Pretty solid Thai food. I agree that it's excellent, but I would not necessarily call it the best Thai food ever - not even in the Detroit area. Have lived in NYC & eaten Thai all over the US. Had what they called Gai Koa, which I believe is generally chicken and rice in the Thai street food. No matter. Here they differentiate between Pad Thai as thin rice noodles which are NOT done in a wok, and their Gai Koa is wide noodles, done in a wok, with basically the same sauce treatment. Delish! I won't mention the name of the metro area Thai place that I think is better, because I don't mean to denigrate Penn's Thai, which is close to my Troy office, and the one particular place I prefer is not in the area. I DO wish I had thought to order a cup of tom yum soup (again, I THINK they serve tom yum - they list only "hot & sour" on their menu), since so many other Yelpers indicate how much they love the soup here and the fact that it's included if you dine in. Wonder if they'd consider offering it to those waiting for take-out? I'll be back!

Pretty solid Thai food. I am not sure if I would make this place my go to for Thai as I have a place right across the street from my office that I like just as much if not slightly better, but I wouldn't be opposed to eating here. I do like the fact they give you a complimentary cup of Hot and Sour Soup with your lunch that my other place doesn't do so they got that going for them. Also when it comes to spice they are pretty true to their temperatures. Hot was hot while I have seen places where Hot is more like Medium or in other cases Hot Plus. Timmy likes his Thai spicy, but I also like to know what I am getting myself in to and don't like surprises. The Pad Thai I had was good, but as Holly S. pointed out they use frozen veggies in place of fresh ones. This was pretty apparent in both taste and look. It's not like they were freezer burnt or anything, they tasted just fine. You can just tell they are trying to cut corners either with prep time, cost or both. The place is on the smaller size and I find it funny that the tables they use for their booths are from Joe's Crab Shack. When I saw that it gave me a chuckle. As they say one mans trash is another mans treasure I suppose.

It helps when you have a Thai Restaurant close by but when you have two, it's even better. Every time we get carryout or dine it, it is so delicious. I would recommend dining in because you get the soup and shrimp chips. YUM!

Great Thai place!! We recently moved from Los Angeles to the Midwest and were in the Troy area for work and we miss good Thai food. The service was fast and courteous! Spicy Thai noodle dish was spicy and delicious! Almost like our LA place! The wonton soup was also homemade and fresh! Highly recommend!

This is one of restaurants that make people afraid to go in at first when they see the outside. They do need to improve their restaurant decorations. The food is excellent here. Full of flavors and just the way thai food should be made. They would served you free shrimp chips which is good. I ordered massaman curry with chicken, spice level hot. The flavor is really delicious. The potatoes are soft and marinated well. The chicken is fresh and tender. I also ordered Tom Yum soup with chicken. The soup base is at the right sourness level and the flavor is really balanced and delicious. Overall, the service is good and the food is great!!! I will be back regularly!!!

Atmosphere is nothing special, but by far the best Thai food in SE Michigan. All the "safe" things that other places do okay, this place does great (i.e. crab rangoons, Pad Thai, spring rolls etc). My favorite dish here is the Pad Ped with shrimp though. You'd never guess it from driving by, but I've been telling people for years, this plaza is an Asian food hidden gem. The Korean, Indian, and sushi place in the same strip are great as well.

After years of intending go get take out from here, tonight I did. Good decision. My Pad Prik was spiced just as requested and way flavorful. My wife enjoyed her Chow Mein noodle dish, flavorful but not saucy. The real star of the night was the green apple salad, a wonderfully balanced and simple combination of apples, red onion, toasted coconut flakes and cashews. The people at the counter were nice, packing the apple salad in a different bag than the hot food. The dining room is small, basic but pleasant. I'm planning on making this regular my Thai take-out place from now on.

