Food is great but service is horrible...with the exception of the main female bartender. The waitresses were no where to be found..when I asked the bartender where they were she didn't know either. A few guys from the bar said the waitresses were in back getting high. When the waitress was found 30 minutes later..she appeared high and never placed the order I gave her. The only reason I'll be back is cause my guy likes to play pool there...other than that..no way!

If you are stuck at the airport and need a good, HUGE sandwich or burger, check this place out. Full bar, microbrews, and great waitstaff. Very close to the hotels and airport.

I was referred to this place - with the premise being how huge the portions where for the price (and was told the food was good), etc. etc. Well - sometimes size does not matter (at least in the food world......). Let me start with the location. The bar sits off the road a bit and has a bit of a dark / uninviting feel to the outside. If it wasn't for the cars parked out front (admittedly there were quite a few patrons) - you might think the place was shuddered and closed down. It is a straight forward bar (in general terms). Although it does have a rather large seating area; this isn't the place for a general dining experience (nothing wrong with that - it just wasn't my initial understanding). In my hay day - I probably would have viewed it as a great bar stop in general (food being more of an after-thought). So if you look at it from a pure bar perspective - your opinion might differ from mine. On to the food - Wheat and Rye was touted to me for this reason. Admittedly - I only sampled a handful of items. So take it for what it is worth. I will say the menu looks enticing (from a straight burger, sandwich, bar food perspective). The even use words like "Famous Sandwich" or "All Star Burgers" - so who wouldn't be jazzed up to down a few of the items; right? We tried a sampling of the Reuben Sandwich, Hoagie, and Superbird. This was take out for us so there is not much to report on that front. Service was straight forward and satisfactory. We ordered in house and waited. No complaints on cook time or anything on that front. The food was in gigantic portions. I mean that quite literally. Sometimes people say "large portions" and it is not entirely true. I even asked the waitress about this; she didn't even have to say much - her subtle "ughh yay" gesture got the point across. If you were to form an opinion solely on size of meal / portions - Wheat and Rye might be an award winner and be revered in restaurant lore (heck - maybe that is why there are so many loyal followers to begin with). But - like I stated earlier - size doesn't always matter and you still have to satisfy the person (or in this case taste buds and my stomach - this is till food we are talking about here - let's keep it PG people!). Maybe I made the wrong assumption - but the sandwiches were not grilled / oven baked. It was just general - cold - straightforward bread. I really think that could make a huge difference in the taste and maybe that is my mistake for "not requesting" - but who the hell wants plain (cold - for all intents) sandwich when downing a few bears. For that matter; I can't imagine a stomach full of beer and then trying to "house" one of these mammoth sandwiches. Further - there just really wasn't any distinctive taste or flavor. I kept waiting for that "something" to hit me and it never did. The closest thing was the Reuben (when you have Russian Dressing - it's hard to screw up) - but even at that - it lacked the balance in overall ingredients to make it fantastic. At the end of the day - these were just simple sandwiches at the core with nothing to else to offer. It really was just overkill all the way around with the premise being the portions. I'm a French Fry guy too - and even the amount of skins was nauseating (not to mention they were that good - a dry wimpy fry that tasted like it was re-heated from yesterday's leftovers). Cost was moderate. Probably about what you would expect. But otherwise - I really just wasn't impressed. I'm not going to kill Wheat and Rye here - it might be I should try them one more time and do something different- or asked for the sandwich to be made a bit differently. But - have to be honest that when I analyze everything from every angle - I honestly don't believe they will raise the bar because I think there premise is fundamentally wrong in focusing on portion size (as opposed to quality food in general). These are just my thoughts.

"We, as a nation, can never have socialized medicine when high calorie food is as cheap and plentiful as it is in America." If we had socialized healthcare, this place would have a hefty sin tax. The amount of food you get here for the dollar is insane. Yes, the portions are HUGE. Now don't get me wrong, it is very good pub grub. Just be sure what you order can be taken home in a doggy bag. Or if you are staying in a hotel, skip the appetizers which are enough to fill you up. Beer selection is excellent. Lots of mid west micros. Service very good despite how busy it can be.

Never have I heard where they won't give you a glass of water! They charge a$1.25 for a bottle of water ( the beers were only a dollar) doesn't make sense to me.

