Great, great food! If you enjoy an excellent BBQ dinner, this is worth the drive (we come in from the south Lyon area). Prices are very reasonable too!

Okay Bone Heads! You KILLED it the other day! We are locals and had a really disappointing time during our first visit here. We let the owners know and they asked us back for a second try. We buzzed in under the radar for our second visit and it was nice. Not super duper, but nice. A couple nights ago we stopped in for dinner with our two young boys. Let me say that I ate so much I thought my husband would have to ROLL me to the car. Everything was WONDERFUL!!! We were seated right away by a courteous hostess. Our waitress came right to our table and took our drink orders. BAM! Drinks on the table and our orders were taken. 10 minutes later...BOOM!!! Our food was out. I ordered the brisket dinner. It was so delicious. I love the garlic mashed redskins and I wish the baked beans came in a bigger size. My husband ordered ribs and he gobbled them up so fast that his face was covered in sauce. The kids ordered off the kids menu and both really enjoyed their meals. Thank you Bone Heads for caring about your business and showing us what a great place you can be!

My husband and I kinda gave up on this place a while back due to spotty service. I had 4 friends coming into town from Grand Rapids, and wanted something "local". Seeing as "local" in Belleville is a 6 mile drive with only 2 street lights, Boneheads is where we headed. It was PACKED when we got there! We didn't have to wait but a few minutes to get our party of 6.5 seated. It was Friday night, and they had beer-battered cod as well as prime rib on special. We all ordered drinks, as well as the pickle chips as an appetizer. They were hot and fried golden brown- just wish that so many of them weren't stuck together. The guys got some large beers, which they appreciated. All 3 of us got sangrias- 2 of us had peach which came in the big goblet- and 1 got the blackberry sangria which came in a tiny wine glass. The waitress said that since the blackberry one had more alcohol or something, it was served as a smaller size. I think that my feedback would be to just price the blackberry sangria accordingly if it has more alcohol- because my friend was sad she got such a smaller portion as compared to the peach one. Our food came out relatively quickly- my husband and I each got one of the specials- I had the fish and he had the prime rib. Both were very tasty and picture perfect. My fries were a bit MEH, just lacking flavor. Even salt didn't help that much. I was a bit dissapointed in the mac and cheese I got a side of- I remember it being tasty, but this time it just wasn't that great. I'm sure that we'll be going back again in the future now that we've had a better experience. By 9pm the place was dead- so that's probably a good time on Friday to avoid the crowds.

Very solid BBQ in a casual setting. We came with a group (including a small child). Started with wings, then had ribs and pulled pork, with sides of corn bread, collards, sweet potatoes, and slaw. Everything was excellent, the wings were exceptional. Large sizes, decent draft beer selection, and good service. If you're in the area, it's well worth checking out!

For folks not from the area...this place has a similiar vibe as Johnny Rebs in Long Beach. Based in an cool old building on the side of the road with a gravel lot to park with signs all over with skulls and pigs and bones. I ordered the bbq brisket (some pieces were tender and juicy but most were overcooked and dry). Friends ordered ribs which looked tough and dry too. Also saw a few pulled pork sandwiches which were shredded to nothing but mush. The place is cool and menu looks promising but the food was not that great. Ive had better.

What a cool building and history of said building. I'd ordered the tips with greens and green beans and cornbread. The beans and greens were fandamtastic, the tips were slightly overcooked and tough, one of the tips was perfect and if all were like this we would bump the stars up. Nice beer menu had Alaskan Amber which was really good. Service was spot on and restrooms were clean, they even had a original brothel license from Tombstone signed by one of the Earps, cool.

I was being taunted by the Call of the Mighty Meat Horn, it's call of MEEEEEEAAAAT beckoning from afar. So when a friend suggested BBQ for dinner, I suggested we try Bone Heads. As others know, the pickle chips are the thing to eat. I'm long since a fan of fried pickles but these were absolutely awesome. I'm not sure what's in that batter but it may be related to opiates. They weren't greasy, the batter was light, and they were definitely addictive. Our waitress first appeared to be kind of flighty, but it turned out she was just new and a little flustered. Our service didn't lack, however, and drink refills were brought without us having to ask. Bonus. We both got the full slab of ribs. This was a mistake, only because there was just so much food. I'm not the hugest fan of fall-off-the-bone ribs -- I prefer my ribs to have a little 'bite' to them -- but these were so tasty I could look past the difference. Along with the giant hunk of piggy came some mayo-based cole slaw -- also not a favorite, I prefer vinegar based, but still very tasty, a small bit of baked beans, and some corn bread. One of the two giant hunks of corn bread was fairly well browned, but still moist and yummy. You also get a choice of a side. We both picked fries, which were ok. Not bad, just nothing special. At one point the waitress suggested we leave room for their ice cream & cookie dessert concoction because the cookies had just come out of the oven. Were we smart we should have stopped and taken the rest of Babe home in boxes, but we weren't and so we ate that little piggy all up. No dessert for us, we were ready to explode. The entrance and insides are handicapped accessible. I didn't get a chance to see how accessible the restroom is, but it was easy to get to them. There is one 'handicapped' spot in their dirt lot, and it's poorly signed. The customers are an interesting mix of bikers [the motorcycle kind], families, and regular shmoes. Afterwards we discussed strategy for another visit. Skip the pickle chips to make room for dessert? But they're so good! We decided that the right way to do it is the same way to attack a churrascaria -- don't eat anything else before going. Then, call robo-rooter to come clean out your arteries and/or die happy.

