the bakery, sandwich shoppe and pizza are awesome........the restaurant is average...the service overall is kind of surly....seems like a theme in rural mn.

So how nice are these folk? Very! Big smiles, happy to see ya, genuinely polite. Love it. Coming from my home in California this is pretty strange behavior. So they have just a whole menu full of American comfort foods. The ones we tried were delicious and well portioned. The prices were on point. Last words...a breath of fresh air.

We had the chili with fresh homemade rye bread and the beef pot roast. Both were great and recommend. We always return and food is consistent in quality.

Eaten here many times. It's the best restaurant between Saint Cloud and Minneapolis. Biggest caramel roll I've ever seen!

If you want real honest good home cooking this is the place. Huge portions fantastic food, well worth the stop. This is honest to goodness good old fashioned cooking at it's best. Not a flash in the pan hipster sort of place.

We had been wanting to come here forever, and finally had a chance to this weekend on our drive up north. No wait as it was really early, but, when we swung back through on the way home, a 30 minute wait at 10am - so plan accordingly. The place did fill up really quick when we were here around 7.30, so again, plan accordingly. Service was great for the most part, except a very long wait down the stretch for plate clearing, waters, and our check when our waitress got really busy with an influx of people. The food was amazing. We both opted for a Bros fritter french toast- she went with the raspberry fritter and I went with apple. Comes with hash, sausage, and eggs. We added toast because eating eggs without toast seems like something a commie would try. To get something quickly we ordered a caramel roll from the case up front as well. Really long wait for the food, which was offset by the arrival of a big caramel roll. No idea why they include a knife with it, easily one of the softest, fork tender rolls we've had. Pulled apart really easy and was great to indulge in before breakfast arrived. Perfect amount of icing on it too which didn't take away from the buttery/cinnamony goodness we were fork fighting over. Food arrives, and it's amazing looking. Two types of syrup too, berry and maple. TRY THE FRENCH TOAST WITHOUT FIRST. It's so god damn good even without syrup. The raspberry is lights out, straight cash money, hell yeah where have you been all my life good! Apple was good, but, paled in comparison to the raspberry. Perfectly tarty-sweet that was just perfect. Happy she could only eat half of hers haha! And for those breakfast junkies like us, the woman says she prefers this fritter french toast over Fat Nats... and I agree with her. I know, it's that damn good. Hash was perfectly crisp, not over done, and very flavorful. Loved every bite. Eggs weren't screwed up and were tasty. Sausage. I loved the sausage, she didn't think they were that good. The addition of some wild rice into the sausage was a great touch and something I can't remember tasting before. Touch this up with a little syrup, and really enjoy! A great place that I can't wait to hit up again when we road trip up to Moorhead.

Wow, Jackie was a phenomenal waitress, food was excellent. Best spot in Billings and the prices were very reasonable. Don't miss out on their homemade rolls, to die for...

Someone told me that if I passed this place on my road trip that I should stop by this place for lunch. I decided to go a few miles out of my way and give it a try. The place was very busy and I had to wait about 15 to 20 minutes. They don't have much of a waiting area but they give you a hockey puck pager so you can wander. The food was truck stop food nothing special and a place this busy does not appeal to me. They say you have to try the frisbee style pastries so I did and it was big and a pastry.

I mean check out the donut sizes! That alone should tell you they don't cut corners here. If you are on a diet, avoid this place!! The fritters and fritter bread are amazing! The rolls also put to shame any other touristy bakery, yeah I'm talking about you Toby's!! All of their baked goods are great. If you need a sugar rush and craving sweet rolls, stop here!

I usually love Nelson Bros,, but today the flavor fled. My husband and I ordered meatloaf and hot roast beef sandwich plate , respectively. When the meals came, you couldn't tell them apart under the deluge of brown gravy. The gravy was a slightly congealed entity. I had also ordered wild rice soup, which must have come from the bottom of the pot, as it had the consistency of pudding, and was as yellow as squash. I like my wild rice soup to be.... well, soupy. I still will go back there, I am going to chalk up the mediocre meal to a rare happenstance ( I hope). Keep you posted after next visit! **returned a few weeks later and had a much better selection of food. I had salmon Alfredo and hubby had smothered burger. I really enjoyed my selection that night. Only faux pas: when I unrolled the flatware from the SEALED napkin, they were covered in food grossness. How does unwashed flatware get rolled up and sealed in a napkin? Idk, maybe it's done by machine? Anyway, once it was replaced all was well. Service slightly slow, but it's mostly high school, college aged gals who have pleasant attitudes.

