The Coho is a nice little stop with a surprising selection of beverages and unique pizza choices. We were greeted with bright smiles all around and enjoyed our experience there. It's quaint and clean and i would stop there again. Thank you very much!

If you are not an earlier riser and want breakfast and it is 10:59 am don't go to Coho. They close the grill for breakfast before 11:00 (before the posted time when you have been standing in line) and will send you in unappreciatively to Blue Fin Grill who serve a wonderful breakfast until noon.

Excellent food! Great pizza, sandwiches, and soup! A must try if you are in the area.

This is a small place with a comfy atmosphere. There are gifts for sale and attractive paintings. I had the granola pancakes, which were fine and filling. Nothing on the North Shore is a bargain, so this place is a little pricey. I'd go back.

We just stopped for a quick bite on our way home from Grand Marais. It was absolutely amazing!!! The staff is wonderful. The restaurant is quaint and cute, and the food is wonderful! I highly recommend stopping here for lunch or dinner. The pastries are great as well. I had a Parmesan Spinach scone! Wow!!! My husband and I came up 1 year ago and it was our first experience of Coho Cafe. I tell all my friends to stop now! It has become a must stop! Enjoy!

COHO CAFE CARAMEL CROISSANT OMG COHO CAFE CARAMEL CROISSANT OMG COHO CAFE CARAMEL CROISSANT OMG OMG OMG I *could* stop my review of Coho Cafe there, but I'll be kind enough to include a few other non-croissant-related details. We were staying in the Lutsen Sea Villas just up the road and stopped in for coffee one day. It was a cute place with friendly service so we decided to come back the next day for lunch. Espresso drinks: Yum! In fact, makes me bitter that I can get a better latte (or a latte at all) in the middle of Small Town Northern Minnesota than by my home or work in St Paul. Also, the to go cups are compostable. Yay! Adult drinks: Coho Cafe also serves beer and wine. Bakery: As I may have mentioned, we had a caramel croissant and it was FABULOUS. Amazing. I also took home a loaf of kalamata olive bread, which they sliced for me. Also delicious, and I think they bake all or most of the baked goods onsite. There are also chocolates, desserts, and pre-made sandwiches. Restaurant: Breakfast is served until 11am, and then it's the lunch menu (not sure about dinner). We each had a sandwich and my boyfriend also had a cup of soup. Everything was tasty and seemed fresh. I loved the ciabatta bread (it can often be too hard and dry) and ordered my chicken sandwich without cheese and it was still moist (often this turns a sandwich into a dry and bland situation). Service: We interacted with four different employees and they were all as cheery as could be. They do seem a bit short staffed though, so I can't disagree with the reviews that mention long waits. I'd say go somewhere else if you're in a huge hurry, but your options are somewhat limited when most towns in the area have a population in the triple digits. Gift shop: There are some local and random items for sale at Coho Cafe. Will we be back: I've only been to the North Shore once so who knows if I'll be back to the area, but if I return, I will absolutely make a stop at Coho Cafe!

Decent food, high prices. Take out if you can or you'll die of hunger while you wait. I like posting long reviews, but that's basically it.

My husband and I are here on our first night of vacation. It was a Saturday night, and CoHo was very busy. We were lucky to get a seat right away. The server who sat us wanted the drink orders right away so we had to pick quickly. After that time seemed to stand still. On a busy weekend night there was only one server. We waited a long time to place orders and forever for the food. The meals were great, but not worth the wait. Days later we decided to give them another shot thinking it would be faster on a Tuesday night. Calling in a pizza order, I was immediately placed on hold - for 10 minutes! I hung up and took my business elsewhere. Thus place is great for coffee and quick treats and a meal if you are not in a hurry. Would be wonderful if more servers were hired.

This little cafe was such a great find! We had a fantastic breakfast with great coffee and chai and even got some sandwiches and snacks to bring with us to eat for lunch on our hike. I will definitely go back!!