Well, I went here to meet some out of town friends. I didn't choose the location. It was FREEZING in the building and the bathroom was even colder. Our food came out in shifts taking more than 10 minutes for all of us to get it. The sandwiches were ENORMOUS but what good is a giant sandwich or burger if it's not cooked right or is nearly impossible to pick up. Medium rare burger came out well done. Paying for water is lame especially if the waitress doesn't tell you until she brings it out. Pizza was just plain terrible. Good point? Uhhh.. The football game was on.

this place is legendary for their gigantic ham sandwiches. the corned beef is also epic. defintely will not leave hungry. big portions of food. but the quality of the portion is what is great. just because the portions are large doesn't mean you will be getting something that is sub-par. can't leave without loosening the belt a notch or two.

Worst sandwich I ever had! Oversized bread doesn't make a good sandwich. Turkey Rueben is thei specialty??? R U kidding me! Processed turkey, a spoonfull of slaw and a slice of American Cheese!!!! American cheese on a Rueben!!! Wast there a 4th grader in the kitchen making the sandwich? On top of it all, slowest service I have ever experienced in a pub. Save yourself a miserable night out with bad food.....don't go near this place!

Had hugely stacked pastrami with russian dressing on pumpernickle bread... Was delicious and looked perfect minus it being a messy type of sandwich.

Delicious! Corned beef sandwich (mini) & roast beef sandwich..regular sandwiches are ENORMOUS!

  • diane t.

Really good BLT, and pulled pork sandwich except for the soft white bread it was delicious. The food is great, the price is right but CAUTION, beware of poor sanitation. The bathrooms are REALLY dirty. And, get this- the waitresses have to double as DISHWASHERS! In a sink- no dish machine. I'm not kidding you - how clean can those dishes be?. Maybe the policy of only selling bottled water is not such a bad thing! Anyway we ate and survived. We actually really enjoyed it. Just make sure your immune system is in tip top shape! Consider yourself warned.

I was disappointed that they only offer bottled water, no tap available. While the food is good, this is just ridiculous and not environmentally friendly

Upon further review (and another visit) i have to drop this down a star. The reason is the i feel like the quality of meat isn't as great as the top deli's in Metro Detroit. The wings and fries here are still great and their drink are still at a good price. Still probably the biggest deli sandwiches in the state of Michigan and definitely worth a visit, but the meat isn't the greatest.

  • scott s.

Amazing size for the price. I have been here all day watching.football and s to go order was messed up for complete orders were fixed and packaged fir takeout within 5 min....way to go to make a bad situation into a positive.

HUGE portions. Service, so-so. Okay place to kill a few hours before a flight. Nothing's happening to speak of on the inside, looks to be a local dive bar.

The first time I was here, I fell in love... Currently getting ready to go there now... Love the cornbeef burger!

  • Holly K.

Had the wheat and rye sandwich and it was tasty and really really generously sized ! Nice waitress and food came out quite quickly...onion rings looked great on the next table over bit were disappointing very heaving breaded and a bit overdone...my daughter had the grouper sandwich special and it was great and fries were plentiful and tasty....great beer selection and staff kept our sodas full...what's not to like?

This place is good. My uncle was in town recently and near the airport staying in Romulus and suggested this spot to meet. Cold beers and GIANT sandwiches. The corned beef/pastrami sandwich was massive and very very good. My uncle and I split one sandwich and neither of us have much trouble eating haha. Good spot if you are ever hungry and in Romulus.

  • Enrique B.

Let me start by saying that I drink a lot of water. I don't like drinking soda or alcohol very often. Water. Thats my drink of choice. The Wheat and Rye does NOT offer complimentary water. It offers bottles of Nestle Pure and Absopure (super cheap brands) for like $1.75 each. Who the heck are they kidding? Isn't it a law that restaurants must provide complimentary water? It isn't just a bar. It is a restaurant. I am so offended. Offended. And lets not even talk about the surly waitresses.

  • Tom J.

I went there for lunch so I did not have and drink but what I did get was the Philly cheese steak sandwich. It's at least 14 inches long and about 6 inches wide. It's filled with the lowest grade steak topped with a chopped up onion and covered in nacho cheese. I didn't even know how to start eating it because it was so big. It tasted worse than it looked but what can you expect when you use terrible ingredients. I took 3 bites and couldn't eat anymore. I'm not sure about the rest of their food but don't get their philly cheese steak.

    (1)
  • Jeff H.

