It's a bar built into an old garage, though they don't really play it up at all. I didn't even notice the garage door until I was on the way out. I'm not sure if that says more about the place or about me, but there you have it. Food was pretty good, it seems to be a nice little local joint for folks to hang out and shoot the breeze. I'd go back, without protest.

Amazing BBQ! The Pit-Master was baptized at the famous "Salt Lick," in Austin, TX. Having lived in Austin awhile back, and having been lucky enough to eat at one of the "Salt Lick" locations, my husband and I can both report that the BBQ Beef Brisket is pretty darn close and worth the trip! It is hands down the BEST BBQ we have had anywhere in Michigan! They also have amazingly good Pulled Pork and BBQ Ribs. The Tandoori Chicken salad is also quite excellent if you can pass up the BBQ options!!! However, while the Brisket is on the permanent menu, it isn't always available for dinner, so call ahead if that is what you have a real hankering for. There is nothing worse than driving an hour or more for something you are craving and can't get anywhere else and then finding out you can't have it. The place is northern Michigan country hip, if there is such a style. Though on the small side, they have an additional outdoor seating area, which is revealed in the warm season when they raise the actual "garage" door up, very cool. A small bar takes up about a third of the interior space, but Northport is a very small town, so probably perfect for all the locals year round. A bit on the noisy side, so if you want a quiet meal, save this place for another time.

Really great food and a good selection of craft beers. Prices are reasonable. Atmosphere is hip casual. Definitely a Northport favorite.

Amazing, just amazing. Simple decor and killer food, friendly staff that you could have a beer with. Pretty much exactly the type of place you would go to have a pint but at the same time the food will not disappoint either. Lets talk about the best soup I've ever had (morel mushrooms included) lets follow that up with the best black bean burger I've ever had (home made recipe by the chef whose from Boston btw - found this out after chatting with him for about 10 min before the next customer came in). I would seriously drive here for the black bean burger (mail order?), it's a little out of the way if you are headed to traverse city or somewhere else up north but WORTH IT, especially if you will be driving nearby. A food highlight for my trip up north

Had high hopes for this place, but was sorely disappointed. The salad was completely soaked in dressing. When we told the waitress, she brought out extra lettuce to mix into the salad and later charged us for it. We had to ask for the charge to be removed since the kitchen was the one that messed up the salad. We ate here in mid-October and the place was crawling with fruit flies-they swarmed over our food as we ate, really unappetizing. Would not recommend.

It was a hot day yesterday and Lake MIchigan was slick calm so we decided to run our boat down to Northport from Harbor Springs. It is about 40 miles each way but it was a really nice ride. We made our way to the Garage Bar and Grill for some lunch while in town based on many good reviews here and elsewhere. The ribs here are competition ready. Perfectly done, nicely seasoned and sauced. Excellent. The sweet potato chips are very good as is the aoli that comes with them. The beer was cold and fresh. The service was tourist town summer lunch. We got our food along with a few laughs. The chef came out and chatted us up. We talked smokers and chips.. Nice guy and knew his stuff. All in all, an excellent lunch. We will be back.

Losing it Black bean burger cool, bun untoasted. Pulled pork almost cold. Wine selection used to be good, but now down to a few Michigan wines. No Kendall Jackson even. Hope they get it back together again. Was great for a few years.

I love this place! An earlier review here calls it a "new addition to Northport". That's not entirely accurate. The owner simply took the existing (and EXCELLENT) "Drive Thru Barbecue", added on to the building to provide indoor seating, and changed the name. I think that will prove to be a good move as it should certainly expand their season. Sitting at an outdoor table in Northport in January wouldn't work, so the Drive Thru BBQ was really limited to the summer; now The Garage can be open year-round.... and it should be! The food is superb as always. The sweet potato chips and the accompanying sauce were a huge hit at our table, greedily gobbled down long before the main courses arrived. My burger exceeded my expectations, with a delightfully fresh, char-gilled taste and a mix of cheeses on top. The onion rings were crisp, not at all greasy, and quite tasty. My wife pronounced her Pulled Pork sandwich very good. This is a casual, unpretentious, fun place with excellent food. No, you won't see something like "a balsamic / red wine reduction infused with rare Swiss truffle oil" on the menu. But if a plate of delicious barbecued ribs is up your alley, you'll love The Garage.

