One of the better restaurants in Lanesboro with a pretty wide selection of food and very adequate service. We had dinner there, including Bruschetta, A Riverside burger, house salad and a cup of soup. All quite good, and for the low low price of $24, total, before tip.

On a whim we decided to go to Lanesboro today and go to the theater and ride the trails. Both of these were awesome but unfortunately, created quite the appetite. Despite the 25 minute wait projected, we decided to commit to eating at Riverside. If you've never been to Riverside, it is a beautiful location with great outdoor seating both in a covered section with river views and on a concrete patio which is generally shaded at each table and has nice gentle breeze most days. The location is great as it is easy to walk to and from the main part of lanesboro and especially for people like us who are renting bikes and such as it is close by. There is nearby on street parking and a parking lot that is within walking distance. You can certainly ride your bikes to he restaurant as well. The menu promises a variety of dining options including appetizers such as baked brie alongside mexican style nachos, entrees as varied as prime rib to pasta to sandwiches, and a few select desserts. Okay, now thats the background stuff, lets get back to the details of today's visit.... We had a great server by the name of Curt (I think that was his name). He was kind, prompt, and attentive to every detail we through at him. He kept an eye on the glasses at the table, checked on whether the brie was pasteurized (my wife is pregnant...we wont get into the importance of this here, but suffice it to say we needed to ask), and other odds and ends. He was perfect and if I could review him individually, he would receive five stars. Now, the main reason we went to the root...the food. Well, my wife ordered Prime Rib medium, but it was well done upon arrival. The pastas that my sister and I both ordered were overcooked and the pesto was generally flavorless. The garlic bread I received was great and the brie was quite tasty my sister said, but overall the entrees fell flat. We ate them certainly as we were hungry, but it was overall quite disappointing. If not for the amazing service and great atmosphere we probably would have rated the experience around 1-2 stars....

Nice friendly restaurant on the trail head and overlooking ('tween the trees) the Root River. There's a nice outdoor patio plus a covered porch on the first floor. Second floor has a small bar with a few tables and two narrow porches -- one overlooks the main street and the other has the same view as the first floor porch. Great place to kick back with a decent wine list and 4-5 beers on draft plus other bottled beers. (The Schell's Heffeweisen tasted especially good after each day's rides while sitting on the porch overlooking the street and our hotel across the way) Food was good and well-prepared. The first night we had pork tenderloin and second night we shared a Hawaiian pizza. Service both nights was pretty good and they had only three servers the second night. I've read a few reviews elsewhere and some complaints about the food, service and "pours" of wine. Based on our two nights there, I can't agree with the criticisms ... our experiences were great. Maybe part of the difference is expectations. We've been to Lanesboro before and it's on a slower "clock" than other similar towns such as Stillwater (MN) or Ephraim (WI). It's a bit more laid back and most of the visitors seem to like it that way. However, we did see a few groups or couples who seemed to have expectations that would be better met at Stillwater. We like both places -- but especially liked our stay in Lanesboro as we wanted a much more comfortable and casual time for our short get-away.

Had a nice dinner at Riverside. I had the pork tenderloin and Bill had the creamy pesto pasta. Server was great and wine was good. Overall a good experience!

Hit the trail system when we got into town. Ready for a nice cold beer at the end of the day and stopped here. Great live music on the patio while we relaxed. Didn't have any food but the place was packed and the burgers looked good.

Stopped at the beginning and the end of our ride. First for lunch - very good. Then for a drink. Great location and service. Perfect outdoor dining spit.

We've been told this restaurant is fantastic. Never got to find out. Ordered drinks at 3 pm one quiet afternoon in the restaurant. Waited fifteen minutes; watched our waitress clear tables and never return with our drinks. Decided to leave. Talked to another person on our way out who was also waiting for service. I'm giving two stars because a manager who was not on duty passed us on his way in as we were on our way out. He asked about our experience. After telling him our story he promised to speak with the staff on duty. Appreciated that.

Good food and friendly staff! The pizza was great and so was the Reuben sandwich. Our waitress was very sweet and attentive!

Stopped after reading a few reviews. Didn't know what to expect. Had the Ruben was GREAT. My husband had mushroom Swiss burger done perfectly. Once we got a menu the service was fast. Will definitely stop again when in the area.

Great location, good service, lots of menu options. Had the turkey burger with baked bean side. Love having a non-French fry option that is healthy. Super delicious. Great patio.

Had a very nice meal here after a day of biking. Great location, nice ambiance, pleasant and attentive service with tasty food at a reasonable price. Had the prime rib with baked potato. Not "omg, the best I've ever had", but certainly good ... Serviceable. Would not hesitate to return

The pickle burger is absolutely amazing. Definitely try to sit on the side porch with a view of the river. My only suggestion is more beers on tap.