The fact is that the sandwiches here are outlandish! The Service is kinda like a joke.... Makes me laugh mostly. Bottled water at a pub & grub is also a joke.

    (2)
  • Brian B.

Good beer selection, friendly service, and tasty sandwiches. The portions of the sides and the sandwiches are HUGE. If you're not a linebacker or have an appetite like one then split with a buddy or plan on a to-go box. The sides were so-so and the prices were OK, my cheese steak sandwich was good. I'd definitely revisit.

  • Tim W.

Holy cow. I can't believe the amount of food and the extremely low prices at this restaurant. It is what I would call a sports bar with food, rather than a restaurant with a bar. it's certainly not elegant and it has a little bit of the smell of a place that used to allow smoking in previous days. I think it is in the wood. Don't let that deter you. The sandwiches were AWESOME. The corned beef, pastrami and turkey were a very good quality. The bread was fantastic and the size of a sandwich was gargantuan! I'm a big guy and can eat a Big sandwich. There is no way I was ever going to tackle that monster. The meats were very tasty and the bread fresh. The unbelievable part is that the sandwiches cost $5.96 - $7.96. You can't buy the meat Loaded in the sandwich for that much. Try it you'll like it. I wanna go back. Biggest bummer for us was a lot of waste since we could not take leftovers,

  • I'm G.

Place looks nice from the outside and is maintained quite well. From the inside it is a cheap bar food kind of place. Sandwiches which I thought would be good based on the name of the place were mediocre. Nothing worth talking on the menu. Nachos were good but that does not say much about a place.

  • Lori D.

I have been a fan of this bar/restaurant for many years and it has become a regular stop for us tired and hungry travelers after leaving Metro airport. My husband's favorite is the corned beef sammy. It had so much meat on it, we ended up taking half of the sandwich home and that made two more sandwiches for lunch the next day! My pastrami was huge as well and I could only eat half. The quality of their meat is A++! Very lean. They also serve HUGE portions of fries as well. The only reason I gave it four out of 5 stars and not higher is because the food took forever to come out...like 15 -20 minutes. For sandwich orders, I think that's too much time. Still, be sure to make a stop here after your trip. You won't leave hungry, that's for sure.

Had dinner here one evening, sat at the bar. The place has a pretty good menu selection. The place has a blue collar, dive bar vibe to it. Don't sit at the bar if you are easily offended. Four different staff members at various times loitered down at my end of the bar - and spent considerable time cussing. I was not offended, but it started to get a little old. They have an excellent craft beer selection, mostly in bottles. I ordered the Macho Nachos and a Founders Pale Ale, plus water. I was told they don't do glasses of water - I have to buy a bottle of water. Very odd for such a divey place. Nachos came out, the portion was massive. Way more than I could eat. The Nachos were served in this huge basket. When I commented on how much food it was - the bartender made the comment that somehow the quantity of food they were serving justified only offering bottled water. I stated that I wished they had told me how much food came in an order of Nachos - I could only eat about 1/4 of the basket - I hate wasting food. Had I known how much food this was - I would have ordered something else. The Founders Pale Ale was very good. First time trying this Pale Ale. It had a nice hoppiness, combined with a crisp, slightly citrus and bitter finish. I then had a second Pale Ale - Midwestern Pale Ale (Bell's Brewery, Kalamazoo, MI). I was not as impressed with the Midwestern Pale Ale - compared to the Founders Pale Ale. It was less flavorful and less hoppy. If I were simply ranking Wheat & Rye based on the craft beers - I would have given the place 4-5 stars. But the rather average Nachos, too much food, policy about only serving bottled water, and the ongoing coarse language - they only get 3 stars. I'd come back here to drink.

Great little greasy spoon. Good little dive. Food is a bargain and huge portions. Not particularly a family place, unless maybe there for lunch after a game.

  • Shunda B.

Oh yeah - i'm a fan. (PICK-UP ONLY) Macho Nacho, Lo's Deli, and BLT are pretty nice large tasty dishes. I've never ate inside but my coworkers call in our orders all the time which usually take about 30 mins. Unfortunately I was too impressed with the cornbeef - alot of meat but it seemed a little dry (you might need to ask for more sauce). Prices are very reasonable!

I love the cheese fries plus Keno is available. The juke box is great and always on Que. One Rueben is enough to feed an army! Please stop hating on this place and come visit!

