Piggy dog I believe. Bacon, pulled pork, ranch, orange pop bbq, fries and cheese. So Good. GF got bacon bleu dog. blue cheese, sauteed onions and bacon on a dog. Note: They're closed on Sundays.

Absolutly fantastic spot for custom dogs. A little out off.the main strip, but definitely a place to seek out. The piggy fries are worth the trip alone. Pulled pork, orange bbq sauce, onions and ranch...worth the trip alone. Had the Widowmaker and was blessed with a taste sensation. Deep fried dog with all of rhe trimmings, you can't go wrong with anything here. To quote SNL "I can smell your weiner from here" High praise indeed.

Don't walk away because you don't like the outside. Food is very good. Plenty of choices. Our kids liked the food very much.

I would say, feel and believe that a small operation is always the best. At this Munising favorite establishment we see that honest, well done, focused item food is always the best. A wide array of selection for different style hot dogs; from a traditional, all the way to a junk yard. I was delighted with their Junk Yard dog- the chili was slightly bland, a touch of salt is all, but the mix of savory chili and their awesome cole slaw was incredible. My wife had the bacon blu- blue cheese, caramelized onions and blu cheese- very very tasty. Super small establishment, limited seating, but it is worth the stop.

Okay I was not craving a hot dog but my wife said this place has got great reviews so WTF gotta keep her happy. I had the Country dog and piggy fries, and she had a coney dog. The food was done in a few minutes. It was hot and great. My dog was creative and it worked. A dog covered with bacon, pulled pork, orange soda BBQ sauce , ranch and fried onions #awesome. The fries were the same. It was creative and I was glad we stopped in. I think I need to swing by tomorrow for some of the orange BBQ sauce for my son.

It was a delight to find Johnny Dogs in Munising while visiting for the day from Grand Marais. The dogs were great and fish tacos excellent. Menu is extensive but simple - it's all about the dog! We appreciated the dog friendly picnic table too!

  • Jordan K.

Most gourmet dogs around $4-$5. Fries $1.50 unless you want to sign up for a heart transplant and get the Piggy Fries which are loaded with pulled pork, cheese and tasty nonsense. Fun atmosphere, very good prices, and an overwhelmingly large selection of dogs to choose from; concoctions that solidify the fun of your meal but playfully put into question the future of your health. Great place. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Dogs are amazing. Try one with the Orange BBQ sauce, it sounds strange but it is some of the best sweet BBQ sauce I have had.

That's right, 5 star hot dog place. Not much more to say. The staff is very friendly. You walk in and look at a chalkboard that looks like a bunch of mumbo jumbo, but as you read, it is a bunch of dogs jumbled. It is very good, and I don't think anything is nothing short of what it is. Eat here for lunch.

I am a local, but in no way affiliated with Johnnie Dogs. Let me just say that I work here in Munising and get my lunch here quite often. In fact, they have a punch card, buy ten and get one free deal, I have recieved three free dogs to this point! There are so many choises, I could not begin to list them here, but my favorite is the North Carolina dog. It comes with pulled pork, coleslaw and homemade orange barbecue sauce- Wow makes me want to get lunch now! If you are in Munising or the area it is worth your while to try Johnnie Dogs, I don't even consider myself a big hot dog fan but these are more than just a hot dog!

  • Robyn M.

Wanted to love it after reading reviews here, packed up the kids and had them all excited about hotdogs...only to find the establishment was randomly closed during what should have been regular business hours. Might be awesome, but better call first, and definitely don't tell any little hotdog lovers till you're sure you can find someone to open the doors.

Had the Bob Marley dog and was great. Cut fries were golden brown and delicious. .. Going back for dinner! Went back to get dinner:Closed , it was 7:00 PM Owner should publish hours as unpredictable ! Ugh.... Changed from 5 stars to 3 and it's to bad ,food was good but others are right Closed when should be open so it appears you wouldn't want to count on driving just to go eat there.

Strange little hole in the wall but it was good! Had a piggy dog, pulled pork and fries which were hot, fresh and perfectly salty. This would be a great spot in the summer, we sat in the basement of a nearby bar in the rain.

I think it's safe to call Johnny Dogs Musining's savior! My husband insisted we try them out and Boy! are we glad we did. After the Pictured Rock Cruise, we stopped off at Muldoon and bought some pasties, and then came to Johnny Dogs and bought some dogs for our lunch. They were pretty big, and filled lavishly with condiments. They did not scrim on anything. We ordered the Piggy Dog and the Bacon Blue Dog, both of which were great. The next time we're up at Munising, we're skipping Muldoon Pasties and going straight to Johnny Dogs.

