Marble is a rock of calcite or dolomite, valued for its ease to carve and resistance to shattering. The Romans, the Greeks--the Ancients!--used it in plenty to give life to sculpture; they turned raw rock into the image of MAN, under the hands of experts like Michelangelo in his timeless "David." In its raw form, marble appears in interlocking mosaics of carbonate crystals before man intercedes and turns it into its own image--into art. The same can be said of Spanky's Ribeye, which I ordered with au gratin potatoes and portobello mushrooms, rinsed with a Cab-Syrah blend. The menu described it as "exceptionally marbled"; indeed it was. In its raw form, my Ribeye was likely on the supreme end of "exceptional" before Spanky's gave it life with the touch of MAN. After the raw cut passed through Spanky's fire, under the guidance of Michelangelo-steak-chefs, its complexly marbled veins--carrying the perfect amount of fat, salt, and seasoning--found its way to my veins, now coursing at the slow speed my high-triglyceride blood now maintains. But as they say in Modern times, YOLO.

I was visiting my boyfriend's family from Ohio and on the last night we went out to dinner at Spanky's. The restaurant environment and view are great. We started off with the mussels and they were just OK. I have had better before. I think they were overcooked and the sauce was not outstanding. I ordered the Hawaiian chicken with hash browns, seafood pasta salad and wedge salad. The wedge and seafood pasta salad came first. These were both pretty good, nothing amazing. The Hawaiian chicken was decent too, nothing too special. The sauce on the chicken was super sweet. The salsa that came with was not very good and I did not like it at all. My boyfriend ordered the "Trust Me" which is a meal prepared by the chef as a complete surprise, so you have no idea what you are getting. We thought it was going to really fun and exciting, but his meal was pretty boring and he regretted ordering it. It was just beef ribs and broccoli. If you are ordering "trust me" you are pretty adventurous and would expect a bit more of an out of the ordinary meal! That was a real bummer.

Over the past 3 years we have taken my mother there for a big family birthday dinner. It is always impressive! For a group of 11, the food was fantastic, the service attentive. From the nightly specials (which were great) to the nicely crafted cocktails, it was all great. I would recommend the Chislix and the Philly CheeseSteak Lavosh for appetizers. I had the Portabella Ribeye, and it was fantastic. A great place for a special time in lake country. Well done!

Nothing bad to say about Spanky's. Food wonderful, service excellent if a bit pricey. My new favorite!

This is a very good restaurant (upscale for the area) but you can still show up in shorts and a polo in summer. Great food. Good wine list. Beautiful lodge-style decor. Spectacular view of Rose Lake. Indoor and outdoor seating. Perfect for a romantic dinner, night out with friends, or family dinner.

Visited here last night for a rare night out with my boyfriend. Instead of a great evening of conversation, we were met with roughly 10 overly intoxicated patrons who stood hovering over my boyfriend's back for the first 30 minutes we were there. The main dining room/bar area was extremely cramped, and our food was handed to us from around a pillar in the dining room because our waitress couldn't get to our table because of the hovering customers. It was an extremely noisy atmosphere, so if you're looking for a quiet evening away from the kids, this isn't the place to go. Now for the food. We ordered the onion rings as an appetizer, and they were fantastic. They were beer battered, and weren't soggy or greasy, although I think they would've paired well with a house made onion ring sauce, not the ketchup that was provided. I ordered the queen cut prime rib with au gratin potatoes and a garden salad, and the boyfriend ordered the king cut prime rib with the garlic sauerkraut mashed potatoes and a garden salad. The garden salad was your typical house salad, nothing fancy or original, which was to be expected. Our reservation was for 8pm, so we expected the prime rib to be a little more done than either of us would've preferred, and it was. It had a fantastic crust on it, and the seasoning was absolutely perfect, but the meat was medium to medium well. The au jus was seasoned just right, and was an excellent complement to the prime rib. The garlic sauerkraut mashed potatoes struck me as odd at first, but did have a good flavor. The au gratin potatoes had a good texture, but the cheese sauce tasted like it came out of a can with some paprika sprinkled on top and broiled briefly. All in all, the food was good, but a suggestion for those who intend to dine here: make reservations well in advance, and make it for earlier in the evening. Also, be specific as to where you'd like to be seated. If we do go back, it will be in the off-seasion.