Service was awesome! We shared a sampler plate on our waitresses suggestion with mixed reviews. I am not a huge brisket fan but their brisket was our favorite thing, it was amazing! The pulled pork was a little mushy but had good flavor. The chicken was good but we didn't pick up a lot of smokiness. The ribs were overcooked and a little dry. We would give this another try if we are ever in the area. One off putting thing for me was walking out of the restaurant through a group of smokers... not the right kind of smoke to end my meal with.

  • Roger R.

The food was decent--nothing special but also not bad. The pulled chicken sandwich was OK, though I'd pass on the Velveeta slices next time. My wife was very impressed with the pulled pork in the potato skins. Grandma was underwhelmed with the ribs; she thought they were overcooked. The place was extremely busy, and apparently you should call ahead for reservations if you're coming on Saturday. We were told this was because they had a live band. (This was my first time, so I don't know if this is typical or not for this place.) This seems to be a place for locals. Everyone seemed to know everyone else in the place, and there were lots of very loud conversations happening between tables. I'd say you should give it a try if you're in the area, but I wouldn't make a special trip out here.

Bone Heads, formerly known as the Pickle Barrel, is "the treasure of Willis." It came under new management in March 2009. They promise friendly neighbors, ghosts and trains rushing by on the tracks just a couple hundred feet away from the building. We didn't see ghosts, but the staff was friendly and we did have a train rock the building as it went by. We had never visited the Pickle Barrel, but they claim to have retained much of the same menu. The dill pickle chips for appetizers were extremely addictive. The riblet appetizers were very good. The house-made BBQ sauce was worth returning for. The number of riblets was amazing for just an appetizer! They were a meal in itself. And at $7.99, a pretty solid value. The macaroni and cheese was extremely good. I'd also recommend the pulled pork sandwich, but be sure to ask for an extra side of sauce. It's a little too thin on sauce for my tastes. The fries leave a lot to be desired. They're obviously from a big bag of frozen fries. Overall the meal was very good. We will definitely be returning to try other options on the menu in the near future. The bar was empty when we were there, and is a little small, but looks like a great place to hang out and meet with friends. They even have on HD TV on the wall. (But it wasn't tuned to the Tigers game which was in progress.) The extremely tiny town of Willis was founded in 1886, and they claim the building was built in 1865. It has an extensive history as a restaurant. The town is so small that signs for other businesses are hand-painted, and roads that off-shoot main street are dirt. Very quaint, and very good food.

In an attempt to avoid pre-game frenzy in both Ypsilanti & Ann Arbor (head to head in football) we ventured to Willis to try something new and to avoid the crowds. The drive was lovely and the location is pleasingly remote. When we pulled up there was a nice mix of vehicles including a couple luxury vehicles and several motorcycles - so you know the food appeals to a variety of people. We started off with their special pulled-pork potato skins and wow - tasty. Others have mentioned the french onion soup and it's not to be missed. I got the beer battered fish which were tasty as well. My boyfriend liked the BBQ but wasn't overly impressed.. The service was off a bit - my soup came out after my entree and the waitress got the wrong order for my bf so he had to wait a bit before getting the correct meal. Overall though the vibe is old school and comfy and worth a visit.

I took James here to have a bit of artery clogging fun. Besides it is Valentine's weekend and I figured there would not be a wait in the sticks. I was right. They have numerous drink specials going before 7 which is nice. They also had nightly specials on food as well as a weekend special on both prime rib and a surf and turf combo. The surf and turf was a 9 oz ribeye with beer battered shrimp. I was going to get a half pound burger as they are supplied by Knight's and come with fun options for toppings. I was lured though by their deal on fish and chips, three pieces with fries and the ubiquitous cole slaw for 8.99. The fish was meaty and in a perfect beer batter. Crunchy and not greasy. The tartar was a bit thick but tasted fine. I still went with a bit of malt vinegar instead as it hit my taste buds and cut down a bit on the heavy feel. The fries were fine but I hate the off brand ketchup myself, more malt vinegar worked better for me. The coleslaw was the same meh as last time. My husband was all over the ribeye and shrimp. The ribeye was obviously marinated and grilled. It had distinctive woodsmoke flavors and was incredibly juicy as it was well marbled. It smelled so incredible and tasted really damn good. It was a smaller cut than the one they regularly feature but it was plenty for my husband and he even gave me a few bites. The shrimp were tender and large, again that beer batter gave them great crunch. His starter salad was standard, his picked side of mac and cheese was cavatappi and a more subtle cheese mix. We shared a skillet cookie for dessert, the cookie was quite good but I was sad they use very generic vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce on it. They could definitely kick it up a couple notches. I will be back for sure and I will try that burger, several people got them near us and they looked really good.