We left feeling underwhelmed, but not completely disappointed. This place claims to have been voted best patio in SE Minnesota, so we had high expectations. The patio....eh. At best. We started with bruschetta, which wasn't great, so our expectations were immediately lowered. The entrees, however, were pleasant. I mean, if you can describe food as pleasant. The primed rib was excellent, tender and flavorful - a bit small for a king cut. The salmon was great. The wild rice was extremely overcooked & under-seasoned. The corn on the cob was...as good as boiled corn can be... We left still hungry, and underwhelmed.

Went to Lanesboro for a getaway with my hubby. Damion our waiter and was amazingly delightful. So fun having someone really care about their customers. My hubby loved the local brew that Riverside makes themselves. The wine was yummy too. Had prime rib and it was tender and super flavorful. Thanks for the live entertainment. It was a delight being outside and enjoying good food, music and atmosphere.

As time goes by. Wednesday Aug., 6, 2014 Arrived in Lovely Little Lanesboro, MN after some problems with Mapquests directions and unexpected detours. After settling into the B&B - 'the girl of my dreams' - and I decided a nice relaxing dinner and a couple glasses of wine would be the perfect end to a harrowing day on the road. A walk down the street and through the Lanesboro City Park brought us to the Riverside On the Root restaurant. A small crowd was gathered at the entrance and we heard country music coming from somewhere in back of the outside patio. Deciding to go no further, this seemed to be the right place for an evening of relaxation and a light dinner. We were guided upstairs to a corner table overlooking the Root River with a great view. A cute red squirrel was scampering across the lower roof and begging for food from the customers. We (each) ordered a glass of white wine and a salad with grilled chicken. Easy enough and acceptable enough. (Not terrible.) (Umm.. 2*stars.) On our way out the music was still playing so we started to dance the "Texas 10 Step" down the upstairs walkway. What a Hoot!! My observation would be - if you are in Lanesboro, and happen to find yourself hungry - this will fill the tummy but not much else. I notice there are several 1* reviews. Maybe there is another Riverside on the Root but, I doubt it. I reserve the 1* for truly bad food or terrible service. I did not find this to be the case here.

What a beautiful location for a restaurant. What an AMAZING patio right on the river with beautiful views! This restaurant was perfect in every single way, well right up until we actually tried to get a table. My partner and I were on a biking trip with family and Lanesboro is the place to be in MN. He also happens to have 5 siblings under the age of 10 that were all with us. When we originally showed up there were already family members seated on the patio waiting for us, but the woman working that area was extremely rude about getting us seated in there even though there was an abundance of seats. Once seated we were approached on several occasions by this same woman, who was NOT our server, to let us know that the children were being too loud, they needed to stay seated (which other than moving amongst our families tables they were seated at their own, and that we were causing other patrons distress while they were trying to enjoy their own meals. I was ready to ask for the manager to complain about her poor attitude, her rudeness, and in general the fact that she was attempting to discipline the children that weren't even being naughty. We were the only people seated in the covered patio area, and all of the other people that did make their way through all wanted to smile and play with the baby, or play with the little kids, so really it was just this ONE rude woman that decided that she didn't like our kids. Our actual server was fantastic. She was friendly, congenial, very quick, and very helpful as the menu changes there quite frequently. I had the lamb burger which was phenomenal and I can't remember what burger my partner got, but we both agreed that it was amazingly delicious. All of the kids loved the pizza they hand made, and the other tables seemed to really be enjoying their food as well. We cleared those plates and even tried to have dessert, though with biking some of us decided against that. Had it not been for the horrible experience we had with the one woman who works here (whom I honestly hope does't work there the next time we decide to head that way) I would have given this review a full 5-stars. But if her horrible service and attitude are representative of this otherwise phenomenal restaurant, I will never go back.

I've never written a review before but this was just awful service. Started out by waiting 45 minutes for a table. In that time, the group I was with decided to go upstairs to the bar/balcony area. I wanted a Bloody Mary, but was told they were out of mix (keep in mind it was a Saturday during Buffalo Bill Days, their local town festival. I think they could have been more prepared). 30 minutes into our wait for a table, I returned to the hostess stand to ask if we could just sit at a table in the bar area and order food. The hostess told me that would be just fine. I went back upstairs to tell my group we would just sit in the bar. As we started settling in at the table, the bartender said to us, "just so you know, if you sit here to eat you'll probably get really bad service. We've got a lot going on". UMMMM, WHAT??? Why would you say that to someone? Maybe you need more staff for your busiest weekend of the year?? I returned again to the hostess stand and she had a table outside she could seat us at shortly. So we waited several more minutes for that table. Once we were FINALLY seated, we looked through the menu for a good 10 minutes and no one had even come to greet us and take a drink order yet. We were so frustrated at this point that our group left. Maybe the service is better when it's not so busy, but I'm not taking any chances. I will not be back to try this place.
