You know, I have driven past Thomas' oomphtienth times, but never once did it occur to me to stop in. Perhaps its the unassuming building, or the sign that states "catering", but nothing ever screamed "come eat here", to me. Now I go through phases where you practically need a stick to keep me away from here. Thanks to our accountant (we left the Big Lunch Decision up to him), Erin and I had a chance to check out this quiet little senior citizen hotspot. Im not gonna lie, walking in the door I was quickly wondering if complimentary Bingo cards came with your meal. My skepticism quickly faded once I got a glimpse of the menu. Alot of items actually sounded good. But they surely had to be underseasoned, right? WRONG. I have tried a ton of different things off the menu, and overall we liked the majority of them! They serve delicious, fresh soups (try the yummy, albeit messy French Onion), cold, crisp and absurdly fresh salads with a killer ranch, and a large variety of sandwiches and entrees Some winners are the broasted chicken (come to mama you moist little birdie!), polish fare, tuna salad sandwich (not your typical boring 'ole tuna, think capers!), and baked sghetti. They have great specials as well, if you sign up for their newsletter you will receive a free meal on your birthday and weekly specials My absolute favorite meal I have ever had here was a special, and I really, really wish they would put it on the regular menu. HI Thomas' management, Im talking to you! At one point they had a pulled turkey with cranberry mayo sandwich on offer, with a side of sweet potato fries. Erin kinda curled his nose at it upon ordering, which was good 'cause, well, more for me! Holy deconstructed-Thanksgiving-meal-between-two-pieces-of-bread Heaven! Unfortunately we did experience two misses, both had the same issue: mushyness. The meatloaf has got great spices and seasoning, but the meat seems overworked and the consistency is off. I have experienced the similar issue with the turkey burger. Overall we find the service friendly and fast, and the value of the food served, great! They do have a liquor license, and appear to have a pretty alright selection of wine and specialty drinks. However, I cannot resist making fun of the slices of bread that are packed in little baggies. They kinda crack me up! All things considered, we really like this place. Go on, give it a try! The cutesie old folk wont bite, I promise!

Do you like breasts? Beautiful white breasts. Of course I'm talking about chicken. When my co-worker told me that Thomas's has broasted chicken I thought we'd give this place a try. He was telling me how good it is because he'd been here many times himself. They have a couple nice broasted chicken meal offers. I opted for the two breast meal of course. The chicken was hot, and real juicy and not greasy. The fries are real good. Hand made like my favorite coney place down the street. the price was a tad bit high but it generally is for all white breast meals. The restaurant is a real nice family restaurant. A little bit more "classy" for a family restaurant. Nice atmosphere. Oh and clean bathrooms. I like broasted chicken but haven't found a good place to get it. Two of the restaurants that I had frequented are now closed. This is another nice place for a lunch venture in Livonia.

Twice!! They did it again. I brought Cher and what can I say. Both times excellent. Cher had Sunrise... yummy the best bacon an perfect hash browns. This sliced wonderful rye toast I had the Polish Skillet. Delicious. . Clean clean place. I judge kitchens by bathrooms. See for yourself why I give this place such praise and my Moose rating of 4 Stars. Service excellent.

This review is long overdue. I visited the great city of Detroit last year and this place has been on my mind ever since. It was a cold wet night as I was craving Polish food. Having never had it before I felt what better place to try it than in Detroit. Well I punched the address into my rental's GPS and drove away. As I walked in the door I noticed that they'd be closing in about 15 minutes. I let them know I did not want to keep them from getting home but they were all smiles from the hostess to the my waitress. They told me to take my time, that they still to clean up after they closed so no worries. I ordered the polish trio and a broasted half chicken 1) thinking I was that hungry and 2) figuring the trio would be a sample size. WRONG! I just finished the polish trio an only bit into my chicken to taste it while it was hot as my waitress recommended. It was all so delicious! I killed the stuffed cabbage and sauerkraut! Never had I tasted homemade sauerkraut and who would ever think cabbage could be so good. Everything else on the plate was spot on. I love fried chicken and the broasted chicken was good but I can't give it a fair evaluation because I was so stuffed with everything else. I will definitely have to try it again when I am back there. The sad part in this reviewer's mind- that Thomas' is all the way in Detroit (Livonia) an I am all the way here in California.