We ate @ the Pickle Barrel occasionally, but have migrated over to Boneheads with the new owners. We have always found the food very good to excellent. Our waitstaff has always been friendly and courteous. One of my personal faves is their incredibly delicious french onion soup; hearty, brothy, flavorful, & smothered in cheese. A must order & some of the best I have ever enjoyed. The Trotter is a wonderful piece of beef cooked to order and presented delightfully & tastes exquisite. Do not be afraid to order the BBQ Sunday, a delicious blend of pulled pork, spicy beans, & mashed potatoes. Yum! Today was Father's Day & my son recommended Boneheads for dinner. The 3 of us answered the bell & gladly found seating inside. My son & I ordered the ribeyes (mine included the shrimp, but he opted for the french onion soup) & Pam ordered the Bonehead Platter with chicken, beef brisket, pulled pork, & ribs. The homemade coleslaw was incredibly good & fresh. Kelly was our waitperson & extremely attentive & outgoing. The ribeyes were awesome - cooked to medium rare perfection. A well marbled & delicious 16 oz. cut of beef that we were unable to completely finish at the restaurant, but travelled home with us as a doggie bag treat, Pam also was unable to finish all her plate offered her & joined the styrofoam brigade. Co-owner Niki greeted us as we were leaving & thanked us for choosing Boneheads. We assured her that we would return frequently & tell many others how wonderful their atmosphere, food, & service are to complete a wonderful meal & outing.

Just love the atmosphere in this place! The staff is so friendly especially Chris the bartender! The food is delicious, except I usually get the pulled chicken bbq sandwich and end up eating it with my fork because it's too much to pick up with my hands :)

We come here at least 2 times a month. Best out of the way BBQ in the area. I gave up my Lenten promise (gave up meat) this year because of Boneheads! It was worth it!!! Best sin I ever committed. Well....one of the best. :) I have yet to find a BBQ place within a 100 mile radius that can even come close to the service, and quality food here at Boneheads. We are even thinking of using this place for our wedding rehearsal dinner :) Try it! You will not be disappointed.

Ate here after a couple of recommendations from friends, plus it was near where I lived. Pickle chips were pretty good, but wished the pickle was sliced a tad thicker. Had the half BBQ chicken and a side of ribs. Ribs were REALLY fatty, almost to the point of being inedible. Chicken was moist and had plenty of sauce. "Loaded" baked potato was light on toppings. Side portions of coleslaw and baked beans were tasty, but would have liked more on my plate. Corn bread was more like corn muffin. Too moist and cakey. Overall, not bad. Good portion to price ratio. Was too full to eat dessert. Maybe next time. For every good thing I ate, there was something else that took away from the goodness with negativity.

When the new owners bought the place I was hesitant on the name... Still don't care for it because it doesn't match the decor... But! I'm glad they kept the decor and the pickle chips :) best pickle chips EVER. Nice that they have entertainment... I love that it's close to my mom's and they offer fantastic food away from the cliche of A2, etc. Great BBQ, etc. take the trip!

I have been coming to Bone Heads since they first opened. We have probably gone a dozen times or so. Since the very beginning the food has always been top notch. If you like BBQ this is the best place for it. We always get the pickle chips for an appetizer. My husband and I really enjoy the clam chowder as well. My husband has had the Ribs and Brisket and said both are out of this world. I usually will stick with the pulled pork sandwich. Always good and never a let down. I did try the Salmon one time. It was okay but nothing I would recommend on getting again. I have to say that the food has always been great. BUT, I have to be honest in saying in the past 6 months they have had a change over in staff. The waitress's' are not very good. I was in over the past weekend and our waitress took our order and then we never saw or heard from her again until she brought the bill. We actually had to "flag" down the hostess due to wanting something more to drink and that our meals were actually missing their sides. Its really a bummer to not enjoy going in their like we used to.I am sure we will go back in a few moths to try out the service again but I am not in any hurry. Even though the food is good you have to have a great staff as well...

We were driving North on US23 when my BDGF said "I am starving. Let us eat." As luck would have it, that was just as I saw a sign that said "Bone Heads BBQ. Five miles that way." So we took a chance. And we were immediately glad we did. The place is in the middle of nowhere, but quirky and friendly as the best of such places tend to be. The food was well above most Michigan BBQ I've had - especially the beans. Not since Texas have I had better beans. They also have Michigan beer on tap, which to me goes a long way in saying, "We're here for you, Tyler B." So take a chance, it's worth the drive out to the sticks.

I live between Willis and Detroit, and have trouble choosing between Boneheads and Slows in their respective cities. I prefer the ribs at Boneheads. The pickle chips are a quirky, good appetizer, and all the meat is fantastic-you can't go wrong. The draft beer selection is short but sweet. I've tried Boneheads maybe 5 times since moving to the area, and they have exceeded my expectation every time. It's a good family sit down atmosphere, with wooden chairs and tables, plus a bar at one end with tv's. This place puts Willis on the map.

