Hands down the best pizza sauce and toppings I've ever had on a pizza. The smell when you walk in the door is intoxicating! Yum!!!! We will definitely be making a return visit.

Yum Yum Yum, a thousand times, Yum. Such a better option than the other pizza places in town! I love the sweet family that runs this place, and the pizza is always the BEST. The ingredients are always fresh, they don't take TOO long, and you never regret going! Only downside: the restaurant portion is so tiny and always busy. If you're not doing delivery or take-out, plan on waiting for a table and feeling crowded. BONUS: It's called the Gyro Pizza. Shut up ad order it.

So, the food is good, the portions are generous, and the food prices are reasonable. However, beware if you decide to order a glass of wine! I was shocked to learn that a glass of wine is $8. (There are no prices on the wine card.) Even though the food is good, I will not be returning, because I feel betrayed. $8 for a glass of wine in a family pizza place seems high!

As good as thin crust gets in Northfield (or anywhere else I guess). It seems that if the late-night scene in Northfield is some sort of constellation, than Basil's pizza could be considered Orion's Belt. None of the bars stay open late enough, but you can guarantee, that once you settle up your tab, thoughts will turn to that damn gyro pizza. I feel very, very bad for my friends who are vegetarians when we go here. I become indigent to the point of foaming at the mouth should they sully even half of my gyro pizza with their vegetables *gag*. And don't forget the tzatziki sauce. This is crucial in your Basil's gyro pizza experience. Order at least two containers for a large. This stuff ties the room together, so to speak. So there you are, on the late night, hanging with all of your drunken cronies, inhaling pizza at a breakneck pace. What, I ask you, keeps this from degenerating into bedlam, sheer madness? I'll tell you. The matronly Greek owner lives upstairs. I can only imagine what her nights are like. Around eleven, or whenever her floorboards begin to rattle, she knows it's time to bail out her deer-in-the-headlights staff. The second she walks in, the riff-raff straighten up. No one wants to alienate themselves from this thin crust euphoria. So clean your act up drunken tavern patron, you're in big momma's house now.

When I went to Carleton, we used to always order the gyros pizza from Basil's. It was so delicious. Now that I live in Chicago, there are no places that serve gyro pizza. So sad.

Gyros pizza. Gyros pizza gyros pizza gyros pizza. With tzatziki. This place was a staple of my college days but it absolutely holds up. The quality is undiminished lo these 25 years. If square pizza is your thing, this is the center of the world.

Thank goodness for Basil's pizza. My friends and I were starving for some delicious pizza after a late night of poker. Basil's was the perfect match for our craving!

I'm not even done eating and had to write the review! I'm here on business and looked up area places on Yelp. Basil's looked good, but had not had a recent review so I was a little apprehensive, but am SO glad I went with it. Garlic Cheesebread with Sauce - the bread was good, the sauce was outstanding! It was a true homemade meat sauce. I'm so used to getting generic red sauce, this was such a tasty surprise. Meat Pizza (no salmi) - thin crust and homemade ingredients - fresh sausage, fresh cooked hamburger, and crispy, sliced bacon! I don't like a lot of sauce on my pizza so the combination of crust, sauce, and toppings was perfect for me. I'm actually sad I'm full because I want to keep eating this awesomeness!! Nicely done, Basil's!

Wow, it's the same as when Bill was still alive 40 years ago. The owner, Theologia is there every night. You have to like the cracker crust. Summit on tap, good pizza and good prices with a smile!

Don't get me wrong...basils has the best pizza I have ever eaten in my whole life..but their service is absolutely terrible..90% of the time when we order for delivery they forget something like the bread or the taziki sauce..but we love it so much that we have to get it..but it's ridiculous how much they f up our order..

The good: Delicious pizza. They deliver. Nothing more needs to be said. The bad: Had to stay at Archer House to discover this rad pizza joint.

  • Dustin M.

The pizza here is a bit like Broadway Pizza (big pizza cut into squares), which is a style I used to not like, but Basil's does it well, a bit step above Broadway Pizza. Best pizza in Northfield, and probably the best place to eat in Northfield.

    (5)
  • Kadee M.

I would pass on a Wednesday night wood fired pizza anytime for the "Athens special" all I can say is WOW!

  • Sabrina E.

I can safely say that this place contributed to my freshman 15 back in my college days. For four wonderful years I would order their Gyro pizza with the extra size of tzatziki sauce. Each piece was cut into little squares perfect for dunking. The pizza is on a cracker thin crust, which is my favorite and the gryo meat is the real stuff off the rotisserie, not that fake thin stuff that you buy frozen at grocery stores. It's funny that people mention the similarity between Basil's and George's Vineyard's pizza. The story heard around town is that the owners of Basil's, George's Vineyard and B&L's are from the same family. There were some irreconcilable differences and each family member decided to start their own pizza place. After leaving Northfield I struggled to find a Gyro pizza that comes close to Basils. I never found it, which is why my husband and I make annual trips to Northfield for that delicious pie!