The Coho Cafe was a great find. I was recommended to this place last year on a business trip. I didn't check into the Cliff Dweller hotel up the road from Tofte until about 8:00 PM and I was nervous that I would not be able to find a place to eat, but to my luck the Coho Cafe was open and quite busy. I picked up a club sandwich to go my first visit, and while the sandwich took a while to be made I had time to run across the street and pick up a few groceries at the general store. The sandwich was delicious and the side of pasta salad was exceptional. The only downside was that I forgot to take a fork, so I employed my MacGyver skills and used the toothpick from the sandwich. I came back on a subsequent trip and took full advantage of the Coho Cafe. I came through Tofte in the afternoon and pulled over for a quick pick-me-up. The coffee here is truly excellent. Later on that evening I returned for dinner. I was convinced that I would try the pizza, as I was told that this was the specialty. However, I could not resist the muffaletta, and I have no regrets about this decision. I ordered a cup of the soup de jour, which I believe was potato chowder, and had a few more cups of the coffee. My sandwich was top-notch, one of the best muffalettas I've had outside of the French Quarter or my mom's kitchen. I ordered the pasta salad again, and it was even better using proper cutlery. I really liked my server - he was quick and attentive and kept my coffee hot. Unfortunately he was given a real hard time by the table of old ladies seated adjacent to me for no good reason other than old ladies like to complain about meaningless things. I made sure to tip him excessively, because I could certainly empathize with that situation. I meant to stop for breakfast the next morning but the weather conspired against me. I ended up fogged in and spent the better part of the morning in a futile effort to wait it out. However, I certainly plan on returning the next time business takes me on up Highway 61.

Everything is relative, right? In a major city I would not have a very high opinion of this place but, since it is the only place making fresh baked goods daily within ten minutes of Lutsen, Tofte, and Schroeder, I feel compelled to recommend it. The breads are all very good and the pastries are so-so but it's not like you're going to make your own pastries on vacation (or are you?). Their lunch offerings are all yummy but I wouldn't necessarily go way out of my way for any of them. Some friends of mine swear by their pizza but I thought it was just okay, definitely better than Sven & Ole's but nothing to write home about (or yelp! about (or did I just do that?)). There are a few senior staff members who make me feel like I'm being naughty by purchasing from their establishment. Kinda quirky but they're always happy to receive money in exchange for goods so it's easy to overlook. The dining room is very open and airy and it's a nice place to have a quiet lunch rain or shine.

I've been coming here since the place opened in...2004 (?) It's become very mediocre and overpriced. The servers (which are typically college students) are sweet but completely inexperienced and super awkward. I ordered the pasta-your-way for $11 and added sautéed vegetables for $5. I got a plate of bland, boring pasta and NINE pieces of undercooked vegetables. Next time I'll go across the street, spend under $10 to buy the ingredients, and make something better at home to feed my whole family.

Up on the North Shore, your dining choices become limited. For foodies, this is akin to a nightmare come true. For everyone else, just be cool and lower your standards. That said, Coho Cafe isn't terrible. They offer fresh baked goods that are a relief from the slightly-mouldering baked goods offered at the market across the street. The soups are a bit salty but good. If they have bread pudding, GET IT. It was super moist and delicious, with bits of dried fruit. Don't drink anything but the plain coffee; they were out of the regular so Sam poured himself something that had a long name containing the word "tiramisu." That was a mistake. We ordered a pizza to go and they were ready within thirty minutes. Pizza on the North Shore reminds me a lot of tavern-style pizza, where all the toppings are hidden under a thick blanket of low-quality mozzarella. We still ate it, because we knew there were mushrooms and nuggets of a very good wild-rice studded sausage underneath. It cost $28 though, which kind of hurt for something I associate with Heggie's-level quality. Coho Cafe is uneven, but generally fairer in price compared to the Bluefin Grill. They cater the best they can to a wide range of customers.

Went here for an iced coffee and they did not have any in the middle of summer. No espresso either. Very cute place though. #fail

It poured rain all night so there was no way we were getting a fire started the next morning. I was a little hesitant to come here based on previous reviews and after having a tasty, hot breakfast out of the rain, I felt compelled to write this as I still sit in the cafe in hopes that it helps someone else make the decision to come here. Sure, the menu is small and the food probably takes a little longer than most big city restaurants, but hello! You're on the North Shore and more importantly, you're likely on vacation. Take your time with your trip and enjoy it! My husband and I both thought breakfast was very good. The wild rice sausage is a real treat. I had the granola pancakes and I don't know if it was the syrup or the pancakes, but they were fantastic. The coffee was also very good here, and while my latte came in a paper to go cup (which I actually prefer), coffee was served in mugs. The bakery case looks amazing, filled with lots of choices, ranging from paw looking bear claws, triple layer cakes and Hostess like looking monster cupcakes. Yum! So glad we ventured to quaint, dry and warm cafe where we got friendly service and took the time to relax on our vacation.

