For a place with a reputation for good burgers, it took way too long for me to visit this establishment. We visited on a Sunday evening and the place was packed. Would have liked a booth, but the first thing that was open was a table and we took it. The place was filled with all types, from old ladies to younger guys. The atmosphere was your typical small town bar atmosphere. The service was great. Friendly and prompt. The menus had the typical bar fare, but that's what I came there for. No kids menu, which was too bad, but I can't blame them since...well, they are a bar. I ordered a Summit Pale Ale and the bacon cheeseburger with fried onions (Swanee Burger) and fries on the side. The pale ale was served in glass you don't usually see at a bar, and the "incorrect" class for a pale ale, it was tall and skinny and seemed smaller than a pint. Not a big deal, unless you're a beer snob (like I am). The food was served and I noticed immediately the fries had that "homemade" look with the skin still on some of them and were great. The burger was great, well worth it. The bun was perfect, the meat was cooked perfect, the bacon crispy and the fried onions divine. At 1/2 lbs it was a big serving, but I enjoyed eating every last bite. All and all, if you're a burger fan this place is right for you. A very solid four stars from me. Would get up to five stars with a few improvements (beer glasses, kids menu...did I just follow beer with kids menu? Yes I did. Perhaps a little more unique decor too...)...but the best burger joint you'll get off 52!

Best burger I have had in years if not ever. Go there. Get the Swanee Burger. We stopped in on a Saturday afternoon and the place was only half full. We got a booth immediately and ordered two Swanee Burgers, A basket of fries, a Hot Chocolate and a coffee - all for under $20.00 not including tip. The fries were unremarkable. The Hot Chocolate was powdered but had little marshmallows floating on it which made me smile. The fries were under salted but plentiful. The burgers - oh the burgers. I cannot tell you the bliss we were in eating those hot juicy mountains of meat. The cheese was melted and gooey. The bacon crisp and salty. The fried onions perfect. The blue cheese they put on the side - perfect. An explosion of flavor in my mouth. The burger was so juicy I expected to be covered in grease - we were not. It was so good we went back the next day and got more. That never ever happens. Any time someone asks me where to get a great Cheeseburger - I will now state confidently and with no hesitation "The House of Coates!"

I know you know this place. If you've ever driven south on 52, you've seen it. The giant House of Coates sign is amusing, but one day do yourself a favor and actually stop in to give the place a try. I hate to launch into a cliche about the decency of small town folk, but damn if our waitress wasn't determined to save us money. Having beer? A pitcher will be cheaper if you're having more than one. Getting french fries? A basket will be cheaper than adding an order to each sandwich. A burger, grilled cheese, fries and a pitcher of beer for $20? Very nice. The burger was the real deal. Half a pound, hand formed patty. Good sturdy bun, bacon and fried onions. This burger made Dara Moskowitz's (City Pages, Minnesota Monthly) best burgers in Minnesota list, and as usual, that lady is damn right. The fries were pretty worthless, but if a half pound of ground beef heaven doesn't take care of you, you've got problems. All in all, a great little place. Quit laughing, and drop on in.

I read all the reviews (all pumped up to go), ordered what was recommended "the swanne" and even drank a few beers. EPA was good, but they couldn't find a bigger glass than a 6 oz (at almost 4 bucks). The service was good, the people were from all walks of life as previously described, but the burger was just plain boring. I felt very pumped up that I just moved to an area that had a great burger joint very close.....but left very disappointed. Western WI has many small bars that kill the burgers here. It was evident that the beef had no flavor after the first bite, and was fairly dry. This tells me that there is no fresh beef or just poor quality beef, with a sign that says famous burgers i would like more. My burger was not any different than when I bring my office staff for lunch to applebees!! Prices good, staff nice, but burger was just average!

Awesome burgers, and their chicken looked delish! I will try that next time! Waitress was funny, pretty much told us to order fries and share them! We did as told. Was perfect amount and tasty.