When I saw Polish food near where I was staying in Detroit I got really excited. I love me some sauerkraut pierogi. The menu here is diner/home cooking favorites. The Polish food selections are what I'd consider Americanized Polish, or, "Pittsburgh" Polish. City chicken, halupki, pierogi, potatoes, Kraut - all the usual things I'd see at Polish food fests in my home of Western PA. This isn't really traditional Polish food like bigos, but it was still very good. I ordered the Polish platter and it was almost nostalgic. Not nostalgia for any time I spent in Poland, but more for the kind of American style Polish food I had in PA.

We went here recently and the food was delicious! A good sign was that when we walked in the place was packed. We all ordered the polish dishes (pierogis, city chicken, kielbasa...) It came out in good time with plenty of the toppings like butter and sour cream. I love the variety in the bread baskets. Different kinds of bread and breadsticks. It reminds me of the old polish restaurants I went to while growing up as a kid in Detroit. The drinks were always kept filled and the waitress was friendly. I'm looking forward to going back!

We were looking for a place close to an activity we were doing and this fit the bill. It seems everyone knew everyone here and I can see why. Great tood, friendly staff and huge portions. They were kind enough to let us keep our left overs in their fridge until we got back from our activity. If you're in the area give this place a shot, I doubt you'll be disappointed. French onion soup was some of the best we've had. Great salads also.

Tonight was the 3rd time we have been here and think we will be back for breakfast not dinner. The first time we ate here we had a very nice breakfast. But last time and this time dinner was not the best. The tables are too close together, waitresses bumping into you all the time. Tonight the waitress blamed my son for her dropping food, it clearly was her fault. You should never blame something on the customer!! Then she mocked him...so tasteless! The dinner food is ok, some of the food came out cold, meatloaf was mushy and city chicken was dry. The salads are good and so is the breakfast. I would only recommend breakfast here.

I ate there Thursday for breakfast, had eggs Benedict.Felt really rushed to order the waitress seemed in a hurry the place was not busy so I don't understand her being that way. Food came and the first thing I noticed was that the sauce on the eggs was broke and did not look that appealingly,I ordered some sauce on the side and that also was broke sauce.I would not order eggs Benedict there again.

Went there for breakfast today. Food was good and so was the service. I thought the prices were a little on the higher side but they do state they use local products which would cost more. Place is really really clean. The rest rooms were nice and spotless.

A-Mazing! Everything is fresh fresh fresh!! You won't believe the walleye! The prices are right, the service is amazing and the food is consistently delicious. The only thing I've had so far that I would rate below a four star are the fries. I don't think they are homemade. Everything else is though, event he croutons for the salad! Yum Yum! Don't forget to sign up for their emails for special deals!

This is my new favorite breakfast place. The food was delicious, large portions, service was excellent, and reasonable prices. I tried the eggs Benedict, the eggs were perfectly poached with runny yolk and solid whites. Expertly prepared homemade hash browns, inside fully cooked and outside was crispy. Love the hollandaise sauce too! I will definitely be back, again and again.

I see why this place is busy. Nice are, good parking and a wide variety of food. Cheery staff. I had a tuna sandwich, tasted good. Don't understand why places feel obligated to use an entire can of tuna. When you make a sandwich at home, how much do you use? I get about 3 sandwiches out of one can. Okay, am I cheap? Don't think so, I do actually taste the tuna on the bread. My friend had chicken fried steak which looked quite good and could get extra gravy for his potatoes. Nice place.

This review is really a 3.5 than a four... I came this morning for breakfast. While the menu here is extensive, I would say the breakfast portion is the smallest... I ended up getting the side of biscuits and gravy. It was very good. It came with two good sized biscuits and a generous portion of sausage gravy. The ambiance is very nice. It's not your normal "coney island" type of setting. I'd say it is a step up. They also serve beer and wine, which isn't something you always see at a coney island type of restaurant. The thing that really disappointed me was the service. When I was originally shown a table I waited quite awhile for someone to ask what I wanted to drink. The hostess saw I was still waiting and asked if I wanted a cup of coffee... When the waitress did come, she wasn't the most pleasant. She was more interested in larger parties. Sorry I didn't come with 8 other people... They have a lot of nice dinner options, so I'm sure I'll be back. Hopefully the service will be better.