VERY average food. I'm guessing the high reviews are for the pastries or perhaps the breakfasts. Our nachos were COLD and my chicken quesadilla was basically chicken pot pie squished flat. Also lukewarm.

Good food but this place is run by teenagers who all seem to want to be someplace else. It would help to smile at your customers sometime. Fritter bread is awesome, great coffee! Will be back and hope to see a smiling face.

Love the sandwich bar, coffee, donuts, and restaurant. The sandwich bar has so many options, the veggies are piled on and the taste is delicious. Perfect for a picnic date with my lil man (1.5yrs) on the go. THANK YOU Travel Plaza!

When my date and I first walked in, the restaurant had a very comfortable atmosphere. We were seated promptly and our waitress was at our side within two minutes. Very pleasant service, but I can not give enough praise to the Chef and kitchen crew. It was obvious to me that our Chef (Rob) was trained in classic French cuisine. The menu may look like American traditional, but my taste buds were screaming a perfect fusion of American/French deliciousness. My lady (who while in the US Air Force) remarked that her meal was the best of her life. And that's really saying a lot!

Breakfast choices are outstanding! Very unique items, it was very hard for me to choose what to get! But I picked the crabby benedict. Holy crap was it good! 2 croissants with crab cakes on top, egg & alfredo sauce. It was RICH & just absolutely delicious. It came with hashbrowns too.. rarely do I ever not finish my plate but this was too much for me! Serving was enormous! I will definitely be back to try more items. It was refreshing to see something besides your same old boring ham & cheese omelets on a breakfast menu. Kudos for your creativity & originality! I should note, the other stuff on the menu looked good too - flatbreads etc. I will try when I get a chance. But I definitely recommend the breakfast! YUM!

I have been here several times and every time the food is great! Good drinks, friendly and prompt service. I would never guess this restaurant was attached to a truck stop; it could be it's own place! The fritter bread is to die for- especially as French toast! I never leave without picking up a couple loaves for home on my way out

I've lived in the area for 10 years. I dined here 8 years ago and had a good experience. Today, on our way to Fargo, we decided to stop for lunch. I was excited to introduce this place to my boy friend. Not good. 40 minutes to get our food. ... (at 230pm in the afternoon. ... so not busy), food was then served warm not hot. Our server was in some sort of weird daze. She didn't check back with us, never apologized for the delay, didn't respond when we asked if 40 minutes was an appropriate time to wait. Then to top it off.....a family with whiny children came in and they were seated in the center of the restaurant. What idiot would do that? Put them in a corner so they don't bother all the dining patrons. We won't be back. Completely unfortunate. Perhaps their food rep can do a server training. .... They need it!

This place is a gem on Hwy. 94! We've stopped in here on our way to cabin for 20+ years . Great bakery& sandwich bar. The restaurant is always good & quick friendly service. Digit!

I like this place - would really love to give it more stars - they are a bakery and make delicious things in essentially a gas station. The sandwiches are pretty awesome. The moon pies are rockin'. The blueberry pie is all kinds of delicious. However I do have a problem with the ingredients going into the products!! So we got the blueberry pie on the way to the cabin this past weekend since we missed pi day and for whatever reason, I had a hankering for some good old fashioned pie. The blueberies were phenomenal, it was dripping with goodness. Took a peak at the label and they use partially hydrogenated lard - i understand it's to increase shelf life - but come on - can't you just use good old fashioned lard?? It made me really sad and I'm not sure if i can buy another pie from them until they start to use real lard!! I demand real lard!

Nelson Bros and the Clearwater Travel Plaza is very well known for those who've traveled I-94 north of the Twin Cities. Having grown up just a few miles away, I worked in the restaurant during my high school years and have eaten here too many times to count. That being said, I haven't eaten here in years, so while home for the holidays I decided to reacquaint myself with a Nelson Bros. meal. I was not disappointed. While the restaurant interior has changed dramatically and they've added outdoor seating, a bar, and new menu options, one thing remains the same: the food is just fantastic. I ordered the Bros. Choice, which is two pieces of their "World Famous" fritter french toast (I picked raspberry), eggs, hashbrowns, and their terrific wild-rice sausage. Positives: -Awesome food. The fritter french toast is made fresh from their own bakery, and the wild-rice sausage comes from the local meat shop down the road. -Plenty of choices on the menu -Connected to the Clearwater Travel Plaza, so it's convenient for travelers. Negatives: -This place can be busy...especially on a Saturday or Sunday morning. As far as truck stops and breakfast food goes - you can't beat this place.

