"We're going to Shield's." Sure, why not. I hadn't been here for at least 4 years, so I figured I'd be okay with going. I remembered it being better than Cloverleaf (which is where they also suggested going), at least. I got an antipasto salad with a small square pizza with bacon and jalapenos. I'm telling you, it's normally an outstanding combination... I almost always order my pizza with those toppings if they're available. Alright, the salad. The personal salad was six bucks, which seemed kind of high, but then I got it... it's really a pretty big salad. There was a hefty amount of ham and salami and cheese on it, and I couldn't quite finish it all. The salad also comes with bread sticks, which are ridiculously pillowy... like "I could see myself sleeping on these" pillowy. They have a slight garlic/parmesan/butter/herb flavor to them, but it's not overdone... tasty enough to me that I had three of them. Whoops. Before too long, the pizza came (See: Picture below). It ultimately cost $10, I think, because I only had two toppings. The table seemed to think the pizza was good, but -- wait for it -- not better than Cloverleaf. HA! I don't *love* Shield's pizza, but it's better than Cloverleaf by quite a margin... at least the crust at Shield's isn't a soggy mess. My main reason for not giving five stars is pretty simple. First, they don't put nearly enough sauce on their pizza. Sure, I could order extra, but I shouldn't have to. Second, the bacon was just... weird. Almost like a shredded bacon jerky. It still had a nice flavor to it, but this is definitely not the best pizza I've had. I kind of regret going to Pequod's in Chicago because it pretty much ruins any other square/pan pizza for me. I'll break Shield's pizza down for you: Crust: 4/5 Above average. Nice buttery flavor. Nice crunch, but not "Holy shit that was a sharp edge, I'm bleeding!" worthy. Not greasy, which gets big points from me. Sauce: 3.5/5 Average-ish. Very clearly fresh made, but pretty forgettable. Actually, I MAY agree with the assessment that Cloverleaf has better sauce. Like I already said too, they don't put enough on. Cheese: 4.5/5 Some sort of fresh, fancy mozzarella (?) they use on this pizza. Comparable with cheese I've had on some of my favorite pizzas. The best part. Toppings: 3/5 Kind of bummed that I got jalapeno and bacon, for once. The jalapeno was fine... pickled jalapenos with nice briny goodness. That weird bacon jerky thing they have going on doesn't do it for me though... what the hell gives? Just gimme bits of thick cut bacon. My review is more of a 3.5 or... 3.75 rating. Oh well. Four's close enough. This is still a fine, well maintained pizza place with fair prices, and average beer prices -- though they do have a lot of different specials. As far as craft beer, don't come here for this. The craftiest beer they have here is what most places have: Sam Adams, Leinenkugel, and Blue Moon.

The only reason I am giving 2 stars is because my husband loved his pizza... I on the other hand am very upset. I have Celiac Disease, and so when I saw that Shield's had a gluten free pizza I was super excited. All in all, the pizza tasted great...but about 10 minutes later I was incredible sick. The gluten free pizza was NOT gluten free or it was contaminated with gluten from somewhere else in the kitchen. If you have Celiac Disease, this restaurant is not safe!!!

Had the dubious honor to get pickup at Shields, ordered a antipasto salad, breadsticks, and two pizza a pepperoni and meat lovers type. Was pricey to say the least, well the salad was very good to start and then it went rapidly south from there. The pizza was well in one word the most disappointing I have ever had, the meat lover had a extremely sweet taste to it, like some one had poured a lot of sugar in the tomato sauce and forgot to stir. My wife and eaten there before and raved about it. If we could give no stars we would, and no I will never eat there again, in fact if I walk into a family get together and see that pizza I will run the other way.

Have only had the square pizza and bread sticks here and both were average. The ranch they have for dipping sauce is gross. Now that they opened a Buddy's right down the street I'd go the extra few miles to get Buddy's.. way better!

