Dons of traverse city in novi Michigan is not a good restaurant. The service is slow even with three tables of customers. They messed up on my burger three times in a row. We called the manager and he said they would make me a new one but it took forever to get it that we decided to cancel my order.

I came here with a friend for lunch yesterday, and it's been ages since I've been here. My friend wanted to come here because she absolutely love their malts, and I love the diner atmosphere. We swung in and it was like a step back in time. I love places like this, and it's always a good time. Plenty on the menu to choose from, fair prices and the waitress was fun and outgoing. I went with the grilled cheese with a Sprite, and my friend had the coney dog with a malt. The malt looked awesome! Bill was not bad, and the waitress cashed us out right at the table. Will be back in the future!

I would think when you charge so much for a burger, it could atleast be made of fresh beef and not a pre made GFS type burger. Fabulous Fries as they call them are just frozen steak fries and they were not even seasoned. Salt wont stick to fies after the oil dries. We also ordered 2 hot dogs that were just microwaved. Not even close to food. I got a malt and it was so thick the malt was in big powdered chucks. NOT CHEAP and not worth it. I always wondered why it was so dead in there. Now I know. Never again.

The hubby and I stopped by here this evening after dinner for a snack. We had been working outside, so we were hungry! We got two shakes (cherry and chocolate) and three sliders with fries. The service was great and the waitress was very friendly and attentive. The environment is 100% diner. Every idea you had of little, homey diner, this place fills it. The stainless walls, the menu of burgers, sandwiches and homemade favorites... It all reads diner! The shakes came quickly and were delicious. I loved my chocolate shake. You can barely get it through a straw, they were so thick. And they make the shakes right in front of you with good ingredients (no fake stuff). My hubby's cherry shake was made with real cherries and he said it was perfect. Our sliders were decent. This is where the score drops a little. The sliders had good flavor, but were a bit dry. Other reviews here say the actual "bigger" burgers are awesome. I'm willing to give it another shot. The sliders we had were decent, but if you want good sliders in the area, go to Sliderz in South Lyon. The French fries were typical fries out if the box. Their other specials looked good. Ill be back to try a bigger burger and their coney dogs. They also had a special for homemade meatloaf and mashed potatoes. It looked like a perfect diner meal: homey and good. Nothing gourmet, but like mama would make. I'll be back to try a few of their other items and definitely be back to have the milkshakes again!

We went to Don's of Traverse City in Traverse City, MI a few years ago while cruising up north and their food was excellent. We ran across Don's in Novi, MI and their burgers are just as good. I had to try the 3D burger from the specials menu and it turned out to be three half pound patties and quite a mouthful. I ended up giving my wife one patty for her jalapeno burger and we both had a nice size burger. The fries were very hot and tasty. I'm going with 4 stars and I'll be back...

The hubby and I ventured here for lunch last weekend. We stepped back in time for sure upon walking in. It is a very retro, all aluminum 1950s style diner with a laid back atmosphere. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. I ordered two sliders (1.49 each; what a bargain!), a 1/4 lb burger for the hubby, and fries to share. The sliders were bigger in size than most places I felt and tasted great. The meat was flavorful and lean which is a must for me, I am very picky!! The fries were deliciousssss with a crispy exterior and creamy interior; also made to order because they arrived piping hot. I am a fry girl and these were definite winners. We both enjoyed our quick lunch and will most certainly be back =]

I had lunch at Don's of Traverse City today. it was set up to look like and old fashioned rail car turned into a diner. Did not see any apparent reference to Don or Traverse City so do not know the history. The friendly waitress guided me to the other side of the diner when she saw I was looking for a booth but were none in the first area I wondered into. I sat down and previewed the menu. Very simplistic basic fare. I asked what the specialty of the house was. If she told me it was fresh made pie made of Cherry's grown in Traverse City, I would have ordered a slice right then and there(and...I never order dessert). She rattled off a few of the days specials and I told her I would need a couple minutes. I did not know what traditional diner car food was so I considered the open faced turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy as well as the club sandwich, but ultimately went with the Philly steak sandwich. I made sure it had provolone and wanted some jalapenos in addition to the green pepper and onions just to kick it up a notch. She asked if I wanted fries and I did go along with that recommendation. The French fries were thick cut had a nice crust on the outside soft inside and piping hot. I was glad I got them. You could tell they were just frozen pre cut fry and serve variety but they were good. The Sandwich had good flavor, it was hot and a sufficient amount of gooey melted cheese. But...no au'ju . The waitress disappeared behind the wall for a while so I could not even ask for some if they had it. By the time she cam back I only had a couple bites left so was not worth it at that point. It could have had more meat or maybe just fresher cooked meat. It definitely was not "just sliced" and cooked ribeye steak. The hoagie bun was toasted on the inside and could have been fresher too. Not a bad place, not a bad meal...was not wowed at all...and left thinking maybe I should have went with the open faced turkey and a slice of pie.

Overpriced for sure. Service is mediocre, more concerned with chatting with the cook about graduation than making sure we had drink refills halfway thru or meal. Food was good but definitely not worth the cost.