August 16, 2011 update on Bone Heads ribs. Did it - Do it, they were fall off the bone tender, a nice smoky BBQ taste as required and a very slight back of the throat heat. Now keep in mind I really prefer a little more heat but for up here they were as close as I have had to real down south ribs. I ordered a half rack as a start and my test and the regret was it should have been a whole rack so some could have gone home with me. The logic here is start with the full and ask for extra hot BBQ sauce on the side so the experience is complete. To all you fish lovers (me included) Lynn had the Friday night fish and trying not to become a party pooper "this is a BBQ place and NOT a fish joint" they missed on this one with it being just a notch below even standard fare and not what was the old Pickle Barrel serving / taste. Our granddaughter had a BBQ burger and loved it so the burgers stand up once again and the beer was cold. Jack and Lynn

I ordered a 1/2 slab carry out, picklechips and tried but they were out of mac and cheeze. at 2 pm. It took about 10 minutes. 1) no cutlery or napkins in the carry out bag 2) this is a very salt laden carry out meal, the pickle chips were salty. 3) the ribs didn't quite fall off the bone, but thats ok , they were tender enough...but the rub they use must contain a bit of sodium based seasons , I could taste the granular texture of the rub and it was salty. (probably the saltiest rubs I've had on ribs). So be prepared to drink. I was driving so I wasn't drinking. Sides, it came with a baked tato and beans....the beans side was...just barely larger than a thimble... well let's say a very small portion. the tato was fine normalish in size and OK. comes with butter. but no fork to eat anything with luckily I keep my own stash in the car.. I'd maybe go back again, it came to just over 20 plus a 2 buck c/o tip. but I'd go on wed when a full slab o ribs is the price of a 1/2(dine in only), not order the pickle chips and throw that money into alcohol.

We went here for the first time last Saturday for dinner. It was awesome!! They even have Michigan beer on tap!!! My boyfriend said he thinks it's the best BBQ he has had in the State of Michigan! We are going back this Saturday and taking my parents and my grandma, to celebrate my mom's retirement!

Great!! I've been to this place about 4 times now (going again this weekend) and the food is awesome! Really unique (the BBQ sundae is amazing as is the French onion soup) and the staff and owners are so nice. We had a surprise bday party here for my sister in Decemeber and Nikki (the owner) went out of her way to decorate and set up the porch/private room for us. It was beautiful. Everyone in our party raved about the place. Entertainment there is always alot of fun too. Recommend!

This place rocks! Good BBQ food, cold beer, and friendly waitresses. My wife and I have ate here several times, always had a positive dinning experience. This is a nice change of pace place.

The Bo & I were craving some BBQ, but did not want to travel far from Ann Arbor. Of course I had to get some help from my fellow Yelpers to decide where to go. A quick search and I chose to drive 20 minutes out to Bone Heads BBQ. The restaurant was very busy for dinner time and all the tables were full, so we decided to sit at the bar closest to a Keno machine?! I ordered a tequila sunrise to start off, and it was tasty, but there was a stench of something that I couldn't stop noticing. I think it was maybe moisture from the carpets behind the bar? Just a fair warning that if you would be the type to notice that, then just wait for a table. On to the food! I got the Bone Heads BBQ platter ($20) and the Bo got a pulled chicken sandwich. He really liked his sandwich very much and thought it was even better than the pulled pork that came with the platter. Unlike me, he likes pulled pork, but thought the texture of this pulled pork was a bit mushy. The ribs also had some good seasonings on it, but I just wished it was more tender. The brisket was also good, definitely better than most BBQ places I have been, but that doesn't say much since I've only been to a handful of BBQ joints. The best thing here would have to be the baked beans, and this says A LOT since I am not a huge lover of beans in general, but damn were these beans delicious! I only got a small sampling with the platter, so I suggest ordering extra! Don't forget to ask for the hot sauce! It's actually spicy and also flavorful! Good food and even more interesting is the history of the building...it's haunted!?! If you want to live out your Ghost Adventures dream and get some good food while your at it, then this place is definitely where you need to be!

*Update: After coming here on several occasions for carry out, I decided to take 2 stars off. The reason for this is because the consistency on the food isn't always spot on. We were driving on 94 and saw a giant billboard for this place. I figured if they could afford the billboard, they must be kind of a big deal or something. We arrived and placed an order to go. For the appetizer, we ordered the Onion Ring Tower and the Fried Pickle Chips. For dinner, we ordered the Rib Tips Dinner that came with Cole slaw, corn bread, and a baked potato which I added the loaded version with butter, sour cream, bacon, scallions, and cheese. The loaded version costs $1.99 more. We also ordered the Beer Battered Walleye with cole slaw and sweet potato fries. The Onion Rings Tower were real onions cut up and battered. They stayed crispy the entire time until reheated. Even then, it was still very good. The Fried Pickle Chips were delicious and the batter was about the same as the onion rings. The Rip Tips Dinner was tender, and they fell off the bone pretty easily. The barbecue sauce that it was marinated in wasn't too strong but just perfect for my taste. The Loaded Baked Potato was as good as you can get. Their Cole slaw and Cornbread was okay. I usually don't like Cole slaw in general nor do I like Cornbread, but they both were fine to eat. I only tried a little bit of the Beer Battered Walleye and it was decent. My husband seemed to enjoy it. His Sweet Potato Fries were simple. The place wasn't too packed, but it had enough people going in and out of the place. Carry out was really fast and easy. I even bought a White Chocolate Skull Sucker for a dollar which is donated to charity. Everything we had seemed and tasted fresh. We will most likely return.