Delicious!!! Food is excellent. Dirt driveway and only seating outside, but glad we came. Hot dogs are jumbo dogs that taste good. I had sirloin, peppers and cheese dog. 1/2 tempted to get another dog because it was sooo good. Will definitely stop by the next trip as long as they are open. Would've never found this place if it wasn't for YELP as it is a block off the main strip.

  • Dalinda A.

Food was great. I had the South Carolina Slaw Dog, very good. My boyfriend had the Homewrecker and the Chicago Dog and we shared onion rings. Great local place to eat. Very small, but worth the stop if your in the area.

  • Rachel K.

So glad we checked yelp as we rolled through Munising or we might not have found this gem! Great, fresh tasting food, fast. The piggy fries were delicious as we're the burgers and fish tacos. Can't speak to the hot dogs since my son is picky so ordered his plain - but he ate every bite. Mac and cheese bites were disappointing - batter was really thick making them too greasy/rich, but we'd definitely recommend this place and go again.

  • Jessie T.

If you don't stop here, you've missed out! Best hotdog joint that I've been to. The combinations are awesome! I thoroughly enjoyed the Sasquash and ate every bite. No regrets! Haha! My kids split and really loved the half barbque chicken that was straight off the grill. They make their own fries (delicious) and I saw a pig on the grill/cooker/thing confirming they make their pulled pork themselves too. Amazing!

While in Munising this week we checked out Johnny Dogs. We ended up heating here for two meals. We tried the Chicago style dog and the BLT dog. Both kind of "meh" and something we wouldn't try again. The fries are awesome. The next night we tried sandwiches. We had the whitefish Cajun poboy (was missing the fried tomatoes it was to come with so thanks for nothing in that category) and my husband had the Philly Steak sandwich it was good but had too much gristle on the meat. Also if you pay by card they pressure you into tipping. No mention of that made to cash paying customers. Also, what am I tipping for when you don't come check on anyone to see of they need anything else? It's definitely worth the try, just some things were off putting like the false advertising and heavily implying you should tip, but only to some customers.

Holy crap, the absolute best hot dogs I've had anywhere and I love hot dogs, wish you were downstate!! Love the options, and recommend the North Carolina, Bacon Blue and John's twist on the Chicago. The homemade mac n cheese is ridiculous, and very original! We stopped on our way to Copper Harbor, loved it so much stopped again five days later on our way home for carryout. Have since been back, June 2013, and just as great as before. Had the Blue Hawaiian and the Bacon Blue (always will), amazing...hope nothing ever changes. I do miss the mac n cheese though. :(

  • Bob A.

Best Hot Dog place in the US! Big, tasty, and served with a smile. The North Carolina dog with the pulled pork, slaw and Orange Pop BBQ sauce was marvelous. Don't miss this place when you get to the UP.

Holy $#@*! Johnny dogs isn't just the best lunch & dinner spot in Munising, it's one of the best anywhere. They do gourmet dogs, brats, hamburgers, pulled pork, and other meaty kinds of grilled and fried foods--although I saw vegetarian wraps on the menu too. Their french fry baskets are hand made and huge, and cost a whopping $2. I came here with a group of hungry archaeologists, and everything that we ordered was top notch and pretty much blew our minds. This place is also way, way under-priced--it's downright cheap. I had the special of the day, the "Torpedo Dog", which was like a huge pig-in-a-blanket for $4 or so. It was cooked to golden perfection, with garlic and herbs sprinkled on top. Inside it was soft and contained a really great sausage. It made me think that they should do pasties here, because whoever runs this place is making killer food. They could own the pasty. The next time I'm there, I'm going to take on the fried whitefish basket. I posted this in another review, but I'll repeat it here: My perfect day in Munising would be to start with an early breakfast at Sydney's--eating the Greek Skillet--and lunch at Johnny Dog's (the best dogs in the world), with frequent stops at Falling Rock for coffee, before or after spending a day on Grand Island or at Miner's Beach--which is also one of my favorite beaches in the world because of the incredible swim around/through the caves leading to the the panoramic cove beneath Miner's Castle. Miner's Beach is as good in my mind as Waikiki, HI; Florianopolis, SC, Brazil; and Grand Island's North Beach. Dinner would be at the Golden Heart--pad thai or vegetable delight. That's makes a cheap day with incredible food and a lot to do, so get going already! Update: I stopped in and tried the whitefish basket. As I predicted, it was outstanding--absolutely the best damn fried fish in the UP. It was cooked perfectly golden, had great flavor, and arrived piping hot. Perfection!

The best restaurant I ate at in Munising. Being from Chicago, a great hotdog spot is always a key find. Johnny Dogs happens to be a great and inventive hotdog spot. The dog variety is top notch. Ingredients are good quality. Nondog items like the fish tacos and turkey sandwich were good too. The food is perfect eating in the restaurant and travels well to the beach. Best part is the fried mac and cheese.