Went to House of Coates at about 7 on Saturday evening. Place was packed to the gills with locals. Luckily it was just me and my gal, and we were seated immediately. We started with an order of onion rings. They were crunchy and fried well-enough to our liking. I'd give it an 8/10 because they were definitely underseasoned. We each ordered a Swanee burger and ordered a basket of fries to split. Lame that the burger doesn't come with fries for $8, but what're you gonna do? I'm too busy to start a petition. The waitress (who was very friendly and attentive) didn't ask us how we wanted them cooked, but I specified mine medium at ordering and she was happy to accommodate. My girlfriend said the same. We had some time to kill, so we decided to donate some money to the community by getting our asses kicked in pull tabs. Not the fault of the establishment, so losing at gambling isn't reflected in this review. That'd be like saying "1 star, Kum n Go sux! I didn't win on my $20 scratch off!" when clearly the name itself is enough to warrant at LEAST 2 stars to Kum n Go, right? Sorry, got off track. Anyways, the burger was a good size, maybe a little over a 1/2 lb before cooking. Tasted fresh, but was underseasoned. Mine was cooked perfectly but could have rested a bit as it bled all over my plate like a grisly scene from a Romero movie. My girl's burger was red as a baboon's ass. She ate half cuz she wanted to put it in the microwave at home so she wouldn't get sick, or die, or some nonsense. I mean, women? Right? Basket of fries was enough to share between 2 of us. Again, underseasoned. But there's salt at the table though, so you know.... there's that at least. All in all, food was okay. They must not have a spice rack in back, but everything I ate was cooked well enough and tasted fresh. I was surprised the Swanee burger was just a 1/2 lb bacon cheeseburger. I figured if it was World Famous there'd at least be a fried egg on it or something. I might ask them to do that next time. To be continued?

The burger. It's not just a hamburger. There's a certain way that the meat is cooked that makes this burger a meal. I also enjoyed some really fresh cheese balls. Order the cheese balls early. You will still be munching on them when your burger shows up. The steak special looked good and everyone around me was loving their decision to order the steak.

Swanee burger.... Remember that!!! Ok, this is a hole in the wall that you drive by 100 times and never think to stop. Well, stop and get a burger, sure the city has matts bar or the nook but in the burbs we have the house of coates with the Swanee! For us it's a winter place, it's a warm and cozy place that screams Minnesota!! The tap beer is good, fries are great and burgers are perfect and the bill is affordable.

*** STRICTLY RELATED TO THEIR BURGERS *** The Best Is Yet To Come! The smooth sounds of ol' Frankie in the background has me thinking about my recent visit to a place advertising the following. "Best Burgers Around" and "World Famous Burgers". Well, of course that is going to get my attention and yes, yes I did pay this restaurant a visit. Settled just off the highway in the little town of Coats is the House of Coats, the restaurant bold enough to advertise such phrases. I will start by saying, the burgers being served are certainly worth eating and I would consider stopping back for another, however, if you're going to be bold, you better be able to bring it! In fact, I would ask the owners to take part in the 2015 Burger Challenge taking place in the North Loop this summer and see how they do against the competition and the champs, my pals at B52 Burgers and Brew. I ordered two Swanne Burgers, their signature burger and of course ordered them pink. I added my condiments as I usually would, cut the bad bad boy in half and there it was... No pink! While still juicy, no pink! There was no waiting for my lips and this burger to meet and thankfully, it was still a pleasant burger to consume. But... To call it the "Best Burger Around" or "World Famous", that's a stretch. As Frankie so graciously puts it, "you ain't seen nothing yet" until you've tried the other places "around" that serve better which include; King's Place (downright amazing), B52 Burgers and Brew, Jersey's Bar & Grill or my very own creations at home. If "around" is speaking to just Coats, sure! It's the only place in Coats that serves food! AND, if someone orders a pink burger, they want it to be pink, not well done. The best is yet to come and babe, won't it be fine? Yes Frankie, it sure will!

The house of Coates has probably the best burger in Minnesota! Fresh bakery buns every morning, hand pattied 1/2 burgers, two freshly made large pieces of bacon, and to top it all off with fired onions you just can't beat it! I have had the Swanee burger the past few times in and it's so good I can't get myself to switch to try something else. If you are ever driving down hwy 52 in Minnesota it is definitely worth the stop to get the best burger in the state along with that caring small town feel!

Bitch, don't kill my vibe The burger was alright(?), but what happened to Jake's? I had heard and read great things about the Swanee Burger. There is not much else on the menu; this is what they are known for. Did not live up to the hype. Asked for it medium well and it came out medium rare, at best. It was bleeding into the bun. Some people may like it this way. I am not one of them, and it is the opposite of what I had requested. Also, took them about 25 minutes to bring out the thing which was barely cooked. Sad to see Jake's across the way reduced to a mere liquor store. The good old days are gone. #nostalgic

The service is typically great here , as it was once again. This is NOT a chain restaurant and it shows. The blinds are rarely open and the ceiling is low but that does not matter once you have some good creative home cooking and a few stiff drinks. Kid friendly. Old folks friendly. Farmer friendly. Biker friendly. They even take plastic! And wow, you will even get a conversation out of a bartender that does not have a plate or jewelry store hanging out of protrusions in his or her body, A great American bar with damn good food. Locals love it! You will too!

