My how this place has gone down hill. Used to be the go to Mexican place around my house, but, over the years for some reason it's gone from the "go to" to an after thought. This weekened, I decided to see if it was as good as it used to be or as bad as it had gotten. Sorry to say, as bad as it got. Was seated in the corner of the bar area. Literally, nobody there except for a couple drunk chicks at the bar for happy hour (it was 4pm), and NOBODY dining in, and we're seated in a corner booth that requires one person to enter it at a time to sit down. Regardless, we get the complimentary chips and salsa, and that is good. Order the Mozz sticks hoping they'd gone back to the original way they used to do it which was house made sticks... nope. Generic, horrible frozen ones. And they're served with a ranch packet. Yup, a god damn packet of Kraft ranch dressing. Not the house ranch sauce you get with your chips or even a marinara/salsa mix. A packet of dressing. Some how my girlfriend gets a refill during this, while we both have empty glasses sitting there, yet my water goes unfilled for the entire course of the meals. After a nearly 15 minute wait between putting in the app order and the return of the server, we finally order. Meanwhile, the chips and apps are completely gone by now. I get the burrito deluxe and she ordered some combo platter with a little of everything. Food took about 20 minutes to come out in a dead restaurant. How? I don't know. How do I know it was 20 minutes? Running time on the soccer match blaring throughout the bar with the aforementioned drunk chicks yelling at the tv (which made me at least laugh considering nothing happened, not even a shot on goal). Food was meh. Rice was cold, and the food was pretty tasteless. Lucky I didn't eat all the salsa and ranch from about an hour ago to put on my burritos. The girlfriend's food was ok. Taco was the best part while the tostada and enchilada were mehs. Glad I didn't need anything. I would have hated to have bothered my server with her job. Lucky enough, I didn't see her once through the meal to have to burden her with the request for more water or salsa or guac or anything. Was delivered the bill rather quickly without being asked about dessert, and of course not told to go to the front to pay (lucky I remembered or we'd still be waiting there trying to figure out where to pay). All in all, totally regret even giving this place a try and was so disappointed I had to apologize for actually subjecting my girlfriend to this shithole. Save your money, go to Chipotle across the street or go find another Mexican place. Let this place die and hopefully a new one can open up or open up under management that can run it correctly.

I have been to many El Loro locations but this place has tarnished this chain forever. I walked in with my children Friday May 15th. I was seated with a cold greeting and arrived at my booth only to wait 15 mins before I confronted Cheyenna and asked if someone could please serve us. She snootily replied "yeah what do you want" I was so taken back by her response I requested to speak with management. She once again replied In a condescending tone "yeah" The conversation became less than pleasant when I decided to leave the restaurant with my children and she mockingly slouched down to their height and waved goodbye. I have been trying to teach management since this incident and have left messages and still have received no reply.

Very disappointed in this place! The moment we walked in there was no warm greetings, the waiter was on his phone, The food was super salty. If I could I would give them no star!

Walked in and it was crickets! Hey........ That's awesome. I love my space. They sat us down and we got our drinks within 7 minutes. Giant beer please! Chips were hot, they bring salsa and cheese. Chips are lacking salt almost entirely but the fact that they were warm totally made up for that. I ordered chile rellenos, and a burrito, with a side of rice and beans. Huge portions... I couldn't finish it all. Id be FAT AS FUCK if I did! Darin ordered chicken tacos, Madison ordered the kids taco and rice and beans, and Diana (always the odd one out) had chicken fingers and fries! Everything was good! I'm not complaining about anything other than the fact we had to wait for refills. I give it 4 stars because Diana's " chicken fingers" we're probably chopped up chicken patties from the bag! I'd go again.

El Loro was definitely a good choice for lunch after the parade. The service was friendly and helpful. The menu provided all sorts of choices that I haven't seen at other Mexican restaurants... which makes me look forward to eating there again and trying something new! We started off with some chips and salsa and added on a big bowl of warm cheese dip. I ordered the Burrito Grande which was very good. To drink... a cold glass of horchata. It was good.... not quite Don Pedro's good, but I will order it again the next time I head to El Loro. Everyone in my party seemed to be pleasantly satisfied with their meals. Hopefully we'll get to meet up there again sometime soon.

This is a wonderful place, our Friday night favorite!

I am reading these reviews and not sure where these people have been eating because I have eaten there three times and each has been HORRIFIC. Seriously, some of the worst Mexican food that I have ever eaten. The service is pretty ish and the food is straight up junk. No flavor, greasy and terrible. The margaritas? Maybe just drink straight lime juice and you'd have better luck. DO NOT waste your time and money going here.

