Yummiest Mexican food in TC for sure. Always have to stop in either to dine in or to go. Friendly staff, awesome variety of food and salsas. Love it!

Not going to find more authentic Mexican. Steak and chicken tacos were incredible. Green salsa some of the tastiest I've ever had. I prefer thin chips but even their thick tortilla chips were good. Guacamole fantastic. Pork tacos only thing I didn't care for. Very affordable. Extremely friendly service. Smart choice for take out in vacation.

My friend and I came here on a whim. We were in the area and decided to try it out. I never heard of the place before. Parking lot was empty and that should've been our first hint to leave. So we got chips and salsa, only to find out later that they aren't free. What kind of Mexican restaurant doesn't have FREE chips and salsa?! Come on, now. The chips were terrible, stale and gross. I've had way better chips from the grocery store. The salsa didn't impress us either. Super salty and very strong garlic. I decided to get the enchiladas. The service was absolutely terrible. We waited for a good 45 minutes, and we were the ONLY customers there. We almost walked out. The enchiladas came with a side of rice and diarrhea - oh wait those are beans. The enchiladas were the worst thing I've ever had in my life. I couldn't even finish the meal. I even kept tasting it, hoping it would get better. It didn't. My friend's entree (which I can't remember what it is) wasn't too bad, but I still would never eat here again. Also, overpriced! I'm going to Agave instead.

Great food. Friendly staff. But don't be in a hurry. Only two other table tops and it took 50 minutes to get our order. Perhaps they were short handed tonight?

  • Brandon D.

Decent. Tamales could have had more moisture (sauce) and chorizo tacos were way too salty. Bummed.

Excellent !!!! Authentic. Loved the salsa bar where you could try everyone of the 10 flavors!!!

Some of the freshest, most authentic and delicious Mexican food I've ever had. And found outside Traverse City, of all places. My family and I made two trips there for dinner recently. Both were phenomenal. And we almost never even went there. The restaurant is a little rundown and cheesy looking from the outside. But because it was so packed all the time, we decided that maybe it was worth the trip. Biy were we right. I shared the taquiza with my brother. They say it feeds 4-5, but the two of us downed it and were very full afterwards. It's chicken, pork, steak, beans, rice, guacamole, pico de gallo and tortillas served family style. Another very popular dish was Alambre: beef, roasted pork, fred pork, onion, peppers and mushrooms with cheese melted on top. You scoop it up and put it in tortillas...delicious. The enchiladas were equally fantastic, and normally picky family members were seen cleaning their plates.

Super great food....amazing really is you like authentic Mexican. The only reason I rated 3 stars is because it is way too expensive. $11 plates that don't come with cheese or sour cream. You have to pay for most toppings like that. Feels cheap compared to other Mexican restaurants I've been to!

Authentic, healthy, delicious and priced right.

Everything I had here was top notch and delicious but what i want to specifically mention is their chips and salsa Verde. Holy cow! Hands down the best Verde I have ever had. Be sure to take home a tub and bag of chips when you are done stuffing your face. Yum!

The food is pretty authentic and is not a chain. The homemade salsas are the best. The food is slightly overpriced for what you get but thrn again it is a local place. The people are nice and they usually have a seat open.

Authentically not very good. The people praising this place as "authentic" have probably never travelled out of Michigan before. I myself have travelled extensively in Mexico and Central America, lived in the Southwest over 4 years and frequently dine in Southwest Detroit (where there are actual Mexicans cooking) and know what I'm talking about. Issues: Overpriced They offer chips & salsa then charge $$ you for them. Service poor (very rare for a Mexican place) Interior is cheap with flimsy tables & chairs packed close. "Barbacoa" only dry shredded beef, not authentic. "Carnitas" stale and spoiled tasting. "Menudo" ansolutely horrible- oily (!?!?) and so overcooked & old the sparse ingredients have been liquefied. Disgusting. My "authentic" opinion? Keep driving.

Very pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. The salsas, as mentioned in other reviews were very tasty. I had a chicken tamale . . very good, a lot of masa, but I like it. Others in our party had tacos, rice and beans and the guacamole was really good as well. Did not realize the chips and salsa were going to be charged to us .. . we may not have eaten as much . . the chips unique and flavorful. We have traveled a good deal, including colonial cities in Mexico, taking cooking classes, and live in a community where the 2nd in population is Mexican, and this food is as good as any we've had.

Seriously the best al pastor tacos I've ever ever had. But the best part of this entire operation is their incredibly fresh salsas.. about 6 varieties!

Great food, good prices and very friendly staff. Whether we dine in or get Togo, we are always satisfied!

Hands down best authentic Mexican food in northern MI. Great service and awesome food. We will definitely be back every time we get to traverse city.

  • Laura K.

Still the best Mexican north of Saginaw. I'm pretty much set with two tinga and two chorizo tacos. Oh and at least two tubs of salsa, one red and one green. This place makes me realize how much flavor I'm missing out on all winter down state.

