thrown all in there and they tasted like the can they came from. No croutons And a sprinkle of grated, not shredded parmesan cheese, served with a bread stick. The salad dressing that accompanies this is ICK! When they describe it as tangy on the menu, they should state it tastes like vinegar, gross. All of this about this salad is wrong wrong wrong. Who shreds their lettuce for Caesar salad? No croutons ? Black olives ? Grated sprinkle of cheese? Vinegar store bought icky dressing? This salad was 11.99. If your going to charge that much for a meal salad your Absolutely nuts. No comparison to Texas Roadhouse Caesar salad, and I believe they charge about the same price. The person who created this nightmare, well. Gives shame to Chefs and eating establishments. And the Iron Range in General ! Prime rib dip and fries. The meat on this tastes decent. Proportions on this sandwich small, so if you have a hearty or large appetite, you may still be hungry after this. Fries were OK at best. For about 10$ they could improve this a bit better. Garlic butter parmesan wings. 9.99 I think. We didn't taste butter or garlic on these. Maybe a hint of Parmesan. Weak at best. Boring, bland I think one reviewer also commented. Cocktails. Don't order a cocktail with diet pop. Apparently they feel the need to charge you more for the diet pop according to my slip. I won't go back. The waitress was decent. But the food was ICK. Don't waste your money eating there.

Fun place to grab a drink on my way to Crane Lake. Their burgers are pretty decent.

This place is all show and no go. They have a big impressive looking menu and a building right on the highway and don't know what to do with it. I live in the area and give it a try once every year or so just to see if they have gotten better. Not a chance. The food here is at very best average. You would be doing your taste buds a favor to pass on eating here and go just about any other place.

Would give 2.5 stars. We were there on a Saturday night at 6p. Place was about half full. $5.50 draft beers (ouch). Service was friendly but on the slower side. Food was mediocre. Burger was burned. Onion rings were greasy. Chicken was burned as well. The bathrooms were nice. We have friends that always stop here when they drive through so not sure if we caught them on a bad night or what. We'll be trying somewhere different next time we drive through.

Good food, service, location. Was in town snowboarding and found this place. Reviews in Yelp were pretty poor, but Virginia MN doesn't have many other options. The blu cheese burger was great, chicken strips were also great. Ribs were OK but I wouldn't get them again. Service was really good. Other reviewers complained but my waitress was very friendly and attentive. Also attractive +1. Overall pretty good food. I would stop here again. I only detracted a star because the place was pretty dirty and gross. The tables are vinyl and need to be replaced, floors are nasty etc.

Would have been a petty decent meal if they got our order right, smiled, remembered we were there and that we were paying customers. Yeah, but how was the food? Meh. Northwoodsy standard fare and some pretty good smoked brisket. Nothing special other than the SUPER service no one got....ever.

Burger was pretty darn good. Service was pretty darn slow. Call it breaking even, but the burger wasn't good enough to make me stop here again.

Ok, so, I'm driving through town and need to stop for lunch. I tell myself not to waste an opportunity! Why eat at one of the many chain places surrounding this place? Try someplace independent and local! So I did, and I spent almost every moment wishing I'd have gone to the Arby's across the street (I really am grossed out by Arby's usually). To start with, the place has no A/C. Apparently they used to but when it broke the owners decided not to buy a new one (that's what the waitress said). It was 90 degrees outside when I stopped and it may have actually been warmer inside; it was completely miserable. To continue, I was not able to place my order for 30 min after coming in. I very seriously considered walking out after sipping my soda for half an hour waiting. There wasn't even a waitress around to flag down. Trying to be smart, I ordered the app sampler instead of a meal, thinking it would be faster to come out. No dice, it was another 20-25min. Everything was dark dark, like the oil was old or too hot. The french-fry-like-item was clumped together in one huge glob. The food was steaming hot, unfortunately it was too hot in the place for it to cool off. I wasted over an hour sweating my proverbial balls off in this disappointment of a restaurant. In retrospect I wish I would have gone through any of the disgusting chain drive-thru's instead of stopping here.

Had the ribs... They were either fatty or beef jerky... No in between. Would not order again. Have had better at chain restaurants. The patty melt was okay. Service was disjointed. Lots of cars, beware of food.