Friendly service. I had the corned beef hash (very salty). My wife had pancakes (fine). We shared the french toast fritters (good) with wild rice sausage (good). The food was solid. I'd go back...and try the monster sweet rolls or apple fritters.

First of all: Caramel and cinnamon rolls the size of your head. Seriously. Delicious and fresh baked daily. Restaurant: Last few years vast imprrovements have been made. Nelson Bros. added a little bar area, with an outdoor patio for nice weather dining al fresco. Myself and my partner sat out there just last Saturday on a 80 degree MN day in September (for those of you who are not aware... a rare occasion!) and soaked up the afternoon sun with giant bloody mary's in hand. Crab legs, BBQ ribs, and accompaniments rounded out the meal. Both were amazing: cooked perfectly and oh so enjoyable. I could have sat out there for hours enjoying more bloody mary's along with the sunset. Alas, life intervened. If you are up for breakfast, I would highly recommend the fritter french toast. I would recommend this little truckstop to everyone, whether you are stopping by for a quick bite before you get back on the road or whether you are stopping for a leisurely dinner in the afternoon sun. Menu items are generous, overall very tasty, and served promptly. Servers are attentive but not obnoxious. Overall, great food, large portions, and unassuming atmosphere. If you are looking for snooty brunch fare, steer clear. If you are looking for comfort food, served right, you have hit the bullseye. Enjoy!

Every time we go to the cabin we pass Nelson's...and it's hard not to stop in! The first time I was there, we had dinner. I had French toast and sausage links, which were both excellent. From that point on, I "needed" to have the wonderful French toast they made. So each time we went to the cabin we'd stop and purchase one or two loafs of raspberry, cinnamon or blueberry bread (with frosting on top) to make French toast the next morning. Although the family seemed to get sick of making French toast every time, I could/can never get enough. Last weekend we picked up a loaf of raspberry bread and the French toast did not disappoint...it never does! With this French toast, you don't need syrup because of the frosting...but a little never hurts! Besides the great French toast and the bread, Nelson's has friendly service with a decent sized bakery and a convenience store. This is a must stop if you're passing by! I can't wait for the next chance to have French toast using their wonderful bread!

Cook ruined the meal for us. Ordered basted lightly eggs and got medium hard eggs when we sent them we had to wait and then they only sent out one set of eggs. When we were done eating we got the other set of eggs. 11:00 at night and there were only 3 tables, so the cook was just being rude. Won't be back. Have to say the waiter was nice.

Today. June 24 2012.@9;00 in the morning. I have been waiting for this,to happen.Due to the fact ,there is no special seating area for truckers. Was very crowed with locals, and tourist. So here goes, A trucker gets up to the stand, ask were the truckers area was. Sara the young woman there ,get ''a deer in the headlights look''tries to give him a a pager ,but he gets mad and leaves....Then my turn ,all she has is a table next to the food door. And a pair of booths in the pub,but no wait staff,or a place in the pub.Up on the counter in a high chair. That is the hardest seats ,that I've ever sat on ! Then off to the fuel center, area where they have some hot foods, but not today. The manager came in ,I pointed her out to him ,and from what I saw it was not nice! The managers ,aught to understand that we do not have to buy FUEL here! But we can ,and at times we would like to have a sit down meal ,no matter how pricey you are! Nelsons have 3 basic eating areas, The main dinning room, The Pub,and a out side eating area, that has wait staff... So I get a call from a friend ,and we try again, but Sara was not there seating anyone,or in sight! We was seated out side. Heather L,was our waitress who was GREAT ,as always, fast ,nice ... So be ware,on how indifferent how the staff will treat you,and remember, you are still in a truck stop.......