There was a bit of a wait initially. It was a Saturday evening so I guess we expected that. I understand they were having difficulty with their credit card machine so that could've contributed to the wait. Service was excellent. My husband had the prime rib and it was just as we expected it to be.....delicious! As we were waiting, we kept seeing au gratin potatoes that looked so yummy. They didn't taste quite as yummy as they looked. Tasted a bit artificial. I had the tiger shrimp and they were just perfect. I also had the rice and that was also very good. We both enjoyed the salad bar. We would definitely stop again.

Try the Swanee burger and the cheese curds. Both are fantastic! I would not recommend going here on a Friday or Saturday. The place is very small And cramped and they are always super busy. Guess that means the food is good, right?!! If you live close by, I would Recommend doing takeout just so you don't have to wait for a table.

Stopped here on my way out of town after hearing from a buddy that they were known for their burgers. I was less than impressed with the whole experience. It has a small highway-stop burger joint feel, which is interesting, but not all that great. The burger itself was high quality and cooked exactly as I had ordered, but everything else lagged behind. The bun, toppings, sides, etc. all lacked any sort of quality, and the service was average. I've since read that this place used to be much better, so I'm not sure if it's changed or what, but I was underwhelmed. Worth the stop if you are in the area to judge for yourself, but I wouldn't go out of my way to try this again.

I love food and enjoy a really great burger. I have done the drive from Roch to Minne more times than I can count and this place sits off the side of the road like a little biker bar. I have also seen the signs advertising how fabulous their burgers are. So my daughter and I decided it was time to bite the bullet and just stop and try one. I really didn't think they were that good. Not even in the top ten best I have ever had! If I didn't come here specifically for the burger I may have tried something else and liked it better. It is an okay little bar --I guess I just had really high expectations walking in.

Checked in here for the first time last week and I must say, it was good! The place in general appears to be a bit of a dive, limited beer choices and such. However, the place is clean and pleasant. Food wise, the burgers are made fresh; as in not a frozen disk of meat. I had the vegemite burger. No, no actual vegemite on it. But, there was sauted onions, peppers, and celery (vegetables?) with cheese that made for a not surprisingly good flavor. Pops had a mushroom burger he claimed was very good as well. Fries were good and fresh and the beer nice and cold. It was slow in there so I would expect service to be good and it was. I'm almost a fan, but I'll have to check it out one more time to be sure.

The atmosphere was perfectly Minnesotan, and the food was yummy. We got the Vegamite burger, it was a big burger topped with a variety of chopped fried veggies. The food was good and the service was excellent. We were fortunate enought to have a bartender named George and a server named Jaye help us out. They were both really enthuastic, and when the Vikings scored they gave those of us at the bar a mixed app basket. We just happened to stop here on a Sunday and it was a great addition to the weekend! Bloodys, burgers, & pull tabs--thanks House of Coates!

I had a mushroom Swiss burger, and it was definitely top 5 favorite mushroom Swiss burgers I've had in my short 26 years on Mother Earth. Great taste, really juicy, and really good price. Would definitely recommend it to anyone traveling South from the Twin Cities along 52. Even if you're not hungry, get it to go. You won't regret it

Several years ago, my wife and I used to routinely stop at the House of Coates on the way back from treks to Rochester, MN. Recently, I had lunch here with a couple of friends. They'd never been. In any case, we all ordered burgers and fries and shared a basket of Beer Battered Onion Rings. The food was as good as I remembered it to be. I had the 1/3 lb. mushroom Swiss burger, medium. It was juicy, flavorful, overflowing with mushrooms and cheese and served on a fresh (non-toasted) bun. The others had the Swanee and the basic cheeseburger respectively. Both gave them two thumbs up. The fries were fine. The onion rings were very good. It may be worth noting that as advertized, there is a subtle beer taste in the batter. Of course all the alcohol has evaporated by the time the rings are pulled up out of their emersion in hot oil. This is just an FYI to those for whom this might be an issue. Service was pleasant and the atmosphere road house casual. A mix of retirees, families with young children and a few guys watching a game on one of the screens scattered around the room. A solid, no frills place to enjoy a tasty, reasonably priced meal.