  • Leah F.

Absolutely have to try the fish tacos!!! AMAZING!! Found them based on yelp reviews and had to check it out! Do glad we did. Everyone was really nice and helpful. Can't wait to go back and try something else next time!

  • Fawn S.

This is the first review I've ever put on yelp and it's totally worth it. This place is delicious! The staff is uber friendly, prices are more than reasonable for the quality of food you get and the ambiance is adorable. I highly recommend this joint if your in the Munising area. We will definitely be back.

  • Desiree R.

OK first of all let me say that AMAZING does not even begin to describe how wonderful the food is here. GO HERE OR YOUR MISSING OUT! We ate here 3 times in two days (Warning: Be careful how much you eat so you don't go into a food coma) first I got a piggy dog and shared piggy fries with my boyfriend....the piggy fries are HEAVEN on earth and the piggy dog was too. Then I got the dead elvis dog ( I would have to say this was my favorite) and a side of fried mac n cheese which does have a kick to them but the sauce to dip them in was amazing! I also got the Sasquach dog which also was amazing and a side of jalapeño poppers. I must say I am glad I don't live close to this place because I would be broke and probably gigantic because I would eat here all the time! Seriously the food is heaven you must stop weather you get it to go or eat there you have got to stop. We might be planning a trip back just to come here! Amazing amazing amazing!

There is one major problem I found with Johnny Dogs, the sheer variety of Hot Dog combinations. When your stomach is completely empty choosing one of the amazing 4 dollar gourmet hot dogs is truly daunting. The staff was friendly and we all shared a good laugh over trying to choose something. The kids had the slider kids meal baskets and they were barely able to finish them. The wife enjoyed the whitefish basket, I chose the Reuben Dog and although the corned beef was a bit tough it was extremely flavorful. To add insult to injury we also ordered the piggy fries and almost died and went to heaven at the first bite. Check this place out and please please please snap a few shots of your food to share.

Wow, wow, wow. Totally unexpected find. After slogging our way through boring, greek restaurant style food up in the UP it was quite exciting to find this place, and more exciting to eat there. We stopped in early in the week (maybe a Monday?) and they had a closed sign outside. That was disappointing, since their hours indicated they were open. Nobody answered the phone when we called. Came back the next day before the Pictured Rocks cruise, and thankfully they were back and at it. I had the chili cheese dog. It was just "naughty enough." The bun was fresh and toasted, just the right amount of chili -- no gross dripping going on here. Jeff had the fish tacos -- he's becoming something of an expert at them -- and stated they were right up there with the best he's had. That's hard with whitefish, since it can be pretty bland if not seasoned correctly. Looking forward to returning, next time we're UP north.

  • Mark B.

Very good Chicago Dog an the fries are excellent! Be warned not a lot of indoor seating. If the weather is good there are more outside.

    (4)
  • Peggy R.

Not sure what everyone sees in this place. The fries were very good, the white fish not so much. It was over cooked and over breaded, I was sorry I didn't order a hot dog. Husband had the "Home wrecker" dog and it was okay. Tried the fried mac & cheese, we had never had it before, and found it bland and kind of tasteless. The only seating is outside and drinks are only out of the can. While we were sitting there we noticed they were delivering to the pub next door that might have been a better idea.

  • Tone G.

I'm really mad I live in Chicago. If there was one eatery I would give anything for daily access to, this is it. Only get to enjoy it once or twice a year, so I'm forced to eat to the brink of discomfort. I will see you soon Johnny Dogs, real soon.

  • J S.

The reviews for this place are spot on, it's that good. Compared to the one other meal we ate in Munising this was hand down the best. I can highly recommend the fish tacos & chili dog. Honestly the best hot dog I ever had.

    (5)
  • Lynn M.

A ridiculously large menu, almost entirely surrounding hot dogs. I tried at least three kinds (Piggy, Reuben, Bob Marley) and had the cheeseburger egg rolls several times. All delicious! Highly recommended, especially since it wasn't that expensive.

  • Tom S.

Just had lunch. This place is like a really good New York deli with a sprinkle of Yooper. Do not pass this one up!

  • Emily B.

Wow, what a find! Let me preface this by saying that this restaurant is a real hole in the wall. There's not much in the way of seating, the service is nothing to write home about, and the building is literally no bigger than a small house. However, if we're going to base this on the food alone, the restaurant deserves AT LEAST five stars. The Bob Marley tacos are unlike anything I've ever tasted and the fries were exactly what I wanted. Perfectly crispy and handmade. The food is exceptional, and not just for a small town like Munising. If you're traveling through, it would be a huge mistake not to stop here for lunch or dinner.

    (5)
  • Grant W.