If you don't have time to read a lengthy review I can sum it up in 7 words for you, On The Next Episode of Restaurant Impossible. For those that would like the full version I would encourage you to read on. Right off the bat the first thing that hits you is how dirty this place is. Maybe that is why they keep it so dark in here. I'm confident that any burst of light would send rats and creepy crawlies scrambling in all directions. I hate a place where you don't know if it's, wait to be seated or seat yourself and this is exactly what Wheat and Rye is. After standing at the freezing cold entrance for probably 5 minutes and making eye contact with every employee except the cook we cautiously approached the closest table and sat down already slightly annoyed. Service was friendly but infrequent. The greeting took a long time, refills took a long time and we were never informed that the waters we ordered were $1.25 EACH. Seriously? For water? The portions are huge, that is true but I'd sacrifice a lot of quantity for a little more quality. We paid $10.95 for a pizza that I am pretty sure started off as a frozen Tombstone. The corned beef was so salty it made my butt hole pucker up and the burger in the Patty Melt I'm certain was made with the lowest quality grade of beef that is allowed to be consumed by human beings. Bathrooms are also disgusting to the point that I almost let my son pee his pants because that seemed the lesser of the two evils. I love a dive bar and it's tough to be so critical but all my favorite dive bars have some redeeming quality. They may be dirty but they have good food or great beer. Wheat and Rye has nothing going for it in my opinion. So, unless you are already drunk and are looking for the maximum amount of poor quality food for $9.95 I would suggest you head to the Big Boy down the street where you might not get a giant salty sandwich but you certainly won't have to pay water.

This place is loud and so is the food and drink. The food is big, really big, but the prices are not. The menu is crowded, but really famous for large portion sandwiches. Some menu items: a Turkey Ruben, Hot Pastrami, Philly Steak cheese, Corned Beef, Stacked Ham, Superbird, Wheat & Rye Combo - and the menu goes on and on. Plenty of beer on tap and bottle. Is something of a local hang, which is usually a good indicator of value and this place did not disappoint. Again, the portions are lumber jack large. You will need a doggy bag. For 2 adults to eat and drink 3 beers cost us $36.20 before tip. I won't recommend this place for families as it is very loud and the people sitting near us dropped the F bomb repeatedly. AC/DC was playing on the Juke Box - which I like. The place is just a great place to eat, though. It is a big square loud box with good food and drink near the Detroit Airport. I apologize for the poor quality of the photos. Does not do the food portions justice.

  • Brittany R.

i would give the sandwiches alone five stars because of the size and price. however, the service here kind of sucks. i normally don't write reviews mentioning much about the service but i came here before and waited over an hour just to receive the bill from the waitress. she never ever checked on us after bringing us our food, instead she was off chatting with whom i am assuming is the manager or owner. in that case, it's even worse to have someone above you who is okay with you not servicing your guests. also, there is no free water. they only serve bottled water which is kind of dumb but hey, to each his own. the sandwiches and seasoned fries are great though! i think i will only order carryout from now on, though.

  • Tina P.

You will come here (and come back here) because it is SO cheap. If I had any other food or drink option in the vicinity, I'd pick it. I have been many, many times spanning over 6 years. After my first time, the rest of my visits have been my peers decision. It is scummy and cheap. Although, I totally understand the appeal, the reason for my bad review (which you will realize for yourself) is of all my traveling, in all of the world, I have never ever been treated as poorly as I have by the manager, very recently. That will finalize my decision to never come here again and to tell absolutely everyone I know which unfortunately is a lot of their customers since their business tends to be in the travel industry.

Holy cow!! Having the pulled pork sandwich with a side of mushrooms...huge portions and great bar service....cold beer...great local IPA...needing a to go box so I can finish this sandwich sometime next week!!!

  • Brian P.

13 Beers on Tap. Huge bottle selection. I count 10 flat screens to watch the game. Great menu. Sandwiches are obnoxiously big and half the price they could charge for them. My Monster Pork Sandwich was awesome. Slaw on the sandwich plus sweet potato fries. It was twice the size of a regular pulled pork sandwich. I'll be back.

Best place to be around Detroit airport, especially when waiting for arriving flight pickups. Not fancy but the food gets 5 stars for size, quality and price. Huge sandwiches at your typical corner bar with both craft and mainstream beers and a full bar. Service is very good, not fast but not slow either. Pool table and jukebox help pass the time along with a dozen TVs including a large screen with sports TV. I love this place. Great value for the $

    (5)
  • William B.

