I have been going up to the Munising area for 20 years, and it's always been a challenge to find really good restaurants. Haywire is my new favorite, as it is the best food I've ever had in the area. On a recent trip, I ordered the cod and fries. The fish was perfectly cooked and not overbreaded. The fries were deliciously thin and on the crispy side. We were there in the middle of the afternoon, so it was very quiet. Another table came in and ordered desserts, which looked fantastic (and huge!). The view out the back windows had yellow finches and hummingbirds frequenting the feeders. This is a place worth going out of your way for. I will be back!

Came here for our 38th anniversary. Not fancy until you try the food. This is bottom line the best restaurant in all the UP. You have to try the specials and the home made deserts. Tip. Try the maple butter on the rolls!

This restaurant was AMAZING! By far the best place to eat in Munising. Staff made you feel welcome, food was sensational and the experience was memorable. My only complaint is this place is too far from my home, I can't wait to come back on my next vacation!

Stopped on the way through from West UP to bridge. Restaurant was very clean, and extremely kid-friendly. We had our three kids (ages 6, 4, and 3); and the owner's grandson, Andre, was more than willing to share his toy cars and play while we waited for our food. However, it was an extremely short wait! I ordered a basket of biscuits for the kids to share as an app, and they were delicious with the maple pecan butter. The owner said she makes them fresh! There was an extensive garden out back, and I suspect they grow a lot of what they use. I had the chicken and biscuits, which was very good like my mother in law makes. The hand cut French fries were great, as was the grilled chicken sandwich my husband had. Disappointed that I was too full to try any desserts! Will have to try them next time. And there will definitely be a next time, as this family owned business deserves support! They are right off the snowmobile/ATV trails. Stop by!

I was visiting Munising for a long weekend and decided to try The Haywire because of the positive reviews on Trip Advisor. There are not many restaurants to choose from in the area, so I was a little skeptical. The restaurant was clean and well maintained, the service was pleasant and friendly, and the food was good. They also had a decent craft beer selection. They served fresh biscuits for the table, which tasted very good. Before I knew this, I ordered the Chicken and Biscuits Supreme. It was biscuit overload, but I won't blame them for this. The meal was a hearty home style comfort food dish and as very satisfying. The food tasted freshly prepared. My wife ordered a steak and mashed potatoes, which she said was just OK. Overall, this is a decent restaurant that serves fresh tasting food. I would recommend this place to others.

Stopped by here for lunch the day after we took a cruise to see Pictured Rocks. We are out-of-towers from the Detroit Metro area. The food was just as good as everyone says... all homemade and delicious. Our party of four collectively had the Crab Cakes for an appetizer... the Supreme Chicken and Biscuit, the Pork Steak, the Hot Beef Special, the House Salad and Cream of Broccoli Soup for entrees... and the Ice cream Sandwich for dessert. The lady who served us was so nice... she even gave us two slices of pie free-of-charge because we couldn't decide on which of their desserts we wanted. Lastly, we sat next to the windows on a rainy day... and there were a bunch of hummingbirds and other birds that kept coming to the feeders right next to the windows. Made for some nice photo ops of those cute, little birds. If you're visiting Pictured Rocks... make the 15 min drive to eat here.

This is not your typical rural UP restaurant. You know the kind I am talking about where you get a pasty with a side of gravy that comes through a spout from a 55 gallon drum out back... There are a lot of really well done made from scratch dishes here such as the chicken and biscuits, pizza dough (baked in a clay oven), home-cut french fries and desserts. The first time I went I practically interrogated the server (who was also the owner) about the breading on the fried perch. I am very particular about not getting fish that has too much breading. Theres is lightly breaded, just enough to make it crispy and not overpower the fish. It was very good. I had a homemade bread pudding for dessert that had a homemade bavarian cream sauce. Next time I am going to ask for a bowl with just the cream sauce in it, it was so good. Outside of Marquette, the UP doesn't have the best reputation for good quality food but I am hoping with places like The Haywire that will start to change.

This is a great restaurant to spend your time and money! Everything is home made and tastes like it with great flavor and visual appeal. I had a salad that on the menu came with breaded chicken. I asked if I could have grilled chicken instead and they happily made the change. All the salad ingredients were fresh and the chicken was cooked perfectly. It was a delicious salad. My companions got the whitefish basket and fries, the whitefish was perfectly breaded with a very light and lightly seasoned batter. She said it was some of the best whitefish she has had. My other friend got the mushroom Swiss burger with sweet potato fries and said it was very good. We all split home made coconut cream pie which was to die for and a home made ice cream sandwich that was equally delicious. The ice cream cookie was made out of two large home made peanut butter cookies that had mm's in them and vanilla ice cream. It was huge and scrumptious and we loved it.

