    Worst restaurant experience I have had EVER. EVER!!!! We had reservations on MSU homecoming weekend. While busy, there were still plenty of tables open. There were a lot of small missteps that could be overlooked but none of us could overlook the 1.5 hours from the time we placed our order until we got our dinner. Worse than the wait was the attitude of the manager when we approached her to let her know how long we had been waiting. She made it extremely clear that she was busy, did not care in the least and had better things to do with her time than make sure any of her customers were happy. Clearly the table next to us was having similar problems and getting similar results. Once our food did arrive, half the food on our plates was hot and half cold--a definite issue in the kitchen. One of our guests had her dinner prepared wrong and when we brought that up to the manager, she would not even offer to fix it for her. The food was unspectacular to say the least. Nothing that was worth the wait nor price. This was my first and last time here for like the manager of this establishment, I have better ways to waste my time than being in Gilbert & Blakes.

    It's probably good that this review isn't being written IMMEDIATELY after having left the restaurant. It would have been nasty. The service here is terrible. Terrible. A lot of reviewers are giving the benefit of the doubt - it was a holiday, they were busy, etc. Not on my visit. After an exhausting morning meeting that extended into lunch, I ended up at Gilbert and Blake's at about 1:15 on a Friday with 6 of my coworkers. We were seated right away, and there were maybe 2 or 3 other occupied tables. When our server came over, we indicated that we were in a hurry and ordered our sandwiches right away... Now, maybe it was the fact that I was STARVING, but a lot of the stuff on the menu looked good and I had a hard time deciding. I resisted the lobster grilled cheese and went with the portabella wrap sandwich. The 7th person at our table to order inquired, "what do you have for sides?". Apparently, there is a choice between fries, salad, and a fruit cup that the server completely forgot to tell us about. So, we went back around the table...he left promising drinks and bread. A few minutes later, the waiter returned to ask if I had wanted the "stuffed portabella" appetizer or the "portabella wrap" sandwich. The sandwich. When my bill came, I'd been charged for both! I actually thought at one point that I had imagined hearing him say we'd get bread before our meal, and asked my coworkers if they'd heard the same thing...It had been so long since we'd seen him, and there was no indication of any bread. It finally came in a white paper bag, as others have mentioned. It was GREASY. I was so hungry, it was good...if I'd been here on a date, I might think it was gross. When our food FINALLY came it was...fine. The fries were soggy though, which was a real disappointment. It was a, 'screw the diet, I'm getting fries" kind of day, and then...they sucked. The fish tacos came with a side of rice, even though the server had asked and my co-worker indicated he wanted fries (I think he didn't actually have a choice?). In the end, we were there for over 90 minutes. The two members of our party that were flying out of metro were starting to get worried they'd miss their flight. Even though we were STANDING UP at the table, clearly getting ready to go, it still seemed to take forever to get our credit card receipts back to sign. "Oh, did she not bring those back over to you yet? I'll go get them." Seriously. We all walked out saying, "never again." Our coworker that recommended the place was embarrassed. I'd checked yelp, but I didn't want to rock the boat by mentioning that this place had a 2 star review...next time I'll speak up.

    I'm not a huge steak-eater, but I've been to some very nice steakhouses in my day - this is not one of them. That being said, it's not a bad place. I came here with a private party in the private room in front. It took a very long time for drinks and food; they probably could have used an extra waiter or two in the room. They serve bags of warm garlicky bread, which is delicious and will totally ruin your appetite for dinner. I ended up getting the lobster ravioli in saffron sauce (I'm a sucker for saffron) and it was good, and a perfect-sized portion - not too big, not too small. Others at my table ordered various steaks and were not very impressed. This place is decent and the prices are pretty reasonable, but I guess you get what you pay for.