I waiver, and actually between 3 and 4 stars. I am rounding up because they were nice and they gave me a vegan soup...normally I just don't get soup but they were very accommodating. I didn't see a bathroom. It could be through the kitchen...but I doubt it. The food was pretty ok. The spring rolls came in 3s, and the soup was good. The pad thai was what leans me towards the 3 stars. Next time I am in the area, I will look into the Indian place, because I hear it is awesome. But I would go back here too. It just wasn't as good as I expected with 4.5 stars is all.

Without a doubt, the best Thai in the area. I go for lunch once a week and for dinner occasionally. The service is friendly and the food is terrific! My roommate and I really can't get enough of this place. It's delicious! The Pad Thai is among the best I've had. The Crab Rangoon beats any Chinese food place. Their peanut sauce is perfect. On a night where indecisiveness made the dinner choice all the more difficult, we decided upon this hole-in-the-wall Thai place because of the great reviews. The chicken pad Thai and the chicken pad prik nor Mai were both great and were preceded by a small bowl of hot and sour soup which was just right on this cloudy, rainy day. And for dessert, the coconut ice cream was a very very good surprise. P.S. Went on a Friday night around 6:30 and no one else was there. I don't get it!! Feeling hungry and decided to go Thai today. Decided on Penns due to its star ratings. This was in the afternoon and as I entered , the place was empty. Oh oh! I thought not a good sign but decided to go ahead and try. I was pleasantly surprised how tasty the food was! Price not bad either. My favorite Thai place is in Ferndale but this would be a close second due to it being close to me! It's located in the century plaza in Troy where it host a United Nations show of food consisting Indian, Korean, Thai and your all American Dickeys Ribs.

So, if there is one upside to this place (as any place), yes, the food is kinda oily. But it's no worse for you than mashed potatoes that has 2 sticks of butter which isn't as visible. The food tastes so good, it's at a great price, and the staff is generally pretty nice. The portions make it a bang for your buck and their food is pretty diverse if you usually get more than the usual pad thai. If you're sketchy about the place, I wouldn't knock it til you try it. This will probably be my new regular thai place to go to.

When I visited Michigan, I decided to eat at Penn's Thai Cafe (I'm from Hollywood, CA and Thai town is just a block away so I KNOW Thai food, and I know GOOD Thai food). I can definitely say that Penn's Thai Cafe has an amazingly rich and authentic Thai menu. I don't think I can find anything negative to say about this restaurant. The owner's etiquette was superb and are always extremely friendly. It feels like home, the food is fresh, tasty, and there is nothing disappointing about this place! The restaurant is extremely clean and I love the ambiance. I have so many good things to say about Penn's Thai Cafe I don't know if it will all fit here and I wouldn't want to bore you! So take my advice and check this place out, you won't be disappointed.

I'm not a huge Thai fan. I order everything "No Spice"! Their pad thai is very good, but I usually get fried rice. It's loaded with fresh stir-fry veggies, and you can add meat if you want it. The crab rangoon appetizer is delicious.

Siam Spicey is still my favorite in Detroit, but I come here because the owners are wonderful people. I wasn't crying, but I probably would go with medium next time. Yelp says there are a lot of Thai places nearby and most are rated highly. I can't say I have been to them, but I don't think I need to go.

(The person with me ordered pad Thai extra spice) Upon ordering it that way when she brought out the soup she assured me that she made my spice level on the soup no spice as well :) soo thoughtful! The crab rangoons were good- really oniony though. The shrimp chips were great but then again I like them from anywhere lol. The pad Thai had frozen veggies vs fresh you could tell by the cuts that it wasn't done in house. The pad seew was wonderful! Saucy and sweet! Really good. I would totally come back here

I'm not a huge Thai fan. I order everything "No Spice"! Their pad thai is very good, but I usually get fried rice. It's loaded with fresh stir-fry veggies, and you can add meat if you want it. The crab rangoon appetizer is delicious.

The food is very good, I'm a fan of Yum Neau, which for me is the benchmark I use for grading Thai restaurants. Their version is good not great. Siam Spicey is still my favorite in Detroit, but I come here because the owners are wonderful people. They deserve your business because in this world of folks that don't know how to say thanks, or take your for granted, this never happens here.

