IT's a bar...with bar food...and curling. Ever been to TGIFriday's? Applebees? Same thing...with a curling rink and hockey rink attached.

We played a hockey game at Fogerty (the rink Gabes is attached to) and decided to head up for a bite to eat. Not our first time doing this, and we are pretty well known at Gabes considering we're there weekly for a game and we often will head up for a beer and chow after the game. However, this particular night was different. This particular night, apparently the staff didn't feel like working or didn't care at all, in the least bit. We sit down, pull our tables together as usual and get the menus. however, we're told the grill is already shut down and it's just pizza/fried foods for the night. The grill closes at 11. We're there shortly after 10. I think 10.13'ish. Great. So, after playing a hockey game, we now are relegated to greasy bar pizza or greasier yet deep fried food. Oh joy, I'm sure this will hit the gut nicely. Out the window are the sandwiches, burgers, wraps, and even a salad with grilled chicken. We throw in on some gouda fries and a cheese pizza to try and lessen the gut bomb effect. The food was ok, it's bar food, so it's not knock your socks off good or anything - despite their claim of "fresh ingredients" and whatever other catchy slogan they're throwing out there. Considering the options in Blaine are plentiful and VERY nearby, there is no reason for a place to turn their back on regulars that are going to be there every single week. For that matter, my team and league as a whole are done with this place. We can get bar food anywhere, and grilled bar food at that.

IMHO the food was barely OK. They nickeled and dime us to death. My wife ordered an Inside & Out Burger at $9.55. Lettuce was an additional 50¢. Tomato was an additional 50¢. Bacon was $1.00. Want a tiny cup of blue cheese dressing to dip your onion rings in? That will be 50¢. My wife's burger was supposed to be stuffed with cheese. All of the cheese had leaked out and the burger was dry and nasty. They never asked us how we wanted the burgers cooked. Will not be back.

We have been to Gabe's Rinkside Bar and Grill many times for cocktails and food. Several occasions the food and service were decent. Unfortunately, more often than not, service and food has been poor. Bad enough, we decided we would not return. Several reasons are listed below. I am doing my best to be accurate in my summary. We are really disappointed about Gabe's. Our family, with children and grandchildren does a weekly meal in a restaurant. We enjoy the local establishments . . . Gabe's will not longer get our vote. 1. The menu is very limited. Many of the meals I would like to order include fish. I am allergic to fish and this greatly reduces my choices. Remember this if you plan to visit Gabe's. 2. During two of the more recent visits, our server was a male by the name of J...... He was always in a hurry, made everybody at our table feel rushed, did not return until the meal was finished. J's... body language spoke volumes when we wanted a few extra minutes to order appetizers and when we also wanted to get the appetizers before ordering our entrees. It appeared the server had two other tables besides ours. 3. I was going to order steak and J... told me comments from costumers indicated it was bland and not good. He would not recommend it. I appreciated his honesty... but question his motives. 4. Food that should be hot is often served room temperature or cold at Gabe's. We had to flag down another employee to get help. This employee got a manager. The female manager (a brunette), told us the food was made to order and was hot. Two people at the table ordered the same food and both dishes were cold. This manager argued the food was made to order and that the way we got it is the way it should be. One guest told the manager, "than, if it is made to order, the food should be HOT." The manager said "well we did have issues earlier with someone not making that food right, but now we have someone cooking with more experience." The other four people were finished eating by the time the other two meals were reheated. The manger did comp. the two meals. This manager really needs training. 5. The Gouda Fries are terrific. The tortilla chips are not worth the money. You can do better at home. They were hardly warm enough to have the cheese melt and the toppings were skimpy for sure. Chips were not browned/toasted at all. Pizza, small or large really good! 6. On another occasion, I asked for my turkey avocado sandwich to be put in a wrap. J... had to ask the kitchen manager if that could be done. The answer, no. Really? This is not an unreasonable request. Had they said we do not have tortillas or anything except just a no. Ok. 7. Two other visits, we ordered two Pene Rosa entrees. Delicious, except cold, both sent back. I do not believe some employees at Gabe's understand competition is fierce and consumers can choose spend their money anywhere. Also, the better they treat customers, the more money Gabe's and the servers make.

Food not too bad. It appears they hand patty their burgers so points there. But my wife asked if she could have one of their sandwiches made into a wrap. The server disappeared into the kitchen only to return and explain that "it was too busy for the cooks to do this". Whatever Gabes. Hey management, get into your kitchen and remind the staff who they work for!

As far as bar food goes I think they have very good food and 90% of the time I've had great service. I think they have a pretty diverse menu for a bar as well.