These guys are ballers! The staff was on top of it and the chips and salsa flowed like water. Prices are affordable and the fajitas and nachos made me a believer. Best Mexican joint we've found in the cities so far. This place makes me want to do the cha cha. Left 'em a serious tip for the Comida Bueno.

I was just here with some friends for dinner on a Friday night. We arrived at about 6:30 and were seated right away. My friend asked the server what size margaritas were available and after listening to her he ordered both of us large Texas margaritas. She didn't bat an eye and went to get our drinks. She returned with two 60 ounce margaritas for the two of us. Seriously? This was annoying. If our table of 5 drank those two 60 ounce margaritas we would all end up wasted. We all felt she should've spoken up and said, "Hey, what's your alcohol tolerance? Do you want to vomit tonight?" Unfortunately, she didn't and we were only able to drink about 1/4 of each of them before we left. Foolishly, my other friend asked the server for her advice on a few menu items and she kept suggesting platters for 2. She kept saying, "No, just for me, I'm not sharing my dinner..." but she kept it up. She's tiny, so we think the server was just trying to get our tab up. The food was kind of gross. I had a combo plate with a chile releno and an enchilada. The beef enchilada was good but the chile releno was nasty. Two people at our table had them too and no one ate more than about 2 bites of it. The chips and salsa were good and it was nice that they kept bringing them. Overall, I was pretty disappointed. I love good Mexican and after reading the reviews on this place I had high hopes. I'll keep looking...

The food is inexpensive and fantastic! The staff are also very friendly! This is one of my favorite places to eat.

  • Joshua W.

Food is reasonably priced and very authentic. The margaritas are good, but pretty chain restaurant-ish. You better have some idea what you are getting because the menu is pretty much all in Spanish and the workers don't always speak English either.

  • Brent J.

Service is great and super speedy. I get the same thing every time, Beef Chimichangas. They're so good I'm afraid to ever try anything else. I don't think I will.

  • Adam G.

The waiter we had was horrible. I am usually very tolerant of bad service but this one even tops the worst service Don Pablo's can dish out. Wow. It's kinda too bad, I had the fajitas and they were pretty decent. Others in my group thought otherwise about the food quality but I was happy. One of the orders was wrong as well but the rude waiter topped it all. There are way too many other good Mexican food options out there to go here unless your very close

I never would have discovered this place if I hadn't moved to Crystal. Although its quite tasty...it does not really warrant driving a long distance to eat there. If you're right in the city, there are a handful of tasty Mexican spots that are equally good. The one thing that sets this apart from most other Mexican places I have been to (and there is hardly a shortage) is the delicious, mysterious white sauce that accompanies the salsa and chips. I assume its cheese based, but I have no proof of this. Last time I visited I got buzzed off Dos XX and had a delicious, delicious platter for a reasonable price. I will be honest though, the service in this place sometimes straight up sucks. I have had to flag down the server to get the check on a few occasions. Oh, and avoid it Thursdays...they have a mariachi band that plays from 6-8 PM and they bounce from room to room. You're guaranteed to get an earful at some point during your dining experience.

Filthy. Rude service. Unappealing, microwaved food. The empty lot should've been my clue.

Fantastic place for the $! You can't go wrong with this place! You're always greeted by friendly staff and as soon as they find you a seat you get your chips and salsa - no waiting or whatsoever! You order something from the menu boom it's on your table just like that within minutes. Tasty food outstanding staff! One of my favorite restaurants in town!

  • Richard Y.

The thing that gets me about el loro isn't their generic, mediocre American Mexican food, but that they claim it is "authentic." The service was good and the waitstaff friendly, but if you are looking for real Mexican food, you'll be disappointed.

  • Tom S.

Moderately busy, seated right away. I had a strawberry frozen margarita which wasn't bad, but just ok. I ordered the shrimp fajitas and my g/f had the fish tacos. The fish tacos were done perfectly but my shrimp fajitas were well overcooked. The fajita veggies were green peppers, onion and tomatoes. This presented with stewed tomatoes along with the overcooked shrimp. The refried beans were soupy. On the whole, the dinner was very overpriced for what you received in quality food. The service was ok, a bit lacking in followups for refills. I was impressed by the fish tacos as the fish is usually overcooked, but not here this time. I'm not going to rate it higher given the final price of the bill vs what we received in food and service. This is hit or miss depending on what you order off the menu.