We had the call of the wild pizza. It was super delicious. Not a huge menu selection, so I'd really only recommend it for light lunch. Can't comment on the breakfast.

How can it take over an hour to get 2 sandwiches and pizza when the place is half full? If you are diabetic, pregnant or even mildly hungry do not go here. If you just had a large snack prior to coming you may be able to manage the wait. We have been here several times and this year discussed amongst ourselves "Can we tolerate the usual extremely long wait for food?" We thought maybe it seemed really long in the past because we were with busy kids . Or maybe it seemed long before because we wanted to get on the road home . Maybe we were just impatient that day. So unwisely we decided to try again with our group of 4. This visit we noted the time and it was OVER 1 hour to get the sandwiches and pizza. They were fine but it really spoiled the mood to wait so long. The staff of young people are friendly but not well versed in service. For example , an elderly man brought his cup of coffee to the counter to ask for a warm up. The server pointed out a microwave in the dinning room and when he couldn't spot it she walked him over to it and pointer it out. Really? Can't the poor guy get a fresh cup while waiting his hour for food . We DO suggest getting take out bakery goods . They are great .

Been back a every year on the way up to Canada. Every year there is always different foreign students who are working for the summer which is always cool to have meet different people from around the world. The feel is almost always fantastic and has always been that way. The only complaint about it is the service can very from the different waiters/waitresses that come through each year. But no matter what it is always a great place to stay.

Ordered a sausage pizza and it was delivered to our room at Bluefin. The pizza and the sausage was horrible. It could only compare to a very inexpensive frozen pizza. Would not recommend the pizza....

Went "Up Nort" for the first time with friends and they had been here before so we stopped for lunch. I had one of the best sandwiches I've ever tasted (and I've been around a while). We ordered at the counter after standing in line for a while and it was worth the wait. I felt the food was made with care and it was of very high quality. I will go back whenever I am back up there for more of the tasty items on their interesting menu. The service was very pleasant and helpful too.

Love this little cafe just north of Surfside Resort on highway 61 along the North Shore. Great for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. We have a hard time driving by CoHo without stopping for at least a latte, a piece of Cheesecake, or that awesome pita breakfast pizza. I love sitting outside on the deck taking in the ambiance of the North Shore and enjoying the flowers and humming birds that surround you while you dine. CoHo is pricey, and the service here is not to speedy. If you plan on dining in, don't expect your food too fast..even if your the only ones there. BUT, it is worth the wait. The CoHO Club (Sandwich with a side of chips and salsa) might just change your life....if you can wait 15 minutes for it :)

Nice place to eat in Tofte. One of the only places to eat in Tofte. Ha. Our first night in Tofte we were running a little late so we walked over to the Coho for dinner. Lovely walk along the lake walk between Bluefin Bay's main area. It was 8:30, and we didn't know until we arrived that it closes 9, but they were insistent upon seating us. Their wait staff was nothing but lovely. I felt like I knew them a little when we left. We sat inside and had a cute table with a tealight candle. This looks more like a deli, yet they made it seem more intimate. No complaints. We ordered a large Call of the Wild pizza and we are oh-so-glad we did. Four kinds of fresh mushrooms, local wild rice sausage, tomato sauce and so much cheese. For $20, it fed the two of us for both dinner and breakfast the next day. The pizza was so good that we went back two days later and ordered the exact same thing. They offer beer/wine and we were happy to see a satisfactory local/regional beer menu. My fave was the Split Rock Bock. Didn't try any other items, though their desserts looked to-die for. They also offer ice cream/gelato and take-out breakfast groceries (single servings of cereal, pastries, etc.).