This is a review for the Nelson Bros. in the Clearwater Travel Plaza. I LOVE this rest stop, but this was my first time eating at the restaurant. I had a burger and chips and my co-traveler had a half a sandwich and cup of soup. The (blue cheese) burger was on an excellent homemade bun, lots of blue cheese and delicious sauteed onions and mushrooms, but the hamburger patty was a pre-formed frozen patty vs. fresh meat. WHY? Why go through all the trouble of making everything BUT the burger wonderful? I just don't understand why places would choose not to use fresh meat! The chips were kettle cooked and spiced and tasty. My friend's sandwich was nothing special and her cup of soup was SO thick should could have eaten it with a fork. It looked pretty gross, actually. Prices were a bit high ($9 for burger with chips), but I guess that's what you get nowadays, especially in places where they have you "trapped".

Ok yes this is a truck stop!!!! If your a girl be prepared to be ogled at by all the nasty truck drivers there!!! The food however is kinda worth it... Lol... The fritter French toast is amazing, it comes with wild rice sausage also amazing!!!!! They also have pretty good bloody marys!!!

Really this place is a must stop. The restaurant, bakery and bar are all wonderful. The food is fresh and hot. No freezer dinners. The bakery has an open service area so you can watch the goodies baking and donuts cooking. The staff is friendly and helpful. I never find anything to complain about even on my whinyest days. No matter my mood on entering they always find a way to bring a smile to my face before I leave. The Prime Rib is primo and enormous! Both cuts are tender and hot. I can't finish the 16 oz much less the 24. I think those are the weights after cooking. The Chicken a la King is the special and comes out fast and steaming I haven't had it yet but if the look on the faces of the 15 people that ordered it while I sat here is any indication, it is delicious.

Terrible cust service. Employees are rude and did not care about customers. Nothing to say about food because I left. Ridiculous to stand in line of 10 people choosing sandwiches when all I wanted was a cup of soup

Holy fritter pancakes! This place is f'in delicious. They have an awesome bakery with awesome elephant ears, fritter bread, and things that will fill you up like a little Fatty McFatterton. The breakfast I got came on two plates and I almost couldnt take the whole thing. Thats impressive to me. The fritter pancakes are the centerpiece and biggest attraction and are well worth it. Its ok - once in a while wont give you diabetes - just go for it.

I had breakfast at the travel plaza this morning with family. I ordered fritter bread French toast. The French toast came with a long black hair on top of it. When I sent it back they simply took the top piece off and put a different piece on top that was clearly not freshly made. I know they only replaced the hairy piece because the waitress told me so. By this time all of the food was barely warm. I didn't want to spoil the family time by complaining again so I ate some of it, all the time hoping I wouldn't run into another disgusting hair. The whole event left me unwilling to return, because I no longer trust their sanitation or service standards. I live 3 miles away, so I'm pretty sad to cross the place off my list, given there are few choices in the area.

Prompted by my boyfriend's ravings, we stopped at the Clearwater truck stop for gas and breakfast on our way through yesterday. Pastries as big as your face? Check! Seriously. Everything looked so good that I was tempted to get more than one, but given their size, I showed remarkable restraint in only choosing a single cream cheese flip. And a loaf of blueberry fritter bread that made it home unscathed. And a pack of wild rice cheddar sausage links. And a pack of wild chokecherry pretzels. If I find my way in the area again, I'll time my meals/gas stops around Clearwater and indulge again.

Stopped in on a drive back to the cities. Wonderful breakfast. Loved the raspberry French toast -- a great blend of tart and sweet. Eggs were fresh. I enjoyed the sliced apple garnish. Service was quick and responsive. $12 for a huge breakfast and coffee. I will definitely be back!

4 stars on their breakfast, thats the only thing I order here. It is a truck stop but I have eaten here several times and always go with breakfast. The rest of the menu also looks good but the fritter french toast is way to good to pass up. They make apple cinnamon, blueberry, and raspberry, all are outstanding! You can even take home a loaf from the bakery for at home. They also have a variety of omlettes that are excellent and you should get the wild rice sausage! It is made at the local meat shop and goes well with any breakfast item. They also have a full bar, the bloody marys are tough to beat, along with many beers and cocktails. If you are headed in the direction of Clearwater don't pass this place up!

  • Andy J.

I've only eaten breakfast here, but it is always excellent. I recommend the omelet topped with a biscuit and gravy. The only negative is the place is always packed for Sunday breakfast, however we are generally seated in 20-30 minutes and service has always been good.