This is our default restaurant when in Crystal. We also love Chipotle but here you find a much greater variety of dishes and the portions are very generous. I always order an extra salad because it is very fresh and tasty, no dressing necessary, just a little guacamole to bring the flavors together. Fajitas are so big we always bring a box back home with us. And the salad and beans that come with every dish are never ending. Very attentive and friendly staff, they acknowledge us as soon as we come in the door, they make us feel as welcome friends. Prices are very reasonable for the amount of food you get.

  • Robyn F.

Went here for dinner over the weekend. I had the shrimp chimichanga, and was pleasantly surprised that the shrimp were of the larger variety. I don't remember what my husband had but he said it was alright. Overall your average Mexican fare in the States.

    (3)
  • Sarah A.

Service is terrible and the food wasn't good at all, overcooked and poorly put together. Won't go back. I heard good things about this place, but was a waste of time and money.

  • Chris H.

I love this place. My wife and I eat here regularly and have never had a bad meal. The service is fast and food always comes out hot. The biggest indicator of how good they are was when my daughter's birthday came around and we gave her the choice of where we'd go she instantly chose El Loro.

    (5)
  • L D.

The setting was nice - typical mom and dad pop Mexican restaurant. Salsa was great! We had no idea what the white sauce served with the chips was and didn't really eat it. The food was salty - beans and rice were great. I'd sick with burritos and tacos.

    (2)
  • Shawn N.

The service was outstanding so give stars for that. The food was good but have had better Mexican food in the past without a doubt. Very busy place, with very friendly staff.

Great eat-in and takeout experiences! I've gone to El Loro a few times to eat in the dining room and I've always had a good experience. I haven't found any of their food super spicy so if that's your thing then you might want to another place but overall the food has hit the spot. I particularly like their tostadas. They are huge and you only need a few to fill up. Also, the white creamy sauce they bring with the tortilla chips at the beginning of the meal is delicious. I was particularly impressed that they even gave me a side of chips, salsa, and this white sauce with my takeout lunch a few weekends ago. Note - I wouldn't necessarily consider this the most authentic Mexican food experience but it is a great spot for the Western suburbs. My only gripe with El Loro is that it is really annoying to get to. There isn't a direct route and tons of stop lights.

This is one of the go-to places for my husband and I. Prices are reasonable and the food is good. The most of the options are pretty standard for Mexican places in a similar price range, but it always tastes good. I'm especially a fan of their salsa. The service is consistently quick and friendly.

Awesome authentic Mexican food and killer bar full of all your favorite drinks. Staff is always nice to me and my family and I can count on a smile when I walk in and another when I depart. I love the beef chimichanga. Best I have ever had.

Real Mexican food in the burbs, who would have guessed. You know I ate here years ago and don't remember being thrilled by it. Well this time was different in a good way. Lunch guest had the chicken fajitas and I had this Huervo con Chorizco dish. Eggs with Chorizco sausage and re-fried beans. Very good. The eggs were a little overdone but the sausage was great. Very tasty I'll say.

This place has to be decent being that it is able to compete with Chipotle right across the street. Right? The service is attentive.. so much that it seems like you snap your fingers and you already have that refill you asked for. Last time I was there, I had the three chicken tacos for $4.99.. Couldn't finish them because they packed them with tons of fresh, super tasty chicken. I have never heard a complaint about this place and it is super affordable. If you're in Crystal, this is one of your only options besides the 100 chains here.

Stopped in while visiting family. I was shocked at the vegetarian options. They had about 5 different options to choose from. That's not easy to find in the Chi. Usually I have to modify my own meals. What i wasn't impressed with was the food. I ordered a veg meal with a bean burrito, chalupa and a quesadilla. The bean burrito was just that with semi melted cheese and tomato sauce on top. The quesadilla also had semi melted shredded cheese and was just ok. The chalupa was a toastada cover with beans, lettuce and quac. Only cool thing was the insane 60oz Margaritas!

I was heading Northwest and noticed it. What I like is if you drive over Broadway everything is just there, no driving around. It's very large and roomy in here. For the holiday there were only 2 waiters and it was busy, so it took about some time to get our order taken, but got the chips immediately. The waiters were very different than the other places. They were dressed up in black slacks and white shirts, and looked very machisimo. It was a nice touch. I noticed the booths were made up of a nicely decorated wood. I got my usual 2 tacos, the shell wasn't really crunchy. This might be because it was stuffed with meat. The same good Mexican soft cheese, but it wasn't as finely shredded like the others I've been to. It tasted the same, I'm just used to my nice mound of cheese. I agree with Nick, just stop by if you're passing through or local.

This ain't no taco bell! My friend and I have made a tradition of having dinner dates at new mexican places and this was one of our favs. I ordered a burrito, a tomale, and an enchilada all on one plate for just $7! The portions were generous for the price and the food was delicious. Next time, I'll probably skip the tomale and enchilada and get three burritos. I am defnitely coming back, this one ranks top over the other mexican places I've been to.