I love Northport. I love BBQ. I love pork. I love a good bloody Mary. The Garage is all of that and more. We had the maple glazed smoked pork chop with garlic green beans and roasted sweet potatoes, as well as the bbq pork sandwich with cole slaw. Every bite was fantastic! You could tell that they take their smoking process seriously and give it the time it needs to be done right. The bloody Mary was also really well spiced and had a nice little kick. They didn't have a huge tap selection, but I was pretty impressed that all of the taps were smaller breweries. No PBR! As a now-Minnesotan, I was especially happy to see Summit as one of the featured handles. The bottled selection was deeper, but I didn't veer from my bloody Mary. It must be noted that we had an especially picky eater with us. When asked how her meal was, she said: "Perfect!" Indeed.

This little joint really is in what appears to be a spruced-up old garage; there's also some comfortable patio seating outside. We enjoyed some great pulled pork sandwiches here (I believe the pork is smoked in-house) during a recent lunchtime stop.

Great! Best pulled pork outside of North Carolina. Everything else was very good too. Service was friendly and efficient. Enjoyable!

Greatest new addition to northport. Awesome bbq and now booze! I liked the pulled pork and fries, and I will update once I try the ribs.

This is an amazing place! We wandered into Northport after rustic camping looking for a good meal. We found a great meal! The serve was amazing, the ambiance was urban-cool, and the chef was incredible! I'm already "jonesing" for our return trip next spring. This will be our new hangout!!

The service is great, every time I've come here they have been super nice and super helpful. I have ha the pulled pork sandwich and I will say that it is the best I've had. Ever. The sauce tastes great and the pork is amazingly tender and has a great flavor. My dad had the ribs last time we went and he got the ribs. He asked for the sauce on the side and there was no problem in doing that. He said that they were VERY good. I plan to go back again and try the sweet potato crisps.

Surprisingly good BBQ. One complaint is that there is not a BBQ rib dinner. I would love to be able to order a rack of ribs as they were very tasty with a couple sides. Only option is a half rack with no sides for I think 13.99. Nice indoor/outdoor atmosphere and ice cold beer. Everything else we seen come out looked tasty as well. Our waitress was a bit off.

Great job, great service and food. Recommend the BBQ sandwich sans bun. Onion rings are so so. Nice relaxed casual atmosphere. We'll be back.

We stopped in for dinner and a few pints. The pulled pork and 420 burger with gorgonzola made our night, we caught them right at kitchen close and they were willing to accommodate us. Very happy with our service. The draft selection was good and featured beers from around the area. The garage atmosphere is fun although the open door means dinner with the mosquitos and gnats, we didn't mind but some might.

Amazing, amazing black bean burger!!! I will now be getting it every time I'm in Northport. It's not so much of a burger as it is a sandwich though, which made it even better I thought. It's on delicious bread instead of a bun and the beans are not in a perfect party which made it better as well. Delicious is all I can say!!

Vey good food in this quaint town of Northport, MI in Northern Michigan's scenic Leelanau County. This is a small foodie spot with a theme of an garage repair shop of yesteryear right down to the mechanics clamp lamps used for lighting. Menu has a simple variety of fish, bbq, burgers and sandwiches with influences both local and beyond. We started with the whitefish spread and crackers, taking advantage of the locally caught whitefish, this appetizer was very tasty, generous and a nice change of pace. For lunch my wife went with the BBQ pork sandwich which really needed two buns to hold all of the pork (not complaining); they did well to not over sauce it and the flavor was solid on smokiness but maybe a tad light on whatever rub they used on it. I chose the whitefish sandwich which was absolutely amazing! A light battering and fried just right so that it was on the verge of crisp and the fish just to the point of being cooked through. When I say fried just right, thats when the batter gains some flavor from the oil versus soaking in a bunch of oil which so many do and makes for a soggy mess; not here, they got it right! Simple seating area for a couple dozen, and some outdoor seating as well. A small bar area for gathering or watching sports. Good service.

Great spot in northport. We ate here twice while up north. Both times we were seated quickly even though there were large crowds waiting for tables. Food was very good. Beer was also excellent. Service was great.

Don't bother unless you're family. The self-proclaimed owner's sister was in tonight, and threw elbows until she got a spot at the bar. I guess the 6 other people there were invading her space. As an "owner", she was sure to run out the paying customers. Didn't try the food, as we were forced out before we could order. Disappointing beer list, considering the great micro brews in northern MI right now.

On our way to Lighthouse point we stopped in Northport to eat. This place sits as cute as can be in this quiet little town. Bartender welcomed us immediately and got our drinks. I ordered the gumbo and hubby had the chili. Both of us had corn bread. Both meals were amazing!!! The gumbo is the best I've ever had. The chef, George, came out to say hi to everyone. Great guy! Told us he learned how to cook in Louisiana. That would explain a lot!! Very talented man with the love for cooking. Great experience. Thanks George and to the bartender!!