I love this place! It's one of the top places to eat in lakes country in my opinion. I had the walleye and ribs. Both were very good. Most items on the dinner menu looked to be between 15-30$. You may pay a little more for a meal here, but the quality of food and service are worth it.

I grew up in the Vergas area and have been t this restaurant many times over the years, mainly when it was under different ownership. I can tell you that the current owner/proprietor has made dramatic improvements to the building after a fire a few years ago. The venue is elegant, but friendly, and the staff is outstanding in their warmth, attentiveness, and efficiency. Our food was wonderful! I enjoyed a cup of beer cheese soup, and a strawberry chicken salad, topped off by a wonderful cup of coffee and a heavenly slice of banana tiramisu cake. We had the best view of the lake from our booth on a perfect summer evening. Then only thing that would have made our experience better would have been some live piano music from the baby grand near the bar.

The best food in the area hands down! I've eaten at great restaurants all over the world, and this chef is better than most of the chefs anywhere else. While their regular menu is great, try out an event where they're offering wine or beer pairings and a set menu. It's a great value, plus you get what the chef wants to cook, which is always in season and delicious!

This is a great restaurant with good energy and fantastic food. The owner is on-site and in the kitchen or talking to guests. Guests tend to be very friendly and it gives the whole place a good vibe. The two bartenders were attentive, friendly and solicitous without being overbearing and fake. Ah, the food (which is the main reason one eats out, right?) ... superb. The menu offers a good variety but not so much that you worry about the kitchen being able to prepare and serve it correctly. The bar is very good with a decent range of wines ... although the "by the glass" selection is a tad limited. Drinks are generously poured and well mixed and concocted. The setting is equal to the challenge. It's a large room with (of course) a fireplace and the bar running to the side. Noise is a bit loud but not as bad as I've experienced in similar settings. Unfortunately, it was dark when I visited but I'm told there's an outdoor patio with drop-dead views of the lake. And, you've got to love "cabin/lodge" decor. The only down-side: it's too far from our home to just drive up and eat. But, it's going to be a "must-stop" when I'm in the area!

Three people in our party had very different requests for food and all needs were well accommodated. One in our party required gluten, soy and dairy free meal and was delighted to enjoy their broiled walleye! My 90 year old father enjoyed his Hawaiian chicken but felt the portions were large. I ordered the " trust me" entry which you trust the chef's creativity. What a delight! I enjoyed tender and tasty flank steak with chimichurri sauce which was absolutely perfect!

My wife and I have eaten at Spanky's now about 6 times in the past year. If you like Beer Cheese soup theirs is top notch! The Log building and location are just what we enjoy for a northern Mn atmosphere. The view from the window or patio is very calming and serene. We have between the two of us ordered most of the menu options with varying degree of satisfaction. Once our appetizer (Walleye Fingers) was mistakenly given to another table, my Fillet Minion was ordered medium rare and delivered Crisp! The large jumbo Shrimp had the distinct chlorine flavor! However we have never had a bad order of Walleye cooked both of their options, and the Salmon has been delicious. Same goes for the Pork options. Rib Eye steak, and Prime Rib tender melt in your mouth wonderful! Have not tried the Duck, but then I do not eat Duck! The beverages are well made, not burnt or watered down. A very descent wine list to fit most pallets. Potatoes (yuk) runny, over powered Garlic just pass on them, you will be glad you did! If you like deserts, go find a place that has some. The menu is limited and frankly not very tasty. The help. Well let's just say unattractive, inattentive, tacky uniforms, unfriendly, discourteous just to give you an idea of what to expect. Definitely expensive, but always busy. Customers range from extremely casual to runway couture! Best call early for good seating and 7 days a week it is busy. Lots of room for improvement, but definitely has the potential of a great resturaunte!

Try to stop here everytime we're come to the lake. Nicest place to dine in the region. The BBQ ribs are perfect.

One of the best restaurants around these parts. Fantastic food and good service. The view over Rose Lake is beautiful and you can sit inside or outside on the deck. The place burned down this last year and they just finished rebuilding. They did an awesome job and haven't missed a beat. If you like walleye they know how to server it. My favorite is the Walleye Oscar, can't get it better! This is a great place to take the whole family and is a great place if you want a nice place to go for the evening.
