I've eaten at the Blue Ox many times. Great for lunch! Good food, Fast, good portions at a good price. Have not had a bad meal ever. Very consistent. Sandwiches are great, soups are good. Walleye sandwich is really good!

Very nice surprise and a welcome relief from my usual JJ or Subway routine. I am glad I found this local sandwich joint. I had to come back before I left town. I'll stop by again next time I'm in the area. Would recommend to anyone.

One of my faves. Love the Turkeyville Smoker and the shakes are great!

  • Justin S.

This place is so much better than Subway. The tomato basil soup was fantastic as was The Uptown sub. They have lots of options for meat eaters, but it's great to see delicious options for those who eat a plant-based diet as well! Oh, and the staff seemed to genuinely enjoy their job which came through as warm and welcoming. Five stars for this sandwich place.

With Dita on this Don't get all the fours and fives OK I suppose Overhyped. They are clearly imitating Potbelly's which is fine. Like Potbelly's, the sandwiches are small and lacking in the meat department. Got the #4 Meat Axe (salami, ham and turkey) on a sourdough bun. All I could mostly taste was bread. I'd ask for double meat if I ever go back again.

Good fresh sandwiches.Long lines at lunch times. They have a huge variety of sandwiches so far just tried the mighty buffalo which is superb and the turkey swiss.will try their gyro next time.Clean joint and they have plenty of room for being a sandwich non franchise joint. They also have milk shakes and salads

  • Crystal L.

I will say this, the portions are amazing. But eh, nothing in particular that stood out to me. Everything tasted pretty blah. Maybe we got the wrong sandwiches? (We got the Walleye and the Swamp Thing)/

  • Scott M.

Great tasting food. We had a tuna sandwich as well as a meatloaf with cheddar sandwich. The shakes are amazing! Put this on your favorites when looking for a quick lunch.

Good prices, a nice variety of choices, and really friendly staff!

  • Luke S.

The buffalo chicken sandwich was great, I like to get ranch instead of blue cheese. The beer cheese soup complimented the sandwich very nicely. It's going to be hard to want to try anything else since the buffalo chicken was so good. Overall it was very good and I will be back!

  • Gaile S.

Every sandwich I have tried so far is tasty. My new favorite is the swamp thing. I also really like the tomato basil soup!! The customer service is always great. I recommend Blue ox!

  • Krista S.

I had the chicken bacon sandwich which was very fresh and pretty good. I very much love that they offered sourdough bread. My boyfriend had a gyro which he said it was really good. the place seemed clean and the staff was friendly. I would eat here daily if I worked in the area.

  • Jessica S.

Great sandwiches and soup, friendly people. Great for when you want something other than fast food.

    (4)
  • Geraldine C.

Omg awesome. I had the hot beef with mashed potatoes and it was so good and the staff were very friendly. We also had the Swamp thing and he said it was very good. Will definitely be back, they also deliver to local businesses so my other half got a menu and he said he will be ordering for lunch quite a bit.

  • Lisa K.

Have had a variety of things here. They all taste good, but it's kinda spendy for the amount of meat/cheese you get.

    (4)
  • Lisa E.

Saw lots of good reviews so we figured we would try it out. Two of the three sandwichs were made incorrectly. They didn't have a whole lot of flavor like we were expecting from the good reviews. They were good, just not amazing.

In the area for a show, wanted to grab a quick bite. I got the Reuben Club, and hubby got the Sorry Babe. Definitely coming back. Best sammiches we've had in a while. Wish there was one in Mpls, it would be one of our regular go to's. Two Yums Up!

    (5)
  • Doug W.

I've only been here once, and it was sometime about three years ago. I ordered the Ruben, and it blew my mind hole! It was sooo good. I don't think ill ever order another one anywhere else.

Love this place! Best chicken sandwiches! We have had a few of their sandwiches and have not been disappointed!

Great sandy! Had the Mighty buffalo. Fresh and hot. Cool place as well. Can't wait to go back.

When comparing Blue Ox to nearly any other sandwich place South of the river, it's truly deserving of my five star rating. I'm not sure why people bother going to those other chain/franchise sandwich shops that are on every other corner. The chicken sandwiches are not to be missed, my favorite is the Mighty Buffalo. My only minor nitpick is that I'd rather have crumbled blue cheese instead of the blue cheese salad dressing (just due to the messy factor). Salads are fresh and tasty and they always have some sort of special on the menu. Skip the fast food junk and go to Blue Ox.

