    Pretty good stuff. Not sure who says they are the #1 since they don't attribute it. The pasty here is good. My wife had the beef and I had the chicken. Her beef was by far way better than the chicken, which was rather bland and blended in with the vegetables too well. Fortunately some Frank's solved that problem for me. The crust was perfectly flakey. The prices are a little on the high side, at around $5.50, but the place we were staying at ran out so I guess I can't complain too much about it. They have a really nice outdoor area you can sit on, either on the porch of the 'house' or on some shaded picnic tables near the parking lot.

    That was my first pastie, but if this is a prime example of the breed, I'm out. I remain thankful that I asked the proprietor if he recommended the gravy, as without it they pastie may have been inedible. Mind you, this was my first meal of the day after sleeping on the ground in a rainstorm in 45 degree temps. You'd think any food would taste great... simply wasn't the case.

    Pasties were good- crust was flaky, filing was good - a lot of potato, if you like that. We tried chicken, beef and veggie. Veggie was my favorite as the flavor was unique

    I have to say the crust and dough is absolutely delicious, however, it's basically potato wrapped with a little bit of ground meat. I wish it would have more flavor, with cubes of beef or chicken rather than ground chicken or beef, and a good ratio of potatoes rather than what tastes like a dough-wrapped potato. The owner is extremely nice. Service is great, which is why I gave it the 3 stars. Also, if you get the fruit filled "pies," they are delicious as there's no problem with flavor intensity there. I tried the apple one, which is basically pastie dough with apple pie filling. Very good.

    I've been eating pasties for years. I make them occasionally. Learned from my mom who learned from my dad'S mom. my grandpa was a copper miner as a young boy, do needless to say. We know pasties. The pasties here had good flavor and a light flaky crust. I would have liked a bit more size, perhaps another 2-3 ounces. Filling was mostly potatoes as per usual when you find commercial pasties. The meat was ground which is not my favorite as I prefer cut meat but I understand it's cheaper. Overall, not bad, but by no means, "the best.". I would eat here again.

    These pasties are amazingly good! Soft, tender, buttery, flaky crust- overfilled with meats and savory potatoes and such. We travel Up North every summer- and this is definitely going to become a tradition!

    I spent four years in the UP, and have since moved, finding that I really miss a good pastie occasionally. On travelling through the area, we spotted Muldoon's and I figured, if it's the middle of the UP, it's the right place to get a pastie. I was right. These were just as good as I remembered, from the right fillings to a nice crust. Definitely hit the spot as good road food, especially after camping the night before. I really want to figure out how to ship them to the East Coast.

    I discovered pasties while in the UP (Ironwood) a few years ago, so naturally HAD to stop for one. I got the veggie: potato, carrot, broccoli (?) with a flaky crust (yum!) and probably as guilt-free as you can get! :) For $5.50, it was huuuuge and really satisfied my hungry belly!

    Excellent pasties. As a born and bred "yooper" I can say with some authority that these guys know what they're doing. They do one thing and they do it well: pasties. Beef, of course, also chicken (which is also really good) and veggie, which I suppose is probably good, though I can't bring myself to try one. Also fruit desert pasties. There are a frequent outdoor seats and a souvenir shop inside but mostly it's a take out place. Hot, cold or frozen. Gravy is also very good.

    Found Muldoons when driving through town . Great beef and chicken pasties. This would have been a 5 star review, but Apple pie pasty was not as good as the rest. Would definitely stop again. No indoor seating , but a few tables available on the porch. Most people just seemed to carry theirs out. Fast and friendly service .

    Nice place. Friendly staff with little gift shop. No idea why people go crazy for the Pasties. Being from the East coast we don't have these so we had to try. Didn't care for them. Chicken version had no chicken.

    I don't know pasties too well, being from out West. But I do know food, and these things were tasty! They were some tasty pasties! Dianne, the woman who helped us, was really sweet as well. Don't know if she was the owner, but she seemed like she was. At least she took the kind of pride in the place that an owner takes, which makes her a great employee at the very least. There were beef and veggie pasties (they were out of chicken that day). The gravy comes on the side if you want it. There were also apple and cherry dessert pasties. We tried them all. Our favorite was the veggie and cherry respectively. They don't have tables inside, but they do have a covered picnic table outside. It was awesome sitting there, with the rain coming down all around us, while we were completely dry, eating delicious food.