This was my first time here and I must admit I was very pleased. I went with the Polish plate which was a good helping of food. Even came with a nice garden sale. At other places a garden salad is nothing more than se greens and a cucumber on the side. This was a large salad with carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, croutons. I was quite impressed! The main entree was very tasty. Some polish food tastes like cardboard, not here. The lack of star is due to the service. Our waitress was very slow to get refills and double slow to get our check. Maybe an off day? The prices really weren't that bad either. For $14, the Polish plate filled me up. I'll definitely be back.

Saturday / Sunday Breakfast. Good luck getting a seat. Get there as early as possible. This place is great, all the way from the wait staff to the food. Everyone loves to look at the little kids that are coming in, in fact all the wait staff has to see what everyone is wearing. Even the manager of the resturaunt is waiting or clearing tables. That is how dedicated they are. Everyone pitches in. The food is always great. Cherry almond pancakes, cinnamon swirl French toast... Chocolate flavored chocolate chip pancakes. Thomas's is the place to go for breakfast. You might have a small wait... But it is all worth it. Try it!!! You won't be disappointed!

I came back here to eat tonight after having visited it last year while on a business trip. I had the broasted chicken (4.5), mashed potato's with gravy (4.5), a side salad (4.5) and a slice of Texas toast. I also tried a cup of their split pea soup (4). This place serves very good food. It is one of those rare locally owned restaurants that get it right. I can understand why it has been in business for a long time. The restaurant is the kind if place where you can eat breakfast, lunch and dinner and not get tired of eating here because it's good food with a varied menu. Also the table service is very good. When I add up the food scores and then factor in their low prices Thomas deserves a 5. This place is a winner !!!

Better than your average diner or family resturant. We did breakfast and for two people it was wonderful. Good and fast service, knowledgable about their offerings and willing to adjust to take slightly special orders. Offering more than just scrambled eggs - like their Cherry and Walnut and multi-grain toast options. The sausage links were noticeable - not the brown server type - but fresh and flavorful - Sage. Worth trying.

yes, the food is very good and wait staff is also very good...But Mark has an attitude and for someone that is the owner this cannot and will not be tolerated. If he cannot be pleasant to all his customers then we will stay away. Too bad because he lost 4 very good customers.

I haven't been to Thomas' for anything but breakfast, with that being said I haven't been disappointed. The staff is friendly, the food is good and the restaurant is clean. Just a heads up - if you go during peak breakfast times on the weekends, you will be in for a wait! So try and get up a little early

We found this restaurant when we landed at Detroit Metropolitan Airport at 8 am. We wanted a good breakfast and were willing to drive 20 minutes. We made a GREAT CHOICE! First, our waitress, Pam, was wonderful. She was friendly, helpful, and had a fun personality. I ordered their Polish Skillet. It was delicious! The eggs were fresh and the hash browns (with kielbasa) was very tasty. My brother-in-law had the Sunrise Breakfast (he liked it so much he ordered extra eggs). My sister ordered kielbasa, hash browns, and eggs. She loved the hash browns. Do yourself a favor and go there. It is an AWESOME BREAKFAST RESTAURANT!

I was looking for an independent breakfast spot while in Livonia on the weekend and was psyched to find Thomas's Family Restaurant with a little help from a Yelp search. This family-run place, which shows very little fanfare from the street as you drive up, is housed in a typical mid-century building along this busy strip of Plymouth Road. Nevertheless, it rated a rare 4.5 on Yelp-town and that is all it took to get my attention. What I found inside was a very classy dining room with accent lighting shining on...believe it or not...some very tasteful contemporary art on the walls. Loved the carpeted floors, the low lighting and the private booths combined with a little Frank Sinatra - Barry Manalow (ouch!) - Roberta Flack (2 out of 3 ain't bad) piped in on the ceiling speakers to add to the mood of a setting more typical of Birmingham than Livonia! My breakfast was no less amazing than the surprisingly tasteful decor. I chose the Polish omelette complete with delicious chunks of Kielbasa, sautéed onions and peppers and CHERRY WALNUT TOAST recommend by my server. It tasted so good toasted with butter, that I picked a loaf at the checkout counter to take home with me. Thomas's is one of those rare finds that you will only stumble on with the help of Yelp. Highly recommended. Fives all day long!