  • Curt V.

Oh so delicious!!! The shore lunch and the spring thing were great. For the money a great value.

  • Shea C.

This place is so great. Hands down my favorite place to get lunch in Burnsville. The staff is very friendly and is efficient in their sandwich-making. It seems like I always get the correct amount of ingredients on my sandwich. They'll even recommend what toppings to put on each sandwich (Of course, you can add whatever you like that isn't in their recommendation). This place is 2nd in the infamous and well-regarded "Shea's All-Time Favorite Sandwich Shops" list. Can't stop, won't stop Potbelly.

  • Karl W.

Fantastic sanwiches, my fav is the buffalo chicken. I only wish the sandwiches were a bit bigger. They have recently doubled the menu to provide more options. They also deliver which is always a plus. The Rueben is also good on white bread (not a big fan of the wheat)

    (5)
  • Sean N.

Best sandwiches in burnsville. The walleye is my favorite and their shakes and malts are out of this world. A hidden gem for sure. Try their soup too

I found Blue Ox to be good, but very very plain. Unremarkable is the best word I can come up with to describe it. It wasn't bad... it was edible, so I guess that is good... It just was like when you go see a movie that is basically meh and then you never ever think about it again till you see it on tv and go, oh ya... I think I saw that.

First of all, lets analyze the competition in the area. After public outcry, subway is "almost" done removing a chemical from their bread that is used to make yoga mats. Yum. And the owner of Jimmy Johns won't give his employees sick days, (because I definitely want some dude with the flu preparing my food) won't allow them to unionize, and trophy hunts threatened species for fun. Sounds like a great guy. Why would anybody want to give those companies their money? I decided to look for a locally owned alternative. And i'm glad that I did. The Blue Ox is amazing. I tried the walleye sandwich and practically inhaled the thing. Blew anything you'd get at one of the chain places out of the water. The staff was really friendly, and the owner was working behind the counter, not off on safari looking for another head to put on his wall. I will definitely return.

I live in New Hope and don't get to Burnsville much but we stopped in here while on the way home from Northfield and got the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. I'm not sure exactly what made it so delicious but it was so very good. Probably most directly related to teh fact that they battered and deep fried the chicken while I stood there. On a subsequent trip to Burnsville we made it a priority to stop in here for another Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. So good.

Great sandwich shop!! Just moved to Burnsville and was looking for a good sandwich shop and found Blue Ox. I've had their Rueben and the italian sub and both were very good and fresh. Friendly and fast staff and a great menu.

Was looking for a non-franchise eatery for lunch and found Blue Ox nearby. I had The Sawmill and got The Reuben for another lunch partner. I'd definitely recommend getting a full sandwich because even that wasn't quite enough to fill me up (hence the 4 stars). The Sawmill was good as was The Reuben but I look forward to exploring more of the menu and soups on future visits. I'm thinking the Good Neighbor Club card might find its way into my pocket as well. Definitely like the MN referenced menu and options without too many options. The staff was very nice; gave suggestions for toppings and rang up my purchase right away so I could be on my way as soon as my sandwiches were ready. Next time I'd like to eat-in as the atmosphere is inviting.

I got the shorelunch, wife got the buffalo chicken, bro in law got the big meatloaf or something. They all sounded good they even looked good unfortunately they had no flavor to them at all. It was the strangest thing. We had each other try each others sandwich just to see if we were all tasting the same thing. We were, flavorlessness. I mean I could see one maybe not being good but all three, well I know I won't go back anytime soon.

  • Joe M.

Blue Ox is a great shop for quality sandwiches. The staff is very friendly and seem to care that you get exactly what you want in your meal, unlike other places that just want you in and out the door. The ingredients are very fresh and the bread is some of the best I have had in a sandwich shop. They have a variety of sandwiches ranging from the classics, to fish, to buffalo chicken. The best part is that they batter and fry the chicken/or fish in front of you instead of just grabbing it from a pre-prepared bin like at a Subway. So, if you are in the area for shopping at the mall, definitely skip the food court and give this shop a try.

One visit here and I'm a fan. Yup, it's that good... They have really good quality bread, great sandwich combos, and delicious soup. I got the tomato basil...awesome! The people here are super nice, too. They're willing to do whatever they can to make your sandwich great.

Awesome sandwiches, they have a fun Minnesota themed menu. I like the Lumberjack (meatloaf sandwich).

