Still my favorite ice cream in the Twin Cities! It's too bad these guys are in such a sucky location because Grandpa's is GREAT! If they were located in Uptown, people would be raving about them and flocking to their front doors. Unfortunately, they're in a crappy strip mall. Then again, at least I can find parking! I'm glad they're back open for the season. This time a tried the Mexican Hot Pepper Chocolate. It has a nice bite on the tail end! My daughter tried Resilient Spirit Swirl, commemorating the great Fridley tornado of 1965...a stupid name for the ice cream but the taste was great. And the container looked messy, like the aftermath of a tornado. I suggest adding some dead gummy bear bodies to add a little drama! We'll be back. -Daddy Maxx Retro

Very cute place. I would have taken pictures but we definitely ate too fast. I love that the flavors change periodically. The salty caramel was amazing and the horchata is surprisingly good! They even have a variety of sorbets. (Dairy free)

Grandpa's is 1 of 3 outstanding unique north metro ice cream options. Grandpa's is my favorite because they make their own ice cream, but all three are worth a visit. In fact, on a fine day one could bike to all three (13 miles total from Grandpa's in Fridley to Village Scoop in North Oaks to Cup and Cone in White Bear Lake). Grandpas is in a strip mall and somewhat hard to find. Don't give up. Lots of parking and well worth the time to get there. It's a small shop, but you'll want to stay because it feels like an old-fashioned ice cream shop, it's cozy, and the staff are nice. The ice cream is fantastic and they have a wide variety of flavors. It's not cheap, if you want cheap ice cream drive thru DQ. If you love ice cream, then you need to visit Grandpa's ice cream in Fridley. It's just off I694 and so very good.

The ice cream was pretty good! We came from the pool and I was horribly thirsty when we got there. We ordered a big brownie sundae to share and since i was so thirsty, I knew that soda wasn't going to do the trick. I told the cute cashier girl that I was very thirsty and that i wanted the biggest possible cup of ice-cold water as I could get. She rang up my selection (we had to pay more to use the credit card) and she brought me a dixie-cup sized ice water. She told me that was all they had but that she didn't mind re-filling it as much as possible. I ended up having to purchase a soda after all...and paying extra to use my card again...and yes, she did refill my water as many times as I asked her to. Yeah, kinda disappointed in my visit and I doubt we will return.

Super friendly and delicious Fridley ice cream shop. It's hard to notice from the street but well worth it if you want to seek it out. They have so many flavors, you'll go gaga! Their location isn't ideal but hey at least there's plenty of parking! Just remember they are only open from 2-8 PM.

Grandpa's Ice Cream is alright. You are able to choose which kind of ice cream you want for an ice cream sandwich. (AKA. Chocolate chip cookie and ice cream). But for the sundae's you cannot. Which was slightly disappointing because I was craving some warm brownie. Grandpa's Ice Cream is a quaint little shop that has some of your usual flavors of ice cream but also a variety of other "featured flavors" Aka flavors that are different than the various other different flavors at ice cream stores. The store has 8 chairs in total to sit in; which makes the store small but having a wide selection of flavors and different cones is highly enjoyable. They also have milk shakes; various floats and other types of ice cream related goodies. I had bought a small ice cream sandwich; which was plenty of ice cream. And a small cup of ice cream for my significant other. The total came out to around $11. Which is alright. I was happy with my ice cream and was fully satisfied by the end of it. Ice cream is creamy and smooth here but I wish the flavor that I had picked; S'mores. Had some more chucks of s'more or something in it. Chocolate...Graham cracker. Bottom Line: It was alright. Great if you're craving different ice cream but...still kind of expensive.

I love Grandpa's Ice Cream! The quality of the ice cream is on point. They have a wide range of delicious flavors to choose from so take your time and check out each one before you commit. If you have a hard time choosing you can get a sample to help decide. They offer cups and cones for any number of scoops in two different sizes which I appreciate. They also have a custom ice cream cookie and a sample bowl of small scoops in case you can't narrow it down to less than 3 scoops so go wild! What really made this a great experience though was the exceptional customer service. The staff serves up whatever your pleasure with a smile on the face and a spring in their step. The only thing that would make this place better would be a little investment in the decor. Otherwise I give Grandpa's an A+

They have a large selection of flavors for you to choose from & different sizes, as well as mini sizes so that you can try more. The 3 mini portions pretty much make up a whole regular ice cream scoop. The ice cream alone is very eye appealing but lacks some flavor. The flavors aren't bold. The location is tucked away in back in a strip mall but it's near the Moore Lake if you want to head over there with your ice cream. Great place to bring your kids if you're in the area, but it is a smaller store so it does get packed really quick.