Disappointing. There was literally 1 other party in the place and the waitress still screwed up our order. The food was not bad but I could've gotten the same thing at Wendy's for a fraction of the price.

Overpriced, over-hyped, mediocrity at its best. I first had a burger from this place for which I thought they could get right, however I was wrong. Meet was of poor quality and was flavorless. I didn't revisit until about 7 months later and thought I would give them a second chance. I ordered a Chicken "Salad." It was far from a salad. The chicken was decent but it was placed on more of an iceberg GARNISH than an ample bed of lettuce constituting a salad. There was honestly only about a half a handful of cheap iceberg underneath the chicken. Never again will I revisit this place....even if they do adjust their prices to reflect the poor food quality.

Prices were high ($10.50 for a 1/2 lb burger with fries?) For a diner setting, but I was happy with the food. I hadn't eaten since afternoon the day before, and the 2 slider/half-fry special ($3.99) with medium chocolate malt ($4) more than filled up my starving appetite. Total was $8+tax/tip. Service was very friendly and fast. You could tell there are a lot of regulars here. I didn't think the sliders were dry, as someone mentioned. And I thought the chocolate malt milkshake was delicious. Yeah, it was sweet, but...you're eating ice cream, chocolate, and malt! The fries were standard diner fare...I'd put them on par with Red Robin's. Crispy outside, fleshy inside...to me, that's a good steak fry. I'm kinda interested in seeing how their onion rings are, and will go back again. If you're on the fence, I'd at least encourage you to come in and try something on their specials menu -- $4 for the sliders and fries is a risk-free way to test whether you like this type of food or not. I was pleasantly surprised.

Every thing you would expect from an old school diner but a little bit more. Steak fries are a plus. The service was "Mel's Diner" spot on and the burger was... Well, a good old burger. American at its old fashioned best. If your in the hood and need a quick burger fix, this place is what you need. The Elvis pinball machine makes any wait easy to take and is also perfect for a last minute game on the way out. Who can pass up Elvis pinball!?!

One of my fave burgers in the metro area. Very diner atmosphere but the burgers are divine. I think some people dine out for burgers expecting the Ritz. I am not in that category. Frankly I don't care much about ambiance when I am eating a burger and fries. Usually the best burgers are found in places that aren't where you would take anyone you need to impress anywho. Don's is fine but don't get the fish. Get the specialty of the house, really good burgers. I get a Big D half pounder with cheddar cheese and all the free toppings, mustard, ketchup, pickle and onion. I also get a side of mayo because while I like it, people can go overboard. The lettuce and tomato suck, skip em. The fries rock. The coleslaw is a pass, too warm usually and really who needs it. I do not drink a shake with my burger personally but I have it on good authority they are quite tasty. Order the specialty of the house and you will see what I am saying, deviate from burger and fries at your own risk.

Best milkshakes ever!! My family of three looked like the 3 bears sitting in the booth with our shakes. My 5 year old got a small raspberry, just the right size for her. I got a medium cherry, again just right and my husband got a large vanilla which was as big as his head and he couldn't finish it. (He took the rest to go) all the shakes are made with real fruit and are soooo freaking amazing!! We all got hamburgers and fries and they were great! I usually stick with burgers when we come. I'm not that adventurous, plus, why mess with a good thing when you've found what you like. My daughters meal came in the coolest little car box! I will agree though that the coleslaw is not all that. It's hard to find a place with a good slaw on the side these days... Everyone is very friendly, they really make you feel at home. I really just love this place!

Uninspired salad, iceberg lettuce with a packet of low-cal Italian dressing. And the split pea soup was eerily gelatinous. But, to be fair, what do I think I'm doing ordering soup and salad at a burger joint anyway? The 50's style interior had personality, the waitstaff did not. Burger was decent, sufficiently greasy and messy, but overall unmemorable. Happy to have a curly fries option for only a quarter more, but in the end you're really just paying $15 per person for a snore-fest and a stomachache, you know?

I've never eaten at Don's -in- Traverse City, but we finally got around to checking the Novi store out. We opted for burgers and shakes as that appeared to be the house specialties, and that turned out to be a good decision. I had the 1/4-pounder with cheddar, mayo, and (be still my heart!) OLIVES! I love olive burgers and don't see them very many places, so I was happy when I was able to build a burger pretty much as I would have it at home. Tim had a 1/2-pounder with mushrooms and grilled onions. We both liked the fact that the burgers themselves were fresh-ground, hand-formed and made-to-order. Tim's onions and mushrooms were fresh, which earned points from him. His big burger was a classic "slop burger" that required a fork to eat it-which he also thought was a good thing! You do pay a little extra for most of the add-ons (from about 10 to 75 cents for each topping beyond ), but the prices are still pretty much in the ball park for a sit-down burger place. We both enjoyed our shakes (vanilla for me, chocolate for him)...thick enough for our spoons to stand up in them and made with a real milkshake machine. Fun 1950s diner atmosphere, and great service.