Three words: Swanee Burger Yum. I've driven by the House of Coates hundreds of times on my way from Minneapolis to La Crosse over the years and have never stopped in. I guess I always imagined it to be full of locals and off-limits to city folk. Boy, was I wrong. While this restaurant/bar does have the outward and inward appearance of a joint from way up north...you'll be treated to plenty of hospitality, a clean table, cheap drinks...and an amazing burger. Despite being full about half-way through...I kept eating, and eating. The half pound of deliciously seasoned beef, paired with just the right amount of fried onions, blue cheese dressing, and cheese...this burger is best eaten as ordered...and despite ordering it well done, it was still juicy. Paired with a delicious basket of fries for an extra 1.95, this meal is a complete value. I keep having to pinching myself that the Swanee is really under 6 bucks?!? Some of these smashed burger joint owners in the Cities should make a trek to the House of Coates and learn a lesson in how a great burger can be found for under 10 bucks. It should be noted that the Swanee was voted one of the best burgers in Minnesota by Minnesota Monthly magazine. I make the drive down 52 quite often, and will definitely make the HoC a part of future road trips.

Love the House of Coates. Taco Thursday is my favorite. Lately loving their Grilled Chicken Sandwich. Really can't go wrong. House of Coates is like a small Pub with great food. Burgers are truly a winner! The service is super too! Karen G

Mighty tasty burgers! I'm a fan! They do burgers...there are a few other things on their menu, but burgers are efinitely their thing. Nothing fancy here...they serve the burger on a small plate with nothing else so order some fries if you want more than a burger. They have a full bar and a few beers on tap as well as a nice selection of bottled beer to go along with that big ol burger. It can be a busy place on Friday and Saturday nights so plan on waiting for 30-40 minutes. They turn tables fast, but the place is small so there is a good chance you will be waiting.

Specifically from the reviews on yelp, we went over to House of Coates today. I was a bit skeptical, thinking it was more bar than eats. The kids were with me. No worries--the place was filled with families, including a party of boy scouts. I (adult chickiepoo) split the Swanee Burger with my mom. We each got a side salad and shared a basket of fries with the whole table (four people). My older son got the steak special--7 oz sirloin with mushrooms and 2 pieces of garlic toast for something like $7. My younger son got the Big Canada Jack burger (Monterrey Jack cheese and canadian bacon). He loved it. In fact, we all loved what we got. All of those extras, 4 sodas, and the total was $36! FANTASTIC deal. Our server was very friendly and attentive. We were going to share a cup of chili to try it, but they were all sold out. We're only about 10-15 min away, so I have a feeling we will be back. It was definitely one of the best burgers I've had in the Twin Cities. Juicy burger, caramelized fried onions, and really thick crispy bacon. It was excellent!

This place is a bit intimidating for us city folk. We see the House of Coates sign and building and it looks like a place where you walk in the door...the jukebox stops playing...and all of the locals turn and stare you right back out the door. This couldn't be more far from the truth. I walked into the House of Coates and it was like I was walking into a nicely lit church where Jesus's light was shining down directly on me. Okay, that was weird. Anyways, I was surprised that it seemed like more of a family restaurant, and that it was clean. I ended up getting the bacon and bleu cheese burger and it was absolutely fantastic. What was even better was my wife's plain cheeseburger. The simple goodness of the cheeseburger and it's salty seasoning was absolutely amazing. Best burgers, maybe not, but damn good burgers, hell yes! I would have to say the absolute best, simple cheeseburger I've ever tasted came from the Nook. Can't wait to go back to Coats.

This place is great. A bar that is fairly nice with a tiled floor. We came here for the burgers. So, of course i got the roast beef special. My wife got the Swanee burger. Roast beef - DDD'licious. Mashed potatoes and corn were good. The Swanee burger had a slight char to the outside but had a tender slighty pink center. Cheese, Onions and bacon round up this tasty treat. The fries were a bit of a disappointment since the other food was so good. Having eaten at the nook yesterday, i know fries can be better. The service was fine. Of course though, we showed up at 11am, so we had the run of the place. Next trip to rochester you should give it a go.