    (5)
  • Heather C.

Blue Ox is one of my go-to spots!! LOVE IT!!!! My fav sandwiches are the Mighty Buffalo and the Shorelunch. I am also a fan of their taco salad and tuna salad. Their peanut butter dessert bars are awesome! The service is always fantastic. Their "Good Neighbor" card earns you free sandwiches and free side items...who doesn't like free stuff? Not sure why people compare it to Potbelly.....I ate Potbelly once, said "meh" and never went back. Blue Ox blew my mind. And I like that it's not a franchise. Bottom Line.....you need to try this place!

  • Michelle L.

Great sandwiches and great atmosphere. I had the Buffalo sandwich and it was awesome. Boyfriend had the meatloaf sandwich. There are so many options I had a hard time choosing so ill have to be back to try more! It's all made fresh to order and its locally owned too. I also had the chili and it was pretty good, my boyfriend had the wild rice soup and he said it was great too and the soups make for a good, cheap add-on. My only complaint is that the water tastes like it has soot in it; they might need to clean the fountain machine or something.

    (4)
  • John M.

Not sure what all the hype is. The salad I had was decent with a small piece of frozen (think Costco but not as good) chicken. Place was empty. Suppose I should have gotten a sandwich.

  • Lesley G.

Its nice to get a lunch sandwich without going to the standard chains. I think that the sandwich selection is unique, and I appreciate the appropriate size of the half sandwich for those of us who aren't big eaters. The soups change daily, and are all really good. Cute theme, too.

  • Melissa L.

It was as yummy as I was hoping for! I went all out and got a buffalo chicken sandwich, potato soup, and Oreo malt! Omg... My mom got the sorry babe and she said it rocked! The clam chowder was to die for! Family friendly, quick service, fresh ingredients. What else can a girl ask for? My family and I will be regulars at that sandwich shop for years to come!

  • Mitchell B.

The Buffalo Chicken sandwich here is simply amazing. It's messy and delicious and I haven't found a better one at any other restaurant. They fry the chicken right in front of you and warm the bread to perfection. It's ready to eat right when you sit down! This restaurant is fairly priced and has quick and helpful service. They've got a nice atmosphere and it's right off of the highway.

I really cannot say enough good things about Blue Ox. I have yet to run into a Burnsville local that is not aware of this Sandwich kingdom. I use Blue Ox as a landmark when giving directions. My only disappointment with this joint is the portion size. Sure, some sandwiches are larger than others but basic ones like an Italian (Guido Bunyan) seem to me like they'd be cheaper to make and could be bigger. I don't ever leave hungry but I also don't ever NOT buy a side to go along with the sandwich. Any other sandwich establishment I opt out of the sides but at Blue Ox I feel it is required to leave full and satisfied. Size insecurities aside, this place kills it. I've been on a small sandwich tour and I'm thoroughly impressed with the quality of ingredients, the bread and the flavors. The Guido Bunyan is my go-to and is always consistently delicious. I most recently tried the gyro they are currently offering and I was surprisingly impressed. I would actually rank it above the Burnsville Center gyro spot. I recommend always getting a shake/malt/smoothie with your meal as they are all delicious and freshly made. I absolutely love this eating establishment and I believe they are going places beyond their Burnsville location if they keep it up. Plenty of seating, quality ingredients and super upbeat staff await your arrival. They want to make you a sandwich. Go get it.

I LOVE Blue Ox! I always ordered the Reuben with extra sauce and would fantasize about it every other day. The rye bread is soft and not overpowering. They also deliver. Sadly, our office move to Edina and I have not found a replacement. Cold Jimmy John's just doesn't cut it. Blue Ox, please open a store in Edina!

This stuff is good but to me it's not super awesome! It's worth the experience though! The price for them is fair.

Good but they haven't reached great. The buffalo chicken sandwich is great--good selection of meat and yummy sauce. Everything else was average or just a tad better.

This place is a sandwich shop in the same vein as Pot Belly. They'll toast all of your sandwiches to crispy perfection. But Blue Ox has a far more interesting menu. Blue Ox gets brownie points first for being a small business and second (and most importantly) for being one of the very few places where you can walk in and order a meatloaf sandwich. Which is delicious, by the way. Their menu also features a number of chicken sandwiches, each with a 1/4 lb chunk of chicken breast. If soup or salad is more your thing, they have a number options too. They have Baked potato soup, tomato basil and a soup of the day. The six or so salads on their menu are available anytime. Prices at Blue Ox are very fair (less than $5.00 for their regular subs), but you can regularly find a bunch of coupons if you look around a bit. Seriously though, you wont need them. This place is definitely one new favorite places in the south metro! If you're near here, you should check it out.

