We've visited the restaurant a few times now and sampled several main dishes that are outstanding. I agree with the reviewer regarding the hostess and with booking reservations and getting it right. We do have issues with this place not having a dessert menu. Last time we were there we wanted dessert and coffee. Server directed us to go to bakery and eat upstairs. Bakery was closing and what were we supposed to do about coffee? Walk out with cups and saucers in tow. Why can't you have a short menu of 4 or 5 items and get them from the bakery. I think this aspect of the business is ridiculous.

This is a wonderful little Italian market but I won't go back there because the parking is so atrocious! Accident waiting to happen when you park there if your'e lucky enough to get a spot. A real cluster you-know-what. I'll return to Cantoros when the new place opens on Haggerty.....by the way...WHEN i is it going to open???? 11/2/13 Over 1 year later. New place still not open. Hope they get it together before Christmas. Geez.

This place is tiny, but full of italian goodies! I am really excited to see their new, much larger location open! Waiting patiently!

Stopped in here on Friday afternoon after reading lots of wonderful things. It definitely reminded me of shopping with my granny. The staff is so wonderfully nice, and called me sweetheart more times than not. They have a wide array of meats, and italian sausages, ready made dishes, and pastas. The prices are pretty good, not spectacular. The parking is rough. Very busy lot. I believe they are opening off Haggerty and 5 mile soon. I'll visit then. I picked up some gnocchi because I've been too lazy to make it myself since the age of 11 when my grandma and I would cook. It was good and leady, as any gnocchi should be. I also bought a piece of lasagna, but there were way too many converging tastes for my personal taste--onion, oregano, garlic, meat, and some other items I couldn't identify. The cheese counter is pretty good, but a trip to the Eastern Market or to Holiday Market in Canton will be just as good, and likely a bigger variety. Olive bar looked good, but by far I would say the meat and bread counters were the places to be. I'll go again, and hope for a 5. For the sweet people alone it should get a 5+.

Cantoro Italian Market is a delicious vortex of geographic displacement! It's the only place in Michigan where upon walking in, I'd swear I was suddenly back in Brooklyn...at Camereri's or Mazzola's, or that other Italian market up Henry Street with the prodigious ceiling meats. Cantoro was originally recommended to me by a friend whose Sicilian parents would make monthly pilgrimages from Chelsea. CHELSEA! Not so long ago I had another friend of mine with me (also Sicilian) who didn't think much of the place until she saw the large bottles of Brioschi, THEN she knew Cantoro was the real deal. The deli counter is...unfathomable. SO filled with yummy meats, peppers, house-made Italian sausages and salads, fresh ricotta, reasonably priced high quality parmeggiano reggiano, pine nuts...the list goes on. The bakery boasts hot, fresh homemade rolls, breads, and a cookie counter that again makes me slap my forehead (uh, am I in New York again?). I'm absolutely addicted to their pignoli cookies. I've also seen more pasta shapes than mere geometry can describe. Here's my not-so-secret post-Cantoro shopping lunch ritual: I grab one of their ciabatta rolls out of the bag, cut it, spread a thick slab of ricotta inside it, fold in a razor-thin slice of imported prosciutto, then devour. LOVE. The one downside: the parking sucks. Small lot and EVERYONE knows this market is the mambo so there's almost never a spot when you want one or there's a big jam-up as three people are waiting for one spot. I tend to go early and beat the crowds. Speaking of, it's been too long since my last visit. Hmmm...

Ã’ttimo!! Mark Twain is supposed to have said something like 'If they don't serve Italian food in Heaven', he wasn't interested in going. ....... So, go to Cantoro's for those Italian delicacies that lend meaning to your existence. Why wait for Heaven when it's right on Haggerty & 5 Mile? If I sound like a fanboy, it is because I am - been a happy Cantoro customer for almost 30 years.

We went once and it was amazing. Fabulous ready-made foods to take out or they have an area you can sit at. They also have a restaurant. They also have a gorgeous private party room. We got veal meatballs, sauce and pasta to have at home and it was delicious. If this place was closer to me I would shop there very often.

We were in town for the Christmas holidays and we heard about how great the bread and deli was at Cantoro's from out hotel concierge. I must say that this place lived up to the hype. We went on Christmas Eve and their italian breads were flying off the shelf. We picked up some dinner rolls and submarine sandwich bread. Both were really moist and tasty. We picked up some of their deli meat including mortadella, prosciutto, and salami. The meats were amazing. Just be sure to get the imported italian meats. You can also pick up some lasagna, meatballs, and squid salad. Their pasta aisle is very extensive. They also have frozen raviolis. I am glad that our hotel concierge steered us toward this amazing market. The parking lot can get tight. Be patient. It is well worth the wait.

Wow. I thought I'd swing by this past Saturday to get some supplies for an awesome antipasti dinner at home and was not disappointed. They have so many options to chose from! And their prices are.... wait for it.... OUT-STANDING. Fresh bread, desserts (cannolis!), olive bar, pasta, and an amazing deli counter. Its a small place and can be difficult to navigate on a busy Saturday and the parking lot will fill up quick. I'm not complaining. Just an observation. No worries though, you can park by Beer Baron and walk over. You really get a sense of community in this family ran joint. Even though they were busy- everyone waiting for their freshly sliced deli meats were conversing with each other, laughing, and catching up. This is one of those places where you need to go to- slow down, browse, get inspired, and appreciate it for what it is. I will return- OFTEN.