Penn's Thai on Rochester Rd. in Troy is the absolute best Thai food in Michigan...and the owners are incredibly sweet and kind. I've tried many of their dishes and everything is always fresh and delicious. Highly recommended.

Penn's Thai has the best pad see eew. My boyfriend and I have gone to other Thai places, and been disappointed by all of them. None are as good as Penn's! We go there enough that they know our usual order. The owners are nice and always have a smile for everyone that walks in.

Just visited Penn's over the weekend. Ordered the Panang - one of my favorite Thai dishes. Was very, very good - not overly salty or sweet, just the right spice level. Everything tasted very fresh and the variety of veggies used was fantastic. Would definitely go back and try something else in the future.

I've order take-out for dinner but have not had a sit down dinner here yet. I've been to this place about at least 10 times the past year. Dinner portions go up about $2 more.

Pretty solid Thai food. I agree that it's excellent, but I would not necessarily call it the best Thai food ever - not even in the Detroit area. Have lived in NYC & eaten Thai all over the US. Had what they called Gai Koa, which I believe is generally chicken and rice in the Thai street food. No matter. Here they differentiate between Pad Thai as thin rice noodles which are NOT done in a wok, and their Gai Koa is wide noodles, done in a wok, with basically the same sauce treatment. Delish! I won't mention the name of the metro area Thai place that I think is better, because I don't mean to denigrate Penn's Thai, which is close to my Troy office, and the one particular place I prefer is not in the area. I DO wish I had thought to order a cup of tom yum soup (again, I THINK they serve tom yum - they list only "hot & sour" on their menu), since so many other Yelpers indicate how much they love the soup here and the fact that it's included if you dine in. Wonder if they'd consider offering it to those waiting for take-out? I'll be back!

Pretty solid Thai food. I am not sure if I would make this place my go to for Thai as I have a place right across the street from my office that I like just as much if not slightly better, but I wouldn't be opposed to eating here. I do like the fact they give you a complimentary cup of Hot and Sour Soup with your lunch that my other place doesn't do so they got that going for them. Also when it comes to spice they are pretty true to their temperatures. Hot was hot while I have seen places where Hot is more like Medium or in other cases Hot Plus. Timmy likes his Thai spicy, but I also like to know what I am getting myself in to and don't like surprises. The Pad Thai I had was good, but as Holly S. pointed out they use frozen veggies in place of fresh ones. This was pretty apparent in both taste and look. It's not like they were freezer burnt or anything, they tasted just fine. You can just tell they are trying to cut corners either with prep time, cost or both. The place is on the smaller size and I find it funny that the tables they use for their booths are from Joe's Crab Shack. When I saw that it gave me a chuckle. As they say one mans trash is another mans treasure I suppose.

It helps when you have a Thai Restaurant close by but when you have two, it's even better. Every time we get carryout or dine it, it is so delicious. I would recommend dining in because you get the soup and shrimp chips. YUM!

Great Thai place!! We recently moved from Los Angeles to the Midwest and were in the Troy area for work and we miss good Thai food. The service was fast and courteous! Spicy Thai noodle dish was spicy and delicious! Almost like our LA place! The wonton soup was also homemade and fresh! Highly recommend!

This is one of restaurants that make people afraid to go in at first when they see the outside. They do need to improve their restaurant decorations. The food is excellent here. Full of flavors and just the way thai food should be made. They would served you free shrimp chips which is good. I ordered massaman curry with chicken, spice level hot. The flavor is really delicious. The potatoes are soft and marinated well. The chicken is fresh and tender. I also ordered Tom Yum soup with chicken. The soup base is at the right sourness level and the flavor is really balanced and delicious. Overall, the service is good and the food is great!!! I will be back regularly!!!