My first review on Yelp Im excited woot and well sadly I have to give House of Coates here 2 stars... I would have given them the full 5 stars a few months as wow because they had been awesome service and awesome food!!! The 7oz Sirloin was always cooked to perfect of medium well without any pink and sooo very juicy still and tender which really didn't need the knife to cut it with mmmm... So the last 3 to 4 visits out of wow ummm soo many weekly visits me and my mother had gone here regularly since August... So the last 3 visits mom had their sirloin steak sadly it wasn't cooked at all the way threw and still was pink, had it returned by the time it came back the fries had become cold and the steak was cooked more instead of fresh so it became tough.... The last time was there was on a Thursday evening OK so no big deal what I thought was kinda nice they had started to due the salad bar on that night as well, when I had asked the waitress who I haven't seen before she said ooh its always been done.... OK I don't know about you all but I don't like being lied to... Ive been in on a Thursday nights before and never seen the Salad bar up, so any ways this night was the 4th time coming back since last 3 prior incidents with the steaks... So this night me and my mother decided to order the Highway 52 steak burger... We know for a fact it don't take an hour to cook it and when other tables around us get served before us that was seated after us we asked the waitress what was going on and she said it was because we had ordered it Medium Well.... LAUGH!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG wow really when its sad she had to come back after she took our order in the first place to ask how we wanted the steak in the first place and she even messed up my drink order when I had ordered a Diet Coke from the Fountain, she gave a Dt Coke from the Can.... So after that last visit back in January Im sad to say I don't think me and my mom will ever be back House of Coates..... Its sad really I was looking forward to have gone there on my Birthday that has since past in early February but that didn't happen had to settle for some thing else cause the management doesn't even care to know whats going on when regulars are getting mistreated... Me and Mom was never rude at all and always tipped very well so we cant figure out what went wrong here? If any can help please do! Thanks and cheers if you have better luck here, Patrick Allen

The Swanee burger is my absolute favorite burger in the twin cities. I usually sit at the bar or the tables by the bar...great place to eat. I bring my kids there, they love it too. Wife, not so much, but she is not as big into burgers as I am. I only get there a few times a year, but I always love it. The burgers take a while from when you order to when you get them, but they are perfectly cooked every time. Doesn't look like much from the outstide, but you won't regret it.

I'm always on the lookout for new places to try out. This was one place my family had not tried yet, so I packed up the kids and headed out there based on the good reviews. It was good, but not worth the drive. If I'm ever in the area I would stop again.

Want to see a blue collar, salt of the earth, burger-joint? Want a substantial burger made right? Go to House of Coates and hook yourself up with a Swanee Burger. I arrived at the House of Coates in the afternoon for a quick lunch. The patronage to included truckers, grandmas, bikers, and myself (with 2 kindergarteners). When looking at the HoC menu, do not expect to see a vast burger assortment , my eyes, however, were immediately drawn to the Swanee Burger ($5.95), the star of the menu. Our waitress was extremely friendly, and knew that a single cheeseburger ($4.95) would be plenty for my girls to split. Soda is served in the can, so the variety included both Coke and Pepsi products. We also decided to split an order of onion rings ($6.95). The onion rings arrived first, hot, crisp, and just how I like them; well fried, with a thick juicy onion in the middle. A little salt from the table and bingo, top 5 onion rings. The order size was plentiful. Next, the burgers arrived. Hand formed, at least an inch thick, cooked evenly throughout, and served on a soft bun with a side of a pickle spear. The Swanee included bacon, fried onions, american cheese, and a side of blue cheese dressing. It may not have been the best burger I have ever had, but I can't think of one that I clearly enjoyed more. Overall, I enjoyed my dining experience at the HOC. I do not plan on giving out many 5 star ratings, but this one definitely deserved one. Value, ambiance, and quality of food were all top notch.

On my maiden voyage to the House of Coates, I took the path less traveled and ordered the 10 ounce sirloin...and I was pleasantly surprised. While known for its burgers, the steak's not bad either. It was served on a hot plate and garnished with plump marble-sized mushrooms. Not a fan of sauces - I opted for a light application of salt only. I ordered medium and got medium, slightly pink in the middle. Although a sirloin, the meat was incredibly tender and flavorful. Well done House. A cozy, quiet atmosphere, friendly service, and a Fat Tire made for a memorable evening.

I too went for the burgers and they were very good, very homey atmosphere, very limited seating. It is exactly what you expect from a middle of nowhere restaurant, but the burgers are pretty good. Pulltabs too.

Stopped by last week around lunchtime. The place is getting better known for it's burgers. They are good and at a fair price. Smaller bar with limited seating, bartender and wait staff attentive.