Friendly service, delicious comfort food, and reasonably priced. Broasted chicken, french onion soup, and the salads were all pretty excellent. Also seems like pretty authentic polish food (although this is coming from a Taiwanese guy so take that with a grain of salt).

So we've been back a few times because I would basically sell myself for the Mediterranean omelet, BUT...today I experimented with something sweet and it blew my freakin mind. The apple raisin bread French toast was SUREAL! It was a good 3 inches thick, perfect texture, had giant chunks of apple and perfect amount of cinnamon and raisins. Truly the best French toast I've ever had. Eat it.

Thomas and family really know how to run a business. From the generous portions, to the friendly and fast service and the delicious food- their chicken salad is one of my favorites, served on toasted and buttery rye bread. You can get it as a half sandwich with a side salad for $7.19. The side salad is packed full with fresh greens, home made croutons and shredded cheese. I have enjoyed all of their salad dressings. For these reasons (and of course... the pancakes), I just had to upgrade Thomas's to a well deserved 5 star rating. They even invested in custom signage when you are driving out of their parking lot that says "thank you for dining". With all of the choices in the Plymouth corridor, this really puts them at #1 - going above and beyond their competitors to show appreciation to their customers and devotion to their craft!

Great breakfast -- particularly eggs benedict. Hash browns could have been a bit better. Clean plate, friendly service and fair prices.

Service was great from hostess to waitress. Son ordered chicken tenders and they were fantastic! Real white meat nicely battered and fried - think KFC, but better Me - polish plate-- yummy. BUT. Not Hamtramck polish. I'm spoiled by the goodness of my faves in the Ham...the perogies were horrible. Teeny tiny filled with potato, but tasted like fake potato , not real mashed potato. The sausage link (skinny) was flavorful and enjoyable. Loved the kraut. The stuffed cabbage was good-flavorful. I didn't care for the mashed potatoes . This dinner came with choice of salad, coleslaw and soup. The soup was fantastic. ( cream of mushroom) loved it!!! Hubs- hamburger medium well came out rare. Like me, he won't send anything back. So, that kind of killed the burger. Iy looked like a pre- made burger patty. He had soup w it. Yummy! I liked it there. Nice family place. Not fancy nor gourmet foo-foo.

  • Jay K.

I take my parents here as it is their favorite restaurant. I am a so-so fan...the prices are not as cheap as I recall and seem to be getting higher. BUT the place is always packed and the food is good enough. I usually get the perogies and they are super tasty. There was mold on the bread today but that happens time to time? Service is always friendly however the host stand is always a bite mute? or rude? They should remember that the host is the customers first and last impression. The decor appears clean and simple but fun as well as they have two huge fish tanks that serve as dividers between tables. definitely a home-cooking spot that should satisfy a group that all wants to eat something different.

This review was actually a tough call, and I've held off making it until my third visit. I've now had breakfast, lunch, and dinner and I think I've got a good feel for the place. Thomas's is your quintessential family restaurant from times when there wasn't a Coney Island on every other corner. My first and lasting impression is that it's a very dated place. That being said, it's also immaculately neat and clean, which means a lot. Every time I've been in for a meal, the median customer age is around ~62ish, with a LOT of regulars. I struggled with the atmosphere a little. The food is just like grandma used to make. The breakfasts are good, but maybe a little pricey for what you get. The dinners I had were a little bland, but not bad (My grandma wasn't the best cook). The deserts (cakes) are spectacular and cooked from scratch daily. if you're feeling like a home cooked meal, I would give Thomas's a try, oh, and they serve alcohol as well, in case Grandpa is so inclined.

Appetizers were delicious - crispy green beans actually crispy, soups were good, entrees were mediocre (we had the chicken pot pie and the liver and onions).