I am a classically trained chef who worked in the business for several years before changing careers and becoming a writer in the hi-tech field. Though I know alot about food and have many years of experience as a professional writer, tonight's dinner with me, my wife, and six other friends at Boneheads brings me to Yelp for my first restaurant review. Giving it two stars is being generous. The restaurant had been recommended by several people, so, even though it is located out in the sticks, we decided to give it a try. My wife had the Friday night Fish and Chips Special (which she said was very good), and I ordered the small (12 oz.) cut prime rib (with fries and upgrade to French Onion soup (which is supposed to be one of their specialties. The prime rib was cold and did not look very large. Even dipping it in the au jus that came with didn't help. And the onion soups flavourless broth was topped by some sort of chewy cheese that made it inedible to everyone who ordered it at our table. The only other items on our bill were a pickle chip appetizer and two soft drinks -- total bill for dinner for two (no alcohol ), $70.00 (with tip). I won't be going back.

I love this place. The ribs are excellent. Boneheads is about 30-45 minutes from my home, but worth the drive. The ribs are excellent. I've had the briscut, and it was a tad dry for me, but this seems to be the case wherever I go. The ribs are excellent. The sides are great as well. I love the collard greens. The ribs are excellent. The décor is pretty awesome, as well. Complete with 3 resident ghosts. The story on this is on their website. Just an all -around cool a$$ place. Have I mentioned that the ribs are excellent?

When binging on as many House of Cards episodes as we were, it was bound to happen. We needed RIBS. We did not want to travel to far and low and behold this place was just around the block! Reviews looked great so we drove on over to check it out. I have to admit that upon pulling into the gravel parking lot and meeting eyes with the local diners I thought that maybe this would be a bit different from what we are familiar. It was a Sunday night and the place was packed. We ordered the BBQ sampler and a full rack of ribs. Every side, piece of lettuce and slab of meat was fantastic. The ribs were seasoned with a dry rub and sauced just the right amount. The collard greens were spicy, savory and sweet. Not to mention these platters fed us for days. We will be going back again, just like everyone else.

Went there after the race. Serve was good. Had the fried pickle chips for an appetizer they were good. I split the sampler plate. The pulled pork and chicken was good. The beef brisket was ok but have had better.

Busy neighborhood type hang-out. Historic building was originally a train station. Service was efficient... A little too efficient! My husband's entree came to the table before we had finished our salads. My entree arrived about 5 minutes after his! My plate was covered in what the menu described as rice pilaf. It was just long grain rice with bits of carrot and a lot of pepper to spice it up. Everything was over seasoned with pepper and over cooked . In all fairness we did not order what they are famous for... BBQ and pulled pork. So if we ever go back it would be to give them a chance to prove their BBQ is worth the trip.

Stopped in last night as I was on that side of town for a change. The parking lot was pretty full, so I thought it had to be a good sign. This place is in the middle of NOWHERE. I can only imagine their business relies heavily on locals & bikers (as evidenced by the number of Harleys in the lot!). The service wasn;t that great. Rushed & impersonal. The place wasn't that busy inside, so I'm not sure where all the cars were from in the lot. The decor is very "Route 66" roadside diner-ish. Interesting, but certainly not imaginative or exciting. I ordered the "Combo" so I could sample a variety of their offerings. This consisted of 1/3 slab of ribs, 1/4 smoked chicken, pulled pork, & smoked brisket all glazed with their BBQ sauce. It came with cornbread, cole slaw, a small sampler of baked beans, & french fries. Yep, that ought to cover it... The side dishes were uninspired and just run of the mil. I got the feeling the baked beans could have been spectacular, but I only got about 2 spoonfuls so it was hard to tell. Skip the fries and go with one of their other offerings. Now for the BBQ. The brisket was OK, a little drier than I like, and not so tender. The ribs were OK, done just a tad past falling off the bone, but better than a lot of places in the area. The chicken was good, cooked well & not too much or too little. The puled pork was a pile of pulled pork. Who serves &/or eats just a pile of pork like this? That's like slamming down a ladle of spaghetti sauce on a plate & calling it a meal. Try including a bun, roll, etc. next time. Now for the whammy...the sauce. It's was lifeless & boring. I was prepared to be blown away, and I certainly was not. It was surprisingly dull & flavorless. I don't like a bold, overpowering sauce, but I like some flavor! I can;t say I'd go out of my way to go back to Boneheads, which I'd have to do considering it's location. For those with few choices, it's probably a hit.For the rest of us, it's just another bonehead concept.

I love this place. I might be biased because I live just 5 min north of it, and it is my de-facto-go-to BBQ place. I just love coming here on a summers evening, bringing family or friends and eating delicious BBQ. Have brought small groups out here and everyone left very happy, can honestly say that out of all the times I've been here, only once has it been unsatisfying due to our waiter being missing in action most of the night, and then apologizing for whatever caused it. Food was still good, but wait staff experiences will vary with each person. Drop on by Willis MI and get some BBQ here, you can't go wrong with it.