    Been twice. First time was not impressed. Seared Ahi Tuna appetizer was too dry, too think and too well done. The middle was barely pink. (On my next trip i saw them deliver the same appetizer to another customer and it looked perfect). So I know they can serve it right...just not the one I ordered. I ordered the entree of sake marinated Chilean Sea Bass and it was good. The scalloped taters were a little salty and the potatoes did not seem cooked all the way through. If it was based on this visit alone... 3 stars. The second visit was at happy hour. My dinner consisted of appetizers and a couple beers. I shared some appetizers with my coworkers. Stuffed mushroom tasted burned. We were talking about it and the bartender overheard us. She immediately ordered a new one. Very nice and unexpected! (She is awesome! Very nice and very attentive.) The second order came out and it had the same taste. This time I paid more attention and figured out that the balsamic reduction was burned. Unfortunately, #2 tasted like #2 the second time around...disappointing. The calamari was good. Typical variety I see at most places. Lots of the tentacles and soggy coating (I prefer the crispier type). Not that it was bad, just that style. The french onion soup was pretty good. One of my favorites. Not disappointed. I'll return if in Lansing again.

    One would think by the atomsphere here the food would be good...not! Our server made several mistakes, including bringing me a dirty spoon with my soup. By the time he came back he was bringing our entree's, the soup was cold... The worst part of my experience, I ordered the lobster carbonara and it arrived without the lobster......by the time this was fixed by dining compainion was finished eating. The lobster and the pasta were over cooked, it was like eating paste. I was very disappointed and regretfully paid $70 for our meal. I won't return, after all who wants to over pay for crappy food!

    Although G&B's was dripping with an undeserved arrogance and pretentious atmosphere, at least it is trying to class up the Lansing area. Though maybe they should start by aiming for quality food and service. The bread was brought to us in a white paper bag and the grease from their over-buttering of it had made the bag translucent before it even got to us. Gross. I should clarify that our trip to G&B's was in 2008, so I'm a bit late on my review since I just not joined Yelp. Hopefully things have changed, but I'm not going to get a second mortgage on my house just to go eat at a place that I already gave a shot and was SORELY disappointed in. If you didn't catch the sarcasm, it is extremely expensive, and undeservedly so. I am all for paying a high price when the food is amazing....this was terrible though. They even added a chipotle-esque spice to my green beans. That was weird. All of the food was seasoned strangely. I'm sure someone along the way told them, "Mmm...this is....different!" And they took it to mean good, but do not be confused, in this case, different is not equal to "good." The service was slow to recognize that we were there, which was odd considering that the restaurant was almost empty, and we should have taken that as our forewarning.

    Been here twice in the past month, one togo and one for a late meal solo. First, I have to commend all the restaurants that attempt to bring a fine dining experience to the Lansing area, as there are only a few of such places, and fewer of those that are actually worth it. The bread at G&B is AWESOME. Served in a long white paper bag, it is warm and wonderful. Although they serve it with a side dish of butter, there is no need for it. Togo: I'm sure this is a place that rarely gets take out orders, because the clientel and the fare is not geared towards this. Yes, I actually ordered a Ribeye, having a hankering for a nice steak, but only because I had come from a trip to Minneapolis/St. Paul and had an incredible steak at Mancino's and a couple at the St. Paul Grill. Those steaks made me really miss having a GREAT steak. For Gilbert and Blakes, it was not bad. Cooked med-rare appropriately and flavorful. Not earth-shattering, by any means, but tasty nevertheless. More recently, my solo dining experience, I had the Mussels a la Blake to start, which were a little disappointing. The mussels were on the dry side, though there was some liquid on the bottom of the dish at least, to dip the mussles in. It was prepared in a standard fashion with white wine, garlic and a white clam sauce, although it could have used more flavor in my opinion. For the main entree, I had the Shrimp and Lobster Linguine. Unfortunately, they were out of Linguine, so I had to go with an angel hair pasta, which was fine. Tossed in a red bell pepper cream sauce, it was also slightly disappointing in that the sauce was not more flavorful. The shrimp and lobster were delicious however, and contrasted the sauce, though I would have rather had those flavors more infused with the pasta and sauce. I will still return to Gilbert and Blakes because I think there are plenty of other dishes worth trying and hopefully exceeding my expectations.

    This place gets points for fitting in a group of 4, without reservations, on Valentine's day. We sat at the bar, but they served a full menu and it was a little more relaxed than the rest of the restaurant. Also points for the tasty drinks and helpful bartenders. I would highly recommend the BBQ ribs (great BBQ sauce) and the Cowboy steak both with the mashed potatoes. Oh, and the bread! Make sure that they give you plenty of bread. I'm not sure why it was so good, but there was something about the buttery warm goodness of their rolls that is to die for! On the down side, the fish was lacking, and sadly, the rice was crunchy! I'm sure this was due to the busy Valentine's day rush, but it was a little disappointing. All in all, we had a very nice meal with some very good cocktails beforehand and a lovely glass of wine during the meal.

