Great burgers. Good bar selection. Perfect spot after 5 days in the Boundary Waters.

Atmosphere and food was great. Good burger and Walleye sliders after exiting the Boundary Waters. Waitress gave good service. Would have given a higher rating but bartender was extremely rude. Was greeted terribly and even had a coaster thrown at me before receiving my drink. Worked service industry for years and I wouldn't dream of being so cranky on the job. Nice beers, stay away from the flat cider!

Really disappointed in this place. Nothing was good, it was only edible. Salad and entrees underwhelming and low on any real flavor. Service was friendly but not what I would consider good. Sweltering inside the building, air never kicked on.

Visit this place every summer! It is a must stop! What a beautiful place! The food is awesome and the staff is friendly! The owners really care and if your a regular patron is very easy to see! Can't wait to get back up there next summer!

The food is good if you've been out in the woods for a week, otherwise the Rockwood just isn't great. The salad was limp. The wild rice soup was 3/4 cream and bacon, And because I'm a vegetarian I couldn't eat it. The menu should indicate which foods are not vegetarian friendly. I'm from minnesota too, I understand meat is important, but 99% of the menu is meat. The food needs an upgrade, and the decor needs a complete overhaul. I've seen gas station bathrooms that are nicer. It would be nice to see this Ely restaurant succeed.

Burgers were pretty good quality and taste, but honestly there was nothing special about them, they could have been from anywhere. The hostess seemed flustered and was rude, and had us wait for a table for 2 while she proceeded to seat three groups that came in after us with no reservations. Waitress was very sweet and atmosphere was pleasant and seemed down to earth and relaxed. I tried a "walleye wonton" which sounds crazy but it was sooooo very good! It was a sort of blended mousse texture inside and was reminiscent of crab rangoon. Very yummy.

Really disappointed here. The customer service was lacking, but I suspect they didn't care since all the tourists here for the Blueberry Festival will stop there anyway due to a lack of restaurant choices in Ely during the busiest time of the year. For starters, we had the Walleye Rangoon, which was very good. I ordered the Walleye sliders for my meal but was disappointed they didn't have any Walleye Chowder left. Really? It was 1pm before the biggest tourist weekend of the year and they were out of a signature item? It wasn't a lack of Walleye as my sandwich and our appetizer showed. The kids meals were nothing to brag about, but my boys enjoyed the cheeseburgers and my daughter was content with the grilled cheese. The downfall was unfortunately the Truffle grilled cheese. Both my wife and sister ordered this since it looked gourmet with both cheddar and Parmesan cheeses and truffle oil. As soon as she took the first bite, my wife proclaimed "This is disgusting" and wanted me to taste it. It could have been the tomato, but most likely was the cheese used - American with no sign of Parmesan - and, according to my wife, similar in taste to Velveeta. I understand restaurants don't always get meals right, so we informed our waitress. Rather than take it back right away she tried explaining how it was made. When pressed, she said they sprinkled Parmesan on there and it might not be visible. We sent the sandwiches back and got the bill. I politely asked for the sandwiches that were sent back to be removed from the bill, and she had to check with her manager. Moments later she said they could give us a 50% discount for the sandwiches but that was it. In hindsight, had they taken the sandwiches off completely or if the manager had stopped to come by even once I'd most likely not be writing this review. I was really hoping after so many other restaurants in Ely had failed (Vertins, Pizza Hut, Hardees, and A&W, to name just a few) that this one would be a breath of fresh air, but I can't say that is the case.

Not worth the hype, service was bad, food worse. Really not worth it, the back patio is nice but there are other places to go in Ely.

I've been here twice now. I like the layout and that they have a bar and patio but the food was slightly lacking and could be better. I believe this place will get better over time.