Yelped a place and found this one. Only four miles off the main drag- totally worth the drive! It was a Saturday night and they were packed and the service and food came out really quick. Awesome corn fritters, ribs and okay sides. Decent pricing for what we got- not super cheap but well worth it. Staff were so nice, happy and cute

This is a review I'm having quite a hard time with, but I guess it has to be completed... Well, here goes. Keep in mind, I've been I've been looking for a great BBQ place close to us for quite a while. Although I read a few mixed reviews, it was still a place I was really looking forward to going to eat at. Slow's and Red Smoke are in Downtown Detroit, Famous Dave's is "Chain BBQ" and I was looking for a nice hometown BBQ. Well, I was hoping to find it in Willis, Mi at Bonehead's, but I was really wasn't impressed by the food - unfortunately!! Keep in mind, I really wanted this place to be the bomb, but it just was a firecracker... When first walking into the place, we were greeting promptly and seated, we loved the decor. We sat on the dining side, not the bar side - that looked cool also. The waitress very promptly waited on us for drinks and appetizers, which we ordered the Pickle Barrel Famous Pickle Chips. They came out in a flash and both my wife and I liked them. Deep fried food always tastes good, right? LOL So far, so good. The waitress was on her A game, so not complaints about her at all, she was quick and always kept our drinks full. Next, the salads came out, my wife got a house salad and me, a caesar salad. Once again, hit the spot... I was excited as but now most places would of dropped something.. LOL So, here comes the meals... I ordered the Pulled Pork Dinner with baked beans and a side order of the Homemade Macaroni and Cheese. The pulled pork looked quite lonely without as much as a piece of texastoast under it... They also had some deepfried onion fries I guess you would call them on the plate also, which were good. I uploaded a pic, so take a look. I have made pulled pork for quite a few years now, and thought it tasted as they had made it early in the morning and kept it in a heating tray all day. It was so tender and the sauce was totally soaked in, it wasn't sloppy at all. It didn't taste bad, but I was hoping for a homerun instead of a double with this dish. I asked the waitress for more sauce, and then found out they only had a honey and a hot sauce. Both were good, but you need to have a few more flavors for us BBQ peeps in my honest opinion. I think to be fair, the pulled pork rates about 3 stars. The baked beans didn't have much taste at all. They too, were most likely in a crockpot or such, all day long. The beans basically melted in your mouth and were mostly mush. I thought they would have pork, brisket or something in them, but my portion had none. RedSmoke - If you need a baked bean recipe, let me know!! They cornbread was was very good but the Mac and Chesse was a huge disappointment in my book as I really wanted them to be comparable to Red Smoke or Slow's. NO WAY! The three cheeses melted altogether into a mediocre white colored mac and chesse with hardly any taste. My advice, look into changing at least one of the chesse's to give it more flavor. Since mine is so long, I'm gonna cut short on my wifes, she didn't like hers. She got the BBQ Chicken with mixed veggies. The veggies were definately frozen and out of the bag and overcooked. The chicken was dry inside and needed alot of sauce to go down... Like I said, the service and atmosphere made up 2 of the stars in this review, now if the food could catch up!! We will be trying it again in the future, maybe it will be better. I think it has promise, but there are changes that need to be made.... Service and atmosphere - 2 Stars Food - 1 Star

Good place to eat. Quaint restaurant, in a quaint town. Good seating and I had good service. Good ribs for this area and not very expensive. Other dishes such as wings are also good. The pickles are something special and deserve the kudos in other reviews. I like to cook and I have not been able to duplicate their taste. I like Memphis style ribs and they don't quite compare but to me, Memphis is my basis for comparison for all BBQ style. This is a nice place to go and have a family dinner or if you don't feel like going out, Boneheads has pick-up orders. Nice option. I recommend Bonehead's.

I love this place! It's located in a remote area that you wouldn't think you would find a place like this. If you like barbecue then get the barbecue sunday! Bring an appetite or share with a friend as this was too large for me to eat alone....I would guess most guys would not have a problem though. The restaurant has a great atomosphere and food is great. Don't forget to try the pickle chips!! YUMMY!!

I highly recommend this business. I went there yesterday. Hubby and I had a burger, barbequed chicken, pickle chips. The burger was way way big, done right and had a good taste. Pickle chips were fun, had great flavor and different. The barbeque sauce was yummy on the chicken. I will be visiting again!!

Can't comment on the food, although it smelled delicious. We walked in on a busy Saturday afternoon without reservations. No one approached us about a table, so I approached a lady who appeared to be employed there, whether or not we should seat ourselves. She looked at me like I was the town idiot and was putting her out, before she asked how many and then told us it would be about 25 minutes. Fine-we get it it's busy, however about 2 minutes later a party of 3 arrived with no reservations, and she seated them immediately. Rude. The Twisted Rooster in Belleville turned out to be a much better choice. They seemed happy to see us and our potential monies. Coincidently, we saw another family going in to the Bone Head BBQ as we were leaving, and while we were waiting for our table at the Twisted Rooster they walked in. I asked her how they were treated at the first place, and they had gotten crap treatment as well.

Great local BBQ. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because, even though it's great for here-it doesn't compare to the BBQ I've had in the south. Love the old fashioned ambiance. Mac and cheese is fantastical, and a few good seasonal brews on tap. Affordable place for a hungry family to feast, and a neat little place to bring out of town guests. Never disappoints!