    Have been here several times and the best I can say I'd stick to appetizers and desserts, which are decent. Entrees are hit or miss--mostly miss. Every steak or chop I've had at g&b has been gristly, dry and overcooked. Oh, and overpriced. Save your money and cook at home.

    Went for a graduation dinner and the place was packed, so I'll overlook the inattentive service as what you have to expect on such an insane night. What I can't overlook is the incredibly disappointing food. Between the four of us we sampled the mimosa salad, calamari, mussels a la blake, swordfish oscar, NY strip steak, and crab cakes. While certain dishes like the salad and swordfish were fine, others were incredibly bad. The calamari was easily the worst I've ever seen or tasted - it had been fried for so long, the rings of squid were as hard and crusty as overcooked curly fries. The mussels looked and tasted as though they were clearly frozen, not fresh. Most disappointing might have been the strip steak. Not only was it woefully under-seasoned, it was tough and chewy - not what you expect from the "nice" steak and seafood restaurant in town. Perhaps the kitchen was overwhelmed just as the servers were. But if you are going to position yourself as a destination restaurant for special events, you have to be able to handle the business. While I don't need a waiter doting on me to enjoy my meal, I do need a kitchen that can properly execute. Final comment: they serve their bread in a white paper bag. At first you think, oh, this is nice, the bread must be fresh out of the oven. But minutes later you are left with greasy paper bag sitting in the middle of your table. Dumbest bread presentation I've ever seen - no consideration for the customer experience.

    I come in every now and then for lunch. Lobster grilled cheese and tomato soup is good. Good salads too - I like Blue cheese wedge salads and theirs didn't disappoint but then again its a hard thing to screw up. The bread was buttery warm and fresh. The service has always been pleasant. Ive had the braised short ribs for dinner and they were good. Surprised at the low reviews.

    Food is mediocre to less than average! Steaks are not seared properly, soup (clam chowder) was bland, kid's chicken tender was very dry, dinner rolls/bread was extremely greasy. Nice and clean on the inside, but food sucks! Can't believe this place is still around.

    Went in last night for dinner with 6 others - from some of the reviews here it seems like a completely different place. All our dinners were excellent - we were passing them around. No one had a steak - we all had fish or pasta. Everything excellent. Waitress was very attentive (though admittedly not very busy). Overall because every single meal was very very good I give it 5 starts. Will definitely go back.

    I was very happy with the food. I did not give a fourth star because the service at the bar while we waited for our table was awful. I understand that the bartenders were busy, but it should not take five minutes for them to even acknowledge us. The hostess was excellent. Our waiter was great. The sommelier was very helpful. The food was good. We really enjoyed the fresh baked bread. I had the ribs which had a unique sauce. Not the best around, but worth a try.

    Did eat there once, and although I'm not going to pretend to remember the exact details, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this wasn't terrible, so I have to balance the other review with mine. We were there on an off-night, but it seemed ok. Worth trying, judge for yourself...

    The best word to describe this restaurant is bland. The service was good and fast but didn't know the beers on tap and the second most flavorful thing I had was the water. Overall not bad just sort of meh. A little louder in the dining room than you would expect for restaurant that is supposed to be a higher end place. Would I visit here again. Most likely not.

    Was there for dinner this evening. The staff was friendly and courteous. The atmosphere was nice and the place is quite clean and fresh looking. I would give this place a bit higher marks but found the food to be just ok. The food was better than average for sure but not great. I would certainly visit in the future again.

    A notch up casual. I came here during graduation weekend so it was pretty busy. Food selection was simple, a bit pricey. To start with we had the mussels and calamari. Both were good. The house bread was served warm, it was good, though it has too much seasoning. I had the Chilean Sea Bass which cost around $29. It was sweet, not what I was expecting...too sweet for a main course I think. Other members of my party had the steak dishes and they all liked it. Desert was a bit better with the molten lava chocolate cake and a cup of espresso. Service was good. Eventhough the place was busy our waiter came back to check on us time and again. Overall Ok place to have dinner.