A fun little spot along a road. Is it morning and your staying in your cute little condo? Time to hit up breakfast at coho. Is it lunch or dinner and you don't want to cook? Get a pizza to go. Or sit in and snack on something fresh from the deli section or order something cooked for you off the menu. As a girl that doesn't like pastries...I have to say I am ADDICTED!!! To the chocolate croissants here. Trevor you do a killer job making them. Fun note most of the dishes they serve come with fruit. As a girl that love herself some fruit this makes every meal better in my mind.

While on our trip up to the BWCA we stopped here to grab one last bite of fresh food for the week. I had a hard time figuring out what to order. I went with the Coho club sandwich. The price was a bit too high for me and the taste of the club was comparable to Jimmy Johns. I think next time I drive through, I'll go across the street and by the ingredients to make a club. It'll be cheaper, faster and probably taste better.

One star for breakfast, three stars for pizza. Breakfast - ordered the scrambled eggs that came with vegetables and "herb goat cheese". I have bought many different kinds of herb goat cheese over the years, this is something I love. I don't know WHAT they are using in theirs, but my omelet was like eating moist potpourri. It was such a strong flavor of rosemary...really disgusting. I have never seen herb goat cheese with rosemary in it, so it was really not what I was expecting at all. But even if you were a big rosemary fan...this was just way too much. And the eggs looked kind of grayish and deflated....like the scrambled eggs you would get from a cafeteria. I can't ever remember sending food back. I know it must have happened once or twice in my life, but clearly, this is not something I usually do. The girl was very nice about taking it back, and I asked for the pancakes instead (my husband had ordered them and they were good). One pancake is good....when I cut into the second pancake, raw batter oozes out. So it's not just like the middle is still a little bit sticky.....one side of the pancake is dark brown, the other side is stark white. Batter in the middle. Le sigh. All of the workers are summer exchange workers from other countries (mostly eastern Europe/Russia), which is kind of cool....but they're temporary workers. So maybe the cook doesn't care too much about his job, because he knows it's not going to last anyway? Since I had already sent one dish back, I didn't want to look like a bitch sending another dish back....even though I couldn't eat half my panckes. Sad face. Even though breakfast sucked, my husband really wanted to get a little pizza from Coho for a snack. It was good. We got the primavera, I think. Chock full of good stuff. Good, but nothing special. There must be some kind of financial incentive to hire the exchange workers...maybe they don't have to get them health care or something?

Everytime I stop in this place on the way home from Lutsen its PACKED and way under staffed so when I pulled in this past Sunday to check out the line, I was happy to find there wasnt one :) However I ordered a iced mocha and it was probably the worst iced coffee drink Ive ever gotten from a place that specializes in coffee. My advice to you is to keep driving and find another place for coffee on your way back to the cities :)

The food was decent. The atmosphere was cozy. We stopped in for breakfast and it was crowded. They have some great teas and breads/pastries. You order at the counter and take a number and the food is brought out to you.

We absolutely loved this place! I had a pita breakfast pizza thingy that was amazing. The coffee was even really good. When we left, we decided to get some coffee to go. We got back in line to pay for that, along with a loaf of bread, and she remembered that we had coffee with breakfast and didn't charge us for the coffee to go. It's a minor thing, but it's the little details that count. Most places wouldn't have said anything and just let you pay for the coffee again. The bread was outstanding! Any time I'm in the area, I will definitely be stopping back in.

As Josh W. put it, in a city this place would not be very recommendable. But along the shore in Tofte, it's a good lunch option--particularly if you're just coming off a camping trip. Having spent the better part of the week camping, I was psyched to eat some food that was prepared by somebody else and have a great cup of coffee. After waiting in line, we placed our orders and snagged a table outside on the patio with a view of (kind of) the lake and (mainly) a parking lot. The sun was shining and made our wait pass more quickly. I am not sure why the sandwich-making process is so slow, but we waited about a half hour for two sandwiches and chips and salsa. My sandwich--the Coho Club--was delicious, though be warned that the bread is DRENCHED in butter... sinful and scrumptious. The coffee left lots to be desired. I briefly considered breaking out our camping propane burner and dehydrated coffee in the parking lot to make my own brew but decided against it. The bread was delicious, and the baked goods looked fresh and tasty but I passed on buying a treat as I was stuffed from lunch. I would definitely go back to this place again when I'm around Tofte and in need of lunch.