Good pizza, huge portions, cheap prices. They serve their round pies cut into small square slices -- I'm big on sampling, so this is much better than having to commit to a huge wedge slices! They are open late, which is great given most of northfield sleeps at 5:30. They save us by being open til 1am on mother's day! They allow you to halve a pizza and have it two difference styles. The 6 us shared 2 XL pizzas (4 styles) and a dinner Greek salad and there was plenty to take home. Came out to be under $10/person. I'd stick to the specialty pizzas. We ordered: --Athen's Special (gyro, tomato, mushroom, onion). Delicious. Gyro is cut thick and surprisingly great as a topping. --Hawaiian -- wouldn't order again. canned pineapple, lunch meat ham. --Greek Popeye (spinach, feta, bacon) -- very good. Lots of all three ingredients. We didn't order garlic bread but watching them make it in the kitchen -- it sure looked good! Only complaint: Strange vents blow up your shorts and make the place pretty chilly. Bring a coat.

  • Cat H.

Let me preface this by saying that I have not had any 'traditional' types of pizza from Basil's (pepperoni, sausage, Hawaiian, etc.). What I HAVE had are their Greek-style pizzas. Which makes sense, as they are a Greek-style Pizzeria. So if you get food here, I recommend getting what they specialize in. For vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike, the Olympus pizza with tzatziki sauce is mind blowing. I don't even remember everything on it, but it's something like spinach, feta, tomatoes, black olives, etc. and dipped in that cucumber sauce it's to die for. In my opinion, as much as I adore Olympus, their creme de la creme is their Gyro pizza. This is pizza with pieces of sliced gyro meat on it, served with cucumber tzatziki sauce, and it is the food of gods. I am really distressed about what I will do when I leave Minnesota and this food is no longer accessible to me!!!!

AWESOME pizza. I don't get down to Northfield often, but when I do I always hit up Basil's.

  • Jonathan K.

Visited a friend living in Northfield for the summer and was pleasantly surprised to have phenomenal pizza delivered to the door. The Gyro Pizza was really great, a unique and surprisingly delicious combo. Great thin-crust bread with lamb and a thick layer of cheese. I highly recommend getting extra tzatziki like some of the other reviewers, as it made the pizza taste amazing. Cheap too, a large Gyro Pizza delivered cost around $12 (it was enough to feed 3).

I would not say Basil's is perfection, but the pizza remains near and dear to me even 5 years after leaving Northfield. Hard to write about the pizza that served so many different occasions - fuel for late night paper writing, late-night drunken craving, late-night sober craving, all-purpose comfort food especially during finals, morning-after fix, a welcome break from the dining halls - so many times, Basil's had the calming effect of a valium. My favorite pizza was the gyro pizza, of which I ordered dozens during my time at Carleton. It's exactly what it sounds like, a thin crust pizza topped with slices of lamb meat, spices and cheese, to be dipped in tzatsiki sauce. The tzatsiki, especially, cut the heaviness of the lamb and cheese; many times I just ate the pizza to for the tzatsiki sauce. An odd, but great pizza that I have yet to see replicated anywhere else. It was by no means the perfect pizza, but nobody ever seemed to care, least of all me. Recently went back to Northfield for a weekend in June and found myself falling back easily into the old habit of dialing Basil's at midnight. Love this place and hope all of you enjoy it as much as many of us transplants did during our time in Northfield.

By far the best pizza in Northfield. Certainly the tastiest way to satisfy your hunger no matter why you're hungry for pizza. It's only a shame that they always seem to close up too early, even though it's not that early, but for most college kids it certainly is. If it's open, then you have no reason to not stop by or pick up the phone for Basil's. And of course the gyro pizza is divine, don't even think about it, just order it.

    (5)
  • Peter H.

My favorite pizza. I go for the sausage + onion, but anything with gyros meat is tasty as well.

    (5)
  • Rebekah W.

We just got a carry out from Basil's one evening. The pizza was good, but I didn't feel like it was anything extra special. It is no better than George's Vineyard pizza and costs twice as much. In fact, I actually prefer a Little Cesar's $5 Hot and Ready pizza over Basil's any day. Not that it tastes that much better, but at least there is a balance between taste and cost. The interior of the building was also must less...uh...nice? than I expected reading the reviews on here. It smelled like grease which I find to be gross. Moral of the story, I probably won't be back.

There is no doubt that my love of Basil's is colored by (too) many debaucherous nights in college, but ten years after graduating, I confirmed at my recent reunion that Basil's (and the late lamented Bill's) pizza is as delicious as I remember, even without a 2 AM buzz to make it taste extra good. I've lived in two of the country's pizza capitals-- Chicago and New York-- and Basil's gyro pizza (with or without garlic ,but ALWAYS with extra tzatziki sauce) still stands as one of my all-time favorites. If only they delivered to the East Coast, they would be perfect!

Best Pizza in town. They won the tallest Hobbit contest. Its pretty good, greek style, but over priced for its quality and location. I can see why people don't bother to splurge and go for Dominoes instead. Not that I do this.

  • Chris T.

