Just off the Indiana Toll Road and over the state line, this is a quite decent Mexican joint, a little unusual in style, but it would survive well in regions of the US where Mexican cuisine is thicker on the ground. If you order a burrito, you get a plateful of filling and a side of tortillas - apparently the theory here is "roll your own." Rice had melted cheese over it - weird but good. Several points off for a waitress who forgot that she had not delivered the bill, leaving us waiting and ...

This place use to be a great place to eat. Went there Saturday night and with only about ten people there we finally had to grab a waiter to just get our order in. When it arrived neither my wife or I got what we ordered. The food was average, but then it took quite sometime to get our bill. They charged us for a desert we never ordered. After driving twenty minutes to get there I will have to think about wanting to go back.

Horrible service. Server brought our drinks to us and asked if we were ready to order we said we needed a minute....SERVER DIDN'T COME BACK FOR 15 minutes and that isnt and exaggeration. Then when food did come it came out a plate at a time for the 6 of us(brought by 3 diffrent people none of whom was our server, food was wrong, asked to see manager and was told "its that guy in the red" and walked away. Needed refills on drinks but only saw server twice the entire meal. The slightly above average food wasn't enough to get me to come back WASTE OF MONEY!!!!!!!

Been here a few times. Marg's are killer. Service is weird. Food is authentic but mostly the same thing wrapped a different way.

A treasure. Genuine down home mexican food, nice unassuming place. It's not total master chef but it's real, and very reasonable. Quesa ballarta was delicious. Nice people.

We are getting to be regulars here. GREAT food, very fresh chips. An occasional order mix-up, but hey just go with the flow and you'll be fine!

I spent my childhood in Michigan and remember with more amusement than fondness the "Mexican" cuisine of my youth. You know, iceberg lettuce, crunchy taco shells, cloyingly sweet taco sauce and overseasoned ground beef. Now that I live in Texas, I have to admit that I smirked a bit when my parents suggested going to a Mexican restaurant in Sturgis - but I played along. I'm glad I did, because the food we had at Maria's was every bit as good as what we have in Texas! We started off with chips, salsa and guacamole. The salsa was fresh and authentic, not the spiced-up tomato sauce you so often see in the Midwest. The guacamole was excellent and obviously fresh as well, with chunks of avocado. The menu is pretty extensive, with the standard selection of fajitas, enchiladas and burritos. My companions ordered dishes from this category, and were pleased with their food. It looked good to me too. A small list of items were in both Spanish and English (the rest of the menu is English only). Figuring these items must be the real deal, I picked one - the shrimp with avocado. The dish came with rice, avocado chunks and a generous portion of shrimp that was expertly seasoned and char grilled - delicious! I will definitely try something else from this list when I go back. If you want to do the same, look for the red box (I think it's on the second page). This little sub-menu doesn't have a title, but the server told me they're all dinner plates. Ask for a side order of corn tortillas - they're served warm in a foil packet. The frozen margarita was okay - I found it a little too sweet - but the portion made it a great value. Be careful ordering the large, it will tip over your table when the server sets it down, and you may tip over if you finish it. There is a "monster" size on the menu that I didn't even think of ordering. Overall, excellent value and fresh choice for Mexican food in southwestern Michigan.

I think the staff is just awful. Always preoccupied...or inconvinced with customers. That's the impression i got the few times I was there. And food was not very good......my son and I had beans that were so spicey we couldn't eat anything and they were not like that before.

Fast becoming a regular here. Salsa is great, chips served warm. I had the burrito Maria w/ ground beef and it was excellent. With the refried beans and rice I was more than satisfied. My wife had a chicken fajita that was also very well prepared. She brought the majority of it home in a box. This was our second visit since the remodel and the service has been very good. The only drawback is standing in line to pay the check as the waitstaff does not handle payment. I prefer to pay at the table. Overall, very good Mexican food in a typical Mexican restaurant local. Better than most.

Err, gross. The floor was coated with chips when I arrived on a Friday evening. The enchiladas were surrounded by a sweet tomato paste that was not even close to being Mexican style. The only redeeming thing was the octopus tostada I ordered from the Spanish-language menu. Definitely would not return!!!