Great food as usual, but the experience was kind of ruined by a bad waitress. 50+ white lady. She messed up something on everyone's order, and took way too long to get everything out. She would bring out parts of orders without tortillas, so the food would sit there getting cold while you waited to be able to eat it. Forgot rice and beans. We were a party of 5 and 3 of us were done by the time the last person was served their meal. I would get carryout next time, or make sure you have one the owners/family members serving you, they always do a great job.

My favorite restaurant ever! Authentic Mexican tacos that are delicious. The lady at the counter was very nice and our food was served quickly. Best guacamole in town. This is my go-to place for my birthday and special occasions. Take out is great, too.

Swung by here on our way out of town after a terrific massage across the street at the Grand Traverse Resort. Grabbed the torta, which could have used less mayo and more spice/acidity to balance out the rich flavors. Good sandwich. Chips and salsa were a tasty starter, especially the green. Had a bite of the wife's tamale which was moist, flavorful and straight up tasty. A nice, authentic Mexican place.

Supremely friendly staff and very patient and helpful when I was asking questions about the salsas & ingredients/ presentation of different dishes! Great variety of options and thus far everything I've ordered has been delicious! They give you good-sized portions and lots of extras, like sauces and tortillas! The Chips and salsa at the front are great for tasting to see which one you want to order! The food comes out quickly too! It's a great place for dinner or carry out!!

Moving from Grand Rapids and leaving the many many options for authentic tacos was extremely difficult. But I have found my new home for great authentic Mexican. Super friendly. Great food. Great atmosphere. We can't wait to go back.

We were recently vacationing in the Traverse City area. Although one of our intended goals was hitting some of the trendier restaurants in town, we noticed this little place near our hotel when we arrived and said, "Hey -- let's check it out." We wound up eating here three times, AND taking home a cooler of salsas and entrees. The owner-chef is from Oaxaca, and the food is delightfully different than the typical Tex-Mex we're used to in Michigan; the flavors are more nuanced, more citrusy, less fiery for heat's sake. Every single meal we had was wonderful. We loved the mole'; we loved the barbacoa; we loved our breakfast huevos rancheros and chorizo and-potatoes. (Hint: One of these breakfasts is big enough for two people.) If you don't take my word for the deliciousness of the food-- Rick Bayless and Mario Batali are both fans. And the best part of it is -- this restaurant is accessible to all -- everyone from the people who work in the nearby cherry fields to commuters catching a quick to-go meal to dedicated foodies. A must-visit if you're in town.

Best meal in Traverse City! We tried the trendy restaurants downtown and were disappointed, only to stumble on Osorio. This was the tastiest meal hands down! The decor is traditional grungy Mexican restaurant, but the amazing salsa with the chips set the tone. The chile rellenos was a little heavy on cheese, but putting some of the pepper with beans, rice and salsa in the warm corn tortilla - heaven!! We'll definitely be back.

  • Mariya S.

The Best AUTHENTIC food I have had since being in Mexico!! The place doesn't look like much, but it's deceiving ! Gotta eat here! We will be back for sure! You can also choose between yellow or white corn tortillas! Wonderful, friendly and family owned!

  • David L.

This is the place for authentic Mexican in Traverse City area! Not fancy, but really good. Salsas run from mild to hot and are great. Food is the highlight every time that I come in. Never been disappointed. Looking forward to my next visit already. Enjoy!

  • Jessica P.

The only reason this is 4 stars instead if five is the amount of time for food. But, the food is excellent! I've gone back a couple times and tried different entrees and apps each time and have never been disappointed. Their homemade salsa is superb!! They are right across the street from Bravo Zulu so you can take the food to-go and eat it there while having a beer!!

  • Jacqueline C.

The salsa is a treat. I wouldn't go without getting guacamole for the chips. They have a very tasty carne asada taco that does not disappoint. Authentic not big on ambience...but I think these places are better

Great place that I was skeptical of on driving up. We pulled into the parking lot and neither my wife nor I was excited about going in. We saw the positive Yelp reviews though and decided to walk in anyway. The place was empty, but once we were seated by the woman behind the counter, we knew the experience would be worth the visit. She was super friendly, the food was really great (my wife had the quesadilla, I had tacos), and the chips and salsas were amongst the best we've ever had. A nondescript place a little off the main drag in Traverse... worth the visit for some amazing Mexican food. Do it.

The tacos, mole enchiladas and salsa were amazingly delicious. I'm a huge mole fan and theirs is awesome. The tamales were just ok.

Amazing Authentic Mexican. So far everything we've had is great. Especially love the tacos

Great enchilada's. The hot salsa was really hot, the medium quite runny and the verde was excellent. Service was very in attentive.

Wow! What a surprise and treat this stop was. It's so nice to get "real" homemade food at. Restaurant. This was the most unique Mexican food I have had anywhere.