You might as well stop looking for a better bar food place. everything from the Ruben to the fried bologna sandwiches is amazing. As far as food goes here I give it a 5 stars!

    (5)
  • David F.

Pretty disappointed. As noted by other reviewers, the portions are really huge, and quite modestly priced. But from a quality standpoint, they're just not that great. Not awful, but definitely nothing special. I guess if you're looking for a LOT of mediocre food instead of a little, this might be your place. Also, I asked for a glass of water while I browsed the beer menu, but was told no, I would have to purchase a bottle of water. How ridiculous. I'm only here a few days on business, but if I were local, I probably wouldn't go back there or recommend it to anyone.

    (2)
  • Michele S.

Great food and attentive service. This establishment also has an extensive beer list with many craft beer choices. A great sports bar/ pub feel. Many burger choices and sandwich options on the menu. We will definitely return here.

    (5)
  • Mike M.

I can't go any higher than a 3 here. Atmosphere is typical beer joint. Sandwiches are Monsters that are nothing more than a heart attack on a plate. Sides too. I will say its amazing how big the sandwiches are for 7-8 dollars. Easily big enough for two people. Back in my college days I would have liked this place because of the huge servings. Nowadays, I am a little smarter!!!

    (3)
  • Seth R.

I had heard about their enormous sandwiches and finally decided to give it a try. I ordered the Turkey Club Deluxe with Fries to go. Once back i my hotel room I opened the container and couldn't believe how large it was. After analyzing how exactly to handle this mammoth sandwich I took my first bite and it was DELICIOUS. Considering I paid only around $7 for it I was very happy with the product. Nice job.

Its September 25. I asked for a bag of chip...they are out but!!! They have pretzels. Bag date May 19 2014. I adked for a glass of water. Only bottled water. $1.25 I asked for the bill. Also watching Tiger baseball and they change to so.e football game from out of state.

If you like huge BBQ sandwiches and local craft beers, look no further. Very inexpensive bar/sportsbar setting with TVs mounted on the walls and a pool table, bar, dining area, and patio dining area. Seems family friendly, too.

    The Rueben... It's dinner too....

    (5)
  • Josephine B.

I got the fish and chips dinner. It was good and the portions were immense. My only beef was that they charge for water. Instead of bringing the customary ice water when requested, the waitress told me that they only serve bottled water. This leads me to think that they want to make a buck off of something that should be free, or they have a water problem. In any case its annoying to have an extra 2$ added on to a bill for 2 bottles of water. Gimme a break.

    (3)
  • Matthew L.

Great dive airport bar. Reminds me of the bars up in central Wisconsin. Staff seems like they could be hit or miss but I've always had friendly service even when it's busy. Huge portions of pretty decent bar food. Nothing will blow you away but for the money it can't be beat. They do appear to charge for water which is definitely a first for me but with these beer and food prices plus the portion sizes it's hard to complain. Eating here too often would be hazardous to anyone's health but it's hard to resist!

    (4)
  • Jim B.

Not a very welcome feeling, Horrible service, thought about getting a tetanus shot after leaving, so dirty it didn't matter how high they piled the dry corned beef on the sandwich. Close this location and salvage the wheat and rye name before it's too late

Whiskey tango bar, good for getting hammered at cheap prices with mediocre, abundant quantities of food. I've been here many times, what stood out this time was the difference in service from day to night time. Day bartender was friendly, spot on and attentive. While the evening bartender literally walked past me 10 times with out any attention, while I waited with an empty glass. Yeah the portions of food are huge, so what. They are mediocre quality at best. Spotty service combined with mediocre/huge portioned good do not a good bar/restaurant make. Unless you're on anovernight or looking just to get trashed, I'd steer clear of this place. Not sure why it's so highly reviewed.

Waitress: Fast, Friendly, Very Busy! Food: Large amounts of food for the small price. Seriously, three sliders with enough pork to fill a medium crockpot! Burgers, as good as it gets, EVER. Chili Cheese fries, tasty

  • Peter H.

I try to make it here when in Romulus. Great portions, decent food, beer, and all for decent price. Sometimes I think the waitresses want to punch you in the face for being alive, but it gives the place some character. I will be back !!!

    (4)
  • Darwin S.

