Yum. We're visiting from up north. I was expecting typical family restaurant stuff where everything tastes the same. I had the mushroom soup--awesome. Calzone--awesome. I'd actually drive from where I live to come here again it was that good.

Great food great friendly service! All you can eat fish on Friday is a hit and the prime rib can be cut with a butter knife. Make sure to ask for bread so you can try cherry butter. Good selection of beers.

Fred's is the Funk! This place is the community center for Roscommon. We eat here several times a year in our travels and you really can't go wrong. Family Friendly, full bar, attached bowling alley. Everything on the menu is good. Order what you want just make sure to try the Hungarian mushroom soup!

My husband and I came to Fred's for dinner while on a camping trip. Definitely glad I decided not to cook tonight and come here for dinner! I had the prime rib and it was good (cooked a little to well for my liking as I ordered medium) and my husband had the blackened ribeye and it was cooked perfectly. Portion sizes were generous and the prices were very reasonable. The dinner salads were very fresh and the rolls with cherry butter was excellent! The atmosphere was welcoming and our service was great. They had a great draft beer selection and fresh brewed iced tea! Very good! Great place to watch the Tiger's game and play keno. We will definitely come back when we are in the area. Make sure you visit when in town!

Don't be put off by the Bowling Alley! Great kitchen, friendly staff. Half-price pizza on Weds. It's all good! Great selection of beer on tap, wide menu selection. Plenty of parking. A great place for a casual bite to eat.

Had a fantastic experience here! Started with a great selection of beers on tap. (Makes sense given the alley!) Dinners come with a warm, tasty roll and cherry butter plus a a fresh salad. You can upgrade your salad, but the house version is no slouch and the dressings taste freshly made too. I enjoyed the maple pecan encrusted salmon with garlic mashed red skin potatoes. OMG...Christmas in my mouth!!!! The salmon was fantastic...not too sweet and the serving was generous. See the picture posted here on Yelp for the visual before I eagerly buried my fork in it! The Saturday special of petit filet was also a winner. Seasoned well and cooked perfectly. The service was spot on (thank you, Laura) and the casually elegant ambiance fits this place. Look out the windows for the birds enjoying a good meal too. Everyone is happy here. I will absolutely be back.

Yesterday we had pizza at Fred's in Roscommon. Finally.. We found the best tasting pizza we have ever tasted. Fresh ingredients tasty sauce without all the grease! A 45 minute drive one way but it's definitely worth the drive. Oh.. There burgers are the best we ever had too!!

I want to preface this review by saying Fred's is the ONLY game in town. Seriously. Roscommon is a town of a few things and lots of empty/closed businesses. So, if you want to go out to eat and you don't want McDonald's (yes, there actually is one fast food joint there), Fred's is the place to be. Now normally if you're the only game in town, you don't have to be good. People just automatically come to you because they have no where else to go. But Fred's has decided to actually BE good, even though there's no competition. We went in the middle of the week - a Tuesday - and typical restaurants have plenty of seating available. Fred's was packed. PACKED. (Again, only game in town.) We got there about 5:15 and luckily got seated but by the time we were finishing our meal there were people waiting for seats. Waitstaff - pleasant, friendly, helpful. I appreciated the staff person who just went around cleaning dirty dishes off of tables. It seems insignificant, but restaurant tables are always too small, and trying to fit all the app dishes, condiments, meal dishes, etc. on gets rough. I appreciate that they keep an eye out for things and gave us lots of elbow room. Restaurant itself - Clean, woodsy. Typical Up North feel. I believe there were 8 bowling lanes. We saw them but didn't bowl. Everyone looked like they were having a good time. Pool table. (18 and older to play.) TVs around for your viewing pleasure. Food - We ordered the meat lover's pizza, fish and chips with cole slaw, and a cobb salad. We also ordered the fried portabello mushroom strips. Mushroom strips - excellent. Gotta love mushrooms!! Plus, they were lightly coated in a tasty batter (I'm assuming it's their own housemade batter.) Pizza - Looked good, smelled good. My son ate half of a 12" without any complaints. :) And he'd definitely complain if there was something wrong with his pizza. Cobb salad - Nicely presented. My husband ordered honey mustard dressing with it, but when it arrived, he thought they gave him the wrong dressing. You know how most restaurants are going to give you that yellow, corn syrup goo they call honey mustard? Not Fred's. It was a stone ground honey mustard dressing. Light and tasty. Nice! Fish and Chips - Loved it. The fries were fries, but the fish was great. That same batter they use on the mushrooms - light, crispy and seasoned. It's exactly what fish and chips should be battered with. Rolls with Cherry butter - Tasty. I'm not sure I like cherry butter - not that it was bad. I just think it's not for me. It tasted good, but I don't think I wanted it with dinner. I'd almost like a cherry roll with regular butter instead. I don't remember us running out of beverages (my coffee cup always had coffee in it). Everything was really great for a business who could just decide to cheap out and be average since they're the only game in town. Would definitely come back here for future meals if I'm in the area.

My mom has been raving about the pizza here for YEARS and I finally got to try it when we were up on vacation. I'm a big fan of unusual toppings--give me a Thai pizza or something like goat cheese/pulled pork/honey/pistachios and I'm in heaven...so to be honest I was a bit hesitant about plain ol' pizza from a bowling alley in Roscommon. But they did have one semi-unusual choice on the menu which I instantly gravitated towards...a chicken Alfredo---wait for it---topped with Caesar salad. And I have to say it was one of my favorite pizzas I've ever had! The crust was chewy and delicious. The chicken Alfredo had just enough chicken pieces with just the right amount of sauce...and the Caesar salad on top really worked well! Woohoo! I was a happy camper! The service was super friendly, though it may have been a tad slow at times because they were slammed (as always on half off pizza night), but we got refills promptly so that's a bonus! I would definitely eat here again.

