My visit to Blue Plate last week was my first in a about 9 months. I use to have a home in Three Oaks, and would stop by all the time for breakfast. It was great to have a restaurant that understood organic & local foods back in the late 90's / early 2K's (Can't remember exactly when they opened). Although the food has always been fantastic, the service has ALWAYS sucked - especially during busy days / times. If you get there super early, you might be able to get in and out in a reasonable time. If you don't, you will be waiting a long time to even get a drink order in - and trying to get your check at the end of the meal? FORGET ABOUT IT! Most of the wait staff are kids don't have any restaurant experience, and there simply aren't enough of them on the weekends to boot. I believe the owner is one of the ladies back in the kitchen. She needs to get out on the floor more and see what's going on with these wait times for drinks and checks. The waiting for the food isn't bad if you can just get your damn order in! I think she use to have her boyfriend or husband help out in the early days - he was quite possibly the worst host ever. Here's what you guys need to do - go to Bongo Room or 11 City Diner in Chicago - see how they operate. People complain about these places sucking on weekends! At least they want to turn over tables and will get you your check! Bottom line is: Get the people's drink orders going, keep the coffee coming, and get them their check when they're done. Oh and one last thing: START TAKING CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS. This has to be the most annoying restaurant in harbor country because of this factor alone. Sorry for my rant, but I had to put in my two cents now that we have yelp.

We had a much diffrent experience then other reviewers; great service, great food, and paid with a credit card. We were seated right away and served drinks quickly. A waitress came around to refill coffee a lot (almost too much). Our food came in a resonable amount of time considering the Sunday morning crowd and hte fact is was all home made. Our food was delicious, and the French toast for the kids with thfaces on them was too cute. The kids loved it. Out waiter was always attentive and very nice. We had many people see if we neede anything else thoughout the meal. Will be back to visit this place in the future, it was a hit!

two stars for taking my order the way i wanted: egg whites only omelette with my guacamole, black beans dish. fresh squeezed grapefruit juice. amazingly strong coffee but with the sense of urgency vibe i got from the wait staff, one would think our order would have taken less time. the food is amazing! the wait, is not. in fact, the waitress took our order before the table next to us did and their order came out before ours. that is inexcusable. despite the complimentary side of pancakes we got. i'd say, if you have the time, go for it. or better yet, call ahead and order for takeout an hour beforehand, then take 30 minutes to get over there. don't forget their homemade cherry preserves they have for sale to take home!

Why do I even have to give it one star? I have never been so grossed out by dining experience as I was a Blue Plate. First, we put our name in with the guy who said the wait was 15 minutes, which ended up to be 35 minutes. This is rather unfortunately for BP as it gave me plenty of time to observe the nasty, dirty habits of the people working there!!!!!! First, I ordered a piece of zuchini bread and coffee cake to eat while we waited. Besides the fact that neither one of them were good, the lady who served it to us had DIRT under her fingernails. And no gloves to handle the food. The kitchen is completely open here, which gives you the ability to observe the following: #1, I didn't see a single employee wash there hands while touching money, dirty dishes or picking up stuff off of the floor. #2, a bunch of teenagers cooking your meal. Really? Here was the other thing that grossed me out - A lady was counting out the money box/drawer for about 15 minutes, tabulating, adding, whatever. She then proceeds to pick up 3 drinks by the mouth of the glasses and serve them to a table. WTH? The problem was, I was so freaking hungry that I was really trying not to notice all of these disgusting practices. All that being said, we finally were seated outside where they have a serious fly problem. They were everywhere! Service was slow and terrible and my food came out, I took one bite and stopped as it was COMPLETELY INEDIBLE. My eggs were grimy and gritty. How do you mess up eggs? Maybe by having a bunch of teenagers prepare them. The whole experience was dreadful. The only reason this place gets any business is because there aren't many other breakfast places in town. Disgusting!