Want a cool little diner with delicious milkshakes and good ol' food? Don's is one place I always try and eat at when I come back to Michigan. My friends and I LOVE their fries, milkshakes, chicken strips, burgers and decor! Oh man the place is so cute and great prices for a meal out. The place is decked out with 1950's decor and huge booths for groups to sit at. I have not had a problem with their staff or their service. I have been there numerous times in high school, college and visits back to Michigan and they have always been efficient. It is a small restaurant so space is limited but thats whats also nice about the place. Mmmmmmm I'm hungry for some Don's :)

Skip this place! I went there with some friends for a late lunch and it was not a good experience. The waitress had no personality and was rude when having to answer questions about the menu (there were 2 newbies in the group) and forgot to bring items out. Once she brought our food she went back to talking to the grill cook about how much high school drama bs her life is and how no guys are good enough to be with her. .. we were on the other side or the doorway and could still hear the whinny conversation all to well...the best part though was her turning the broom bottom side up and cleaning it out over the counter where food is prepared = flat out disgusting! I used to serve and because of that I normally tip very well but the server here was so awful I couldn't. All she cared about was herself. If you serve and you can't do the job competently and have common sense and manners, you are in the wrong line of work. Food notes - strawberry malt w/ real fruit - she put 1 strawberry in it lol and that was it. The burgers were a bit charred and we had to get up and find her both times we needed something (water refills and mustard). I am sure there is a better diner in the area, where you can have a pleasant waitress and get a good burger, fries and malt.

Gave this a whirl on a lonely Tuesday night on the strength of it's mention in the Free Press's Best Burgers piece. I guess I'm giving it three stars because most everything was just okay. The hand formed burger is a plus and it was definitely cooked to order, but the burger offered little flavor. I few spices might make the experience more memorable. Still worthwhile though if only for the price which is extremely reasonable especially with the single order of steak fries I got being almost a meal in itself. I think maybe I'd go back to just pound fries loaded with salt and vinegar. Yum! Oh and the atmosphere suffers when there are no oldies playing. Time to trade in the news for Dion and the Belmonts.

Free Press listed this place on it's 40 best burgers...I was taking the long way back to work after a LONG lunch and I drove right by good old Don's. I am PISSED it's so close to work, because it will be hard to say no to this food in the middle of the day.... Ok, total 50s diner look and sure, yes the cooks and small kitchen make it sketchy upon arrival but you will not care once you get this food in your mouth! Burgers are phenomenal...not a TON of flavor to the beef, but it's super high quality and not disgustingly over greasy...the patties are hand made and have that perfect little crisp to the outside of the meat. The burgers are cooked to order and come with a variety of topping choices...cheese is an extra 50 cents and so on...but a 1/4 burger basket is 6.25 and comes with a ton of crisp, hot steak fries and a fantastic side of colesalw....you will leave full and satisfied. Everything else I saw coming out of the kitchen looked good too...they do a lot of homemade specials and soups as well. Althou I don't know if I would order anything else but a burger...stay tuned for future updates! I have heard great things about the milkshakes, but was too full to splurge on one...again, bummed this is so close to work because a midday milkshake will be hard to resist. Everyone I dined with also REALLY liked their food too. I mean it's a diner, a mom and pop diner...and usually the best stuff is there. The Freep was 100% right with this being a can't miss burger.

Loved the atmosphere, loved the waitstaff did not however love the chocolate malt.......WAY WAY TOO SWEET. There were 5 of us all ordered burger and malt 4 Chocolate 1Strawberry... concensus Strawberry was not as sweet .......but tastier....... all ordered a 1/4 lb burger , all liked them, I would say I've experienced better... Oh yeah one thing happened while we were there.. a WEDDING PARTY came inside and posed for photos.........cheapskates didn't even order anything as far as I could tell.....

A great big greasy burger cooked to order in a restaurant designed to look like an authentic stainless steel diner- inside pasted with nostalgic photos of stars who were popular back when what this place is supposed to look like really make it seemed like someone wwatched Happy Days. On the down side, the prices are definitely not nostalgic, you might as well drive to Traverse City because Milford is probably halfway there and the Elvis pinball machine is almost as dead as the King. The kids meal comes in a paper '50s finned automobile, so if your child was born after 1974, you'll probably have some 'splaining to do. Good, but not as good as Michigan's best West Coast vacation spot burger- Redamaks in New Buffalo.

Don's is an old fashioned chrome diner with 50s-60s pictures on the wall and turquoise naugahyde seat covers. The folks who work there are friendly and work hard. It's not flashy but is a page out of say, 1962. Burgers are the best, juicy and made with quality meat. Extras cost a little more but that is fair because the prices are low anyway. A frequent monthly special of two sliders and a half order of perfect fries costs $3.50. Now, these are not tiny burgers, they are generous and tasty. If you need more fries than a half order, you soon won't fit in the narrow booths. Don's has wonderful fresh lunch choices and we go there often. He recently started offering breakfasts but the one time we went we though he hadn't quite mastered that yet... precooked bacon etc. Lunches, though are perfect.
