We just moved to Kalamazoo and this is one of the first things my daughter said we HAD to explore. I am so glad we did - it's delicious! Walk in and get inspired - there are plenty of teas (I loved the chocolate mole tea), coffee, desserts, CHOCOLATE (a whole case!), and my daughter's favorite, bubble tea. You can sit outside in warmer weather - there's a lovely deck, right by a brook. But inside is cozy - just like a coffeeshop should be - but with the added pleasure of TEA! Highly recommended.

Well...the internet is REALLY fast, they serve Rykse's pie (which is a huge plus at night when Rykse's is closed), and I hear the tea is nice (so says my wife). If it's nice outside there's a pretty cool porch area by a creek to study or read and relax.

Delicious selections and courteous service! Love the chai tea latte and the tiramisu cake! A large selection of loose leaf teas are available for purchase as well as coffee and tea drinks. The staff is always friendly and willing to help. Quickly becoming one of my favorite places on Westnedge

I have stopped in many times over the past 8 years and never sat in the cafe. The past two weeks I was here with a friend and then with my husband and stayed. It has a very comfortable, homey feel almost as though you could be in a beach town somewhere. You don't pick that up when you run in and out fast. I did try the coffee the other day and it was not the best. Won't be doing that again. Last week when the temperature was 70 they put the cushions on the chairs outside. Even though it is on Westnedge, it is set back off the street, it is pleasant to sit outside. There are trees surrounding part of the patio and a brook flows next to it making it easy to ignore the traffic. I fell in love with "Holy Moly" tea. It is dark tea with pieces of chocolate along with real pieces of spices. It has a very distinct chocolate lingering flavor. I am so addicted that now I have to go out of my way to get one. She also has a great selection of loose teas to buy. I did buy some to make at home. And I thought I was a coffee addict. I guess there is room for both. The cafe makes sandwiches also. The table next to us had some and they looked very good. Everybody working there has always be extremely friendly, I think that is what gives it that beach feel. The cafe has a huge variety of chocolates, bars and hand crafted. It also has every kind of pots and accessories made. I almost don't want people to know about the patio because I always want a seat for me! Oh I almost forgot there almost always is gluten free brownies and/or gluten free quick bread, (very good) along with many other pastries.

I love local tea shops that provide exceptional service and quality. Chocolatea is a great place to come and relax in solitude or with friends. My go to drink is a large pot of freshly brewed tea. They have a nice selection of loose leaf teas to choose from ranging from green to black and oolong to roobios (and any more). You pay the same amount of money regardless of the type of tea you choose so I will usually try and pick a more expensive tea to try as I would be less likely to buy it without trying it first. This trip I chose the Jasmine Pearls green tea and was not disappointed. Here's a tip for new tea drinkers - when you get a pot of tea they keep the leaves so that you're able to re-brew them at no additional charge. Some teas re-brew better than others but most are good at least 2x (in my opinion). Some oolongs are good for 3x and more. In addition to the nice selection of teas they also have one of the best selections of "tea gear" in the area. Tea pots, cups, brewing equipment, and decorative plating. Chocolatea has a nice outside seating area for the 4.5 days a year the weather is actually nice in Michigan. It's not an overly large shop but I've never had a hard time finding an open seat. For the true tea snobs, the loose leaf tea quality is good but not great at chocolatea. I'm not advocating Teavana but I've found their tea quality is a step above chocolatea.

Obviously if tea is your thing then this is the place for you. Their selection is huge and you will definitely find at least 3 kinds that you will want to try. Their atmosphere is a typical cafe: chill and welcoming. They have great tea related gifts as well for your fellow tea enthusiasts. You can get it to go or they'll brew up a whole pot for you to enjoy in their cafe while you finish that book, study, or chat with friends. For those dabbling in tea and do not own 3 tea pots and special infusers, do not be intimidated. I am very particular about what kinds of tea I like, but their range is so wide, you should be able to find a couple you would like to try. Just stroll on in and start opening and smelling their canisters of leaves to find the one you want. Bring that up to the counter with you and they'll brew you a cup or package you some to take home.

So compared to places like Biggby this place is a fresh treat. On top of the specialty coffees they have a fantastic selection of bulk teas which are always being rotated because they sell so much of it. If you have a sweet tooth they can accommodate your every need as well. I would say that this place had almost everything that you might want for your little indulgences.