This place seemed like it has potential to be much better than what I experienced. Reflecting on some of the negative aspects of the place from the hours of operation (ie: not opening until 8am on a Sat) to the cleanliness (well described by fellow Yelpers), energy of employees (surprised they were even standing), and execution of dishes (very disappointing) I get the impression that this once was a great place but over the years the owner(s) and staff have become bored. So instead of being a unique drive-out of your way breakfast destination it is merely an over priced Denny's with a slightly creative menu. In hopes of an improved experience during my next visit I will offer you these 5 ideas: 1.) Get rid of that damn cheapo hot chocolate/cappuccino machine and invest in a small espresso machine. Put said new machine on the counter by the door so you can easily sell to coffee, lattes, etc to-go style as well as for seated patrons. I guarantee the machine will pay for itself in just a couple summer weekends. 2.) Related to #1-buy some french press pots and offer press-your own coffee...heck, you could go a step further and buy a nice grinder and offer grind your own too. Just have a large selection of fresh beans available to choose from. 3.) Open earlier. 6am, no later. If you want to be known for breakfast be open for standard breakfast hours (6am-11am). I know you're not out partying at some crazy New Buffalo club every night so there is no reason you can't set that alarm a bit earlier. 4.) Make some menu changes. The breakfast menu needs at least 5 more 'hot' options. Also, try to mix it up w seasonal dishes or heck, even a Sunday brunch buffet in the summer (would help you get people in/out the door faster). 5.) Branding...do some. You are in a vacation town, there is no reason why you can't make a real logo (that one you have printed on shirts now is horrendous) and start slapping it on everything from clothing to baked goods, coffee mugs, and even *gasp* blue plates. 6.) *Bonus-Close off your kitchen from the main waiting/dining area. There is a reason why most restaurants, don't have their kitchen open to the entire dining area.

We went for breakfast this past Sunday, around 10:00AM. The service was terrible. Having read the other reviews, I expected this going in. Unfortunately things did not improve with the food. I ordered the full monty, which consists of 3 eggs, bacon, sausage, toast and a pancake. I asked for my eggs over easy. They were what I would call about 5 minutes past over easy... as in, had the cook taken them off 5 minutes earlier they might have passed for over easy. They weren't runny, not even congealed, but cake-like yolks. I had asked for white toast and the waitress said OK (I will admit white toast is not on the menu.. Why? Don't ask me.. Guess it's not hip or organic enough). So I was at least looking forward to some toast, but I got "multi-grain". Asked again for white toast, and this time they said they just didn't have it. Soo.. On to the sausage! Maybe I can dig into some nice sausage patties or links..?! Haha.. Wrong again! What they gave me was "chicken" sausage, which looked like a shrunken and bastardized version of a chicken breast. I didn't bother to touch it. The single pancake by this time was cold, leaving me with my two meager strips of bacon. Which were not even close to crispy, but at least the flavor was there. There are plenty of neat little brunch places in Harbor Country, this isn't one of them. Save your time and cash (not credit cards!)

Excellent breakfast. Had the Paris scramble. Even the toast was excellent. The deserts looked incredible and they tease you as you walk in. Enough for me to ask what's the favorite. Waitress recommended the peach crisp which was served with Home made whipped cream. Friendly service add to the charm here. Location on busy road and not so great coffee are the reasons for 4 stars

5 stars for the food and our server. 0 for Stephanie in the back. Let's talk about Stephanie. I cannot believe what just happened while I was dining there! I have been dining here for MANY years and order the same dish every time. My mother, brother and I just had breakfast. My mom and I ordered very similar dishes. I got the Full Monty (very good) but realized it was missing bacon. I told my server and she told Stephanie (the blonde in the back). At this point Stephanie LOST IT. She started SCREAMING (not speaking loudly) that she put bacon on the plate and that I was a liar. She was not only disrespecting myself but also the poor woman who was serving us. She would not stop, even when the server asked her to please calm down and cook 2 pieces of bacon. My mom even went up there to let her know that our server was not lying. I felt so unbelievably bad for our server and was insulted that Stephanie was calling me a liar over 2 pieces of bacon! Eventually Stephanie finally did her job and cooked the 2 pieces of bacon. Good job Stephanie. Turns out, after we got the check, we realized that my moms and my dish were switched. Nonetheless, the way Stephanie reacted to the honest mistake was incredibly rude and unlike anything I have ever seen. I have been a manager in the service industry and she would have been fired on the spot and asked to never return. Too bad the owner was not there. Stephanie owes myself and our server an apology. Respect your elders and your customers Stephanie. Please take this as a learning opportunity to do better next time or get the help you may need. Sincerely, Bacon Liar

Relax. You'll Get Your Food. 4 stars for food, 3 stars for service This is a very nice cafe, but very slow service. However, once you get your food you'll be glad you waited. We've been here several times for breakfast and have never been disappointed in the food once it arrives. Go for the chicken sausage because it is fabulous. They have their own delicious version of huevos rancheros that I especially like. The sweets that you can take with you are also good, so if you can't wait, come in and grab something to go. Cost per person for breakfast is about $15.

I have been coming off and on for years to the blue plate. The food has always drawn us back. The service is always bad and we accept it. The menu has changed very much. Its is much smaller. We probably haven't been there in about 2 years but stopped in recently. Our server was nice but her clothes were dirty. Not appealing to be served by someone who isn't clean. We had eaten the morning before at Jackie's in New Buffalo and this is where we typically go for our breakfast and lunch meals in the last year. Jackie's is far better. I really want to like you Blue Plate but I think I'm finally done.

