Antler Inn

I stayed at the Antler Inn for 1 night and that this place exceeded my expectations for a guest house. I was expecting something similar to a hostel. However, Antler Inn is an actual house, and staying here feels more like living here. Diane, the property owner/manager makes you feel right a home by making sure that you have a great time in the area. She provided us with many brochures on local events and attractions. The house itself has multiple bedrooms. Each room has its own unique décor. There are also three bathrooms, a kitchen, dining room, and living room. I stayed here in the winter (slow time) but I still enjoyed it nonetheless. The place is spotless and so cozy. I will definitely be staying here the next time that I am in the area.

Heston's Lodge is a family-owned lodge on the south side of Gunflint Lake. Several cabins in the woods, beautiful views of the lake and an authentic "rustic" experience! The family is amazing, even hosting a "pizza night" during the summers for all of their guests. The pizza is legendary in the community, they even make their own dough and cook it in a home-made outdoor pizza oven. The lodge has boats for rent as well. Heston's Lodge is a great place to stay in summer or winter. My family has been renting cabins from them for many years now.

We stayed for two nights in the Towering Pines cabin and absolutely loveqd it. Clean, spacious, awesome fireplace, right on Poplar Lake. Wonderful people running the show, and Charlie the lab fetching his tennis ball. We will without a doubt go back.

Sydney’s Frozen Custard

Approved. The fella and I came here on our Up North trip recently and Sydney's was a favorite stop of mine. It's right on Lake Superior, so it feels like a coastal beach shack. We ended up sitting on the beach on some patio chairs, but there's a rooftop too! They serve frozen custard and brick-oven pizza at a fraction of the prices you'll see at nearby restaurants. I actually sort of regret not eating pizza here instead of Sven & Ole's, because the ingredients sounded a million times more tasty and fresh. They also serve some Mediterranean stuff like salads and gyros. We were here for a cold one though... a cold cup of custard. As we looked at the menu, at first my heart was sinking because I thought the only options were chocolate and vanilla. Then I saw that they do their own blizzards!!! WHAT. I ordered the Mocha Heath blended frozen custard and never looked at a DQ again.** **Probably not true.
We enjoyed awesome custard after eating horrible Scandinavian pizza at another joint. The custard was awesome. We all wish we had tried the wood fired pizza at Sydney's. Also, the rooftop seating has a spectacular view of Lake Superior looking north.
I liked what this place had to offer. I just didn't like how they charge an extra 50¢ to use a card when they charge 6$ for a sundae. Looked like it had a lot of other tasty things though. I will say that if you go during the summer, you can go right behind the bar/ restaurant and go on the roof or straight to the pebble beach behind the restaurant. That made it all really nice. Just to be able to relax. So good location! Even though it's down at the end of a less traveled street.

Get there early in the morning because THEY WILL SELL OUT. Do yourself a favor and get a Skizzle. It's a Norwegian scone and they are amazing. The skizzles are the shizzle!
Holy Donuts! I think I found my new church! Donuts don't get any better than this. Truly! Don't overlook the raspberry filled jelly and banana cream filled donuts. So, maybe I spent a little more time there than most people do, but I really love donuts. [apologies to my wife] In the time I spent there, they just kept bringing out fresh trays of donuts! It was frickin' 3:30 in the afternoon! We didn't eat a single donut that wasn't still warm. I would like to say there's a possibility of debating if these are the World's Best Donuts. I really would. I CAN'T! I pledge my loyalty. 5 1/2 hours from home; I would road trip to Grand Marais just for the World's Best Donuts. Holy Donuts! I love you!
Why are you even reading this review?!? Doesn't the name tell you all you need to know?! Trust me - the name does not lie - TRULY the WORLD'S best donuts. I know everyone has a pref of cake or raised, but let me tell you - you MUST MUST MUST try a cake cinnamon sugar donut and tell me that you're not impressed? Actually, all their cake donuts are amazing. I usually prefer raise glazed, but WBD is the only place I opt for a cake donut. If you're in GM often, write you're name on the board and remember your number for the following summer - you can get a free donut if you tell them your number from the year before! Enjoy!

I've been hearing about this place for a couple of years, just never get there. Well met a friend and we both had great dinners. The fried herring was just like Mom used to make. Thanks!
This place was a surprise. After walking into the Gunflint Tavern and being told the wait for 2 would be 30 mins (even though there were open tables), we decided to walk down the street a bit and into the Crooked Spoon. I'm glad we did. We had the port wine and goat cheese fondue as a starter, then I had the hanger steak, and my girlfriend had the pork tenderloin. All of it was fantastic. My girlfriend doesn't even eat pork that often and loved her dinner. Service was very attentive as well. With the limited dining options in Grand Marais, this should be the top of your list.
One of the greatest lunches I've ever had. Unbelievable food, wonderful atmosphere, fantastic service. Recommended for fans of GREATEST LUNCHES EVER!

Spectacular! Food and service was amazing. So much so that we went 3 times in 4 days. Twice for lunch and once for dinner. For those of you looking for a dinner and waiting in line at the angry trout. Cross the street! So worth it! !
The woman who served us was really nice. We had dinner on the outside patio and we really enjoyed it! I had a sort of energy/pressure loss, so I wanted some red meat to re-energize me, and I took the ribs...really, really good! I'm not a huge meat fan, but I really liked them. My husband took a special daily meal, I think, and he enjoyed it as well. If you are visiting Grand Marais, try this place!
I had the Paella for my entree and it was fantastic. We shared the garlic mussels and frog legs appetizers and they were spectacular. Great local beer selection and a very pretty view. Highly recommend!

The Pie Place Cafe

Given the name, I probably should have ordered pie. I went there for breakfast and left wishing I had saved those calories for donuts instead, which I then walked down the street and ate anyhow. Service was fine, but the food wasn't very good. The pancakes were undercooked (gave me flashbacks to my middle school cafeteria), the eggs were overcooked, the maple sausage was probably made by jimmy dean and the rest was unremarkable.
We had lunch and breakfast during our last visit to Grand Marais. The food was excellent and the pie was wonderful. The service was friendly but rushed us while eating pie in a almost empty restaurant.
Came here for breakfast with the hubby. I had maple sausage, gouda, mushroom, and onion omelette with cranberry wild toast. Did not know what to expect about the toast but thought i'd try something I normally wouldn't try and boy am I glad I did! The cranberry wild rice toast was really good! The omelette was really good too, but you know it's one of those things that's pretty hard to mess up. The best part of the breakfast was their breakfast potatoes! It was thin strips of potatoe (think hash browns) that are mixed with sour cream and who knows what else! It well definitely make you go over your caloric intake for the day but so worth it! Hubby had sausage gravy and biscuits with breakfast potatoes and 2 eggs which looked really yummy too!

Fun decor and a huge menu. I ordered a calzone and it was great. Husband had a buffalo chicken sandwich that he said was just okay.
Not sure why this place is ranked so highly. OK, the decor is kitchy cute but the food is mediocre at best. Good service, however. Any place selling self-proclaimed 'killer onion rings' for $9 an order that aren't even close to being anything special doesn't cut it in my book.
Great, fast service, courteous staff and portions that match the prices. Our group of 8 people: 4 children and 4 adults felt nicely accommodated there. The juicy lucy with onions was great and the chicken breast on our salads nice and tender. If you have a group of sisters in your party they will take picture and place it on the website. Oh and I really enjoyed my mug of hot apple cider!