    This is our only experience with pasties so nothing to compare to but we were very satisfied. It's a lot like a cross between pot pie and a calzone. We ordered gravy but that probably wasn't necessary. Both the beef and chicken pasties were good.

    Wonderful spot in the U.P. Their pasties are delicious! This was my first taste of pasties and I was very pleased. Dough, potatoes, and beef were delicious!! They also have really good fudge. If you buy two you get the third one free so I went with Mint Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter, and Chocolate Fudge and each were delightful

    I don't know if all pasties are supposed to be like this. I'd never had a pastie until Muldoon's. We ordered two beef, one chicken, and one pumpkin pastie. They were quite awful. There was barely any beef in the pasties. 90% of the filling was potato and flour. It was completely bland too; there was no salt, no herbs or no spices. Either way, none of us liked them and we ended up throwing away one whole beef pastie and most of the pumpkin one. The pumpkin pastie's filling was like a very badly made pumpkin pie. It wasn't sweet enough and tasted heavily of flour. My advice, skip Muldoon's!

    Very best pasties-- not just in UP but the world.... What more can I say? Grab some frozen and hit the road. Cherry pie pasty with some of your own ice cream or whipped topping--yum!

    As a tourist, I was looking for a true "yooper" dining experience, and that meant finding the best pasty (pronounced pass-tee) on the upper peninsula. Look no further than Muldoon's! You can literally eat their pasties like hamburgers or with a knife and fork. My favorite was the beef pasty, which had a delightful buttery pastry crust filled with shredded beef, potatoes, and chopped vegetables... all steaming hot. I also sampled the blueberry and cherry dessert pasties, which were delicious. My wife and son each had chicken pasties, and I thought weren't quite as good as the others, as the insides weren't as warm. I would certainly advise that if you are staying in or passing through Munising, you need to stop at Muldoon's. The pasties are a regional culinary specialty well worth tasting, and Muldoon's serves the best that I've had at very affordable prices!

    I don't have a lot of experience with "pasties" but I thought it needed a lot more meat. They are pricy for being mostly potatoes, and gravy (a must) is an extra charge, making this a pretty expensive meal. The pasty is a locally traditional food in the U.P. so I recommend trying one, but you might have a better taste experience from a different vendor (even though they are "voted #1"). On the other hand, Muldoon's supplies the area with a wide variety of tasty fudge. The s'mores fudge is smack-your-grandma good, so be sure to pick up a box or two.

    Be prepared to dine outside on a picnic table, or take your food to go. The weather was great when I visited, so eating outside was fine with me. I ordered a beef pastie, with gravy, and a side of coleslaw. This was delicious. The crust is what made it better than the other pasties I have eaten. It was flaky like a pie crust. If you are not familiar with Pasties, they taste similar to a beef/chicken/vegetable pot pie, but can be held in your hand. I would have rated this a 5 if the chunks of beef were larger. I definitely recommend.

    Pasty (PASS-tee), noun: a delicious blend of meat (if you wish), carrots, rutabaga, and potatoes, all wrapped within the confines of a buttery pot pie crust. And it's self contained, so you can hold it in your hands and eat it hamburger style! Muldoon's is the best pasty shop in Munising. It's been fun to see it expand over the years - parking is still scant, but they've added lots more outdoor seating on their wrap-around porch and under picnic shelters to cater to visitors and motorcycle groups riding through. Inside this quaint yellow house you'll be greeted with a plethora of Yooper and Michigan trinkets as well as a Sasquatch theme. (A lady in the U.P. claimed she saw Sasquatch a few years ago. Discovery Channel's "Finding Bigfoot" got called in and filmed an episode in Munising. The rest is history. Sasquatch sighting unconfirmed). Choose between beef, chicken, or veggie for $6.75. Add gravy or a drink to your meal for a lunch combo! *For you dessert lovers, they also make a pretty mean mini apple pie pasty. Oh, and don't forget their new assortment of Grand Island Fudge! The dark chocolate was decadent. Only bummer is they can't ship :/