Food and drinks are cheap. The portions are huge. Not the nicest place I've ever been to, but it's clean and not cramped inside. Our server was clearly not super happy to be working, but she was quick and somewhat attentive. Try the slider meals, they are cheap and much more than filling. Drink specials almost every night too! Will surely be back if I'm in the area again. Btw, everything they serve could easily feed two average people or just absolutely stuff one big hungry guy.

  • Kevin K.

This Wheat and Rye is nothing like the one in Allen Park. The menu is mostly burgers and sandwiches. Yeah the sandwiches are large but.......It's a SANDWICH.......they probably didn't have Gordon Ramsey in back throwin' them together. The service sucked and when she finally got around to getting my bill she must have rounded my bill to the nearest dollar because she didn't even bring all of my change back. If you are ever in the area....go to the Wheat and Rye on Allen rd or the one on Telegraph. You will never go back to this air traveler trap again!

Great portion size and decent food. Service was terrible! Meals didn't come out together...like 30 minutes apart, drink orders were slow, servers were rude.

  • Robert C.

The atmosphere is friendly and space cozy. The service has always been great even when there with big parties. What stands out the most are the huge size of the sandwich's, they always make two meals and the price can not be beat!

  • Marisa G.

We walked from the hotel we were staying at. It was a large amount of food for only $6. It's convenient, laid back and overall good. It's your typical bar spot. Don't come here if you want a fancy dinning experience. Come here for the beers, burgers and music. I'll be coming back on my next layover.

    (4)
  • Cindy P.

Wow, I cannot believe the bad reviews. Wheat and Rye's cheeseburger is my favorite of all times (except my Mom who make the best burger in the world--and she didn't pay me to say that). It is as big as your head, cooked to perfection and fresh meat. Lettuce tomato and onion on the side (extra charge) and a big ole pickle. Ask for the fries to be crispy because if not they're limp. If you don't care for the dive bar experience get a take out. That is what we do 99.8% of the time. They give you enough condiments and napkins.

I was in Detroit for work and decided to give this place a shot and I'm glad I did. I'm from NYC and sandwiches like this can be had all over. It was nice to see it done well away from home. The restaurant itself has a great setting. Nothing fancy, just some tables chairs, a bar, pool tables and jukebox. Very casual and laid back. I was there alone so I ordered the ham and swiss which according the menu is what they were famous for($795). I sat the bar for no more than five minutes and food was ready. I can't comment on wait staff although the bartender that took my order was nice. I was handed my bag to go and I could feel the weight of this sandwich as I made my exit. I had to double check that there was not a small toddler inside. I return to my hotel room and unleash this behemoth of a sandwich and was in awe. Yes! A little bit of NY was here with me. For my personal tastes I would have liked the ham a little more thinly sliced. Not a knock against them just a personal preference. I would have also like a little more cheese with all that meat that was stacked into an onion roll which I thought wasn't as fresh as I would have thought. I know they are known as a hard roll but it was borderline almost stale. Again maybe that's how they're suppose to be. Sammich came with a nice crispy dill which is classic. Also, perhaps my own fault for getting it to go, packet mustard was a yellow vinegar that was called mustard. A nice spicey brown would have set that Virgina ham off. Oh well. All in all I would go back there in a second if my arteries could take it. If not for the food then maybe some drinks and a couple of games of pool.

If you are on a budget, which most Flight Attendants are, this is the place to grab a bite and have a beer. Although I don't drink, I hear the beer is quite good. What I can report on is their food. Don't come with the expectation of a place like a Bob Evans or iHOP, but instead, a place with a fun atmosphere, incredible prices on food and a great place to wind down from a long day. I was blown away by the prices. Living in Los Angeles, I thought the menu was wrong and they left out a zero at the end. My recommendation for a party of four or more, order the nachos. I've never seen an order or nachos like this. Enough said! Check them out, they're worth the visit.

Went for the first time the other day while staying next to the airport on business for the night. Great food, great price and great service! My sandwhich was giant and oh so good. Will go again next time I am flying through Detroit.

-0- TIP. I should've tipped my damn self. Went for a late night meal wanted Joes Crab shack but with the drive they would've closed as soon as I pulled up. The waitress had a dazed wide eye deer in the head lights and dilated pupil look on her, This fool

Wow! What a great find. Enormous food for cheap! 7pm on a Saturday night and nice relaxed environment. Not too rowdy. Great selection of brews. We had pastrami on onion bun and Monster pork.