Offspring of the original Shields Restaurant on Davison in Detroit. Nice place, large enough to have a separate dining room for banquets and private events. We arrived without advance reservations and were placed on the waiting list, along with 3 or 4 other parties. I was told the wait would be probably less than 5 minutes. Had I brought a stop watch, I'm sure it would have proved the hostess correct. Gluten free pizza is available and on the menu. Trina was our server tonight, a most pleasant staff member. She really rounded out the dining experience to make it a pleasurable one. A Michigan Salad was ordered for my dining party of two. It was honestly enough to have as a regular meal. And so very good! What was I thinking when I ordered a large Meat Lover's pizza to follow the salad? Half of the pizza was eaten, half was placed in a to-go box. The deep dish pizza was every bit as good as the pizzas I remember from the Detroit days when Shield's and Buddy's were just a stone's throw apart from each other (not that they were throwing stones AT each other, mind you). Excellent, delicious deep dish pizza, hands down. They also feature Sanders products (chocolate and fudge toppings), as well as Stroh's Ice Cream and Sanders Bumpy Cake. Coke products are the featured soft drinks. No military discount, but they have a Seniors discount (65 and over).

Very slow & unprofessional service. Tried this place three times, each time the pizza was undercooked so the cheese was gross. They also didn't have the best sanitary conditions.

Too lazy to cook at home, so my wife and I came here on a quiet Wednesday night. We are new to the area so slowly trying to discover the hidden gems in the Shelby/Macomb area. The order of 8 wings was delicious, meaty wings in buffalo sauce. They were large wings and dipped in blue cheese, I could not have asked for better. The small meat lover's pizza was 4 heavenly slices of some of the best Detroit pizza I've had to date. I mean it was baked to perfection. Not too greasy. The toppings were flavorful and did not overpower the pizza with salt. The crust was fluffly on the inside, crispy with sharp corners on the outside. Excellent pizza, very good wings, and good customer service. I highly recommend this Shield's. Who would have thought you could get some of the best Detroit pizza this far north from the city? Yum.

Lately I've gone there for a company meeting and it's in the back room. While it's nice to have a private area it seems like they can't get it right. We're always the ones moving the chairs, asking them to turn off the music so we can hear each other, and last time the DVD player didn't work and we couldn't complete our full meeting. The service is great! How they keep track of 25 orders is beyond me, but they do, said no tip and didn't charge those who just had drinks. This last visit I ordered the French onion soup with the Greek salad. Both were very good and the soup was served hot. One thing though is the prices- those were $11 and that's without chicken on the salad. All sandwiches were $8-9 with fries, onion rings, soup or salad an additional $1-3. Good food, variety of choices but a bit more than I would like to pay for a lunch.

I have been a customer at the Macomb Township location for over 10 years. My family & I would go there for dinner at least twice a month. My last experience was horrible and so disappointing. We had a salad that had a horrible after taste. I asked the waitiress if it was a salad from a bag. She came back and said it was and we then asked to talk to the manager, Larry. Larry came to our table and informed us they have been using salad from a bag for over a year and how can we JUST NOW be noticing it. I couldn't believe the attitude we received from him. I do not make myself a salad from a bag for myself let alone go to a restaurant and PAY for a salad that came out of a bag. The attitude from Larry was appalling! Unfortunately Shields of Macomb Township, you have lost a long standing customer as we will NOT be back and it's not because of the salad in a bag...it's because the Larry's attitude. Maybe he should treat his customers (long time or not) with a little more respect especially considering the fact we were there on a Saturday between 5 and 6pm and there were only a handful of patrons. Horrible. Will NEVER go back. Will go to a restaurant that appreciates our business!