Stopped for dinner with my son, he ordered the whitefish tacos and I the whitefish dinner. He loved the tacos, my fish was way over fried and had a strange pepper taste to the batter. The place was busy seems like most ordered some type of hot dog. I don't think for almost $30 it was worth it. Maybe if the high school age girls who were to busy texting and singing to the music had paid more attention to the food it may have been better.

    (2)
  • Jeremy C.

This is a great little establishment with tons of character. The choices in hot dogs is larger than you might expect. The food is good (not fabulous/awesome/superb), but take the kids and enjoy a little gem in musining. I would definitely go again.

  • Steve J.

Amazing small restaurant. Hesitated when I pulled up but decided to give it a try based on Yelp reviews. Had the piggy fries, the fish tacos, and chicken BLT wrap. It was all amazing good fresh food. The fish tacos were the best my wife and I have had anywhere in America. In the Piggy fries were really yummy. This guy should be interviewed on TV for diners drive-ins and dives. Don't let the exterior fool you.

Johnny Dogs, you're my hero! Upon arrival, the foodscape in Munising looked bleak. Thanks to Yelp (once again!), I found Johnny Dogs prior to arriving in the area. After a quick check in at the motel, off we went in search of a beacon of tastiness in a sea of mediocre food choices. Boy, oh boy! I was not disappointed one bit! Johnny Dogs unassumingly sits back on Lynn St, where it seems to share a connection to a bar and their smallish parking lot. The actual spot functions more as a take-out restaurant with a few stools inside for seating. However, they offer a great deck right outside for enjoying your delicious dogs. You step right in, study the very long and diverse menu and order your little plate of amazingness. So what about the food you ask? Oh, its awe-some! Johnny's boasts a number of creative hot dog combinations, as well as whitefish tacos, mac and cheese, sandwiches, fries and more. Its hot dogs or bust here! Husband and I actually ate here two days in a row because it was so good. On one visit I tried the philly cheesesteak hot dog; with thick cut steak, melted cheese and fresh peppers; this one is a clear winner. Husband was clearly digging his Jamaican dog...all I got from him was a "yah, Mon!" We also tried the fish tacos which definitely lives up to the hype from a previous yelper. The whitefish was tender, the asian coleslaw had that perfect crunch and acidity...only issue was that there was too much sauce (which is easy to forgive). Only gripe is that both days I went, they were out of fried mac and cheese. Also, its a total 'take it or leave it' with the fries. They were good, but not memorable nor amazing. I probably would try something else instead if I were to visit again. Johnny's also boasts a great staff. They are super sweet and very accommodating. On our second time there, we brought our pups along -- they like hot dogs too! Even though we couldn't sit on their deck, they helped us set up a table right off the deck and even brought our little mongrels a hot dog of their own! Also, try their orange pop BBQ sauce. Its made in-house and is offered with a few of the menu items. They sell it as well. I tried it with my fries and it did not disappoint. I'm just sad that I didn't buy any to take home. Johnny Dogs is a definite must if visiting or traveling through Munising. Its a solid alternative to bleak dining scene in town. Johnny, thanks for rescue! You saved me from roadside diner misery and fast food hell. A superhero, indeed!

I wasn't that hungry, but I saw a cool hot dog place in Munising so I had to go. The dog was fresh hot and tasty. There were just the right amount of ingredients. I only get to Munising once a year or so, but this will be a place I stop everytime.

Are you freaking kidding me!!! We are on vacation in the Pictured Rock Area and we come across this place. Unbelievable, hot dogs, pulled pork and fries. It was so good I went 2 days in a row and got completely different hot dogs. I truly am surprised at how incredible the food was and how consistent the flavors combinations were that they used here. If you want some INCREDIBLE food and service this is the place to go. As I told them there when ask how the food was I said "It was slap yo momma good!!!!!!!!!!" This is a must stop when in Munising MI.

We were up in Pictured Rocks for a camping trip. We stopped at the Barge Inn which is directly in front of Johnny Dogs to watch the World Cup game. The Barge has menus for Johnnys at their tables. You just go back to Johnnys and they bring your order to your table at the bar. Its very convenient. The hot dogs are beef dogs and were very good. The next day we went back and ordered whitefish sandwiches. The fish is caught right there on Lake Superior and was delicious. The breading was crunchy and the fish was nice and flaky. The fries were also very tasty. We highly recommend both Johnnys and the Barge Inn.

This is the only place I'd eat a hot dog I tried the phat Elvis dog and the Chicago dog and they were the best hot dogs I've ever had. I definitely over indulged on this little escapade as I also had their loaded fries. The best artery clogging meal I've ever had. I did like the fact that they offered healthy meals as well.

Excellent food. I was happily surprised to find a place like this in Munising. Menu features more than just hot dogs; burgers, tacos, and white fish are available. I recommend the piggy fries.