My favorite place to go for Mexican food. Wonderful salsas, amazing staff, and even better margaritas. Great for people with young children, since they get you in and out right away. I am a very tough customer to please but I don't think I have ever left here disappointed. If you are there for lunch, the lunch taco salad and margarita can not be beat!

  • Dennis A.

This restaurant deserves a five star rating because the service is simply outstanding, the food is consistently flavorful and the price is very reasonable. One can argue all day about what comprises authentic Mexican fare, but if you just want mildly seasoned, hearty-portioned plates of standard south of the border yum, this is the place to go. Can't speak for other El Loro locations, but the one in Crystal is a winner!

    (5)
  • Sussy F.

El Loro always provides good food at a decent price. Each time I go in there it seems they've expanded the restaurant, which is nice as it then feels less crowded. Service is friendly and prompt. Their ranch dressing that they serve with the chips and salsa is amazing! The lunch menu has smaller portions than the dinner menu which are still very filling and the prices range between $6.00 and $10.00. I always leave feeling stuffed and satisfied.

My search for the perfect Mexican restaurant in the Twin Cities is a never-ending quest. As a true Mexican food fanatic and Texas citizen at heart... I fear my standards are just too high. My requirements are simple but.... alas..... I need amazing-to-die-for-spicy-hot-fresh salsa. Great chips. Brought out immediately & KEPT FULL. blow your mind delicious enchiladas on the menu. Incredible Mole = bonus! rice & beans included with meal no addl. charge. Non-nasty-cheap chicken/beef in the food. Actual mexicans running the place - cheerfully willing to speak Spanish with Gringos even better. Frosty Mexican beer on special & excellent house margaritas -- pitcher specials work too. Final Tab = cheap. If a plate of enchiladas is more than 10dolla... I'm not at the right place. If you do happen to know where this meal exists in MN, I want to know you. Now, as to El Loro -- this place is pretty good. I thought it smelled a little like ammonia and there were way too many pudgy MN Suburbanites in the place -- but overall was a satisfying experience. Actual Mexicans (check) --- good salsa (check) --- beer specials (check) --- reasonably priced enc.hiladas (check)... generally tasty, yes. As good as the places back in ColSta, TX? ... definitely not. 3/8/09 Hubby and I revisted El Loro this afternoon post-church. The huevos rancheros were incre-ible. I ordered them. Husband licked my plate clean after polishing off his burrito #2. Service good. Salsa yummy. Still smelled like cleaning products. While clean is good, I prefer to smell my tacos over the chemicals... If you can get over that....Best trick about this place is the lunch specials on a Sunday afternoon are about 5 bucks a plate and totally tasty. If you make the "mistake" like we did today of ordering the large house margaritas... you will pay $8 per person for your tub of tequila and spend the rest of the day attempting to sober up..... we have no regrets. We concluded that when you're a repressed white lutheran... it takes a handle of tequila before Jesus starts to make any sense at all. Amen El Loro.

This place is pretty good for authentic Mexican cuisine, and their prices are very fair. However, the service can be spotty at times, and the servers speak very limited English, so it's not unusual to be served a dish you didn't order -- or a dish missing some of your specifications.

  • Erin W.

I don't know what happened to this place. A couple of years ago I would have advocated this restaurant as one of the best places to eat in the Twin Cities. A lot has changed since then. Tonight I had the enchilada and tamale combo and it missed the mark. Service was below par (we never got a refill even though we asked for one), portions have become reduced, and the salsa & guacamole seem to have been watered down. The renovations although are nice and opens up the lobby but it no longer allows for a quality dinner ambiance as the bar activities carries from one end of the hall to the other end. I hope they go back to the ways that made them a staple favorite and leave out the desire for franchise expansion and commercialization of their products.

*Disclaimer* this restaurant is situated in Crystal; do not be fooled by its misleading default Minneapolis address. This is one of the few places that offers some awesome Mexican in the NW 'burbs. You can blab on and on about authenticity, but I just want something tasty and full of heartburn causing agents. This place is near the Crystal Shopping Center, a shopping center that this is just the older cousin of a crappy strip mall. The menu is packed with a lot of items. Those wanting authenticity, I can tell you every employee speak Spanish? The lunch specials are where it is at. If you choose to have dinner the prices are reasonable. I find the best thing to do is just order a combination place, pick a lucky number, or if some of the items sound familiar go with that. GOOD: * Very reasonable prices, especially specials * Free Chips with two salsas, salsa roja and some behemoth ranch monster * Always quick service * Large Menu BAD: * Menu lacks some descriptions of items * I can't bring myself to reciprocate "Amigo!" * You might just fill up on the chips, dank crunch. UGLY: * Crystal Shopping Center. Must try the Shrimp Chimichanga with your choice of beans or rice. Deep fried perfection every time. I usually burn my mouth because I cannot wait for it to cool down. Must avoid asking for Tacos and a diet coke, boring. Awesome Mexi in the NW Subs with the biggest criticism being, well, it's location.