I can eat here everyday. The bread is amazing. Love this place.

Alcamo's in Dearborns' deli counter is markedly better except maybe the breads. The bread here is fresh baked and about as good as Italian bread can get. They don't carry my favorite Genoa salami (Citterio) but they do try to be accomodating. Some of the counter staff are great, some nasty. They can give you the wrong stuff so check before you leave because if they do, you'll play hell getting them to correct it. At least that was my experience once or twice. Other than those isolated incidents this is a favorite of mine. Lots of genuine Italian items, bigger selection than Alcamo's. They are building a new bigger store on Haggerty Road just north of 5 Mile Road as of December 2012. Don't know when it will open though. Soon I hope!

I moved into a house a few blocks from Cantoro's a few years ago and would buy all of my lunchmeat and bread there. I was introduced to so many wonderful Italian meats there - Capicola, imported Prosciutto, and not to mention all of the cheeses - that I unfortunately had to switch because I gained 10 pounds in a couple of months. The sandwiches I made from there were so wonderful that lunch became the best part of my day. They also sell the most wonderful home made pasta sauce that I stop in for every once in awhile. The self bake pizzas are to die for and a steal at $5.99 each. This place really has the feel of a New York Italian market. It is both a blessing and a curse for me to live so close by!

Cantoro's gotta right a review for this place, its awesome. I have been coming here for probably close to 20 years. We had off campus lunch at school and we used to walk here for the pizza bread!! :) Memories! This place has always had some of the best Italian bread you can buy! I now see that alot of upper scale grocery stores are starting to carry it. This place is your one stop for all your Italian grocery store needs. Homemade pastas, sauces, desserts tons of imports from Italy, awesome meat counter. I think the only thing that's changed with this place are the prices but that's everywhere. If your in the area this a MUST STOP, get a pizza bread and loaf of Italian bread and you'll be good to go!

This is hands down one of the best Italian bakery's in the Metro Detroit area. The service is very friendly and everything they have is premium quality. Lets start off with their sandwiches. Every deli meat they have is sliced right when you order it. Also they have an infinite cheese selection which is always a plus when topping a sandwich off. They also have some very tasty pastries and a very large array of imported olive oil's and pasta's to choose from. If your shopping for home or just stopping in on your lunch break this is the place for really fresh ingredients. Try their Italian sub and their deli meat stuffed peppers. All in all this place is great

Simply awesome bread. Worth the trip for excellent Italian, ciabatta and calabrese rounds. I have yet to get a bread in here I did not adore. Good stock of Italian deli meats and excellent cheeses. I have to love this place for the olive bar alone though. Mmmm. I am also a fan of the sausages of course, hot, fennel or mild. On the shelves you can find good pastas, orzo, coucous, polenta, roasted peppers, quality olive oils and even jam. I like the balsamic and wine vinegars I can find here. Pastries are decent here too. One stop in here and I am magically a great Italian cook. They make it easy. The people are so friendly and the goods are so good. Try it out and wow your family.

Wow! Lovely breads and desserts. Huge variety of meats and cheeses, too. And here is what shocked me...they sell CEVAPCI! Whoo hoo! It's in the freezer case near the front of the store. They also sell many Balkan meats and...and...and....are you sitting down? AJVAR!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Jarred Eggplant, Red Peppers and spices, yummmmmm!!!) Buy yourself a good loaf of bread, a hunk of cheese, and slap some Ajvar on that bread and you're good to go! Fire up the grill, and throw the cevapci on and dinner is served!

Gnomm gnomm! Walked in and was immediately brought back to the year I lived (and ate a lot!!) in Italy. They have a great selection of almost everything you could want to be contento- sauces, both boxed and stuffed frozen pasta, sweets, meats, breads, snacks..! I was so excited to see that they sell Prosciutto San Daniele (my absolute favorite!), so I picked some up and made an awesome sandwich with that, their fresh mozzarella, and fresh Italian bread for lunch! Buonissimo! My only complaint is that they had a really small flour selection (and everyone knows you need Tipo 00 to make good pizza!) and I was lucky enough to get the last bag. Also.. where's the cheese? They had mozz, but were missing a lot of some really essential Italian cheeses (stracchino? how else am I supposed to make my piadina!) and were out of the mozzarella di bufala at 9am. :/ Whatever, I'll still be showing up every week from now on and get my Italian groove on! P.S. The staff is lovely and happy to help. :)