I'm an ole alum, and this was definitely some of the best pizza in town, and some truly excellent pizza when compared to larger towns as well. A place I would hope to eat at on a return visit to Northfield.

Whether you're starved or drunk, this is the place to get pizza in Northfield. I subsisted on the gyro pizza many a semester at Olaf. The old Greek lady who, I think, runs the place is wonderful. We endearingly called her Strega Nona. Also, they're open late (2), so when you get the munchies, it sure beats the overpriced greased cardboard from Domino's. Bonus points for embracing the hole-in-the-wall aesthetic. No kitsch, no gimmick - Basil's is the real deal.

One of the best pizza's in Northfield. If its 1:30am and you are craving pizza, the delivery is the quickest and best in town. The Gyro with a side of taziki is one of most tasty dishes they carry.

  • Anthony R.

Great family owned restaurant. Try the gyro pizza, just wonderful (surprised more pizza restaurants have not figured out this combo).

    (5)
  • Marcelino P.

The best pizza I've had! Its straight out of Greek and the owner's are very good people. Get the Gyro pizza and trust me YOU WILL GO BACK! You should try all of their pizza pies as well. Delicious, delicious, delicious!!!

I'm not a huge fan of the thin-crust style of pizza that you usually get in Minnesota. But go to Basil's and try their gyro pizza. It's amazing.

  • Sta t.

Very good portions, in fact, I wish there were smaller portion options seeing as how I didn't need to eat a whole pizza (even a small) by myself. The greek salad was very tasty and consisted of lettuce, tomato, feta, olives, and a light dressing and some herbs sprinkled on top. I went with the Olympus pizza based on recommendations I saw on here. They did not skimp on the cheese. I thought it was good, not life-changing, and I wish I had tried the gyro pizza.. Perhaps it would have been nirvana if I had paired it with the tzatziki sauce. I'll be going back again soon, and next time I'll try the gyro.

Got the Athens pizza on superbowl Sunday. The pizza was not cooked enough. The crusty was doughy. Too much cheese and very greasy. Paid over $30 and ended up tossing 75% in the garbage. After eating one piece, me, my wife and my son all were disgusted by it and couldnt stomach any more. Was a complete waste of money. You would think a pizza joint would know how to properly cook a pizza. We will never buy from here again.

  • Mark W.

Like everyone said, the gyro pizza is the way to go. The sauce is terrific, this is the best food I had in Northfield. One thing, it does make you really thirsty!

    (5)
  • Dave A.

For all the hype and good reviews left by others I expected much better. We ordered an XL Basil's House Special and it was okay, but not great. My wife likes thin crust so that's what we ordered, and it was bland. The sauce likewise lacked flavor. I'm not sure what we paid for it since my wife paid the bill, but I've had better pizza at chains like Pizza Hut and Dominoes.

  • Paul T.

Right off the top, I'm biased. I did my undergrad at St. Olaf, and so Basil's is a sentimental favorite for me. Most of their pizzas are good-not-great, but the gyro pizza is my favorite pizza ever. It's absolutely delicious, and if you get it you cannot skip the tzatziki sauce., it's essential. I remember the exact day that I first had a slice, and it changed my life forever. From what I hear they make good gyros too, but I can't imagine ever getting anything but the pizza.

My family has been eating here since my mother was young and still continue to eat here. Four generations of my family coverge upon this slice of heaven and mob the available tables. My condolences to anyone that tries to get seating while my family masses are here. We have even had a wedding rehearsal here. We live 45 minutes away and can't find anything like it close to home. It's well worth the drive. We particularly favor the basil's special, Roma, or House. The service is excellent. If you have any concerns, they cater to your needs. The same family has run this restaurant for years. They have kind of become my pizza family away from home. The family matriarch busily marches around making sure everything is in order and whipping things back into shape if things go awry. The family patriarch is often found sitting in the first booth quietly enjoying his business' success. We always go up to him and thank him for the great time we have when we're here. Seating can be a problem during peak hours so come early or order out if you live near by. Or just have them half-bake the pizza, bring home, and bake the rest yourself. Don't tell them, but I would pay more just to get the pizza! it's soooo worth it.

This is an excellent pizza place for everyone that loves the thin crust pizza. Seeing as I am not a thin crust pizza fan, that says alot! There is also a Basil's in Faribault as well, they have a special buffet style that is worth the trip!

I went to college in Northfield and Basil's Pizza is mouth watering good. Try an XL Pineapple with Feta cheese pizza. Since discovering this topping combination I order it whenever a pizza place has feta as a topping (also awesome w/ jalapeno too), but alas it is NEVER as good as it was at Basil's...sigh.... Hands down the best pizza in Northfield. The sauce was always fresh and almost buttery, crust light and crispy and I loved being able to make pizza sandwiches out of the center pieces... nom nom nom.

My favorite pizza. I go for the sausage + onion, but anything with gyros meat is tasty as well.

Like everyone said, the gyro pizza is the way to go. The sauce is terrific, this is the best food I had in Northfield. One thing, it does make you really thirsty!