Still loving this place. Old people central but an awesome choice for a freshly made, filling meal. Sign up for the e club for 20% off your first visit. You will get mails you can print out for Monday specials. Last week was a 1/2 pound burger and fries with a beer (import or domestic) of your choice for 6.99. This coming Monday is chicken paprikash over spatzle with your choice of soup, salad or slaw, a loaded bread basket on the table and a Sanders hot fudge cream puff for dessert for 9.99. They also send things for birthdays and such. This past Tuesday night my husband and I swung by for their broasted half chicken dinner with starch of choice and slaw for 6.99. Yep a huge breadbasket on the table too. We traded white for dark with each other and each ended up taking two pieces home with some of the rye bread. Steal! They run that deal every Tuesday, just ask. The salads here with ranch rock, Nathasja tells true. I also quite like all the soups. Breakfast is tasty and I like that they have so many different polish combinations. The mashed potatoes make me happy and honestly I always walk out of here with a to go box which makes it even cheaper. Service is great, refills without asking and everything is speedy. Coleslaw on the table within 30 seconds of ordering the meal. I swear we got our chicken in under five minutes. We were in and out and happily on our way. That worked. If you like good food for a good deal you will love Thomas's.

i tried this place recently and it is as good as everyone says...depending on what you get. i really enjoyed their Caesar salad, it came with the meal and it was huge! and i could tell all of the ingredients were fresh. i had the chicken parmesan, and while i was skeptical at first, it was the best i have ever tasted! the chicken was juicy and fresh, and it was covered in cheese just how i like it. i could've done without the "garlic bread" though. it was basically just toast with butter spread and a tad of garlic. my boyfriend ordered the polish plate, he said it was good but not as good as PVC of course. all in all the service was great, and my meal was delicious.

This place is your standard family restaurant except that it has beer & wine and a menu with a lot of variety. We went for my aunt & uncle's birthday dinner & surprise...birthday dinners are free & the birthday person gets a free cupcake too! The service was great, the restaurant was clean, the food was very good & abundant (almost everyone took home leftovers) and they were very busy so I have a feeling that they are a favorite of a lot of locals. I will definitely be back here in the future, they have such a versatile menu there's something for everyone. I had some Polish food, 2 people had Italian & 3 people had shrimp & they all raved about the shrimp...I don't like shrimp so I'll take their word for it!

Wow! What a difference a year makes!! After my last review- the owner, Mark, reached out to me apologizing for my service issues and inviting me back for breakfast on him to make right the challenges I had experienced during that visit. While I didn't take him up on his offer to buy me breakfast- I did have a chance to stop back in on this visit to Livonia and give it another go. First, our server, JJ was great! She made our entire visit fun and special! She greeted us with a smile, made sure our coffee cups were never empty, and the food she brought was spot on and delicious! Gotta love people who actually like what they do and it shows with JJ. I also have to do a shout out to George who was the busser. He, too, was personable and funny (two things I appreciate in the morning). He made sure our table was clean and even ran and got a pot of coffee when he noticed our cups were reaching the bottom. He even proclaimed his coffee "better" than any other! Made me laugh! There was no rushing to move us on our way (even on this busy Sunday morning) which sometimes happens at other places. There was plenty of coffee and lots of friendly service. Even my mom who was with me commented that it really couldn't get any better! Great food, friendly service and an experience that makes mom happy? Now that's my kind of place!

Went here on a Sunday morning, place was packed. We were seated very quickly and were acknowledged by the waitstaff within minutes (big kudos there). Order was taken with several changes/substitutions, order came out quickly 100% correct and hot. Everything was excellent, decor is very subdued and calming. Staff is pleasant and professional. Will be coming back after this first visit, totally impressed by this place.

My daughter and I stopped here for lunch on a recent trip to Livonia. We were seated next to one of the two large aquariums and that brought a smile to both our faces. Our server was professional, but I had the feeling that none of the wait staff was to thrilled to be there, or wanted us to be seated in their section. While waiting for a table I even joked with the hostess about "nobody wanting the tip?" Kimberly was daring and ordered the Dill Pickle Soup with her Stevie's Wonder Chicken Sandwich. LOVED the soup, so full of flavors one of those being fresh dill. The sandwich was very hard to handle and eat, but tasted good. I had the special of the day, an Oriental Chicken Salad. The salad was tasty and massive! I loved the combination of ingredients and especially the Asian Sesame Dressing. It was served with nicely toasted pita bread. We enjoyed the food. We enjoyed our seat. We just wish the staff seemed to enjoy their jobs more... maybe working on a beautiful Saturday afternoon had a little something to do with that.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner...Always good food! Nice atmosphere, good service and consistant menu. Unfortunatly their best entree of all, is only served periodically as a special...their Chicken and Dumplings are to die for!!! Best ever! If you want a really good home style meal and maybe a glass of wine...This is the place!