Delicious home made ice cream with some great traditional flavors and some very creative flavors. Flavors change regularly so never know what your going to get.

Name of the place reminds me of Herbert the pedophilic old man from Family Guy. That aside, huge fan of the honey lavender and salted caramel flavors.

I went here because I seen this shop advertised on the explore MN website and all have to say is that I think you could get better ice cream at Dairy Queen. Grandpa's ice cream is expensive and to close to soft serve they sell at local drive troughs. Also, make sure if you have a purchase under $5 you bring cash because Grandpas will rip you off by making you buy more merchandise.

Kind of an unfair rating because I was there and they weren't :( Closed for the season at the peak of my sugar cravings...oh well, there's always summer...

I was excited to try grandpas after reading through the yelp reviews so I dragged mom out to Fridley one Sunday afternoon for an ice cream excursion. Upon waking in I was hopeful of having some great ice cream. The flavored were abundant and the colors were eye popping. Unfortunately the taste was lacking. I got a scoop of butterscotch and a scoop of birthday cake bonanza. Both were richly colored scoops that provided little pop to my taste buds. Probably more disappointing was my moms scoop of butter brickle, her personal fave. The ice cream tasted almost like gingery water with only on chunk of what I imagine is their interpretation of butter brickle. Plus three scoops of ice cream cost over $10. Service was good but I had higher hopes.

In the northern suburbs, I have a hard time finding ice cream. I can find "soft serve" all over the place. Culver's "custard" will do in a pinch. Cold Stone and their ilk have lots of toppings but I honestly hate the gelatinous texture of their "ice cream". This place has been on my radar since I saw Carly's review. seeing as it was 90 out the other day, we thought it would be a good time for ice cream. Off we went to Grandpa's. Its in a strip mall just N of Hwy 694 in Fridley. Its a small place, but they have several flavors (30 or so). They offer the standard variety on cones to hold them in. I picked Vonnie's Gizmo for its coffee and toffee flavors. Everyone in our group of 8 found something to like. The cones were well made - not sloppy or haphazard. The ice cream was smooth and creamy. I loved mine and the rest of the group was happy.. Prices were around $4/5 each for a single/double (with a waffle cone). They have a buy 8 - get one deal, so my next cone is free :) I no longer have to scream for ice cream now, I can just drive to Fridley.

Great ice cream in a strip mall north of 694 in Fridley. They have a ton of flavors- from Bacon to Blue Moon. I got Blue Moon and Marshmallow Ice Cream in a waffle cone. It was everything that I expected it to be- and I'll definitely be going back. It was great to find a place out here in the suburbs with the quality that you would normally need to go downtown for.

We recently discovered this place and glad that we did, with some caveats. They have a large, rotating, and interesting selection of flavors which is nice. They also have a buy 6 get 1 cone kind of card stamp deal which is really nice. I appreciate that they make their own ice cream and I actually really love the consistency of the ice cream here. The only downside to this place is that, while they do have very good flavor offerings here, all the interesting flavors are really, really mild. For example--cotton candy ice cream? Great, but expect a really mild flavor. Butterscotch ice cream? Great, but expect a really mild flavor. Sea salt caramel? Pistachio? You get the idea. The price point is also up there with the izzy's, sabastian joe's, for the same amount. It's not cheap.