Went here a few times with the wife, good place. Definitely recommend the Meat lover's pizza, and for appetizers the Nachos and the French Onion soup . We tried the Supreme style pizza and the breadsticks the 2nd visit, it was good but we enjoyed the Meat lover's pizza more. breadsticks weren't worth writing home about. Overall, the Meat lovers pizza is highly recommended

I remember the "Original" Shield's pizza in Detroit from my youth - and sadly this isn't it. Is the pizza good? Yes, I suppose so - but in my book it's nothing over the top. Certainly not like I remember it to be. There is very little sauce (on top) of the pizza, so it's a bit dry, and honestly? The sauce is so sweet I don't think many could handle a lot of it on their pie. It's something you really have to be in the mood for. I do like that you can get an "individual" (4 slice) pizza, and the salads are HUGE. The last few times I've been there I've tried a variety of things - steer clear of the pasta dishes - the sauces appear to be "Pizza Sauce" based, the potato skins were decent, as were the cheese sticks. I guess nothing here "wowed" me. It was good food, not great food - not overly expensive, but not cheap either. This would be a good choice if you're really craving a hot, fresh pizza and looking for an upgrade to a $5 hot-n-ready. I've eaten in both the dining room and the bar and service has always been excellent, and it's always clean inside. The dining room is super kid friendly, but not over run with children either.

The pizza is sooo good at Shield's. It's that awesome Detroit style deep dish with the crunchy corners filled with saucy cheesy deliciousness. And it's not greasy, either. The handtossed rounds are pretty good, but square is really the way to go. The salads are always fresh and cold, but consist of iceberg lettuce rather than "fancier" romaines and such. The garlic bread is great, too - seems like if you get a salad with your pizza you get free bread (maybe 2 pcs for a small salad, 3-4 for a medium? I can't figure this special bread formula out). And the beer is cold, and it seems like they have good beer specials. Here's the thing: you come here for the pizza, not for the service. It's never awesome. And it's a family place, so expect to see some sassy kids running around - eating at a table in the bar area is an easy remedy to that situation.

Good pizza, the stars are for the pizza and servers. very pricey place unless you have a coupon then it's avarage. They just hiked up there prices and now mozzarella sticks are 10$ and there large super pizza is $20 wtf! Really? Guessing the reason is thy won't be around for too long then.

I live near Toledo, but my husband & I had a doctors appointment way the hell out in this area... Needless to say my kids & hubby were hungry afterwards so we used yelp and found this place;0) We originally were going to go to another pizza place in the area w/5 stars, but decided on shields that had 4.5 stars because it offered a menu on yelp ;0) As soon as we walked in we were greeted and seated by a friendly smiley host and not even a minute later our waitress Rachel greeted us again and got our drink orders and answered any questions we had. I'm typically super picky and I don't really care for pizza anymore because it always sucks everywhere we go! Anyways I immediately asked our waitress for a side of ranch, Greek and tartar sauce so I could decide what I wanted to eat and all their dressings were awesome! Hands down Shields had the Best pizza my family and I have had in forever! My husband had the fish and chips dinner that came with a nice sized salad & fries plus he ordered 2 extra pieces of fish ( my husband is 6'4 & 260lbs ) he was totally satisfied! I had the small Greek salad and it was big I actually wasn't able to finish it even though I wanted to;0) we ordered our kids the special- small spicy pepperoni and cheese for $8.99... It had 6 big slices and tasted fantastic! Before we were finished the owner or manager ( not sure who he was) came over and asked how everything was and wished us a good night definitely liked how attentive all the staff was and the quality of the food;0) Our bill was only $34 for everything which was totally worth it! We left our waitress a $10 tip and if I ever have to drive another hour and half into that area again I wouldn't hesitate to eat here again! Thanks for the fast, friendly, attentive service, clean environment & affordable good food;0)