Great food and fun atmosphere, the owner came out and explained all the different dishes we tried to our children.

  • Clark G.

Is this one of the best meals in Traverse City? Yes, yes it is. Get the taquiza. Does it feed 4-5, like the menu claims? Nope. It'll feed two hungry individuals, and it'll make them very happy that they ordered it.

  • Christopher W.

Wow--we were blown away! Friendly staff and excellent Mexican Food. Tacos were delicious, and the salsas are amazing!

  • Laura N.

I love all of the salsa options, I went for the 4 tacos and was very pleased with my selection. The side of chopped onions were perfect, my only suggestion would be to add more lime. It was hard to spread one little slice over four tacos. Everything was delicious either way, would highly recommend this place!

  • Peggy R.

The fish tacos, which they only have on Fridays were very good. The enchiladas were okay too. Not bowled over and we always get annoyed when we are charged for chips and salsa. The salsas were good and their hot is HOT :) Prices are a little high. Our service was very good. The people were very nice and if we lived here would might go back. Rice on the enchilada plate was good, beans were mostly broth.

Best authentic Mexican food I have had in a long long time. Chips and salsa are to die for.

I love this little hole in the wall that serves true authentic tacos. The place is small and simple but the staff is truly gracious and welcoming. The true find here is the wonderful salsa's and traditional dishes. The place is a little expensive as others have mention and I did find that portion sizes were a little small especially with the beef tongue tacos. I wish they would give more condiments on the side such as chopped tomatoes, onions, cilantro, slices of lime as other real traditional Taquerías. Although there were some things I would like to see implemented like the condiments I think this little taco hut is a must if your in the area for quick getaway to Mexico.

I just ordered a place of rice and beans as a main dish. First, it took forever (they were busy and only had one overworked waitress) then it contained maybe 4 tablespoons of rice and the same of beans. Honest. I don't believe in having wastefully gigantic portions, but this was pretty ridiculous. Food seems authentic enough but overpriced for what you get.

Visiting friends in Rapid City and had a craving for Mexican. We are from the East coast so what a surprise when we had a delicious lunch here. The tomatillo and avocado salsa served with the chips was so good as was the salsa. We were 4 and one had tacos, one had fish tacos and two of us had the corn tamales with avocado on top (can't remember the name of the dish) but it was delicious. Also had a side of rice and beans, a little bland, but everything else made up for it. Would definitely visit again!

Great little gem. We thought the salsa are great and the chips hearty. The quality of the meal and service were very good. I think the prices are very reasonable for the quality. I am taking some salsa home with me.

Just like the Taqueria, very authentic Mexican (Mexican) food. The same cook from Taqueria, same beans and rice. The entire menu is excellent, my kids love the Limon-Lime and they still have Menudo on the weekends. Soccer is always blasting in Spanish on the TV. Highly recommend for casual night out.

  • Kendra L.

As I have stated in many previous reviews, I am a Mexican food snob. That being said, I would have given them a 5 star review had it not been for their prices. The food was PHENOMENAL!!! The prices were, however, not. I don't mind paying for really good food, but come on...$8 for 4 tacos without beans and rice? Really? I know why the prices are so high, though. They have no competition. This is not your chain restaurant. This is real Mexican food. Even with the high prices, I would return.

Wonderful tacos and great homemade salsas! Great Mexican for Northern Michigan. would give it 5 stars, but its just a tad too expensive. Id love to see a more ala carte menu so you could build different meals. Example Tacos are only available in orders of 4. and $9 is a lot for a order of tacos. Reminds me of the many great taco places in a urban area, like Chicago. A great fill in for my times in between trips to the big city.

This is one of the best authentic Mexican restaurants you will find and they have picked right back up where they left off at Taqueria Margarita. Great tacos, great service, and a very warm atmosphere, as Miguel and his wife have always provided. Will definitely be back again the next time I'm up north!

    (5)
  • Sarah C.

We had high hopes for this place as we loved Taqueria Margarita, but sadly it didn't meet our expectations. We ordered chips and salsa (not free, but I don't mind paying for it if they're good), and the red salsa that came out first was way too salty. We then asked for the green salsa, and they promptly brought that out, but it was too thick and didn't have a nice flavor. Oh, and the chips were awful. I don't know what the deal was, but they tasted very dry (almost like they were baked rather than fried) and didn't have a nice flavor. For the meal we had steak and roasted pork tacos which were just ok. I'm not sure if our tastes have changed in the last couple of years or what (likely since we eat much higher quality food these days than we ever did before), but it just wasn't a place we feel the need to go back to. It probably doesn't help that we've become addicted to the salsa verde and tamales from Spanglish so it's pretty difficult to find Mexican food as good as theirs. Hopefully others will enjoy this restaurant though because the staff was very friendly and I'd like for them to do well!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