Chocolatea is one of my favorite places to visit. Their tea lattes are creative and one of a kind. My number one pick is the McDreamy with notes of lavender... It is so heavenly to drink. I love going in here just to sit and relax, get some work done and enjoy a nice cup of tea. Also a favorite is the Mozzarella & Tomato sandwich.. It's AMAZING!

Loved this little shop, it's right next to a small creek so you can sit outside and sip your coffee or tea with a little view. Their staff is super friendly and the tea I had was amazing. They also have a large chocolate selection which was really nice. I got a couple pieces for myself and got a box to bring back for my family.

Great place! Huge loose leaf tea selection, I try something new every time. Lots of tea accessories, too. Pots, mugs, infusers, gifts, etc. Then there's the treats! Gourmet chocolates and desserts. My kid loves this place as well.

This is a cool little spot. What I like: The ambiance is warm and inviting. There are a huge variety of loose leaf teas that will please almost any connoisseur. They are divided into different categories and the friendly staff is always ready to help with recommendations. Frequent customer points tally up for in store credits on tea purchases. Great deserts and pies. I recommend the French Silk unless there's only one piece left because then I want it. Free wifi. The outdoor seating area has a small stream running along the deck area. On the days when you can actually sit outside it's a great place to chill. What's just okay: Seating is very limited and sometimes not available. The coffee is alright but not great. But then it is a tea place and not a coffee shop.

Chocolatea is life. I've never been to such a friendly business. The atmosphere is off the chain and the drinks are liquid heaven! The only bad thing is all the choices you have to make! :) My days get brighter when I stop in! I love this place!

I love going to Chocolate tea, especially when I just need to step away from work/school. The tea selection is amazing! The staff is super knowledgable. They go above and beyond to get you what you need! I have made numerous recommendations to friends. Their chicken salad sandwich is THE BEST! It's hard to leave the store without buying everything!! :-)

Anyone who has bubble tea in Kzoo should get 5 stars. Not the best bubble tea I've ever had but it's nice to have some. The chocolate here is good too. Worth a trip. On bad days it's nice to have tea, candy and a pizza from Jacs pizza next door.

This is my first time at this establishment I must say when I first walked in I was a little taken back there was way more teabagging than I can handle if you're looking for a place attend the teabagging pretty hard than this is your place I was impressed with the amount of teabagging that was going on this place definitely a wide variety of teabagging the coffee was really strong I had the ice mocha with the peanut butter shot I couldn't really taste the peanut butter but overall it was your typical ice mocha and it was very good I could see everybody around me was really enjoying the teabagging I saw a man and woman teabagging I saw a gentleman the corner on this Apple Computer really in the teabagging pretty hard the place is really quiet and quaint however I tend to like the chain coffee shops a little bit better to study and do my work and because The tables are a little bit more sturdy and I have more room to work but other than that I will would like to go back and try the chocolate that they have.

I asked my Aunt while I was visiting Portage from Philadelphia if there was anywhere I could get some good tea. She recommended I check out Chocolatea as it was what I was looking for. I was certainly not disappointed. This local business is nestled in a small shopping center near the city of Portage municipal buildings, and the store is well laid out with merchandise, teas, and customer seating. The teas are displayed on the walls, and include low priced standards and more expensive exotics, but nothing really appears to be "overpriced." The tea selection is incredible, and I've had a bunch of different flavors during my visit. The staff is very friendly, helpful, and seem to be excited to work here. They also have a delectable selection of Tea Lattes, Coffee, chocolates, and pastries. If you find yourself in Portage, make sure to come by this great place.

I've never sat in, but love the place. Great desserts, amazing selection of teas, nice gift ideas, yummy chocolates. Its a great locally owned business.

This shop is one of the top things in town that I treasure. Polly is wonderful and so very helpful and opened my life to Tea and for that I will be eternally grateful. If you live nearby you owe it to yourself to stop in. If you are passing through on I-94 or Route 131 you have to take a detour and visit Chocolatea!

Love this place. I get my haircut two doors down, and my husband had to adjust our budget on the "haircut" line because my haircuts ALWAYS include a hot jasmine pearl tea with two dark sea salt caramels. ALWAYS. There's an entire wall of tea, and if you don't get yours to go, they save your leaves for a refill... and I was informed that jasmine pearl makes the best refills, and I can now say that's true. It's almost worth it to stay just for the jasmine pearl refill. Chocolatea is a staple whenever my mom or sister come into town. We all love this place, but they both moved away and miss it terribly. My mom constantly complains there isn't a place similar where she is now. And we'll spend hours sitting there sipping our tea and nibbling on a goodie from the case (from Rykse's). Great place, great tea, love it.