Fantastic flavors and quality. Good service. Price fair for what you get. A lot of choices. Young servers could use some training in communication and customer service skill, yet, they were friendly. I was told some flavors were soft. I wondered why and asked. Some ice cream is softer than others not because of the mix... rather, because of the way the sun shines on the freezer. I would think the owners would have a solution. Place is worth visiting... more than once! :)

Went there with my mom and dad to celebrate Fathers' Day. It was wonderful! Their ice cream is absolutely delicious, rich and cold and creamy, more dense than most ice cream. The price of a two-scoop cone is a bit higher than you'd expect, but considering the amount of ice cream you get and how good it is, it's totally worth it. When we went there, they even had chocolate hazelnut ice cream, which is a favorite of my dad's, and they did a great job with it! (They offered Dad a free root beer float for Fathers' Day, but he ended up deciding he wanted the chocolate hazelnut ice cream instead!) I had dark cherry and spumoni, and both were lovely. They sell pints of ice cream to take home, and I took home a pint each of pistachio and caramel cashew, both of which I also tried and loved!

Ice cream is awesome here, and it's all made in the store. Lots of good flavors, just have to try it out at some point.

I had no idea that this sweet place here! Brought my kids (plus one extra) for the first time today on the recommendation of a neighbor and our family will MOST definitely be back!! I would probably never have noticed Grandpa's ... it is tucked in away in a nondescript kind of charmless strip mall. But this shop is cute, the staff is super friendly and the treats are on par with our favorites like Izzie's and Sebastian Joe's. We are thrilled to have found a nearby, convenient, family-owned place where we can get fabulous ice cream in great flavors (I got Sea Salt Almond today, but was tempted by the Lime Basil Sorbet). My kids loved sitting on the cute benches outside to eat their cones, and they even had free treats for our dog! :) Another great perk: the mini scoop option. If you can't decide between all the fabulous flavors, you can get 2-3 mini scoops of different ones for around the same price. Score!

Oh, they have bacon ice cream this week. I thought everyone in the entire Yelpiverse should know.

The staff was great. Tons of different flavors. Fresh tasting ice cream. I tried a brownie Sunday and a mini scoop since it was so hard to decide. I will be back soon to get a pint for home!

Excellent spot in the burbs. I actually found it on Yelp, but decided to check it out because I heard about it from my dental hygienist in Spring Lake Park! Yes, she recommends sugar! I loved the hot pepper chocolate I tried so much I took a pint home. Super friendly staff, and I was even offered a stamp card. I will return. Ice cream season is only beginning!

I am an ice cream junkie and I love my ice cream one of the best things about summer. Grandpa`s ice cream is a gem and I love their ice cream, so creamy and the perfect sweetness, I want to go here everyday if I could.

They make all their own ice cream. Interesting flavors. I had salt caramel and another one with a strange name that had coffee, chocolate, almonds and toffee. I enjoyed the salt caramel, but wouldn't get the other one again as I couldn't taste hardly any of the ingredients. They have lots more to choose from! The mango sorbet and the huge cookie ice cream sandwich were loved by the kids. I like the framed art in the shop that said "Save the earth, have a cone!" No cup, no spoon to throw away. Smmmmmart! I just wish they made their own waffle cones. Cute shop that is exactly what you'd expect an ice cream place to look like. Now that we've found this place, we will be back to sample the licorice ice cream and salted almond...

I could really sum up my review of Grandpa's with my last visit. I got the 3 sample scoops of 2 peanut butter flavors and creme brulee. What else do I need? (and they even have a 3rd pb flavor...but it involved caraway which I'm a little scared to try). Great flavors. Really friendly staff.

Spendy, but good. I'll sometimes stop by here after having Chinese next door. Often I spend more at the ice cream parlor than I did on dinner. Try the Blue Moon. Maybe I just have fond childhood memories of this flavor, but I think it's spot-on. Refreshing without being overwhelming.

Located in a strip mall in Fridley, I didn't expect the melt in your mouth goodness, flavor, and quality of the ice cream I experienced here. The ice cream is full of flavor and very creamy. I had the almond ice cream and it was just perfect. My boyfriend had the bacon ice cream, which he loved as well. I'm not a huge fan of bacon ice cream, but if you like bacon ice cream I think you'd be impressed. There are real chunks of crunchy bacon in it. They do root beer floats and orange floats too if you are interested in that. I felt the orange float was a little too sweet for my liking, but I guess that's how they usually are. I loved the almond ice cream and I can't wait to go back!