    My husband and I were going to a show at the Wharton Center and decided to have a nice dinner beforehand. We had a coupon to G & B's so came here. The service was very friendly and quick. The food was alright - a bit too expensive for the quality/creativity. There are other, more unique and cozy places I would probably pick before coming back.

    Went there for a special occasion. Group of 10, only people there. Horrible service, waited 20 minutes for drinks and another 45 for cold food. Never saw the waitress in between. Contacted management later that week, was told they would contact me.......never heard from them.

    My now husband and I had our rehearsal dinner at Gilbert & Blake's this past week. It was absolutely phenomenal. The service was fantastic, the food was tremendous, and drinks great as well. We had a custom menu made and they even put out candles for our tables. The spinach and artichoke dip was to die for, as was the Kasu, NY Strip and Chicken Cordon Bleu. The Traverse Cherry salad was delicious, as was the clam chowder. And don't even get me started on the au gratin potatoes and the carrot cake. YUM! Craig and I often comment to each other that we are just DYING for a restaurant like Gilbert & Blake's down here in Texas. We are never disappointed!

    Cozy atmosphere, trendy, high society feel. I'm a MSU student on a limited budget so I was nervous when my fiance made reservations because I heard they are expensive. We went there for our anniversary and I was presently surprised to see when I arrived they had a table pre-set with a candle to set the mood. Our server was very knowledgeable in every aspect of their service. The food was excellent and we were brought a free desert to celebrate the occasion. My only criticism was the price, just under $100 for the two of us plus a big tip for the service. I would certainly suggest Gilbert and Blake's for any special occasion.

    We were in town for a college hockey game and were staying the Hampton inn & suites just behind the restaurant. We asked the host at the hotel if the restaurant was any good any she said it was. We agree!!! Started the meal with mussels in a garlic butter sauce. It was very good and the bread was awesome. Next a wedge salad with blue cheese, etc and it was also well presented and delicious. I had the haystack ribeye and my wife the salmon in jalapeño mustard glaze. Both were excellent portions and very tasty. Not sure where the 1 star ratings are coming from .... It was a solid 4 stars for us.

    Came here for a work dinner & we were seated right away in a little cozy corner next to the window. The service was decent, the waitress was attentive but, for a nearly empty restaurant, our host didn't provide us with enough menus. We were a table of 7 with only 5 menus. 8 if you count the fly that kept us company all night. I'm not able to comment on my coworkers dishes but ill tell you why it's a 1star in my book. The complimentary bread was warm & buttery but it was chewy & tasted stale at best. I ordered the Chilean sea bass, which included a vegetable stir fry & basmati rice. The fish came out & looked really good. It had a nice brown crust & a little pool of butter beneath it. That's where the goodness ends. The fish was under cooked. I like sushi & all but I was expecting more of a flakey center than sashimi. The buttery goodness became overwhelming after the 2nd bite & it seemed to ooze out of the fish. The basmati rice was lacking flavor & the stir fry veggies had some pieces that were less cooked than others. I wasn't impressed by Gilbert & Blake's. the service was pretty good & the restaurant had a decent beer selection with quite a few local beers. However, that's we're it ends.

    Took my DW out for dinner to Gilbert and Blake's. The server was very prompt and attentive, but not smothering. Just the way I like it. We both ordered the Haystack Ribeye. It's a bone-in ribeye (18 ounce), piled high with thin, crispy onions. Quite delicious. It also comes with red pepper aioli drizzled on it, though we ordered ours on the side. Super flavorful. The steaks were cooked perfectly to order and were everything I want in a ribeye. For sides, I ordered the Cajun brown rice (nice zip to it) and DW ordered the fingerling potatoes. Both delicious and cooked perfectly. I've always been a fan of their bread/rolls, and this time was no different. They come in a paper sleeve, soft and warm. I don't even use butter on them. Overall, an excellent dinner. In all, we have eaten there maybe half a dozen times and have never had a bad meal.

    The food was pretty good, but the prices were extremely high. Our waitress wasn't the most attentive and didn't check back often enough to see how we were doing. Not sure i would recommend this place to others.