Rockwood reflects what living on the Northland is all about, from the warm cabin feel to the decor of old memorabilia of fishing, skiing, mining, and hunting to menu items that gives the taste of Northern Minnesota with walleye and wild rice. They offer other items on their menu as well: pasta dishes, burgers, hand cut steaks, sandwiches, soups, salads, and some Mexican dishes. With a wide variety of dishes, you are sure to find your taste at Rockwood. As a tip, they do offer gluten free options as well. You would just need to ask their knowledgable staff. Rockwood offers a Daily Drink Special from 3:00pm to 5:00pm every day: 2 for 1s on all beer/wine/drinks in the lounge only. They have a full bar with a TV to sit back and enjoy a cold one. Also, they have the Rockwood Birthday Special. It must be on your actual birthday. You will get your age as a percentage off your meal. So, if you are 21 on that day you get 21% off or if you are 75 you get 75% off. And, if you turn 100, you deserve a free meal. On Thursday nights, they have live music on the patio starting at 6:00pm. They will place a sign stating that there is live music. You start out having a basket of bread and breadsticks that is served with hummus, maple butter, and garlic butter, which were all very tasty, and will make you want more. Rockwood offers a kids menu with choices of a cheeseburger, noodles, chicken strips, quesadilla, and even a walleye sandwich. The portions were good for what they charge for $3.95 to $7.95, but the kid's drink is not free. It's $1.50 more. That is disappointing. Either add it in the price or have it free; it's more of a visual thing. Jodi had the Prime Rib with Garlic Mashed Potatoes, and Sauteed Vegetables. She thought it was ok. It was fattier than she is used to, and parts of it were raw even though she ordered medium well. She really liked the garlic mashed potatoes. She thought they were delicious with just the right amount of garlic to make it stand out. The vegetables were good as well, a nice little variety. With the entree, it had the choice of salad or soup, and Jodi chose her favorite: Wild Rice Soup. Jodi used to order the Slider Sampler. It had pulled pork, chicken, and beef. They do not offer this item on their menu any longer, and Jodi was disappointed to see it go. KayMarie had the Rockwood Burger, that has a thick slice of prime rib, Swiss cheese, lettuce, onion, tomato, and garlic mayo. She thought it was done well, but was really messy. Even though it was seasoned fairly well, it just wasn't her taste, but others may like and enjoy it more. It also came with fries, that were too overdone. She could not eat them all. Brian had the Rockwood End of the Road Flat Iron Steak, made Black and Blue. I ordered the garlic mashed potatoes as well, and the sautéed vegetables. I like my steak medium rare, and it was done to my liking. My meal was very good. Also, with the meal came the choice of salad or soup. I chose the Wild Rice Soup. This soup is my favorite and is the best I have eaten. I always look forward to having a bowl every visit. Christopher ordered the Stuffed Meatloaf which has ground beef and Italian sausage stuffed with mozzarella, ham, basil and sun dried tomatoes served with garlic mashed potatoes and topped with bechamel sauce, a white sauce made with milk and herbs. The entree had a choice of a salad or soup, Christopher ordered the Tomato Basil Soup, we all had a taste of his soup and it was very tasty. The soup tasted like a melted pizza. We will have this soup again. Christopher liked his meal. Jonathan ordered the Cajun Pasta. It had zucchini and fresh tomato, then was sauteed in a Cajun bechamel sauce tossed with penne pasta. You can choose either shrimp or smoked chicken. Jonathan chose the chicken, and he really liked this dish. It was spicy, but not overpowering. As for handicapped accessibility, a standard 32" chair will fit fine. One thing I liked the most was the handicapped bars in the bathroom. They weren't ones I am used to: they were all one piece that curve at the beginning, and they were on each side. If you are looking for a local favorite experience, then Rockwood would be the place to go. As for our family, we may try Rockwood another time to try to find that taste that keeps us coming back. So, we suggest to Stop In, enjoy the Northern decor, and find what you like to order. Please check out our family's other adventures, leave us a comment and please follow us familyfriendlyoutings.bl…

We stopped here for lunch on our way through town and sat outside on the patio, which was really nice. This patio is nicely landscaped and right in the middle of town, so it's good for people watching. I ordered the fish & wild rice burger with sweet potatoes, and was happy with my choice. The burger was delicious, and the sweet potato fries were good but a little too greasy. I found myself wishing they came with more of the aioli that was on my burger.

LOVE THIS PLACE. It is in the old Hardees building in dwontown Ely close to the theater on Sheridan. My brother and I make it to Ely once a year for grouse hunting and were hungry after a long day. We noticed this place and decided to stop and try them. Glad we did! The food was awesome! We stopped 3 times that weekend. I didn't make it up in 2011 to Ely, but will be there in 3 weeks and looking forward to stopping in for more great food! I highly recommend. I have tried the other "steak place" in town and Rockwood rocks and rules over them!

As stated in the Ely Chamber's blurb: Ely's newest restaurant and cocktail lounge. Fun dining in a fine atmosphere featuring patio dining in the heart of Ely. Open Daily, 11 am to 10 pm. Atmosphere is great - Northwoodsy inside, and outside has a water feature that goes around the entire patio - nice for what was once a concrete corner Hardees. They have landscaped it beautifully and the touches of pure Ely are really nice - mementos of mining, camping, sled dogging - the list goes on and on - lots of good stuff to look at and talk about. Great asset for Ely. Another great thing is live music - which draws a crowd. Visited at around 10:00 pm tonight, a Friday night. They are apparently open until 1:00 am on Friday nights. The inside was warm as it was a warm and humid day. The entire guest population was on the patio. When we entered the restaurant we were told to order inside because after 10:00 pm there is no patio service. (?!?!) When ALL of your guests are outside? Wow. We had a drink and some fries, which we waited inside to receive, then went outside to eat, and went inside to pay and left. I suppose a not-so-honest person could have skipped the latter step and just walked, since there are no outside attendants helping to squeak additional drinks, appetizers and TIPS out of guests. I think they will get this straightened out. They have too much going for them to fail. Ely needs this type of dining establishment. It is in the heart of Ely, it's cool, it's got good food, great drinks (my blueberry mojito was delicious!) and it is a fun place to meet.

Not bad. Nice patio-good staff-OK bar food. We had the walleye tacos and chicken quesadillas-it was fine-but pretty close to Applebee's.

Visited the Dorothy Molter Museum with my wife, son, mother and elderly grandparents. Initially stopped there because I could drop off the grandparents right at the door and we didn't have to hunt for street parking. The food was definitely worth raving about. Wife had the walleye fingers and I had the "rise and shine" burger: burger with hash browns, bacon, cheese and a fried egg. Hand-cut fries are delicious. Next time I am there I will stop by at the bar for a drink. If you are in Ely and only have time for one meal, make it the Rockwood.