Living 15 miles away from Cantoro's I confess I hadn't heard of them until I started working in Livonia. Then, that's ALL I heard about. People would find out I was Italian, they would ask me if I shopped at Cantoro's, then they would launch into paeans of praise for the place that were so extreme I started to think they must be exaggerating. They weren't. Probably all I need to tell you is that on my first visit there I noticed that customers and employees were speaking Italian, and that everyone looked like my relatives. My uncle Settimio was managing the deli counter. My cousin Giuseppina was at the cash register behind the tiled counter that she had to put a copy of Italian Tribune from the nearby stack down on so people could sign their credit card receipts. When I asked for a pound of hot (spicy) capicola, the cousin Mario lookalike at the meat counter asked if I wanted the baked or the boiled. Huh? How come I didn't know there were two kinds of hot capicola, I asked. He informed me that they had been carrying the baked only for a couple of weeks, but that he personally wouldn't eat anything else. It starts off sweet, he said, but then the heat builds. Would I like to sample a slice of each type, he asked. I would. A minute later he placed a little tray in front of me with two slices of the baked and four smaller slices of the boiled artfully arranged. I tasted each, and agreed with him that the baked was the best capicola I had ever tasted, all the while thinking to myself that this is how life should always be. Good wine selection, excellent cheeses, sophisticated olive bar if that's possible, all kinds of imported groceries, legendary breads and pastries. The parking is limited, especially around the holidays when it actually causes backups on Middlebelt. I consider this a plus - nothing this good should be easy to get. You should have to suffer a little in parking purgatory before you're admitted to Italian food heaven.

Very cool place...it was like stepping into some market in Italy. Some customers had Italian accents, they had Italian radio playing, and the smells were great. My first impression was, what a lot of hustle bustle and activity going on, it really requires one to check out the order of how things work. From the meat and cheese counter to the fresh bread area, I was impressed, but think it would be easy to get overwhelmed if you were not expecting it. This place is much bigger than I thought and from how it looks from the street when passing by, but small enough to still feel like a market. They had a huge wine selection, as well as pasta, sauces and other things you would expect ot see in this kind of place. I grabbed a piece of pizza bread and a small container of fresh garlic stuffed olives, and many were they good. I was surprised at how inexpensive it was at under 5 bucks, and much less ($3 less) if I had not of gotten the olives. The flavor was good and the freshness of the bread was outstanding. This was my first time here, and its easy for me to see why this place is always so packed. I recommend a visit to those passing by with a hankerin fer some Italianate.

My family and I been going to Cantoro's since I was born. As an Italian American, I've been to many different Italian markets, and this is hands down the very best place around! Currently, I live about 40 minutes away but I make it out there once a month to stock up on my Italian favorites. Nothing comes close to their Italian bread and nothing beats their selection of breads, from olive and sun dried tomato to ciabatta and multi-grain... all incredibly good! They also freeze very well, which works out well for me so I can have fresh Italian bread whenever I please. My favorite part about walking in there is the amazing fresh bread aroma you smell as soon as you get to the door. Trust me, just go, you'll be so happy you did!!

Oh quanto to amo! Cantoro Market is il migliore! The bread is perfectto! The smell of the market lures you in that you forget the parking nightmare. Yes, so I love Cantoro un incubo! I shop here at least 1 time each week for 3-4 loaves of fresh bread, cold cuts, and fresh pasta and sauce. Not a bid fan of their fresh baked pizza but their pizza dough is awesome.

I love Cantoros because of the fresh bread, the yummy pastries, and all things Italian! Walking through this place I felt as though I was back in Italy- it made me nostalgic. I loved the extensive selection of Italian cheeses- some domestic, some imported, the deli counter with the prosciutto's, the capacolas, the mortadellas. The only thing missing in this place is the cross section of a pig head on display for all to enjoy- now that would be really Italian!

Yummy, fun trip this morning to a crowded store which was a great sign! Great selection, wonderful bread, great assistance. Fennel sausage is excellent. Arancini to die for! Ricotta on the counter waiting for sugar and eggs for cheesecake. Need to get it in the oven soon because this is the most delicious ricotta and I'm tempted to eat it plain right now.

Lord, I love this store. Years ago I went to the original Gonellas. What an experience. I still remember it today. Cantoro's is that experience all over again. I went for their bread. They make probably the best Italian bread I've ever tasted. It's all baked right there and I absolutely love it. For us deigos, it's a great store. I was really surprised when I went it the first time. The smells are the kicker. Now you know you're in a great store. You can get whatever you want and it makes you feel like you've taken a trip to Italy. I make cannolli's every Christmas so I'm picky about them but Cantoro's are really good. The parking is small and there are days when all the little Italian ladies are there but it's worth it.

Love this place! Cantoro is a great place to pick some amazing imported Italian foods and some locally made Italian goods as well. The bread is amazing. I love getting the fresh pasta as well as the frozen ravioli. I will always pick up some sliced deli meat here and sometimes some fresh ricotta. The olive bar is limited but very fairly priced. I will also always get some seafood or octopus salad here. They have it about 95% of the time which I make sure to get when ever its available. Other features: decent wine selection, decent cheese selection, small bakery with bread and pastries. The only downside is that they do not take American Express and limited parking.

  • Todd R.

Best bread I've found in the area (Zingerman's is better but less convenient to get), especially the ciabatta rolls. Also a good selection of cheeses and meats that you can't find at a supermarket. Wine selection is decent, not huge but they carry some types that are hard to find. Hours can be kind of weird and parking is tight. The Westborn down the street carries some of their breads too which is convenient.
