An interesting breakfast place. To me it appears to be a bakery that also makes breakfast and lunch. They do not appear to have a breakfast menu. The server asked what we would like for breakfast. The food arrived in good time and was nicely prepared. I had French toast made with multigrain bread. The bacon was the meatiness we had ever seen. The bill for two breakfast with coffee was under $13. If you expect Perkins type place, you will be disappointed.

This is one of the main breakfast joints in town. It was obviously the "coffee 'n' conversation/gossip" place for those who don't fit the persona found at the "Chat 'n' Chew" down the street. The pecan roll I ordered tasted somewhat old/hard and the coffee was watery, but if I lived in Lanesboro, I could envision this as a common spot for me to find myself in during the morning hours. The other thing that I liked (but many might not) was the unpredictability about the place. The menu was different every day (depending on what he had or what he felt like) and the hours of the place were also different. Sometimes he wouldn't come in to open the place (it was in January, so it wasn't high season for customers) and closes whenever it seems like most everyone is done for the day. This type of approach is refreshing in a time of everything needing to be written down and set in stone, regarding schedules, menus, etc.

I love the Pastry Shoppe. The food here is great. The atmosphere may not be the best, but the food definitely makes up for it!

I had to try this out based on other reviews (some not on Yelp), so we did so today. First, we were assaulted with poorly kept premises (seemed dirty with lots of flies) + an "I just don't care how my pastries are presented" display case in what is supposed to be THE pastry shoppe. It really had a greasy spoon atmosphere, not a bustling European baked goods place I had imagined from the exterior store front. Their pastries looked downtrodden. I will say that the staff was very nice and accommodating. I had the biscuits and gravy (made with real bits of sausage) with an over easy egg on top and hubby had the spinach/sausage/onion quiche. Both were relatively tasty, but my biscuit was slightly sweet. Hmmm not what I expected or liked. Also, the presentation did not make it look overly appetizing. Unfortunately, mine was a real gut bomb as well. After about 15 minutes, I started to feel awful. But considering the price, the value was relatively worth what you got. What did I expect anyway right?

The food was actually very good, but the atmosphere and service really detracted from the overall experience. I tried this place because my fave place in town for lunch (Riverside on the Root--elk burger -- yum!) was closed. I ordered a gyro and bowl of tomato soup. The lamb was nicely cooked, the dill sauce was very tasty...the pita was nice and soft but was dusted heavily in flour that got all over my black biking shorts. The pita would have been very nice sans the extra flour, perhaps browned and warmed on the grill. They didn't have any onions, which is a must in gyros, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The tomato soup looked kind of thin, but the taste was rich and robust. I enjoyed the food, but as the other reviewer noted...the atmosphere is lacking. The waitress was not particular friendly or attentive. I had to ask for water even though I was only the 3rd person in the restaurant and had obviously been out biking. She would also shout back to the kitchen...when the swinging doors wouldn't close you could see and hear all of the noise from the kitchen. The place started to get busy with people stopping by for orders out, and with locals stopping by. Again, I liked the food but found the overall experience could be improved.

Great pastry, good breakfast. But they get all the stars as they offer the only free open wireless connection in Lanesboro, outside of the library. I was able to run my business while on vacation thanks to these peeps. I am grateful. Really good toast, too.