I get warm-fuzzy feelings just thinking about Blue Ox Sandwich Factory. I used to work in Burnsville and we would order delivery from Blue Ox weekly. It was a popular pick with all of my coworkers due to the wide variety of sandwiches, soups, salads, and amazing smoothies. I was in the area for work today so I popped in for a quick lunch. The employees are genuinely friendly and always seem like they enjoy their jobs. The restaurant is comfortable and well lit with a cute patio for outdoor seating. Blue Ox is one of my favorite sandwich shops in the metro!

Terrific sandwich shop where they make it to order. Excellent soups. My fav is the mushroom soup and the fried chix sandwich. VERY VERY friendly sandwichnistas and the owners are top notch!

  • Bill H.

So here I am sitting in the Blue Ox with a full yet satisfied belly after stopping in for lunch. The environment inside is pretty awesome, the decoration is pretty nice and the people are amazingly friendly. The food was excellent, exactly what I'd expect from a mom and pop deli, thats well run and gets quality foodstuffs!!!! I got "The Meat Axe" which combines the awesomeness of smoked turkey, ham, salami, swiss, and fairy dust!!! I'm definitely returning soon and I highly recommend it!

Found this place via GPS on the drive from Minneapolis to Mason City. I didn't want a big lunch, as I was already screwed up from the travel/time change/sleep on the plane. It was right off the freeway so I stopped. Lots of choices that looked really good, but only some could be ordered as a half (I didn't ask about smaller versions of the others). I got the turkey, which came standard with swiss cheese, tomato, honey mustard and red onion. Good sandwich! The bread was really good, nicely toasted, and all the flavors worked well together, and I really liked the size for a half sandwich. I ate mine in the car, but otherwise I would have tried some soup. The place was very clean, and the service was excellent. I'd definitely go back.

Great, unique sandwiches. Would highly recommend as a better alternative to Potbelly. Had the Spring Fling and the chicken was done to perfection...

Love love love this place! Amazing selection of sandwiches as well as seasonal favorites and things only found here. Good price for quality! The points program is also nice.

If you're tired of chain-food and want an incredible sandwich, check this place out! You'll be glad you did. And the soup is amazing, too! Just a great, relaxing experience with excellent food and friendly staff. :)

Cheerful staff, they know the products. Boyfriend had a Meat Axe and praised it with "yums" as he inhaled it, he also liked the Beer Cheese soup, it had boring cheese flavor to me. I ate a Sorry Babe which was fresh and savory. I felt comfortable hanging out and eating. I liked that this place is not a franchise, too.

    (4)
  • Rykelle K.

They have two of my favorite ingredients to put on sandwiches: cucumber and sprouts!.. They were fresh and crunchy. YUM! My 'Guido Bunyan' sandwich made me happy! The bread was just the way I like it with a little bit of crunch. Not too crispy like gross subway "toasted" subs where they cut your mouth as you bite it, but perfect! The least favorite part of my meal has to be the potato soup.. It ALMOST did it for me. But all in all this place is a good contender against 'Potbelly' and 'Jimmy johns'.

  • Greer T.

I went here with my parents yesterday on my way home from the airport. I had a Tuna Melt sandwich on wheat bread with tomatoes, lettuce and pickles. It was good. I had no complaints. Nothing special. My mother had the Sorry Babe which is a roast beef sandwich with blue cheese on the kaiser roll. She ordered hers without the bacon. She said the bread was awful and ended up throwing out over half of the sandwich and eating half of mine instead. My father had the shore lunch but wished it was not deep fried. Pros: Quick, good area to park Cons: No wow factor. Kaiser rolls is no good.

    (3)
  • Sean M.

They have very good sandwiches, and a wide array of choices. Nice small town vibe inside, pleasant staff. Try the meatloaf sandwich, if you're into that sort of thing.

    (4)
  • Bernie D.

This place is really good, for an area that's full of chains and fast food, this local sandwich stop really stands out. Staff is really friendly, they'll make just about anything just the way you want it. I was in town for work for the week and ate lunch here 3 times. All 3 sandwiches I had were excellent. Prices were average.