  • Tom H.

This is a great lunch spot and from what I've seen, the best in town. The only major caveat is you will eat unhealthy but it will taste so good but you will enjoy an entree that you wouldn't normally. For example my wife had a hot dog with baked beans & bacon. She loved it. The fries are awesome!!

    (5)
  • Jill B.

Amazing everything! We loved the burgers, jerk chicken, and pulled pork! Fries and piggy fries are excellent! We ate there both days we were in town. We also loved the casual outdoor seating area. Would love to have one of these down state!

This is a great place to go in Munising. In my opinion there aren't any better food places there than this one. I love their whitefish and i have tried every single whitefish item on their menu and it was great. Everything is extremely fresh and menu items are very interesting to the palate. I would recommend that the owners expand the menu even more outside of burgers and dogs which are amazing. You can enjoy your meal in their garden which is beautifully landscaped. I love this place and will always visit it when I visit Munising.

This is a truly unique experience that everyone has to try once. I had the Bob Marley dog and it was fantastic. Mmm..mmmm...good. I am not a huge hot dog fan, but if you are going to eat hot dog, this is the place to do it.

My wife and I are out of towners. We went here on a recommendation from a local. We didn't even get a chance to try the food! We walk in and started looking at the menu and the guy behind the counter, possibly the owner, didn't even say "Hello, welcome to Johnny Dogs!" No, instead he says "It's going to be an 1 1/2 wait." I said "Because your food is so good." He said "No, it's a labor issue." WTH! And there were only three customers in the place. Next time we are in Muising, we WILL NOT go to Johnny Dogs!

Super friendly staff along with a truly unique menu. Don't assume they are "just another hot dog/burger joint". They have a cutting edge menu while still being kid friendly. I had the whitefish tacos with an Asian coleslaw. Delicious! Healthy portions too - I had to pass in the fourth corn tortilla. I was sad!

We ate at Johnny Dogs on a whim while passing through Munising, and are so glad we did! Neither my wife nor I are hot dog aficionados, but we do enjoy a good hot dog on the grill or at the ball game. Nothing , however, prepared us for the knockout experience at Johnny Dogs. The menu features more than 20 hot dogs, and hardest part is just choosing which one! I went with the North Carolina Dog, which features Johnny's own smoked pulled pork smothered with Orange soda BBQ sauce and coleslaw. It was OUTRAGEOUS!!! The dog was plump and cooked perfectly, and the BBQ was some of the best I've had outside of the Carolinas. The BBQ sauce, made with Orange soda, was an original recipe and sweet and tangy. Add in the coleslaw and you're left craving for more. My wife ordered the Bacon Blue Dog, which was covered with Applewood smoked bacon, crumbled Bleu cheese, and roasted garlic mayo. She could barely finish hers, but was still trying to determine what she would eat next time. And at only $4 a dog, trust me you'll want to go back a next time! This is a MUST DO when in Munising!

Great hotdogs! Although with all the toppings it seems a shame to just call them hot dogs. These are not your typical hot dog stand dogs, these are gourmet and delicious. You won't be disappointed. Great staff too! Highly recommend! Note: They only take cash or checks, no credit cards.

This quaint little storefront restaurant is the best in town. Outdoor seating for a few diners sits under a bright red awning. The simple menu is revved up by the addition of gourmet accompaniments so that the plain hot dog becomes a dazzling surprise. Everything is made fresh to order by Johnny himself working furiously, yet effortlessly, behind the counter in full view of the patrons. If you like a beer with your burger, a bar is adjacent to the restaurant where you can take your meal and add an alcoholic beverage as you dine on a lovely outdoor patio. If you visit Munising, Johnny Dogs is a MUST!!!

This place is terrific!! We had dinner last night and came back again today. Good chance we will come back tomorrow. All the food is fresh and made to order. The burger is fantastic. (I don't eat hot dogs). The fries are tasty. My boyfriend loved his hot dog and the BBQ sauce. Can't say enough great things about this place. We will back to the UP just to come here!

  • Ed F.

Vast and varied selection. Quick and friendly service. Not a lot of seating, so you may have to take it 'to-go'. On the pricey-side (dog, fries, and drink run about $7).

I was expecting a lot of good food in the area. Who would have thought the best place to eat in Munising is a hotdog joint? Orange Pop BBQ awesome & don't even pass through the area without picking up an order of Piggy Fries!

Came here for lunch & had the bacon bleu gourmet hot dog with cartelized onions. Husband had the Guadalajara dog, & shared the piggy fries. Pretty tasty, & a nice patio to sit outside on. Would come again!

I would love to try this place. I've read some great reviews and drove a long way (two hours) to get here. Sadly, at 1:00 in the afternoon, two hours after the sign says they're open, they're closed. No signs about why they're closed or when they actually will open. Better luck next time I guess...