My friend lives 5 minutes from here. This is probably my first time in a town this rural. We spent a good 10 minutes driving on a gravel road without seeing anyone in sight. I felt there is only 1 or 2 restaurants in this small town. We arrived around 3pm after a day of canoeing and kayaking. We got an order of pickle fries with a side of ranch dressing. These were really good. It is perfect for 4 to share. I love how the pickles are slicked thin and the sour-ness goes well with the batter. The ranch sauce was cool. I am not a huge fan of American food but this place is pretty good. I got the BBQ globet- It looks like it would be dessert but it was Beans with colesaw or garlic mash potatoes topped with a slightly spicy pulled pork for about $8.39. Good deal. I don't like beans so I replaced it with more mash potatoes. It also comes with corn bread. After the pickled fries I was slightly full so I just ate half of the pulled pork and corn bread and some mash potatoes. The mash potatoes were REALLY soft and creamy. Good! I look forward to eating it tonight for dinner. The bathroom was clean and had about 3-4 stalls. It is a bit confusing as I almost went into the men's bathroom so be careful. The waitress was nice and was good at her job. I probably won't be coming back since it is a bit out in the middle of nowhere but if I ever happen to be in the town I would like to go back for more pickle fries. Yum Yum!

I am a French onion soup junkie, and Boneheads' is some of the best around. The pulled pork is great, and the ribs are very good. One of my favorite things at Boneheads is the cornbread- so good!! I have never had any issues with the service. I did get carry out the other day and they did not give me the cole slaw or the cornbread that was included with the meal, and that is disappointing when paying $20 for an entree.

This is another restaurant on the fence between a 3 and 4 star for me. I would like to try a few more dishes in the future to be sure. Some of the highlights: The location is neat. I love the country cross-roads where the restaurant is located. Being relatively close to the metro area - this sort of takes you away from it all for a minute. I like the elder building setting and the history behind the location. All very intriguing. The inside has a very rustic feel and it is definitely a small town kind of place. I had the pulled pork BBQ sandwich and the brisket on separate occasions. The food was tasty and had a decent flavor to it. The pickle chip appetizer (a notable favorite to those initially prompting me to visit) was a nice start as well, Beans are reallly really good. Mac N Cheese was tasty and seemed homemade. The owners were present on our first visit and they were very interested in us as customers. Caring. Wanted to make sure we felt welcomed. They took the time to talk with us and give us the background on the restaurant. All very inviting Prices are average for what you would expect. Being critical: One thing I have noticed both times I was there is the service is rather spotty. It took a long time to have anyone acknowledge us to start - and that was simply to get a drink order started. They have a lot of young waitresses who just seem aloof at staying on top of everything. Our first visit - we actually had one of the cooks get us started with our pitcher of beer after sitting there for so long. Probably not what you are paying him for..... Although the food is good and worth the visit - I can't say it is spectacular (as friends had stated - and which lured me to start). I was just not blown away either time I have dined to date. That is not to say it isn't a good meal - I'm just not seeing the "rah rah" behind it. Further - they only have one type of BBQ sauce (that I have understood / could tell) and it is average to me. Nothing I need to rush home and tell others about. The portions are bit skimpy - particularly side items. You get a small tartar sauce cup size and eat them in just a few bites. Last - the first time we dined they had their radio on and it was upbeat and good music. Until the CD (or whatever it was) began skipping......and skipping......and stayed skipping..........and no one did anything...............and it kept skipping.......on and on. I wanted to beat my head into a wall. Must have been 20 minutes (not joking) and finally one of the waitresses awoke to the problem. ??? The next time through - it was about as quiet as could be in there. Felt almost dead. They had some college games on - but the TV's were hard to see, no volume, etc. It is like this place has a hard time identifying as a bar vs. being a restaurant and the environment just can't quite find itself. I know it is minor - but sometimes you go out to eat as much for the atmosphere as you do the food. Overall - this is another place I hope will continue to thrive and I truly want to like. I guess I am just not completely sold at this point.

The best BBQ in Ann Arbor might be ... 15 miles to the southeast in Willis. My husband and I stopped in for dinner for the first time tonight, and we are already big fans. The food is great, reasonably priced, and the service is friendly. My husband got the ribs platter and I ordered the BBQ salad, with pulled chicken on top. His meal came with coleslaw, a very small side of baked beans, and garlic mashed potatoes, and he ordered a side of mac and cheese. My salad was essentially a garden salad with black beans and corn, cheese and tortilla strips, and came with a homemade BBQ ranch dressing. The honey BBQ sauce was outstanding - my husband normally doesn't like sweet sauces, and he loved this. The nice thing about the menu, too, is that they do offer non-BBQ foods, likes burgers made with Knight's meat and steaks, so you aren't limited to smoked meats. We'll definitely be back! You should check it out too!

The food is good but the service is terrible. The bar maid "took care" of us from her assignment of giggling it up in the bar as we sat in the dining room section. There was another server for the dining room but we were assigned the classic bar maid. I finally had to take the check to the bar to pay as she was busy entertaining. The check is all that arrived promptly.