    I'm going to write this review while including one disclaimer... my visit to Muldoon's came after hiking twenty-plus miles on Grand Island in two days. The kind of walk, it turns out, for which I was physically ill-prepared when considering the seventy-pound pack that I decided to carry. So, after that self-imposed trial by fire; fueled only by trail mix, beef jerky, granola bars and oatmeal... needless to say, I was STARVING. Something to consider, I suppose, when viewing these five stars. But, I digress... my lady and I stopped at Muldoon's as our first order of business upon stepping off the Grand Island ferry. Now, I'm not really a connoisseur, but this was one of the best pasties I had ever tasted. Great flaky crust, good proportions and moist, savory fillings (I had the beef with gravy and Katy, the veggie). A lot of love went into these delightful pouches of yumminess and the folks running this little family operation were mighty friendly as well. I cannot think of a better way to celebrate the completion of our Grand Island trek... other than, perhaps, the three, ice cold bottles of Labatt Blue that I proceeded to annihilate within about twenty minutes at our next stop. Thanks Muldoon's!

    Cute touristy stop with a friendly staff. You can watch as they make pasties in the open kitchen while browsing the funny typical U.P. souvenirs (Big Foot stuff, mosquito T-shirts, etc.). I liked that they offered a vegetarian pasty, among the regular chicken and beef options. We also tried the cherry pie pasty (which came in a pasty shell) and the store-made fudge (which was too soft). There's a little picnic area to sit and eat, and I believe there was seating on their porch; however, there was no place to eat inside.

    We ordered the traditional, chicken, and veggie pasties. They were just okay; not as good as Pure Pasty in Vienna, VA which is owned by Brits. They would be better if the meat ones had more meat, and they all had bigger chunks of carrots and potatoes. The veggie one had such scrawny pieces of veggies on it. The pastry wasn't as buttery as other pasties I've had, and an egg wash would have made them more appealing.

    Best pasties I've ever had. You can watch the ladies in there making them from scratch. They have a nice patio outside with a few picnic tables to enjoy the deliciousness. There's a small park and playground across the street for the kiddos after lunch.

    4 stars for nostalgia, filling-ness and the use of rutabaga! I have been here twice now and I find myself agreeing with Libby F. There's a lot that could knock this pasty out of the park (chunks of beef, egg wash, etc.), but it's comforting to have one on Pictured Rocks trip and on the road. The first time I was here, my friend was happy to find that they had a vegetarian version. This time, the SO and I ordered one beef and one chicken pasty. They were tender and mild. Couldn't hurt to to have some Worcestershire with you. I don't recommend the chicken gravy, unless you really feel the need to smother it with something. It's quite bland and a little too consistent in color. We sat outside on their little porch that faces the road. When we finished, we decided to go back in for the apple pasty - DELICIOUS!! Get it. It will make you happy. I could come back just for those...firm apples in a cinnamon syrup (commercial flavor, but who cares) and granulate sugar on the tender crust. Also, I am a fan of a good gift shop and here you can get your own pasty magnet or a bit of copper as a souvenir. We also took home a few frozen pasties :)

    We dropped by here after taking the Pictured Rocks Cruise, and we were not disappointed. This is a great place to stop if you're hungry or looking for an introduction to pasties. It's simple, cheap, and quick. We ordered one each of the original, chicken, and veggie along with an Apple Pie dessert pastie. It was a nice night and we sat at one of the picnic tables outside. The pasties exceeded our expectations! The crust was excellent, and it was just the sort of hearty meal we were looking for. I might have preferred some more side options, but the simplicity is what allows this to be such a quick meal.