Johnny Dogs lives up to the hype. Great hand made food and fun toppings. The hot dogs are made in house and are very tasty. Great atmosphere and a deck. It's my new favorite spot in Munising. The French fries are also home made. There is something for everyone and I can't wait to go back.

  • Mark D.

There is a little weirdness with the seating arrangements outdoors - especially considering that you can only eat outdoors - but the food makes up for it. All the dogs are fabulous, big and super tasty. The Chicago dog was my fav followed by all the dogs with bacon. And best of all the bar in the back serves cold 40's on ice. Awesome.

Unique hotdog choices and a few hamburger offerings as well. Nearly all seating is outdoors...take your sunglasses! Enjoyed the piggy fries. Convenient location for a quick dinner before the pictured rocks cruises.

Closes early. Spent a couple days in town wanting to try this place out. Most activities we did ended around 7:30 then arrived to find this placed closed so early. Yelp said 10pm so we tried again the next night to find it was incorrect. Bummer. Stay open a tad later for your tourists during peak season. Best of luck.

Johnny Dogs is great. We ate here recently, my 3 small children, husband and me. My husband had the Chicago dog and I had the Hog-Tied. These were some really good hot dogs, and I'm not really a hot-dog person. I had the garlic & dill pickle chips. So delicious. Our kids had the kids meals, two had chicken-strips and one had a plain hot dog. There weren't any complaints from them. We wanted a couple beers with our lunch on a warm summer day so we went next door to The Barge's outdoor area. Johnny Dog's brought our food over there. It was perfect. The next time we're in Munising we'll be stopping at Johnny Dogs again.

Holy cow i could roll around in the food. Maybe not.. But it was well made. Seemed like better quality ingredients and thoughtfully put together food. The bar next door was cool and they brought over the food. I'm still a little bewildered that the hubs and I liked this so much since we are not usually fond of hot dogs. Thanks for a delightful dinner of piggy dogs and Sean dogs!!

We loved this place when we popped in last year. Today it was so-so. I had the whitefish sandwich--not very good. Fishy and greasy, the bun tasted like the dirty grill. Stick with the hotdogs. Husbands pulled pork was decent. A little dry. Waitstaff is young and clueless. Ketchup? Go get it yourself inside the neighboring bar. No napkins around either. For the money I wish we had gone elsewhere and eaten quality food.

  • Patty S.

Best place to eat in Munising! Outside seating or you can have your food delivered to the bar next door. Inventive, tasty and fresh -I can't say enough.

    (5)
  • Rick R.

Ok. Their menu is daunting with 38 different things you can put on a hotdog. Decent quality wiener had chili cheese fries that were average. Place reminds me of a summer business in a seasonal shack with no seating. Not horrible, just average.

I had heard about this place quite some time ago, but I never seemed to be passing through Munising at a convenient time to eat until today. The place was hopping at 10 past noon (it is the peak of tourist season right now) but there was only one person ahead of me to order. It takes a bit of time to read the menu board even though it's small; there's just a LOT of descriptions to read through. I was eager to try the whitefish taco (how I do so love tacos...) that I had seen mentioned in another review, but alas, no taco on the board. I instead settled on a North Carolina dog with pulled pork, orange pop BBQ sauce, and house made coleslaw. It may sound weird to some, but in the south chili dogs are often served with cole slaw and it is GOOD, and many BBQ places put slaw on pulled pork sandwiches (I disagree with the practice, but whatever. While I waited for my dog I started eyeballing the details of the joint and what did I spot hanging below the menu board, but 3 little boards each with an additional item, one of which was the whitefish taco. YAY!!! I added it on. When they were done I headed out to the tiny little patio. All (2 or 3) of the tables were taken so I took the bar stool along the deck rail, which are poorly matched. I'm 6'8" and sitting on the short stool put my food at about armpit height. Oh well. I started with the taco and it was great. Crispy batter over firm, moist, flaky fish. An appropriate amount of pico and guac, lettuce, Mexican cheese, and a lime wedge. Score! Moving on to the dog I was torn. It was good, but the slaw was too sweet. I really wanted to try a bit of the orange pop BBQ by itself, but it was buried by the slaw and couldn't be separated. Overall the whole package was decent, BUT it left a taste of peanut butter on my mouth. It may be some sort of reaction between the taco and the dog, or maybe there's peanut butter on the BBQ sauce, or maybe it's just me, but for the next hour I had the taste of peanut butter on my tongue. Odd. Anyway, I'd go again in a heartbeat and try more stuff, especially for the price. I also LOVED their selection of hot sauces. Grade A.