Chocolatea truly my favorite place to be! They are always helpful. Whether I'm going in for a pick me up iced tea to go or a comforting pot of hot tea it always brings me back in again for more. The atmosphere is darling and charming. You will not be let down.

I'm not your typical coffee shop kind of a person, but this place is pretty good, even for an amateur. The staff is friendly and helpful, and explained to me that they specialize in tea lattes (although they have a full coffee selection too.) I took a recommendation and tried the lemon vanilla latte, which I have to say was delicious. Nice and light on a warm late summer morning. If you're hungry, check out the pastries and pies in the display case. I didn't have one but they look to be homemade. They also have a great selection of locally made treats - chocolates and nuts and who knows what else. By far though my favorite thing about this place is their patio. It's cozy and shaded and sits right above a stream. You do get some road noise from S Westnedge, which is a pretty busy street, but if you can get past that it's a perfect place to escape and relax over a cuppa.

If you've been looking for boba (bubble tea, that stuff with the black tapioca balls at the bottom) in the area, look no farther. This beats that place in the mall by miles. The only thing that would improve Chocolatea's bubble tea is one of those machines that seals the cups. They have walls of loose leaf tea. Their Moroccan mint tea is just wonderful--no one else in the area carries anything like it. I'm sure this is no secret--every time I go to get some, there's hardly any left in the canister. I've never had anything but wonderful, friendly service. They want to help. This is the perfect place to stop by for a cup of tea, pick up some loose leaf, purchase a gift, or bring a book or laptop (free wi-fi). They even have outdoor seating overlooking the creek.

Very nice staff, and an amazing selection of teas and chocolates. The peanut butter brownie is insanely rich. Great for the price range.

  • Nicole V.

This tea and "coffee" store was just okay. They don't use whole chocolate in their mochas, but substituted syrup instead, which is unfortunate for a place called "Chocolatea". Their coffee is brewed ahead of time, so at 10:00 a.m. my cup was pre-brewed and already in a coffeepot. Mr. MVP had an Italian Soda, which he said tasted like an "Italian Soda". I appreciate I am extremely fussy when it comes to my food and beverages, but this is an upscale tea and coffee shop, so we expected a little MORE. In a pinch we'd go back, but Chocolatea will not be on our list of favorites for the future.

LOVE THIS PLACE. At least once every weekend when I am out and about running errands, I make it a point to stop at this little shop and get an iced tea, a baked good or two, and maybe some loose leaf for my collection at home. The staff is always super friendly. They have a rewards program to earn free drinks. The shop is always clean, comfortable, and just the right amount of ambient noise from kitchen things and people chatting to bring some homework or hang out with friends.

I'm from Boston where coffee shops are a dime a dozen. This cafe is definitely a diamond in the rough. Be mindful that this is a specialty tea shop that serves coffee. Coffee is not the specialty and tends to be more of an afterthought. That being said, I really don't like the taste of coffee so it was such a delight for me to find a tea cafe only 3 miles away from my new home. It is better than most of the coffee shops I frequented in Boston in terms of the quality and ambiance. Plus you get the home town feel and hospitality that is common among Michiganers.

This place is a gem. It goes without saying that if you are a tea-lover, you need to check this place out. They have a huge selection of loose-leaf teas, all lining the walls in glass jars. If you're not quite sure what kind of tea you want, they will help you pick something. I have to admit that I am not a tea-drinker. But at Chocolatea, I finally found a tea I enjoyed drinking! Mango green tea, who would have thought. They also have a small selection of coffee beverages. Let me just say that they are VERY well prepared. The coffee drinks taste really, really good. Easily some of the best in the area. And of course, they have a wide selection of chocolate treats and other baked goods. It's all absolutely delicious. And the baked goods are served in a pretty generous way. I asked for a lemon bar and I think I got the equivalent of four normal-sized bars. Staff has always been friendly and helpful too. I love it!

