Places like this are so rare. Simply delicious, wholesome good foods that is made with a passion of cooking and love! They make everything homemade- breads are all from scratch and they use ingredients that are uber fresh and local. I was so surprised to find this here in Amboy. A place like this cooks up food that you expect in a 5 star restaurant in Europe. I recommend the coffee rubbed steak, German thick smoked chop, olive chicken and if they have it get the grilled Carmel roll! It's a treat.

I live in Austin, Texas but I never come to Minnesota without making the trip to Amboy just for a meal at this restaurant. Food is not all that important to me, and I must dine out for every meal 3 to 4 days a week, nearly every week of my life, across the country. But this is my favorite restaurant in the United States! The food is incredibly fresh, most of it purchased within a few miles of the restaurant. The pie and other desserts are to die for. And the ambience of this intimate little café is just wonderful. The locals love it and the visitors do, too. Just come eat here. You'll feel like you are in on one of the great secrets in the U.S.

Fantastic home cooked food done to perfection. Best meals I've had while in Minnesota. Don't pass up an opportunity to eat here. Coffee rubbed steak? Yes, and it was amazing, beyond any chain steak restaurant out there!

Great food and service in this little cafe. Only a couple seats so plan carefully. We enjoyed the pancakes and a broccoli cheddar quiche special while coffee flowed non-stop. They also had some apple spiced bread that was fantastic.

I sure hope this is the same place I remember. I was a campaign staffer for the DFL in 2002, and I would structure my weeks around getting to the Cottage Cafe. There sure weren't many votes to drum up in Amboy, but it was always worth the trip. The Red Cow burgers were delicious, the coffee ample, and the soups... oh, the soups. Honestly, I had the best split pea and ham soup of my life there. The woman who started the place had this great little trick: she sold hand-potted ceramic mugs, personalized, to anybody who would invest something like $150 in the restaurant in the beginning, and then they would get free coffee out of their mug for life. Man. What a great idea.

I'm so glad I found this place... it's easily worth the 30-min drive from Mankato. I've only been there for breakfast, but the lunch and dinner menu looks great too. All kinds of fresh-baked breads, rolls and pastries, and great cooked food too. One cool little aside: for kids during breakfast, they'll make a pancake in the shape of animals or whatever else you want... and the design is a lot more intricate than you'd think. The only downside: the place is small. We've been lucky, and haven't had to wait, but they're willing to take reservations if you call ahead.

It is a southern Minnesota experience to go to the Amboy Cafe. The food is wonderful and it has a very fun quaint atmosphere. I highly recommend the Raspberry Bread Pudding.