I am so happy that we found this place while up north! Both of us were in the mood for some fish, specifically some Atlantic cod fish n' chips and perch. Not only did they have both, but they let Steven substitute the fish for perch in one of their dishes with the lemon sauce and capers. Also, try the cherry compound butter they bring out with the bread! Shout out to our server Amy, who was super friendly and attentive. This place is also in a bowling alley. Funny thing, while watching the food network a couple weeks before there was a special about another amazing restaurant in a bowling alley. So don't lose hope that there is good food in places like these! This bowling alley however is super cute and rustic and looks like it's housed in a large log cabin. This is some of the best fish I have ever had, and I've lived on both coasts. That's saying something. Nothing over the top here, just really good clean food sourcing and prepared perfectly.

Bought the barbeque chicken pizza on Saturday, July 25, 2015. Three out of four of us ate the pizza and all three of us got sick. Still not feeling well. Would advise not buying it. L. D. Rogers, Saginaw, MI

How can you beat Fred's???? What a great place and a great atmosphere. But what was better was the food. First, you start with the bread and the homemade, secret recipe, Cherry Butter! I had a whole bin of bread to myself because of how great it tasted. The menu is pretty extensive with plenty of great options. They have all you can eat cod on Fridays for $12.99, which someone in my party devoured, but I went with the Tower Burger. Should have called it the Sears Tower Burger because it was gigantic. This place was amazing! Great price, great portions and great people. Eat here. You will not be disappointed.

Brought the whole family (4 kids) in for lunch today and they seemed happy to see us, gave us a big table and the service was great. The mac and cheese was excellent!! Didn't get to try the cherry butter as the rolls don't come with the lunch menu but I may swing by and try it again. Would have bowled too but my husband hates bowling ;) The desserts were amazing, too. Great food for a sleepy little town!

We had a large group come in on a Sunday evening. Wait staff was excellent (skittles ). High marks for service and politeness - and we tested him with our questions and special orders. Kids went with Mac n cheese, turkey rueben, and bread sticks. All were devoured quickly. Adults went with chicken bbq, chicken & mushroom and lobster & asparagus pizza. All delicious. A couple in the group enjoyed the prime rib and trout. High marks around. We're not from the area, but will return again.

  • Mischelle W.

Food is great. We had calzone, meatball muffin and a few wings. The atmosphere is a little loud and cramped but the food makes up for it. The service was also very good and we overall enjoyed this place. We would definitely recommend!

Had dinner at Fred's last night and loved eating local Michigan fare that this Roscommon iconic restaurant served up - try the Fred's Michigan Salad and the Cherry Chicken ... then, finish off our meal with the epic Saunders Hot Fudge Ice Cream Cream Puff - OMG!

When you're really the only game in town..you kinda have a captive audience.... The food is good...not great..but good and the portion sizes are comfortable... You don't leave hungry. On a busy night the speed of the kitchen leaves something to be desired... And the level and quality of service you receive varies greatly by the server. Having eaten here at least 50+ times (I live in the area) I can honestly say its a place worth visiting in you're in the area.

I'd call this gourmet comfort food...also there are some healthy choices too.... for those that can resist the decadent ones!. We had a fabulous Hungarian mushroom soup, meatloaf muffins and great Mac and cheese. I saw a Cobb salad that looked delish. Tons of options. Don't let the idea of it in a bowling alley fool you. The dining area is decorated nice and is far from the bowling. Great service too.

Very good food and atmosphere rustic look to the place. There menu gives you a lot to choose from. I would rather drive from Grayling to eat here than most places in Grayling or to go to Gaylord. The also run nightly specials which have always been good. Wait staff is attentive and polite very friendly. Oh and the have a bowling alley if you eat to much and need to work off a few pounds. Let me put it to you this way. I was pumping gas in Flint and there was a old timer across from me in two minutes of talking to him he was telling me about a wonderful restaurant in Roscommon Michigan named FREDS! all I could I was smile and say I know exactly where you're talking about.

While camping at Higgins Lake we needed breakfast as we weren't prepared-we did hear from some folks that Fred's would be a great place to go; so we checked it out. We had the breakfast buffet which was similar to the breakfast buffet you'd find at Big Boys but the quality was so much better. The French toast was excellent as was the way they cooked the bacon! The best part (besides the quality of the food) was the price....$7.99 for the buffet! We'll certainly go there again if in the area.

What a pleasant surprise and a great place to eat. Would have been a 5 start, their desserts were a zero: obviously not made in house. We had our doubts due to the emphasis on pizza on the outside.. The local bakery recommended Fred's (we were looking for soup). What a great place! I had the fish sandwich and was not disappointed. Extremely clean, great server (Laura?), good food, nicely decorated, reasonably priced. Shall come back.

First class from start to finish, for me and mine! But I do have a couple grand kids who are vegan would be nice to be able to order something simple for them, when they come up.

This place is awesome! When we're up north, we always go to Fred's several times. I haven't had anything that I don't like. Wednesdays are half off pizza and cheap bowling, but it gets very crazy in there, so if you don't like chaos, avoid Wednesdays. Great food, great place, great people and a large selection to choose from! Highly recommend it!

Great Pizza and nice place to grab a lunch or dinner. Every Wednesday is half off pizza DINE IN ONLY. They have a 10 lane bowling alley too.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians.