I'm not certain what dish the other reviewer had. I didn't have the best meal ever, but their food is all homemade, and delicious. (Worthy of 5 stars from me, which say 'go back again!) The staff is super friendly. We showed up at 7pm on a weekday, and they were out of their signature chicken dish as well as several desserts. Note to others: go during prime dinner time or earlier.

We were really disappointed in our recent trip to The Haywire. My family and I (husband and 3 small kids) were visiting from out-of-state and stopped here in part to the good reviews on the internet and from family in the area who've eaten here. Our waitress was great. She was very friendly and we were seated right away. We ordered off of the children's menu for the kids, and my husband and I both ordered steaks. We had the $22 rib-eye and he added shrimp to his order. We had homemade biscuits & butter which were super good and the salad was fresh and tasty as well. When the rest of the food arrived, one of our son's orders was messed up. The waitress was apologetic but my son agreed to the switch so no worries there. Our steaks were thin, around a half inch thick. It was what you'd expect for a "steak and eggs" breakfast not a $22 rib-eye. It was seasoned well though. I ordered mine medium-rare and it was grey. Very grey. I hate eating well-done steak and I figured since I was paying $22 for it, it should be cooked to my request. I politely asked my waitress for a new steak since it was over done. She was apologetic and nice about it. I didn't make a big-deal about it either because I'm not one to generally complain about food. The steak goes back. 5 minutes later, the steak is returned to me by a new waitress. She puts it in front of my face and slices into another part that happens to be slightly more pink than grey. She says they're cooking me a new steak, but basically I'm wrong and the original was cooked medium-rare. Oooo-k. Great customer service skills, lady. The new steak comes out. The new waitress tells me to cut it open to make sure it's ok. Her tone was less than friendly. I smile and say yes, because it's starting to get uncomfortable. It still was medium-well at best. But I suppose it's hard not to overcook such a thin piece of meat. I can't comment on the fries and cabbage as they weren't returned with the new steak. They asked if I wanted to keep them when I sent the original steak back and said no, because I was ok with them returning with the new steak. I think I was being punished for returning the steak, really I do. So, a couple of beers, 3 kids meals with water, a good salad and biscuits, one plate of fries and cabbage, two terribly over-priced steaks and 4 shrimp = $79.00!! We won't be going back. If this is how they treat people, I'm not sure how they've gotten such good reviews.

The Haywire is the best food in Munising. Period. You must go. It is only 15 minutes outside of Munising, MI and is a must stop for anyone visiting the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The restaurant is very inviting, welcoming, and impeccably clean. Great for a romantic dinner or family outing. It has that small-town feel with big-city high-quality food at an affordable price. The meals here are fresh and homemade and you don't feel like a human mudslide after you're done eating. The owners, Kevin, Nora, and their son, Patrick, love their restaurant and their patrons. Our waitress, Brittany, was very nice as well. Patrick is a professionally trained chef who takes great pride in his product. He makes the best fresh lightly battered fried perch you have ever eaten in your life. IN YOUR LIFE. It was perfect. Fresh and not too heavy. Amazing. I ordered two rounds of perch our second night there. I could not get enough. Patrick and Nora brought our food right out to us and chatted with us. Very friendly. If you're lucky, you can get a spot next to the giant picture windows and watch the hummingbirds and other wildlife while you eat. Nora bakes like nobody's business. Her pastie is better than any you will find in downtown Munising. She makes the dough, bread, and desserts from scratch. I nearly licked the Bavarian cream sauce right off my plate when I was through with her bread pudding but didn't because that is not socially acceptable. Eating at this restaurant was one of the highlights of our trip. I only wish it were closer to us. I would go all the time. We will definitely return. The Haywire is worth the short drive out of town. Do not miss this amazing diamond in the rough culinary experience. There are not enough stars to give. A must.

At 6:30PM, with three empty tables in the small restaurant, we were told it would be better to go elsewhere. It would take at least an hour and a half to get food. The food maybe good but this isn't the reception we imagined.

Just finished dinner with my family of 5 and had the most wonderful meal. So much so that I was inspired to write my first Yelp review. I read them all the time and in fact other great reviews helped us choose Haywire while visiting the UP. All food was exceptionally good and the service was the best I can remember receiving. Besides our waitress being very friendly and welcoming, the chef visited our table 3 times to check on us and answer a few questions about food choices. We had steak, shrimp, pizza, burger, and 5 desserts. Again, all very very good. Give Haywire a try.

Great food. I had bluegill! Its kind of rare to find that fish available. My wife got humus with chips which was good. The turtle pie and homemade Ice cream sandwiches were amazing! This restaurant is much closer to Munising than it is to Manistique.