    I took my girlfriend here last night on a date. Neither of us had heard of the place before. We had only driven by and figured we would give it a try sometime. It was a Saturday night and the place was maybe 25% full, which worried me. I always get nervous when a place like this isn't at least at 75% capacity on a Saturday. It took until after we got our drinks and after we ordered to get our bread. The waiter told us he was waiting for more to come out of the oven. Why wouldn't a place like this always have bread ready to go? I ordered the perch, she had jambalaya. Both of the meals were delicious and I thought we got an excellent amount for the price. The jerk rice is excellent, I highly suggest it as a side. With the exception of the late bread, it was a good experience. Quality food for a reasonable price. It was a great start to a great date.

    Wife and I wanted a nice lunch to celebrate a big day. We were in the area. This place looked upscale enough. On the menu, I delight to see 13 bucks for a lobster sandwich. Sweet deal, right? Nope, I got what I paid for, which in this case is FOOD POISONING. FOOD POISONING FOOD POISONING FOOD POISONING 5 hours and even more bathroom trips after eating the sandwich, I am quite certain it's food poisoning and that it was caused by the sandwich (I had nothing else but oatmeal all day, which I have every day). I call the restaurant and the manager tells me the lobster is previously frozen and that they have had no other complaints of food poisoning. Then he tells me that it's probably not food poisoning, which "takes 8 hours to set in", and that "it probably just didn't agree with your stomach". What a LIAR. LIAR LIAR LIAR According to the NIH, "The most common types of food poisoning generally cause symptoms within 2 - 6 hours of eating the food." ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedh… I will certainly never eat here again.

    Where to begin... I took my wife to G&B for our anniversary. We saw they were participating in Restaurant Week and decided to try them out rather than go with our standby chain places like Outback, Olive Garden or PF Chang's. From our house, it took about an hour to get to their location. We were really excited about trying G&B as we had driven by several times,and after seeing the menu online we thought it would be the perfect place to celebrate out anniversary. To start with, we had to wait five minutes before anyone even greeted us. This was on a slow Monday night, where only a handful of tables had patrons, so being busy wasn't even in the picture. When we were greeted, presumably by the manager and seated, we had to listen to a long-winded push to sample/buy a glass or bottle of wine.I'm not a wine drinker, but I considered trying something until we got the hard sell before I was even able to sit down. We then sat..... and waited... and waited some more for our server to arrive. She finally did show up to give us our menus (these were limited option menus for Restaurant Week.) She asked if we wanted something to drink and proceeded to tell us again about their wine and beer and mixed drink selections.... but never gave us a drink menu to see what they actually had. We asked for waters to start with, figured she'd return with waters and a drink menu. No dice. We waited another five minutes at least before she returned with our waters. I then had to ask for a drink menu as we ordered our food. I then waited another 5 minutes to see the drink menu (which was inadequate - I appreciate that you have 50 different varieties of wine, but don't tell me you have microbrews, etc and not have a listing of those on your menu as well.) I ended up ordering an old-fashioned (they call it a new-fashioned), which as I later found out was a $9 drink, and frankly it was mediocre. We were brought some bread in a greasy paper sack (I talked later with a friend and apparently we should have also been served some dipping olive oil or butter, but that never appeared) and our wedge salads. I must say I enjoyed the salad. It and dessert were the high points of the meal. Now to the entrees: My wife ordered the Tuscan Chicken and I got the Steak Diane. The plating was quite nice, and my wife loved the chicken... the chicken itself. As far as the rest of what was on the plate, not so much. Our server asked how I wanted the steak tips prepared. I ordered them rare to medium rare. What I got were over-cooked, beyond well-done chunks of borderline beef jerky, doused in a red wine demi. Beyond the overpowering flavor of the demi, the meat had no taste to it. My wife's mashed potatoes were cold. Not just cool, COLD. My mashed potatoes, on the other hand, were warm to hot, but were so dry, I wondered if they were instant, but hadn't had enough milk added to them. There was also no flavor to them. I would have expected a garlic taste or something, but no, just plain potatoes. Also served with my meal was a mixed vegetable medley. Basically it was a bunch of yellow and orange bell pepper slices, red onion, a single broccoli crown, and sliced summer squash. The interesting thing here was, despite my beef being horribly overcooked, the vegetables were raw. Not just a little undercooked, but basically raw, as if they had been thrown in a pan with some olive oil for 30 seconds and then dumped onto my plate. As far as the overall service experience, it was pathetic. Our server had a 4-top and us to take care of. That was it. Yet we had to wait a long time for drinks, she never checked on us during the actual course of the meal, and just seemed really apathetic. The only bright spot, aside from the salad, was dessert. My wife got the cheesecake and I ordered the lava cake. Both were well-prepared and extremely tasty. Unfortunately, the delicious desserts were not enough to make up for the fact that I felt upon walking out of G&B that I had just wasted $70. If you expect people to spend $20-40 or more per entree, plus another $5-7 for a simple salad, and quite possibly drop as much as $200 on a bottle of wine, your service and overall preparation must be top-notch. G&B severely missed the mark. Long story short, we won't be back.