Food was good, portion sizes were excelled t, but service was seriously lacking. And they charge you almost $2 for a glass of water? WTH?

Food is...let's face it, barely edible. Portions extremely large and service lax at best. To be avoided.

For starters, they charge for water. Apparently they've done it for years. According to the waitress (good service), it's how they balance their low charge for large portions. I give the hostess credit for letting me know ahead of time, and from what I saw, their portions are gigantic. I'd much rather have free water and a reasonable portion. I ordered the super bird and fries, and I was floored when I saw the delivery. The sandwich needed to be served in Bill Laimbeer's shoebox, it was so huge. Was that a bonus? No. It was huge, but it was disgusting. You know how you can just tell when chicken meat is the cheap stuff? It comes with a lot of gristle and tastes like something out of a bag? It's cheap because ITS CHEAP. If it was good chicken, it would taste twice as good, and they could only serve 1/2 of it to make the same amount of money. Then I'd only have a pound of food for lunch instead of 2 pounds. And they could serve it on a bun smaller than an entire loaf of wonderbread formed into a fluffy white hoagie roll. You know, there's a little bit of an obesity problem in the US, and I'm pretty sure the midwest holds its own on this. I heard the burgers are great, but after eating a quarter of my chicken sandwich I have to compare Wheat and Rye with McDonalds. A whole pile of low quality food for cheap, with an added incentive to substitute corn syrup for water, since you're paying anyway. You get what you pay for, and that would be a full, fat gut, and diabetes. I'm clearly not the target market, and I'm really glad other people love the place. Everyone here deserves to enjoy a good meal. As long as I can hide my identity, maybe I'll go back for the beer.

Unpretentious menu with serving sizes big enough for people who work for a living. Great selection of local beer. Friendly service. I only wish they had a few desserts on the menu. Otherwise, I wouldn't change a thing.

Ugh - how much worse could this place get? They have got to be one dollar away from shutting down. The meanest waitresses i've ever encountered - they make towing companies seem friendly and efficient. Bottled water only? I guess they're not too worried about somebody driving away from their lovely establishment drunk as a skunk and crashing into something. Nobody is gonna buy water if beer is cheaper! What a hot mess this joint is. Who cares about the food. Avoid it at all costs!

Went to watch the Nationals playoff baseball game today. This place has always been a great place to watch sports. The game was on buy the radio was playing over the speakers instead of the game audio. When I asked if the game could be played over the speakers, I was told that since I was the only one who asked for it, they wouldn't put it on. This is a sports bar covered wall to wall with televisions. There were four other tables seated at the time and half the people were wearing baseball caps with their favorite team. To be playing the game on tv while Lady Gaga is blasting over the speakers and then claiming I'm the only one who wants to hear the game is ridiculous for a sports bar. Notice I wasn't told that I was the only person who wanted to hear the game, just the only person who asked to have it put on. I ate my burger and left immediately when of they'd had the sound on the game I would have stayed all afternoon and drunk beers. Their loss I suppose but i was very dissapointed that a sports bar would rather play radio pop songs when a playoff game was on the television. I won't be going back ever.

Great place to get drinks! If you get stuck at Detroit Airport for any reason, or if you have a layover, come to Wheat and Rye. Prices are unbeatable and the atmosphere is not what you'd expect in Detroit. Great food and if you're unhappy with anything, let them know and they'll fix it. Can't wait to return to Wheat and Rye.

This is where I go whenever I visit Detroit on a business trip. They are conveniently located near Metro Airport so you can plaster yourself with alcohol (Irish Car Bombs) then fly home the next day. They have an electronic dartboard, 2 pool tables, and a juke box. Their food portions are HUGE!. Their fish and chips and Reuben sandwiches are enormous. The crowd there are in the 30's but it has a very friendly atmosphere. Great place to get big portions of food and have a great time with friends and coworkers.

Despite all the mixed reviews, I had to give it a try. I stayed at a nearby hotel so it was just a 10 minute walk over. Not sure why people are bitching about where it's located or the atmosphere. It is what it is, a great local dive bar with a ton of tv's, pool tables and really huge sandwiches. I got the Wheat & Rye combo (fries /slaw). Meat was flavorful and well seasoned and the bread was perfectly toasted to hold all the freaking meat. Service was prompt and efficient. If you're looking for over friendly chatty servers it isn't here. I don't get to Detroit very often, but when I do, I'll definitely be back.