In the area visiting Pictured Rocks Nat'l Lakeshore and stopped-in for lunch. No dogs ordered, but whitefish platter and pulled-pork sandwich was very good. The orange pop BBQ sauce was quite good on the pork. No fountain drinks, only cans, at $1.50 each, which is a bit steep. Seating is very limited also. Those two things are the only minor complaints. If in the area, give Johnny Dogs a try.

Excellent food! Creative, great tasting combinations. The hot dogs are unbelievable as are the hand cut fries. The piggy fries are awesome! We had the bacon bleu, the Elmer's chili cheese dog and just a plain hot dog. All were wonderful! The hot dogs are large and worth the price. Many wows from our family.

Had the Piggy hot dog. Excellent! Looked like they were preparing for a dinner Pig Roast. Looked, and smelled, awesome. Seating was limited, but the place has a nice vibe, and my hot dog was very good! I'd recommend them!

Basically a hot dog shack just off the main drag. There is some seating right outside and at the bar next door so don't be afraid when you walk up. Wife and I both had hot dogs. I'd say the dog itself was probably the best I've had. It was super juicy. Toppings were creative and the right amount. But a couple weren't very hot and seemed like they were sitting for a bit. Overall would recommend.

  • Elizabeth D.

The Chicago dog was great! The bun kind of fell apart two bites into it, but maybe I'm just not good at holding hot dog buns filled with pickle slices, tomatoes, and whatever else goes into a Chicago dog? Service was quick and friendly. It was a slow day, and a bit chilly, but I sat outside, and it did warm up once the sun came out. The only thing that could be improved was better fries--I think they overdid them this time. Other than that, I was pleased with the quality of the food and will be back for sure.

Not a REAL reastaurant. This is a glorifed hot dog"shack". Order in a crowded shack and eat your meal at one of only 3 tables on the deck. Best to go when you can do take away or eat in your car. Food was good, but would not call this a sensational 5 star hot dog. They may have something if they move to a REAL reastaurant facility.

I love this place! I have been here twice now while on vacation and I highly recommend. I recommend the buffalo blue dog and piggy fries. Such a guilty pleasure! My friend got a burger and redneck fries and gave rave reviews! I definitely make this a must stop place while in the area

Awesome place Walk in to the chalk board with an extensive list of mouth watering hot dogs. I ordered the South Carolina, which consisted of dog, dill pickle, coleslaw and brown mustard. And the Guadalajara, dog, avocado, pica Both were equally yummy. Everything tastes fresh. Dog was flavorful, juicy, and perfect snap. While Johnny dogs does not have a liquor license Th Barge Inn which abuts JD's welcomes hot dog lovers to their gorgeous yard with ample tables and chairs. Great service from the Barge also. The whole experience was a five for sure.

I guess I have to give it one star in order to post a review but this place does not deserve even that. How incredibly rude and unprofessional to close your establishment during regular advertised and posted hours in order to attend to another business that you operate!!! How messed up is that? Would you feel bad to know that someone has traveled a fair distance to eat at your restaurant just to find it closed "due to catering"? Make up your mind which business you are going to run and focus on that or hire enough people to operate both but don't just leave people hanging.

If you're ever in the Upper Peninsula, or just have a penchant for great, unique hot dogs, you gotta come to Johnny Dogs! Sure, hot dogs, fries, chili, and "pop" (as they call it up here) aren't the most healthy things for you, but when you want to splurge on not-so-healthy food, do it right! Johnny Dogs is located in an out-of-the-way corner of Munising- not so easy to find, but it's a small town and most everyone's nice so put away your GPS and ask a few people where the hotdog place is and they will direct you. What you'll find is a tiny house/shack with a porch situated behind some more prominent buildings- but you'll be rewarded by the search! Johnny Dogs has got virtually every type of dog you could ask for, with even more unique names, like the Junkyard Dog, the Dead Elvis Dog, and The Marky Mark Dog. Each one is filled with unique topping, and they DO NOT skimp on them. I ordered a South Carolina Gourmet Dog that came with tangy brown mustard, nice-and-sour dill pickles, housemade coleslaw (yes, it's made in-house), and celery salt (that's a spice for you non-cooks). I got a side of housecut fries and housemade baked beans. All were delicious, and it was very filling- no seconds needed. This place uses really fresh ingredients, makes most of the toppings and sides themselves, and delivers a great meal worth the drive here. They also (I hear) have great fresh (not pre- frozen) burgers, delicious chili, sandwiches, and Whitefish. Choose from a unique selection of drinks, too. Just make sure when you head on up to this place that it is open- with the U.P. weather being what it is, Johnny Dogs closes down a good part of the winter and early spring. The owner probably spends his time in South Beach then- eating, well.....hotdogs!

Huge dogs with delicious toppings. The homemade fries were also really good. It's definitely going to be a stop next time I'm in Munising, which I hope is soon!