Crap, service garbage, food..ehhh. Don't waste your time. How this place gets 4 stars is beyond me..witnessed some woman claiming to br the owners sister get nasty with a few couples at the bar..

Great service, good food, great drinks, cool little patio area outside. The owners brother heads things and he is amazing. Best service, he kept the severs on thier toes! Nachos were good with pulled pork. I'll be back

Must agree that the sweet potato chips are excellent. The aoli was sweet and spicy and pleasantly not like mayo at all...all 7 in our party were enamoured. Those that ordered the pulled pork said it was great. I had ribs (only $10 as the fathers day special...usually $18) and they were good...didn't love the sauce but the texture of the ribs was tender but not falling off the bone. They are generous with the cheese on the nachos. Good beer choices. Service was solid.

Feeling vegetarian? I found Bruce's Black Bean Burger to be truly amazing...flavorful. Handmade (not some frozen burg.) It was ample and filling. I ordered cole-slaw on the side, and the portion was overflowing its bowl. Great taste, light and well seasoned dressing. The atmosphere is hip and clean...a great modern addition to the cuteness of the Village of Northport. The open-air garage doors let the summer breezes through. Winter-time is cozy and with a game on the TV, a great local experience!

For being in such a small middle-of-nowhere town, this place sure had an extensive menu! We were visiting for a few days in Northport with the wife and two kids, walking through town with empty stomachs. We first noticed the larger sports bar looking place, but checked Yelp and the reviews were less than awesome, so we decided to check out the Garage. Cool concept of a place with the roll-up doors and combo of inside/outside seating. Beer selection was pretty good for a small town, and menu was awesome. There were so many choices of spectacular sounding items I had a difficult time choosing. I settled on the whitefish and my wife had the black bean burger. All four of us were completely full and satisfied by the time we were finished. The next day we sauntered into town and the kids were begging to go back, but I wanted to at least give the other places in town a try. I'm glad I did, but I will certainly make a return visit the next time we are back in town.

I absolutely love this place. Draught beer & BBQ.. i mean... c'mon, perfect. They also make great bloody marys. A group of us went to grab lunch. Half of us had been several times and the other half of us were new to the place. I was new to the place. We shared 2 appetizers.. sweet potato chips and the pulled pork nachos. The sweet potato chips were incredible and came with an amazing dipping sauce. The pulled pork nachos were enormous and loaded with toppings.. great appetizer for sharing. Black bean burger available as a vegetarian option which is refreshing for a BBQ place. I had the chicken salad and it was amazing. Our server was nice enough to bring me a sample beforehand.. It was some of the best chicken salad i've ever had. Others had the black bean burger, regular burger, and some crazy burger thats topped with pulled pork.. everyone loved everything. I can't wait to come back here.

I was in Northport for a wedding over the 4th. Went to the garage on the first day and it was horrible. I had a burger; it sucked and you get coleslaw with every sandwich except the burger. Kind of weird but after my friend gave me his coleslaw I wasn't that worried. It had zero flavor. The girls we were with both got white fish and neither one of them finished it because it was bland, I tried it and agreed. My coleslaw donating friend ordered a smoked sausage plate and it was average at best. The onion rings were stellar. We drank here a couple of nights as it is a cool atmosphere, however they ran out of Jack Daniels and Short's beer. I gave this place a two star because we had fun drinking. Without having a large group of friends I'd never go back. Huge disappointment, Mario Batali must have been paid to say this place is good. If I were you I'd head a couple blocks from here to the North End Eatery and enjoy some GREAT food!

Food was good but staff is extremely rude. The management is incompetent and do not have a clue about what customer service is. I would never go back to this restaurant or recommend it to anyone else. I have never met such rude people in my life or even thought they existed.

Although everyone is entitled to their own opinion if you don't LOVE this place something is wrong with you ;) lol Our server, Daniel, was awesome! Very knowledgable did an excellent job recommending some add ons (bacon and cucumber) for my outstanding Black Bean Burger, yum! My first but I can tell you it won't be my last! The coleslaw is fantastic, I could eat it all day, different from any other coleslaw I've had before, super creamy and some celery seed. Also ordered the sweet potatoes chips, I will be craving these!perfect in flavor, crispness, mmmmmm And then there are the pulled pork nachos, oh my goodness!! I'm adding a picture and that can speak for itself, the only thing my husband had to say was he wished the pork had BBQ on it, which he added :) We will be returning north just to eat here!

Ordered a BLT. The bread was PARTIALLY toasted on one side only. The bacon wasn't fully cooked. The waitress had a nice smile, but service also sucked.