First of all, I will say that the food was acceptable. It was far from the best Mexican I have had - but it was farther from the worse. However, the best of food can not make up for poor service and even poorer honesty in the staff. I am unsure if they were caught off guard by an unplanned rush - but they only had two servers and one bus girl and the restaurant was rather full. I was seated right next to the path way the servers used to get from the tables to the kitchen and they walked by me at least a dozen times each before one of them finally commented he would be back for my order in a few minutes. Sitting for nearly 10 minutes and being ignored is not a great way to start the evening. I will normally give a restaurant 2 or 3 chances before I put them on my never again list and even more before I will post a negative review on line. However, this place earned the reward of not only will I not return - I recommend to others not to go either. I seldom drink even when dining out, but I decided that I would have a beer with my meal. I ordered a Miller Lite draft. I watched the server write BUD on the ticket. Then I watched him draw from the Bud Light tap and when he brought me the drink, I challenged him on it. He flat out lied that it was Miller and not Bud. I am allergic to Bud, it gives me a head ache. By the time I left, I had the headache that I have gotten for decades with in an hour of drinking any Bud product. Rather then simply say - sorry, I made a mistake and dump the beer, he wanted to save his restaurant the cost of miss pour and cost him his tip and the restaurant my business. AVOID this place until they hire sufficient HONEST servers.

Hard working friendly staff. It was a normal sized building and they had tons of employees running around. This meant all of the customers had great service. We are from Texas and were skeptical about Michigan Mexican food but if this place was located around our home we would go here rather than the local Mexican food joints we have back home. I had Chiles poblanos and my husband had a chimichanga de LA casa and they were both great! If we are ever in the area we will stop by here again! On a side note they had plenty of parking and served alcohol.

The food is good and the price isn't bad but it isn't any better than other similar restaurants. However, the service is terrible and the dining room echoes so badly that you can barely manage a simple conversation. I would recommend trying another Mexican restaurant in town.

Unfortunately, the service at Maria's has only gotten worse. We visited for my daughters 15th birthday this past week. The server was HORRIBLE. (Older, very short guy who is almost always rude). He got orders wrong because he acted so rushed, he was half listening to us. He brought the food and just haphazardly sat scorching hot plates in front of people without asking who ordered what, then walked away, leaving us to move the plates. Never came back to ask if everything was ok, took forever to even come back and bring checks and boxes. Once we went to pay, SEVERAL people walked right past us at the register and wouldn't ring us up. The kicker...our friends who ate with us that night had a $25 gift certificate. The staff refused to take it because "we got a new system and I don't know how to do gift certificates. You'll have to come back another time and use it." Are you kidding me? Oh, and the table we were sat at was directly in the one path to the kitchen/cash register. Needless to say, our chairs were getting bumped our entire meal. When I spend $60+ dollars for dinner out, I demand better service. I will not return.

Yum. Fresh salsas of varying heat. The pork dishes may be better than you'd expect from a family restaurant. The menu included lighter & cheaper lynch dishes. The service is excellent. They seem to draw quite a few regulars.

First I would like to say that this is probably the first review of this nature I have written for any restaurant that I have visited. I always try to find the positive side of an establishment because every business will have an off day, but this one was Horrendous!. My husband and I were in the Sturgis area for a mini vacation during Valentines Day Weekend. Our family lives out here and we visit quite regularly and eat in the area often. We were looking to try out some new places so we purchased a restaurant.com gift cert. for this place. Which by the way they do not honor once you get there. We arrived around 7Pm. and were told to seat ourselves. This would have been no problem except that all of the empty tables were filthy. One of the bus boys (approximately around the age 0f 13) came over to a table we picked and swept the food and grime off the table and onto the floor! 1st turn off. Waitress was prompt and polite but a bit overloaded. There were only two of them during the dinner rush! She took our drink and food order and left. Our drinks came and the Strawberry Margarita I ordered was great, but a bit pricey (7.98 for one). Our food arrived shortly after and the portions on our plate would feed a 10 year old. The steak tacos were overly salted, beans were served on a flat plate and were a runny mess and the rice had no flavor. While we were eating and talking, two busboys (again 12 yrs old at the most) came over and interrupted our conversation and dinner to reach over us and take the empty plates and then hover there and wait to get the other dishes until my husband told them to leave. They were goofing around while they were working and then broke the cart with the dirty dishes on it and it crashed to the floor in the middle of the place. After our meal the waitress brought the bill that didn't have a total on it and said the bar "does that". While I waited for my husband to pay, some employees came around the corner and opened a door directly across from me (in 15 degree weather) to dump out some garbage. As we were leaving the restaurant there was a man lying on the floor outside the same door that was opened passed out as a few of the employees and another patron stood around laughing at him. This whole situation made me write this review. I would not return to this place or ever refer it to other family or friends in the area. I had to give it one star because of the Margarita, at least that was flavorful, and this rating system doesn't allow for negative stars. T&S. Miller

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