Great hot dog joint. Great fries. WHITEFISH FISH TACOS ROCK. I had a sampling of the fish tacos, piggy fries, and North Carolina dog. All were great but the fish tacos were the best. Funky joint with cool options. This was a great surprise for a Troll in Munising on business. Will be back in town next week and will be returning.

Now that we live in Munising, we love Johnny Dogs even more. We either eat there or get carryout at least once a week. Johnny's a great guy, and his staff is excellent, too. One of the extra cool things is that if you place an order but also want a beer, you can go across the patio to the Barge Inn, and Johnny's will deliver. It's a cozy arrangement. Johnny's has some outdoor seating on the patio, and they have 2 picnic tables in the parking area, too. Since those aren't technically in the restaurant space, they welcome people with dogs to sit out there. When we've done that, Johnny sends out a bowl of water and cut up hot dogs for our pups. Everything is delicious!!! He's becoming an institution.

Drove from Western lower Michigan to munising for two things. Pictured rocks and jonny dogs. At least pictured rocks was fantastic. I would have rather had lunch in a K-mart cafeteria. They put no effort into making a dog worth the drive. Should have taken a pic of what they served. One bite was all it took achieve complete disappointment. It's unlikely i will ever give the place a second chance.

Stopped by here last month on a trip up to the U.P. with family. It was recommended by a work friend of my dad's and damn, am I glad. I got the Sasquatch dog, dad got the chili cheese, and boyfriend and brother got the home wrecker, with orders of fries and mac and cheese bites. Everything was damned good. Service was nice, too. We got to sit at the bar (I guess the restaurant is separate) and they came and brought the food to our table. The overall atmosphere of the place was really relaxed, which was just what we wanted after a four hour drive. The locals sitting at the bar were nice enough to help us with directions, too. All in all, it was memorable and I will keep this place in mind for future trips up north.

  • Sean S.

Service was average. Hot dogs nothing special and I'm still looking for the chili on the chili dog. Fries were too greasy but at least homemade. Seems like the are taking their reputation for granted. Not very clean. Kids said the pulled pork and burgers were good. Thought it was expensive for what you got.

Soooo many choices! After arriving in the U.P. after a 6+ hour car ride, I wanted something quick and delicious and thankfully Johnny Dogs delivered. I decided to go with the Piggie Fries and was not disappointed. Easily serves as a meal, and I'm glad I didn't get a hot dog to go with it because I probably would have hated myself after :) I did, however, stop the next day and try a hot dog. I ordered the Dead Elvis (pulled pork, onion rings and pineapple salsa) and some fried mac & cheese bites. The hot dog was, eh, okay. I would have gotten the piggie fries again. Mac & cheese bites were really good and the orange pop BBQ sauce/ranch combo they serve it with was a nice compliment. I'd definitely recommend a trip (or three) to Johnny Dogs when you are up here.

Decent quality food quality and price. The whitefish tacos are pretty tasty. They have quite a few unique choices on their menu. The only part that was slightly disappointing was the fries.

North Carolina dog is the best hot dog I've ever had. I've lived in Chicago and around New York, so this took me by surprise in a Michigan joint :) Do yourself a favor and make sure to have a meal here. It won't hurt if you hike to Chapel Beach beforehand either.

Hands down best hot dog I've ever eaten in MI. I had the BLT dog and it was amazing. Decided to go with the piggy fries and those were delicious as well. Sounds like you can't go wrong with anything on the menu . I definitely recommend if you are in the area.

More than just dogs.... Chicken, soup, sandwiches (like Reuben's & club). I had Wild Mushroom Bisque, BF had Piggy Dog. Both delicious!! Tried to go back for Dinner, but the whole town seems to stop serving food at 9pm (we got back late after a boat trip). I wish I had one more day just to go back to try something else on their big menu. (Went to Sydney's the night before, don't waste your money there).

I've been in town for a few days trying various takes on the local whitefish dishes. The whitefish tacos at Johnny Dogs were by far the best. The fish was fried to perfection with no fishy taste. Definitely a great place to stop in after a long day on the lake or hiking in the park. I'll be back here for sure on my next trip to the UP.

  • J R.

In a place as void of gastronomical delights as Michigan's upper peninsula, Johnny Dogs shines. I hesitate to call a guy making hot dogs, chef, but Chef John is doing it right. You can travel 250 miles in any direction and not get a culinary opportunity the same as at Johnny dogs. Two dogs and a Cuban under 20 bucks for the wife and I and not one bite wasn't worth the calories. It is good food. Get there when you are there for sure. If you are traveling, it is a fast stop off the main road with fast service and a chef who is thoughtful (cutting my Cuban into 3 sections to make it more road worthy).
