I've never been one for negative reviews, however the experience we had at Max's Grill tonight was so disappointing that I felt it would be prudent to share. I've been to Max's in the past and had an okay-at-best meal- I mean you really can't expect much from a Sisco foods type of restaurant so the bar is never all that high anyway- but it's usually a good place to go if you want a giant serving of over-salted food. It is worth mentioning that the restaurant was MAYBE half full of customers. My main complaint is with our waitress, Laurie. She was rude, short, hard of hearing, and not knowledgable whatsoever about the menu. When we asked what beers were on tap we were met with a curt "well we have 15 of them." There was no beer list anywhere to be found. Or maybe there was, but she was too busy being annoyed over our request to make our bill more expensive to bother pointing it out. We ended up having to guess at what we might want until she heard one she recognized. Then, when we placed our order she had no idea what the side vegetables were. My elderly grandmother was met with a rude "I don't know, it's a medley." when she had the audacity to ask such a question. Sorry for wasting your time with our annoying requests, Laurie. On to the food, namely the "salad". They really shouldn't be allowed to call it a salad. It's a heap of lettuce paired with 1/4 cup of whatever dressing you choose. No other veggies, no croutons, and no cheese-- however it did come garnished with some previously frozen carrot sprinkles, so there's that. Once again, the bar is already low for this kind of restaurant, but they shot way below it. Moving on to the food, the reason for the second star. No real complaints on that front. I had the salmon pasta, which was, well, it was interesting. The salmon was good, the pasta was good, but they were not good together. Luckily they serve the entire salmon filet on top of the heap of pasta so I was able to easily separate the two. Others in my group had a sandwich, ribs, and shrimp. No complaints there. Finally, dessert. The apple pie is not as pictured, and our waitress forgot to include the ice cream. Whatever, after the rest of our experiences with her, this was not surprising. The other half of our table had the cheesecake, which they said was passable. Overall, this was very underwhelming and we will not be returning any time soon, because there's only so much one should have to endure in the interest of supporting local businesses.

Stopped for a late lunch. Taco salad was inedible because it had way too much salt in the meat sauce. The server did an excellent job on service recovery and offered a different meal. I didn't have time. She did not charge for the meal. Great service...Food - not good.

Wonderful food. Well prepared and presented. The Iowa Pork Chop was amazing. The portion sizes were perfect. The wait staff bent over backwards to help out and make our visit welcoming and wonderful. I sincerely recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for a great meal.

Fantastic restaurant. Great managers and great customer service overall. Upscale service in a small town with a diverse menu and a some menu favorites that I LOVE. Thankful to have Max's Grill in Olivia for drinks, dinner with the family, and meetings.

Yep, it's a classed-up sport's bar attached to a hotel in the middle of the prairie serving some very good American bar food. Dining choices in Olivia are sparse and even in near by Redwood Falls, most restaurants are chains - and I refuse to eat at Apple-bees or TGI Friday's - sorry. Max's Grill was a great surprise. Our server, Julia, was very friendly and had a great sense of humor. She took quick care of us, mixing and serving us a couple of great Bloody Mary's. The menu is fairly typical bar type food. I had a buffalo chicken wrap, my wife the buffalo chicken salad. My son did a pizza and my young daughter went with mac and cheese. No, nothing wild or inspired, however all of it was great. The only thing on the menu that stood out as being unique was a Turkey Asparagus Melt, however the flavor of buffalo and blue cheese was calling, so I went with that. I'll be back and try the turkey sammich some day. So, high quality food and great drinks are good for a few stars. Excellent service gets Max's one more. The fifth star is because of the value. We all got stuffed, and the adults each had two pint-sized bloody's with chasers, and our bill was $41. In the Twin Cities, we would easily be in $60-$70 territory for the same thing. If you ever find yourself way out in south-west Minnesota (we were camping), Max's is worth a visit.

Pretty good lunch spot on the road! Cobb salad was pretty good. Nice people and you can tell it is a fun hangout in the evenings.

I always make a point to stop by Max's whenever I'm in Olivia. Can always count on the food and service being great.

We had the best 'special of the day' - hot roast beef with provolone cheese sandwich yesterday. We stopped there a few years ago and had the best burgers. We give it five stars!!