A couple of years ago I vowed to never eat deep dish pizza from anywhere but Jet's due to a growing disappointment with the quality of said pies in and around metro Detroit. After attending a family part at Shield's this past weekend, I have broken my vow! Holy crust! Just as thick as Jet's but not quite as greasy. I love greasy pizza as much as the next but seriously when you set a slice on a napkin and the paper dissolves immediately... Anyways, the sauce was not too acidic and slightly sweet. Also it was on top of the cheese the way it should be so as to ensure the thick crust cooks properly under the layers of delicious toppings. Let's talk about those toppings-fresh NOT canned mushrooms and the cheese tasted freshly grated and similar to the blend used at Loui's by the race track. Definitely not that processed barf blend passed off at the major chains. The pizza was preordered for the party and on the plain side as far as toppings go but after checking out their website am excited to try their specialty pizzas. We started with antipasto salad which was excellent. The produce was fresh and the dressing homemade. The only complaint I had was that they didn't cut the lettuce or tomatoes small enough. I hate getting a 1/2 head on my plate then having to awkward try to cut it up with a butter knife. All things considered I think I may have a new favorite for deep dish. I probably would not return to eat in due to the large number of unruly children and trailer park residents that visit this location. I serious as a heart attack saw a guy in cut off sweat pants and NO SHOES standing in the foyer waiting to be seated with his 5 unwashed Kool aid moustache kiddos when I was leaving. This was, of course, a hilarious spectacle but I sure as hell wouldn't want to be seated next to that carnival-o-hepatitis. This in no way reflects on the restaurant or food, however, and I will gladly drive the 25 minutes for this pizza from now on.

Best deep dish around. The crust and toppings are excellent. Also give the antipasto salad a try. It's loaded with cheese and meat and the dressings is great. Cost more than your average pizza place but well worth it. The restaurant is nice too and there is a full menu with many other good alternatives to pizza.

Shields is good stuff. This location is kind of precariously placed in a strip mall, and there's not much around on the opposite side of the street. You'd have to really seek it or to go here. That being dais, the food is good. For pizza, Shields is Detroit style pizza that's better. I'm not a sq pizza fan or fan of the D style, however something about the cheese or dough here makes it good. I can't quite put my finger on what but if I was to have a craving for that, I'd go here. The French onion soup here is super flavorful, and good. I also like the sandwiches and wraps. They are surprisingly tasty for a place that primarily people think of for pizza. You have a few side options with sandwiches too which is nice. This location is really large with a full bar , but seem empty in the bq area and dining area. Again I say that is probably due to the business location. Can make for a good conversation place but if you're looking for a sports bar atmosphere you won't really get that here. Overall quality food, reasonable prices, nice place with friendly attentive staff.

Went here last week with the whole family my parents ordered a full slab of ribs and said it was by far the worst ribs they've ever had. I ordered their chicken Parmesan and was also disappointed. I'll stick to my homemade chicken parm. The rest of the family ordered pizza and it looked fantastic though.

Carry out order: Pleasant and polite phone conversation. Wait time: Slightly more than expected. Food Item: Gluten free pizza. Soggy, stuck to the pan, not cut into slices, and pathetic quality at best. Advice: If gluten free, order some where else. You will only have buyers remorse. Even frozen pizzas do better than the quality of gluten free pizza at Shield's.

I love eating here! The best part is indulging into their warm crispy cheese bread appetizer...it is flawless. I came here with my boyfriend and his family over the weekend, and it was our second time eating at this fairly new location. The place was super busy yet our waitress didn't miss a beat. For that reason I felt this particular Shield's deserved a yelping. Now, I'm not the biggest fan of deep dish style, but my usual order is a small Pepperoni Prize which consists of four irresistibly yummy square slices of cheese and pepperoni pizza for $8.25. The only downfall for me is if I try to eat more than one slice then tums will be my dessert! Since I already had my cheese bread fix I didn't want to overdue it, so I ordered a tuna melt instead. My sandwich was huge and the tuna tasted fresh with warm swiss cheese on top. I like that even though pizza is clearly the specialty you can still order a good burger or sandwich here too. Shield's also offers free refills on beverages, and not too many places still do that. I also think they offer good beer and mixed drink specials. This is a good place to watch a game. At least you will have greasy delicious food and reasonably priced draft beer. Oh and you can play Club Keno...need I say more!