Always good here. Never EVER had a bad meal here. So many good things. One of my top 3 favorite burgers in town, but they have a diverse menu with so many great dishes. Very unique. If you have a little kid get him the ice cream tray dessert, you'll be delighted

I enjoy this place. The food is homemade, high-quality and tastes wonderful. The restaurant is clean & the decor is nice. The service is generally good but, like any restaurant, can have off days. I tend to get one of the daily specials, and I've never been disappointed. They serve beer and wine, but no alcohol. That said, I've never known them to have an off day with the food.

My mom and I had dinner at Thomas's tonight and it was a really pleasant experience. The place is clean, decor is nice, our waitress was friendly and prompt, and the food is very good. The side salads are larger than most and are fresh with lots of veggies. I had the broasted chicken, which was very good. Crispy, flavorful skin and juicy on the inside. My mom had the stuffed pepper, red cabbage and mashed potatoes. She said all of it was really good and she'd order it again. The portions are large and we both left stuffed and happy. I'll definitely be back.

This play has a terrific menu, very reasonable prices, plus beer and wine are available. The food is American cuisine, but they have a strong set of Polish dishes available. The breaded pork chop is absolutely outstanding. I have had other dishes, and have not been disappointed. It is kept very clean, very comfortable.

I have visited Thomas's MANY times and have never had a bad meal. Their Corned Beef Hash is the best in town. Their lunches are outstanding and their dinners are fantastic. I have had a variety of meals and believe their Polish Plate is one of my favorites. Great food at great prices.

This is a little more upscale version of a diner. We went for breakfast. The portions were good and the prices were reasonable. There were a lot of options to choose from, including some unusual combinations of fillings for omelettes. I had the cherry walnut toast with my meal, which was a nice change from the usual white or wheat toast. My omelette was loaded with cheese, and the hash browns were the standard frozen shredded potatoes. The restaurant was busy at 8:30 a.m. on a Saturday, but not too busy to get a table right when we walked in. There were several families and larger groups gathered. The waitress was friendly, and the food came quickly. I did overhear the people at the next table who did not enjoy their meals. Overall, the experience was fine, but I would not go out of my way to visit again.

I tried it after Yelping and was very pleased. My server - Melinda (i think) was very polite and gave me honest feedback about the menu. I had a Polish combo and it was tasty! 4 Stars as it was a tad pricey. $13.99 for the combo seemed high vs Polish Village Cafe or similar. I mentioned to the cashier that the pierogis were good but small and discovered they were not homemade but brought in and I could order more if they were small but pay for them. That seemed kind of off vs pleasing the customer. But it was not a differentiator for my visit. Just sharing it all. Will definitely return when in the area.

I never thought I would like Thomas. It kinda looks old-fashioned mostly geared toward an older crowd. However, I was wrong. Their food is great and so is the service. I went there on a Saturday night about 15 minutes before they closed. They greeted me like family. They didn't rush me or my mother who was with me. My waitress Nona was great. I had the whitefish with a salad and baked potato. My fish was fresh and my salad was not just lettuce and cucumbers...plus the croutons were amazing....I will definetly will all this to my restaurant rotation....

How have I lived in Livonia for 8 years and never gone to Thomas's? OK, I thought it was an old person hang out... and, don't get me wrong, it is... but now there will be a couple of middle aged people rotating regularly through too (yes, Ken and me). Very friendly staff, nice portions, comfy seating and ample parking. Large menu too, leaning decidedly toward 'home cooking'. I came wanting broasted chicken, and, per our waitress, their's was good (she said everything was good though, so I was leery). It was good!! Two breasts for around $9, with choice of soup or salad (I'm souped out so I got the garden salad with housemade ranch. Very pleased with the size and freshness of this salad, and the ranch was that great kind that isn't too sweet or too thick. Love), and a potato. Ken went with their Polish combo. $11-ish, but huge. Two homemade pierogies, a slab of smoked kielbasa (split and grilled without asking), a stuffed cabbage, mashed potatoes and homemade sauerkraut. I'm not a sauerkraut fan, but this was perfect, really cooked down with little slices of meat and bay leaves interspersed throughout - you know they have to have a just awesome Reuben. We'll go back for sure. PS they serve alcohol!