Atmosphere is nothing special, but by far the best Thai food in SE Michigan. All the "safe" things that other places do okay, this place does great (i.e. crab rangoons, Pad Thai, spring rolls etc). My favorite dish here is the Pad Ped with shrimp though. You'd never guess it from driving by, but I've been telling people for years, this plaza is an Asian food hidden gem. The Korean, Indian, and sushi place in the same strip are great as well.

After years of intending go get take out from here, tonight I did. Good decision. My Pad Prik was spiced just as requested and way flavorful. My wife enjoyed her Chow Mein noodle dish, flavorful but not saucy. The real star of the night was the green apple salad, a wonderfully balanced and simple combination of apples, red onion, toasted coconut flakes and cashews. The people at the counter were nice, packing the apple salad in a different bag than the hot food. The dining room is small, basic but pleasant. I'm planning on making this regular my Thai take-out place from now on.

I waiver, and actually between 3 and 4 stars. I am rounding up because they were nice and they gave me a vegan soup...normally I just don't get soup but they were very accommodating. I didn't see a bathroom. It could be through the kitchen...but I doubt it. The food was pretty ok. The spring rolls came in 3s, and the soup was good. The pad thai was what leans me towards the 3 stars. Next time I am in the area, I will look into the Indian place, because I hear it is awesome. But I would go back here too. It just wasn't as good as I expected with 4.5 stars is all.

I have been getting carryout lately on my way home from work, and it is the best Thai I have found in northern Oakland county. Flavors are more interesting and complex than other places, so I keep coming back!

I love this place!!! The lady that takes your order is so nice and sweet. My absolute fave dish from here is Gai Kow. I either get it with shrimp or chicken and I'm never disappointed. The fried rice is also really great!!!! Basically anything you choose is a great choice.

Without a doubt, the best Thai in the area. I go for lunch once a week and for dinner occasionally. The service is friendly and the food is terrific! I recommended the Pad Thai and the Red Curry Chicken. I have never had the fried rice but it looks great. Best part is free soup and shrimp chips when you eat in!

My roommate and I really can't get enough of this place. It's delicious! The Pad Thai is among the best I've had. The Crab Rangoon beats any Chinese food place. Their peanut sauce is perfect. On a night where indecisiveness made the dinner choice all the more difficult, we decided upon this hole-in-the-wall Thai place because of the great reviews. The chicken pad Thai and the chicken pad prik nor Mai were both great and were preceded by a small bowl of hot and sour soup which was just right on this cloudy, rainy day. And for dessert, the coconut ice cream was a very very good surprise. P.S. Went on a Friday night around 6:30 and no one else was there. I don't get it!! Feeling hungry and decided to go Thai today. Decided on Penns due to its star ratings. This was in the afternoon and as I entered , the place was empty. Oh oh! I thought not a good sign but decided to go ahead and try. I was pleasantly surprised how tasty the food was! Price not bad either. My favorite Thai place is in Ferndale but this would be a close second due to it being close to me! It's located in the century plaza in Troy where it host a United Nations show of food consisting Indian, Korean, Thai and your all American Dickeys Ribs.

So, if there is one upside to this place (as any place), yes, the food is kinda oily. But it's no worse for you than mashed potatoes that has 2 sticks of butter which isn't as visible. The food tastes so good, it's at a great price, and the staff is generally pretty nice. The portions make it a bang for your buck and their food is pretty diverse if you usually get more than the usual pad thai. If you're sketchy about the place, I wouldn't knock it til you try it. This will probably be my new regular thai place to go to.

When I visited Michigan, I decided to eat at Penn's Thai Cafe (I'm from Hollywood, CA and Thai town is just a block away so I KNOW Thai food, and I know GOOD Thai food). I can definitely say that Penn's Thai Cafe has an amazingly rich and authentic Thai menu. I don't think I can find anything negative to say about this restaurant. The owner's etiquette was superb and are always extremely friendly. It feels like home, the food is fresh, tasty, and there is nothing disappointing about this place! The restaurant is extremely clean and I love the ambiance. I have so many good things to say about Penn's Thai Cafe I don't know if it will all fit here and I wouldn't want to bore you! So take my advice and check this place out, you won't be disappointed.