    I've been to Muldoon's twice now and I have to say, it's my second favorite pasty out of the ones I have tried. They are moist and delicious. They have many pasty options including beef, chicken, vegi, and dessert options as well. They run on the more expensive side though: $5.75 to date. The only reason it is not 5 stars is because I think it is a tad expensive for the size pasty you get, and it is my second favorite pasty. The Yelp 5 stars says "As good as it gets!", so since I like Jean Kay's a hair better, Muldoon's will have to settle with "Yay! I'm a fan." One of the really cool things I like about this place is that you can see them make the pasties right in front of your eyes. It is interesting and also tells the customer that there are no secrets. There's not a crazy amount of space inside to eat, but there are a few quaint tables and more tables outside if it's a nice day. There are also many UP gifts to purchase and a few clever shirts too. Bottom line is, if you're going to Munising, I would definitely stop at Muldoon's for lunch instead of Hardee's, Subway, or Main Street Pizza. It is a great meal you can take to go and eat by the bay.

    So not an original Michigander and never tried a pasty. This place is awesome! Patsy's are homemade. The beef one is what I tried and it is the right size/portion. The ladies that were there were friendly and hard working. If your in town you gotta try this place for the pasty!

    I'm in the Keweenaw area about once a year, and just recently made my first trip there via the lower peninsula instead of through Wisconsin. Naturally, when you see the "#1 pasty in the UP," you have to stop to try it. My opinion? Not the best, but still pretty darn good. I got the beef pasty. The crust was fantastic. A lot of people here have mentioned the gravy, but I didn't try it. It's all about ketchup for me. The filling was pretty good, but I had two main gripes. There was too much potato, and it seemed more ...slimy? creamy? than I'm used to. I mean, I love potato, but pasties are about getting the right ratio, and this was just too much. The price seemed appropriate for the size of the pasty. It would be nice if they offered a smaller size, though, especially because food coma-ing when you still need to drive a few more hours isn't exactly ideal. I probably should have been more concerned that I found two hairs in mine, but I wasn't about to not eat a pasty over something that can easily be picked out...

    Did my research (yelp haha) and this is where I choose to go for my first pasty. Success! The beef pasty was savory, with those wonderful pieces of potato. The gravy was good, but I'm not a gravy person, so I didn't think it was necessary. AND THE CRUST! ahhh so good. buttery and crispy and perfect. The chicken was also good, a little more herby than the beef, but otherwise basically the same taste. Delicious! Good price, good food, and now I'll be craving it down in the lower peninsula :(

    Overall and generally I love Muldoon's pasties. I still think they're worth getting when I'm in the area. That having been said, I recently got a pasty there, only to get back to our hotel and find it badly burned on the bottom and almost blackened on the inside. I went back to exchange it and they had to look through several to find one sans scorching. They mentioned something about a teenage employee that did the baking. They promised to let the owner know and cheerfully refunded my money. On another day I purchased two more pasties. Though not nearly as blackened as the previous pasty, they also had scorched-looking and tasting spots. My son was too hungry to wait to go back, so we just threw away the burned pieces. I've never had a bad pasty from here before and am hoping that there's better oversite of the help in the future. You can say, "Well, stuff happens." Perhaps, but there are other excellent pasty makers whose products I've found to be 100% consistent over many years. I'll still be ordering pasties from them in the future, but I'll be checking my food before I leave.

    I was born and raised in houghton michigan, a true yooper. I've had my fair share of amazing pasties, but NOTHING comes close to muldoons. They have the perfect proportion of beef and veggies along with a sweet savory crust. I HIGHLY recommend trying a pasty from here especially If this is your first.