North woodsy decor. Loud bar scene. Bacon cheeseburger good along with the taco salad, good. Smoking area thats semi-enclosed, right as you come in the door, not good. I would come back for the food

I was in town for business. Stopped here for supper. Brisket sandwich was rubbery, fries average, beer was cold. I reached under my seat to pull it closer to the table and had to peel my hand off the bottom, it was so sticky. yuck! went and washed my hands. Not much in town but I'll find somewhere else next time I'm in the area.

This place was pretty fun, there was a lot of people there that were really friendly. The drinks were alright bartender did her job and got people drunk. The food smelled good but I didn't get anything here, I will be back to try the food soon!

The Sawmill was the location for our 30th Class Reunion in 2001, and we were very disappointed at that time. They had no air conditioning and temps were in the 90's, our party was located on the upper floor - even hotter, as I recall, the buffet menu consisted of mashed potatoes and gravy - ugh! However, it is located in our home town of Mt. Iron, and has experienced several changes of management over the past 10 years, so when the 40th came around, we decided to give it another try. Once again, we were extremely disappointed, but for many more reasons. First of all, the price we negotiated for the buffet was $16 per plate, but the bill came in at 18.95 per plate! After complaining, they lowered it to 16.95. Whle the food was acceptable, the fact thatt they would not honor their negotiated price left a bad taste in our mouths! Secondly, the party room on the top floor is open to the first floor, and between the buzz of conversation on both floors and the loud, head-banging music that never stopped, we found ourselves shouting at each other to be heard. Really tiresome by the end of the night. Thirdly, only one person was assigned to tend the bar and handle the whole room. Drinks were served in plastic cups - how tacky! Plus, they did not have a fully stocked the bar, so any order beyond the basics, such as tonic water or call brand liquor, required our wait person to make a round trip to the downstairs bar, thus leaving us totally unattended! There were 42 of us - a decent number to keep a bartender busy full time. Her numerous trips to the downstairs bar over the course of the evening created a huge service gap. All in all, the consensus is that our next gathering, in 2013, will be held at another venue. First time shame on you. Second time shame on us. Third time? We'd be crazy!

Stopped for a break on the way to the lake. Pretty big place, it's on two levels. Good beer selection. Noisy, several TVs with sports. I'm guessing it's the biggest bar in town. Looks like a mill from the outside. What more to say?

The Sawmill has been my regular stop every time I find myself staying the night on the Range, which has been pretty often over the course of the last few years. I've taken to going to the Sawmill for dinner and a few brews whenever I spend the night, as I'm usually staying at the hotel across the parking lot. I've only stopped in once for lunch, but the experience was similar to every dinner I've had there minus the accompanying beer. Since I've usually found myself coming into Virginia later in the evening I've never actually been here during normal dinner hours, and I've never bothered to sit in the dining area, preferring the bar instead. There's apparently an off-sale liquor store attached to the bar, though I've not had the need to ever take anything away. The place has a warm feel to it, albeit a bit cavernous in the dining areas, and the bar seems to be fairly popular with both locals and fellow travelers from the nearby hotel. The food at the Sawmill is pretty excellent across the board, though I haven't come close to making my way through the menu. The last time I was there I saw they had an extra summer menu with a few interesting variations, but I'm a sucker for my regular choices and have a hard time varying from habit. My top three: buffalo chicken wrap (as always), walleye sandwich, and the chicken wild rice wrap. The walleye sandwich is one of the best I've had, not overly fried or greasy, with an excellent hoagie roll. The chicken wild rice wrap is interesting in that is has a special sauce, kind of like a hollandaise, that complements the grilled chicken and wild rice very well. There are also pizza and pasta options but I've never gone so far as to try any of them - maybe if I were with a couple of people or having a less impromptu dinner. The kitchen closes at 10, and there have been a couple of times during the summer months that I've missed the cut-off and settled for a couple of beers in lieu of a proper dinner. There was the option of frozen pizza, but I passed. Prices are on the high side, but given the quality I don't really mind it. I like the beers on tap, usually opting for the Schell - last time it was the excellent Firebrick - and usually in 22 oz format. The only thing that keeps this off my four-star list is the bartenders can be standoffish, to the point where I've sat unattended for what seems like forever on an otherwise slow night. It's happened enough where I've grown to expect it. Other than that quibble I've got nothing bad to say about the place. I even caught a Cubs game on the TV the last time I was up, definitely a first as it's usually the Twins and nothing else. I'd give the place a solid 3.5 if I could. The Sawmill is pretty much a lock for favorite place up on the Range for dinner, and I've stayed at the nearby hotel purposely in order to take advantage of the proximity.