    The light coming in through the many windows made a nice contrast to the dark tables in the dining room. The staff was friendly and our server was very accommodating. Everyone in our group ordered the French onion soup. The soup was very thick and reduced with a red wine. Others in my group liked how thick the soup was, I did not. I ordered the filet mignon, my dining companions ordered the Kasu Chilean sea bass and crab cakes. The food was very good. The side dish of choice for two of us was the au gratin potatoes, they were the best I ever had. Dinners also came with steamed green beans which were cooked perfectly. Everything was excellent.

    My advice would be to tell you to find a different restaurant. This one is over priced, and delivers slow service. I told the waitress I was allergic to green peppers, and then she served us an appetizer with....green peppers. I told the lame Manager about my experience and he was as clueless as the Waitress and did not make any attempt bring us back. Never going back and with leadership like I experienced, I am amazed that this restaurant is still in business.

    I'm also unsure of the negative reviews! I think this place has great food and excellent service and management. Once, our meal was subpar, and without even complaining, the bartender picked up on it, spoke to the manager and had it removed from the bill. But it's rarely subpar, I love this place!

    I'm not sure why the reviews are so bad for this place! I ordered the seafood platter which had sweet chili glazed shrimp, scallops on Japanese seaweed salad, blackened salmon fillet, asparagus and basmati rice. The salmon and scallops were both fresh and tasty, but I was not as big of a fan of the shrimp. The rice and asparagus were average but OMG the bread in the bag is amazing and buttery! So good. Our hostess was super sweet and attentive the whole night! Very cosy and comfortable atmosphere and nice location!

    After having read several less than stellar reviews, I was hesitant about dining here (didn't want to spend a lot for a mediocre meal). My husband, our friends & I had a fabulous time & I have NO regrets about our evening there! The appetizers were delicious, from the crab cakes to the baked Brie to the Ahi tuna! Our entrees arrived in a timely manner & the presentation of all the dishes was gorgeous!!!! Dessert did not disappoint, either! Wine & conversation flowed & Lindsey, our server, was both attentive & efficient. I understand the restaurant has a new manager & suffice it to say that I will give him credit for a wonderful night! I can't wait to go there again!

    The place looks nice when you walk in but it has a very funky (not good funky though) vibe. Having a seat at the bar the place just seems unfriendly and clique'ish. I have no idea how to explain it but you just get the feeling that everyone in there comes in all the time and they don't particularly like interlopers. Moving beyond the atmosphere to the food...it's expensive for Lansing. I spend a fair amount of time in this area and I'd have to say this is one of the more expensive places I've been to in Lansing. Now, is it expensive by big city comparison - no - but for Lansing - yes. I ordered some sort of white-fish entrée. It came out very hot and had a generous portion of fish. The taste was decent and it had a nice serving of garlic mashed and some veggies for sides. Overall the food was slightly above average. Net - bad vibe, decent food but overpriced. There are far better options.

    Gilbert and blakes tonight was very disappointing. Thank god for the new server we requested Lindsey! She was the best part. We come here 2 times per year and have always had a great experience. This was different. Our first waitress came out with a British accent that disappeared after the first two sentences. Awful service, didn't know the menu or specials. Then the partial owner, lance, questioned me on why I didn't like the waitress, and never came back to see how we were or if our experience was better. Really has went down hill- disappointed to say the least! Decent awful service - except for Lindsey.

    Great chicken sandwich and very friendly, accommodating staff! They brought us a lunch menu during dinner time on Sunday since we weren't looking for a big meal. Thanks!