I really wanted to love this place! Right now I have a bad habit of writing reviews only when I have a significantly bad experience, and I should write more positive reviews I know.. But it doesn't remove from the fact that this is an honest 3-star review from a generally easy to please person. Anyway that said, this place is pricey for normal tasting bubble tea ($6 for a medium, Taro) although maybe the price is more because of the ambience I guess -- which is definitely nicer than any cafe I've seen in Kalamazoo. Good alternative place to hang out if good ole fashioned Water Street is not your thing at that moment. It's 3 stars for me though, because after I finished my bubble tea and a scone, I asked for a cup of hot water and.. They charged me for it. Who charges for hot water? Does it merit a 3 star review, maybe not. But it really turned me off. It doesn't come off as very welcoming and the policy was completely random to me. Combined with the average bubble tea and average scone, this place is nothing special. Too bad it's the only place I know around here with bubble tea, but other than that I am not that blown away.

Okay, so my review is based on coffee and chocolate - haven't had the tea yet. I finally visited this great little shop this week and went back a few days later... really I was in the area... I didn't make a special trip. I will admit that I was fantasizing about the dark caramel with sea salt in between my visits, however. I have not found many places in Kalamazoo with good coffee. Good coffee at reasonable prices is almost non-existent. Chocolatea has good coffee at a reasonable price. I'm not a coffee snob - I'll drink whatever is around, but I do appreciate quality when I can get it. Especially when I can also afford a chocolate to go with it! Maybe they should call it Chococafetea. Okay, maybe not. But they could. Service was great. Friendly. Lots of tables, a couple couches and a lovely little patio next to Portage Creek. Next time I'm going to do tea shopping - need to try the Earl Grey - and will have a scone or something. If all that works out they have a devoted fan for life.

I heart Chocolatea! Every visit here is a treat for the eyes, nose, and tongue. If you are lucky, their giant mobile teacup is parked in the front and this is a fun sight for kids and adults alike. Once inside, your eyes are drawn to the wonderful tea goodies (tea pots, bags, spoon rests, strainers, glasses, mugs, even surprisingly yummy tea-flavored mints) that are tastefully displayed throughout the floor. Your nose is pleasantly barraged by the scents of fresh coffee (which is quite tasty), baked sweets, and the bajillion teas that line two walls. For novices who are new to tea culture, the best part of Chocolatea is the ability to do tastings, much like you would at a winery. When it's busy they ask that you choose up to three kinds of tea you would like to sample that they prepare for you, perfectly proportioned and times. Just take them off the wall, sniff for your favorites, and ask a barista to help with the rest. You can purchase loose teas by self-weighing and bagging at the tasting station. You then take these to the cashier to ring out along with the pot of your favorite choice, accompanied by a piece of scrumptious pie or quiche. Don't forget to ask for a frequency card and definitely don't miss out on trying at least once slice of chocolate covered bacon. Sounds gross, is "interesting," but it's like a Lay's potato chip - you can't have just one. Did I already mention that I heart Chocolatea?

If you like black coffee their brew is great. If you like tea they have a great selection of loose tea leaves. If you don't like tea you should stop in and ask for a sample because you will change your mind. I use to live near a Teavana which is where I fell in love with tea but that store is no where near Portage. So when I first visited Chocolatea and saw their huge selection of loose tea leaves I became very excited. It may seem pricey when you buy tea leaves but a few leaves go a long way. A tablespoon of leaves will make a couple cups of tea and you can "steep" them more than once in one sitting. I have a thermos with a strainer that I use at work. I put a few leaves in the bottom, snap in the strainer, and I probably refill the thermos with hot water 3-4 times before I have to change the leaves.

Cute little shop with superbly friendly people, a large selection of tea, a delectable looking chocolate and desserts and indoor and outdoor seating. Not a chain, not your typical Midwest donut shop. Just a wonderful little find. Thanks, Yelp!

I love this place. It's got a whole lot of tea and just as much charm. I was blown away by their über selection of teas. Apparently it's the largest in southwest Michigan and every one of them I've tried has been amazing. The staff is always very friendly and it's a great atmosphere to hang out for a bit. In addition to a wide selection of teas and tea accessories you can check out some great specialty chocolates and other sweets. It's a really charming little shop with a ton of options so there's bound to be something for everyone.

I went to Chocolatea for the first time the other day. So wonderful!! EXTREMELY helpful staff, delicoius chocolates (I got 3 of the $2.60 "top shelf" chocolates, some dark chocolate covered ginger and some dark chocolate covered expresso beans), the drinks were great too (I had the Cloud 9 and highly recommend it!!). There's an entire wall of loose leaf teas in canisters that they sell by the ounce, tea bags, tea pots and tea cups as well. I'll be making Chocolatea a regular stop when in the K-zoo area!!