Had the Boneheads BBQ combo, that comes with ribs, chicken, pulled pork and beef brisket. I will have to say the meats were nicely cooked, except for the pulled pork that was a little bit mushy. The menu says they smoke the meats, but I could not really taste any smoke flavor or verify a smoke ring on the meats. I still thought it was pretty tasty though. The dinner came with coleslaw, a sample of baked beans, cornbread and a choice of another side. The sides were all good. Did not really care for the BBQ sauce, to sweet and molasses flavored for me, reminded me of a commercial sauce. All in all I would return if I was ever in the area again.

I am not an expert on BBQ but I know what I like. This place is out in the sticks between Milan and Belleville. The food was good, the service at the bar was excellent. Samantha and Emily proved to be very crafty behind the bar. Pours were good and prices were fair. There are better BBQ places in Toledo and A2, but around these parts this place does just fine. Very Busy for a Thursday evening. The decor inside is very old school cool. There was a "copy" of a "License for Prostitution" issued to some gal named Rose, framed in the mens bathroom signed by Marshall Virgil EARP dated 1881 at Tombstone, Arizona Territory. We had Beef Brisket, Steak and Shrimp Scampi, Collared Greens, Baked Beans, Mac and Cheese, and Cajun French Fries. ... with Red Stag by Jim Beam because I finished up their Yukon Jack. Yum. Dont expect a cell signal in here due to the old tin ceilings. Wifi was not working good this night. Thats all folks.

We wanted to get together with some friends and none of us had been to Bone Heads yet, so this was my first visit. Bone Heads is in the tiny town of Willis, occupying a turn of the century house. A skull holding salt and pepper shakers graces the hutch near the front door. Bikers park right in front, away from the cars, where they can keep an eye on things through the front window. Even though each table was filled with conversing diners, we could still hear each other because the sound didn't bounce around mercilessly. On to the menu! We started out with the catfish and fried pickle appetizers. The catfish was a bit salty. but had a creamy sauce and came out to us very quickly. The fried pickles were a bit sour in my opinion, but each cook has different ideas, right? I got the pulled pork for my entree. Tender, juicy, and plenty for me. I ate all of my sides (baked beans, cole slaw and corn bread) and brought the rest of my juicy pork home for another meal. Hubby got the Bone Heads Combo: ribs, chicken, pulled pork & brisket. Yep. He'd be taking a lot of that home. We got two more meals out of our combined leftovers. Gives me a break from cooking. I was full, but not too full to try a few small bites of the cheesecake hubby had ordered for dessert. Creamy! Be sure to read the back of the menu, which describes the local ghost. I would definitely go back again. Relaxing and fun place. I'm sure my rating will go up as I try more of the menu.

I thought we made a wrong turn and were headed into the middle of nowhere, but when we came over a rise in the road and saw a parking lot filled with cars, we had arrived. This place was steadily busy when we were there. Traffic was comprised of regulars and folks looking to try it for the first time. I hadn't planned on eating out, so had the bbq chicken salad. It was excellent, and still way more meal than I needed. The sauce on the chicken was so good that I couldn't resist eating it all. I didn't need to use much dressing because the salad contents and chicken were well balanced. My partner had a 1/2 chicken bbq dinner and loved it. He enjoyed the sides and the meal fulfilled his craving for a traditional bbq dinner. The price was good two full dinners for around $25, and the service was also good. I was impressed with service for how busy the place was. We'll definitely check it out again.

3.5 stars. Food was pretty good, but the service was kinda lacking...friendly but very slow. We seated ourselves and the waitress brought over our menus. I had to order the deep fried pickle chips. They were fried to perfection and despite being a tad salty, went well with the ranch dipping sauce. Got the pulled pork sandwich which came with home made potato chips. The pulled pork was good, just the right texture and moist. The potato chips were kinda hard, so maybe sub something else for the side... Also ordered the brisket, which came with cornbread and side(s), got baked beans. Also ordered an extra 1/4 rack of ribs. Yup, there were definitely leftovers. The brisket was kinda dry, definitely needed some sauce. Cornbread, ok. Baked beans, good. Ribs were different, didn't fall off the bone, but still good in its own way. I love the story behind this place though and how it's set up. Haunted or not, a decent option for lunch or dinner.

I came here with my family. It took me a long time to figure out what to say and how to write this review... considering that I love Michigan (my home state) and I love family-owned restaurants. Okay..so here it is in a nut shell, I guess it was my own fault.. that I ordered brisket. In my own pursuit of eating the best food throughout my travels, my personal opinion, I felt that the meat was extremely tough and tasted old. The meat was so tough, and brisket considering how it is made should melt in your mouth like silk ribbons. For a second opinion, I had my mum taste it as well... she agreed the meat tasted old. My father loves this place and it was a real treat to bring me here. However, I could not eat the rest of the meat. Sadly it laid wasted and he told me I could order something else, I declined :( I did like the sides I ordered. I ordered collard greens and potatoes. I also ordered their bread pudding with whiskey sauce, which after cooling down was very tasty. I will have to come back and eat one of their staples, perhaps my rating will change???

Service was extremely slow even for a Friday night. There were three tables of people who got their food before my friend and I and our orders were not complicated. My friend got the fish and chips and I got the pulled pork. Fish looked great, but would not get the pulled pork again. It was mediocre at best. I would recommend the fried pickles as an appetizer, but that's about it.