I wasn't crying, but I probably would go with medium next time. Yelp says there are a lot of Thai places nearby and most are rated highly. I can't say I have been to them, but I don't think I need to go.

(The person with me ordered pad Thai extra spice) Upon ordering it that way when she brought out the soup she assured me that she made my spice level on the soup no spice as well :) soo thoughtful! The crab rangoons were good- really oniony though. The shrimp chips were great but then again I like them from anywhere lol. The pad Thai had frozen veggies vs fresh you could tell by the cuts that it wasn't done in house. The pad seew was wonderful! Saucy and sweet! Really good. I would totally come back here

My favorite Thai place is in Ferndale but this would be a close second due to it being close to me! It's located in the century plaza in Troy where it host a United Nations show of food consisting Indian, Korean, Thai and your all American Dickeys Ribs.

Best Thai resteraunt in Troy. Very consistent on the spice from visit to visit, which is helpful as I make my way from medium plus to hot. The spicy noodle is very good; we also enjoy the crab Rangoon and spring rolls. I also enjoy the Pad See Ew.

So, if there is one upside to this place (as any place), yes, the food is kinda oily. But it's no worse for you than mashed potatoes that has 2 sticks of butter which isn't as visible. The food tastes so good, it's at a great price, and the staff is generally pretty nice. The portions make it a bang for your buck and their food is pretty diverse if you usually get more than the usual pad thai. If you're sketchy about the place, I wouldn't knock it til you try it. This will probably be my new regular thai place to go to.

When I visited Michigan, I decided to eat at Penn's Thai Cafe (I'm from Hollywood, CA and Thai town is just a block away so I KNOW Thai food, and I know GOOD Thai food). I can definitely say that Penn's Thai Cafe has an amazingly rich and authentic Thai menu. I don't think I can find anything negative to say about this restaurant. The owner's etiquette was superb and are always extremely friendly. It feels like home, the food is fresh, tasty, and there is nothing disappointing about this place! The restaurant is extremely clean and I love the ambiance. I have so many good things to say about Penn's Thai Cafe I don't know if it will all fit here and I wouldn't want to bore you! So take my advice and check this place out, you won't be disappointed.

I got yelped! Food is fatty and salty. My stomach was upset the next day even though I am used to spicy food. The owners are nice. That is about it.

I'm not a huge Thai fan. I order everything "No Spice"! Their pad thai is very good, but I usually get fried rice. It's loaded with fresh stir-fry veggies, and you can add meat if you want it. The crab rangoon appetizer is delicious.

The food is very good, I'm a fan of Yum Neau, which for me is the benchmark I use for grading Thai restaurants. Their version is good not great. Siam Spicey is still my favorite in Detroit, but I come here because the owners are wonderful people. They deserve your business because in this world of folks that don't know how to say thanks, or take your for granted, this never happens here.

Penn's Thai on Rochester Rd. in Troy is the absolute best Thai food in Michigan...and the owners are incredibly sweet and kind. I've tried many of their dishes and everything is always fresh and delicious. Highly recommended.

Penn's Thai has the best pad see eew. My boyfriend and I have gone to other Thai places, and been disappointed by all of them. None are as good as Penn's! We go there enough that they know our usual order. The owners are nice and always have a smile for everyone that walks in.

Really enjoyed the meal! Can really think of anything they could have done better. My soup was super good. Ginger chicken hit the mark as well. Will be adding this establishment to my regular rotation.

Just visited Penn's over the weekend. Ordered the Panang - one of my favorite Thai dishes. Was very, very good - not overly salty or sweet, just the right spice level. Everything tasted very fresh and the variety of veggies used was fantastic. Would definitely go back and try something else in the future.

I've been to this place multiple times, food taste great, waitress is nice and kind. If you go at lunch time, you get soup & chips. I've order take-out for dinner but have not had a sit down dinner here yet. I've been to this place about at least 10 times the past year. Dinner portions go up about $2 more.