    When in Rome... So when in the da U.P....do as the yoopers do. And that means get, eat and enjoy a pasty. Muldoon's Pasties, located on the edge of downtown Munising, claims it has the best pasty in the U.P. I can't attest to that claim, seeing that I only tried pasties from two places up there -- but I will say that Muldoon's pasties are damn good! Husband and I visited Muldoon's our last day up there. If they were going to make such a gargantuan claim, well we just had to test it out. A few observations: The storefront is tiny. I'm guessing you pick up your pasties and go. They have a small gift shop right off the area where you order your food. I'm sure this helps them maximize on the tourist dollar. Here you can pick up a carload of knick-knacks, postcards, t-shirts; all featuring a million and one wisecracks about the yooper lifestyle. The menu seemed limited. All I remember are the pasties. That will be all you need to pay attention to anyway. Order your pasties and sit outside if the weather permits. They had a few tables on their porch. Or take them to-go. We sat outside. The weather was nice, the sun was shining...what else can you ask for? The pasties are huge. And tasty. We both got the beef pasties, which are also stuffed with potatoes, carrots and such -- surrounded by a flaky, perfectly cooked crust which was prepared at the perfect thickness and baked to the perfect color. Your pasties will come with gravy; make sure to take advantage of it. At first I thought that my husband and I could share a side of gravy, but you definitely will be wanting your own after you taste the two together. Pasties aren't definitely my go-to food. Actually, I never really see them downstate unless I'm visiting the Scottish bakery. It's all good though...it gives me a once a year up-north treat to look forward to. I just hope I won't have to wait too long!

    First pasty experience and I gotta say I was pleasantly surprised by this savory filled pastry! This place looks mostly like a giftshop but there's a counter where you order pasties. The three pasty options were: chicken, beef, and vegetable. We ended up with beef and vegetable to take back to our cabin to enjoy with a pinot. Gotta say I liked the vegetable more than the beef! It was probably the small amount of cheese in the veggie that won points over the beef. Can't say if Muldoon's is the best because it was the only pasty place one we tried, but you don't want to the U.P. without one pasty experience.

    After seeing signs for pasties the whole way to Munising we stopped at Muldoon's because we heard they had the best. We ordered a beef pastie. The crust was good and the filling was delicious. I'm not sure how they are supposed to be but it was a lot of vegetables and a little meat. After a long day of kayaking it hit the spot. The gentleman working the counter was very friendly and the small gift shop inside was nice to peruse while waiting for out pastie.

    Yep, the hype about this place is for reals. I kind of feel like my trip through the U. P. was more like a quest for the perfect pasty and when I got to Muldoons, I instantly wanted to take back all the other pasties I ate previously! Perfect crust, perfectly savory filling. I wanted to just keep eating and eating and eating them....

    This is the place to eat pasties. I've been eating whitefish and pasties for the better part of a week now and I agree with everyone who voted this place as the best place for pasties in the UP. Try the chicken as I think it's better than the beef.

    A fun place to eat huge, great pasties. My archaeology cohort frequents this place, and one pasty here feeds even our hungriest of eaters. I've tried all three of their pasties: beef, chicken, and veggie. Beef is by far the best, although the veggie is quite good too surprisingly. I'm not a big fan of the chicken. Their pasties are made with rutabaga, which is what makes a true pasty in my mind. Five stars to Muldoon's!

    Here's what Wikipedia says about the history of the pasty: "Tradition claims that the pasty was originally made as lunch for tin miners in Cornwall, England, who were unable to return to the surface to eat. The story goes that, covered in dirt from head to foot (including some arsenic often found with tin), they could hold the pasty by the folded crust and eat the rest without touching it, discarding the dirty pastry. The pastry they threw away was supposed to appease the "knockers," capricious spirits in the mines who might otherwise lead miners into danger." When the tin mining industry hit hard times, many Cornish miners moved to Michigan's UP, which had a growing mining industry, and they brought pasties with them. Sadly, it seems like they only brought the crappy pasties. Now, go to a town like, say, Padstow, Cornwall.... mmmmm, those handmade pasties are soooo good. They also have fast food pasties out there (at the West Cornwall Pasty Co chain), as well as mass-produced pasties you can buy in a supermarket and take home to cook (Ginster's). You can watch the region's best soccer (er, football) team, the not-particularly-mighty but lovable Pilgrims of the Plymouth Argyle Football Club, who are sponsored by a pasty company (again, Ginster's). There pasties are alive and well. Muldoon's pasties are kind of like eating a postcard of those pasties.

    The best pastie that I have had. The crust was light and flaky, the filling was moist, but not so wet as to make the crust soggy. A very simple place with really great pasties.

    great pasties. not sure about their claim of "number one pastie in the U.P.", but whatever, they're really good. and they have veggie pasties! they put broccoli in instead of meat. (get the gravy... unless you're vegan i guess.)