Great food, great staff, at good prices. My family and I eat here twice a week and have never been disappointed or hungry. German tomato soup is the best with the Polish plate, always a hit.

Thomas's is one of my favorite breakfast/brunch places. My husband introduced me to it when we were still just dating. It was where his grandpa used to take the family. They have good food, including several 'Michigan' specials on the menu. The fish tanks are great to zone out and watch while waiting for your food.

I would consider Thomas's Family Dining a "silent" institution of Livonia. It's been in the city as long as I have (though it's changed ownership) and it offers up some seriously good food, yet nobody ever talks about it. Step inside and you'll find out why - Thomas's is frequented almost exclusively by customers 50 years-old and up. That's not a bad thing at all, I know, but not many twentysomethings drop by this restaurant so I always feel like the odd man out when I'm there. However, with the food being this tasty I don't really mind. Pretty much everything on the menu has a fresh, homemade feel. Hell, the waitress even once proudly stated that they make their own croutons. You gotta respect that! What's good to order? Almost everything. The owners and much of the waitstaff have an Eastern European background so the menu does have a bit of an emphasis on Polish food. I've tried their pierogis before and I'm not much of a fan, but there's plenty else to choose from. A chicken sandwich, a ham sandwich, great soup, chicken dinners - I've rarely sampled something here and had it not be high quality. Special mention must be made of their salads, though. Rarely does a dinner salad seem so fresh and lovingly prepared. They come with a bounty of lettuce and a generous amount of toppings, as well as some flatbread on the side that's just great. Sure, it's not so healthy once you pour on honey mustard or caesar dressing on top of your grilled chicken salad, but your stomach doesn't know that. What are the drawbacks? It can be a bit on the pricey side, but I personally find that good-tasting food with a "homemade" and "from scratch" feel is exceedingly hard to come by in Livonia. Thomas' Family Dining may reside between both Big Boy and Senate Coney Island on Plymouth road, but it towers above them in terms of quality so you're going to pay for that. Keep in mind that they do close relatively early, though - at about 8pm or 9pm. It'd be nice if they stayed open later like Big Boy but considering the bedtimes of most of their patrons... So it's not exactly a hotspot and you may feel out of place without any gray hairs, but I'm not exaggerating when I say the food is great. Thomas's is an ideal spot for breakfast or dinner in Livonia, and as the other reviewer mentioned the fishtanks do add a certain ambiance to the place.

My wife and I go here at least a couple of times a week. This is not the family diner that it appears to be from the outside. They take care to make sure that your dining experience is second to none! In short, Thomas's is a diamond in the rough. We love the presentation of the food, it's always hot, the friendly service, the prices, and the attention to detail. We've yet to have a time where the owner hasn't personally come to our table, in order to check on our meal. They really care at Thomas's and we've told everyone that we know just how much we enjoy eating there. I would suggest trying anything on the menu because I have and I've yet to be disappointed. Thomas's is one of the best family restaurants in Metro Detroit. They should be on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives on Food Network - family joint that has the flavor, quality, and attention to detail that many 5-star restaurants lack, but claim to have.

We've been to Thomas's four times and have enjoyed a terrific meal each time. From breakfast to dinner, everything was good. That includes the service. The portions are large enough to share and they are happy to offer an extra plate. Looking forward to going back again.

Nice place.

This place is great. The perogies are amazing! Stuffed cabbage is pretty good too. And I finally tried the Italian omelette...I will never eat another omelette anywhere else.

Eat it.

I haven't been to Thomas' for anything but breakfast, with that being said I haven't been disappointed. The staff is friendly, the food is good and the restaurant is clean. Just a heads up - if you go during peak breakfast times on the weekends, you will be in for a wait! So try and get up a little early

yes, the food is very good and wait staff is also very good...But Mark has an attitude and for someone that is the owner this cannot and will not be tolerated. If he cannot be pleasant to all his customers then we will stay away. Too bad because he lost 4 very good customers.

This is my new favorite breakfast place. The food was delicious, large portions, service was excellent, and reasonable prices. Nice place.

Eat it.