I want to like this place, I really, really do. We had to eat there twice with some certificates from our stay at Bluefin Bay. First we tried breakfast. The place was packed with mushers from the John Beargrease Marathon and we were worried the food would take forever, but it was actually pretty quick. We had the salsa chicken breakfast wrap and a breakfast pizza. Both sounded awesome on the menu and looked tasty, but in the end were kind of bland. The breakfast potatoes seemed to have been made several hours before and just left in a chaffing dish. $2.50 for two slices of nothing special bacon. The lattes were on the rough side, but still OK. Luckily the friendly staff saved the meal for us. Next we tried lunch. The service wasn't as good and we waited forever at the counter for someone to take our order. The woman in front of us freaked out and left saying, "It's not f-ing worth it". We finally ordered and it took 30 minutes for a meatball sandwich and a salmon sandwich. After waiting about 15 minutes we overheard the woman at the counter say something about our order and realized she forgot us. No apology, no acknowledgement that we waited forever in a place where everyone around us waited ten minutes tops. This was all the more annoying because we had a baby with us who was getting bored and a dog waiting out in the car. The salmon was pretty impressive and the pasta salad really involved and flavorful. The meatballs seemed home made and the bread was good. Again, lattes OK. I do like their seven layer bars though! SO. It's not the worst place in the world and if you don't mind the wait the food is fresh and creative. But if the Bluefin Grill is open I would totally suggest a trip down the road.

Super SLOW!! Only one person taking orders and she was also making the special coffees. We waited for over 20 minutes after finally ordering to get our food. The cafe scramble was delicious with fresh asparagus and goat cheese but a small portion and only warm for a high price. The breakfast pita was also not hot but still tasty. Order coffee and rolls instead.

Delicious cafe right off of Highway 61. The pizza we had was fantastic. The order took a little longer than expected so they immediately offered us free desert. Exactly everything you would want and expect from a cafe. Recommended for fans of home made deserts and someone looking for a healthier alternative.

I've always been kind of torn about this place. We have been coming up here for 15 years, and we always make a stop in at some point while staying at BlueFin bay. Basically stated - I think their food is great, but I think their service is awful. There has been more than one instance where I've waited for a long time for someone to take our order (like the other reviews say), but more than that, I would say their staff is just unfriendly. This has been about the 5th time or so that we've had an unfriendly experience, so I thought it was time to say something about it. This very last time, I had eggs I asked for over-easy, and they came out undercooked. When I went to say something out it, I had the person tell me that's how I ordered them - over-easy. To me, over-easy is not under-cooked and slimy, but that's besides the point because mistakes are made, so I just expected him to cook me new ones. But, since his response was like "well, that's how they're supposed to be done" I was disappointed. The cost is takes to re-make eggs is so negligible, I was beside myself he didn't just offer to re-make them. Either way, this type of experience has happened too much, so I felt the need to write a review. I love the idea of the place, the location to BlueFin, the atmosphere and the food, for the most part. I just think they are lacking in customer service.

We stopped here on the way for breakfast from leaving Lutsen which was recommended by a friend. They have a patio where you can sit in the back where you can enjoy your AM coffee, quiche or pastries. You order & pay at the counter & they'll bring your cooked dish to you. Just get the napkins, utensils & condiments yourself. I really liked the fact that they even have muffaletta Italian sandwiches, that I would consider stopping by here for lunch next time I'm around the area.

Service has improved but the turkey club is still very greasy. Very good but they could go easier with the buttered griddled bread and heaping amounts of mayo. Try the magic bars! The cookies are very good too.

We picked up trail lunches here two and a half years ago, and were excited to see that it was still around this year. We ordered hearty sandwiches on thick wheat bread, and they packaged them up with an apple, gourmet organic chips and condiments. Decent selection of breakfast pastries and coffee drinks. Seems to be a typical coffee and sandwich shop with an outdoorsy, organic spin, but a closer look at the menu reveals a wide variety of inventive breakfast items, bruchettas, pizzas and pastas. Definitely worth a stop in for a casual lunch. Owned by the Bluefin Bay Resort, this is just North around the bay and looks over the water.