I've been dining at El Loro in Crystal since it opened probably around 5 years ago. I've also dined several times at El Toro in Robbinsdale, it's sister restaurant. Both restaurants used to be so good with fresh, delicious Mexican food made with quality ingredients. Unfortunately, things have degraded over time. Portions have gotten smaller, things aren't so fresh anymore, and the past 3-4 times I ate at El Toro, I got sick. But that's a different restaurant . . . . I ate at El Loro on a Sunday night. Besides lacking service, we got a partially uncooked shrimp on our parillada platter (it was grey on the tail, which all good cooks know is an egregious error). Can we say foodborne illness? I also got a softshell taco melt in which the cheese was not melted at all. I could still see the individual shreds. The tomato I got was mealy and the guacamole was dry/brown in spots. The white dipping sauce for the chips looked kind of old, since it was kind of congealed on the top. There was also water on the sides, which made it look like it had separated. Like I said, the portions have gotten smaller over time. The parillada, which is $25, used to be huge! So much food! It has definitely reduced in size, which is disappointing considering how much it costs. That coupled with the lack of freshness in the ingredients really disappointed me. Even if these problems hadn't happened, there was still icing left to be put on the cake! I had a coupon for $5 a $25 or more order. When I went to the register, it took the man a while to ring it up. I was wondering what the problem was. When I got the receipt to sign, it was almost $2 more than it should have been with the coupon discount. I asked him about this. He told me that the deduction he put in was really $3.50 because the restaurant gets taxed for all of the receipts, even coupons. He also said that it costs him $500 every few months to print the coupons and advertise them. I am sorry, but a $5 coupon is a $5 coupon. I was really irritated! That tax money and the expense of printing coupons is the restaurant's expense, not the customer's. There are so many people who don't notice this bait and switch. I can't believe someone would do this to their customers, most of which are probably loyal (not anymore!). This whole affair was just wrong and unethical in my eyes. I know it's just $1.50, but it's just wrong! (Also, don't ignore the added taxes on YOUR bill because of the lesser coupon deduction.) A "bad" economy should not be a scapegoat for deceiving customers and lowering the quality of food and service. El Loro and El Toro have gone from being my favorite restaurants to my least favorite as of right now. I can't say I will ever be back to either one again, and that is unfortunate. RIP good authentic mexican food in the Crystal/Robbinsdale area.

This is simply one of our favorite Mexican Restaurants. Good drink prices, good service. Con, when the restaurant is busy it can be loud. Food is as authentic as you will find in America, for Mexican food.

Fabulous: The Burritos Mexicanos is the best entree I've had at a mexican restaurant. We drive 20 miles to come and order this entree. It is a very cute place. Great chips, great service. ABSOLUTELY fabulous value. The fajitas are on the smaller side of what I would deem a normal entree (but I can eat a lot). The enchiladas verdes are great along with many others. Two people can walk out being totally satisfied with a bill under $20. Can't do that at many places anymore.

I have a love/hate relationship with this place. Side note: El Ezteca, El Loro, El Toro, etc are all the same place, owned by the same people, with the same menu, and yes, the food tastes the same. It is a chain, it just doesn't appear to be. With that said, I have to say, well, it's ok. I know people who passionately love it, but I just think it's ok. The chips and salsa and that white sauce whatever it is, is really good, but everything else I have tried, I either didn't like, or just thought was ok. I am not a HUGE Mexican food fan, but I do enjoy it on occasion. What's great about this place is you get your food VERY fast, almost too fast! I would never NOT recommend the place, but I also wouldn't rave. The same with the others from this chain that I've tried: El Ezteca, El Toro..etc.

I love this place, it has good authentic mexican. You have to be smart and try not to fill up on the chips and salsa, otherwise you will not be hungry for your food. Most days of the week, it is busy, so I would suggest getting there before 6pm. I would highly recommend this place.

The Fajitas for two are the best fajitas I've had around town- the freshest meat and veggies and enough for 3 people. The chip dip is good, but doesn't compare to the white chip dip at Acapulco Restaurant.

The chip dip is very addictive.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