Really disappointing experience for breakfast. Out party of six arrived around 10:30am and there were several tables available so it appeared to be not super busy. Wrong. Our waitress didn't acknowledge us for at least 10 minutes. There was another women working there that was rolling up silverware and not paying attention to guests. Once we ordered it took another 15 minutes to get our food. Three of the meals were served and in another 5 minutes 2 more were served. The final meal was yet another 5 minutes. Everyone was finished eating by the time he got his meal. On top of that, one of us never received our drink order so we asked them to remove it from the bill - they never did. So unfortunately that came out of the waitresses tip. Food was actually pretty decent. Too bad the service was awful.

Can't recommend, have to agree with the masses. 2.5 stars overall but nothing was tasty enough to warrant rounding up. Even the free pastry samples were dry and tasteless. We remembered liking this place 2 or 3 years ago, but ... times change. Coffee (too weak), 2.5 stars Eggs over easy (barely warm), 2.5 stars Scrambled eggs, 3 stars Home fries (SO MUCH rosemary), 1 star Tomatoes (cooked but cold, weird), 1.5 stars Kids French toast, 3 stars Bacon, 3.5 stars Cinnamon toast (a bit dry), 2.5 stars Toddler factor: Several menu options, enough room for high chair. Perfect-sized kids cup. Lots of fun colors inside that interested the little one. Food came out relatively quickly from kids menu.

I was with a group of 10 ladies for a girls weekend and called ahead on Sunday morning for a reservation at 11am and got one! We thought the menu looked a little small but it was super close to the house we rented so we took a chance (given all the recent one stars from six months ago...). We got there and a gentleman was super helpful getting us seated and our waitress was a very nice older later who got our coffees and waters within the first few minutes. Menu wise, it's small, but as mom and pop shop we were happy with most everything. The standout at the table were the potatoes (rosemary, sweet potatoes, and Yukon), buttermilk pancakes (best I've had - EVER), sourdough bread, special frittata, and the French toast. The jam is also outstanding. Good feedback from the BLT with egg and avacado but I didn't partake. Price wise, there was something for everyone in our group, from a $7 sandwich to $10 Full Monty plate of goodness. Coffee was standard but the smoothie was awesome. One the fence was the chicken sausage (less breakfasty and more like a burger). At the end, the host or manager helped us split out bill 10 ways and got us sorted out (gave us some to go cups for unfinished smoothies) and it came to $12 bucks a person before tip - great deal. After seeing lots of comments about the service, I'd advise taking those with a grain of salt. I do think that our waitress was great with our group of ten and juggling all of our orders and requests. There were a few things off with the order (one omelette came with the wrong bread, my full Monty came out a few minutes after everyone else god their food) but that's nothing irreconcilable in my mind. Also, from what we can tell it's a small kitchen so ten orders all at once is usually not easy. To be fair, one of the runners was a bit stressed bringing out of the food, but they are a runner not a server so it wasn't a big deal in my mind. 4 starts for awesome food, good prices, and helpful staff. Docking one for the combined chicken sausage, runner, and missteps on the order. Will definitely go back when we come back to Union Pier.

We went here the day after our wedding and it was delicious. Very cute place. I got the chillaquilles verdes and it was delicious. The salsa was very fresh and had a lot of good flavor. The smoothie/juice of the day was so good too, again very fresh with berries and all. The pastries/deserts looked great and I wish I would have gotten some of that to go!

My family and I were excited to return to the blue plate cafe after loving it the previous year! Unfortunately we were very disappointed this time and will not be returning. The pancakes were inedible! When we told our waitress the pancakes were not good she admitted that an ingredient was left out of the batter but served them and charged us anyway. She did reluctantly remove one plate of pancakes from our bill but charged for the other two. She was very rude and defensive and in my opinion one of the worst examples of customer service I have ever experienced. I give one star for the coffee only...everything else was terribly disappointing!

I've been coming here for years. At the time I'm writing this there are only 3 stars. What?!! Love, love to come here for breakfast. It can get pretty crowded so I try to come early to avoid the crowds. I bring my summer guests here and no one has been disappointed. It's a special gem right off the highway. Don't know what to recommend as I've tried a variety. Just depends on what strikes your fancy. Food hasn't been fantastic every time, just most of the time. When I'm staying in the area, it's definitely a place I include in my plans. It's also a nice place to go by yourself. Sometimes quiet, but it's also a family place so can get pretty loud.

I've been visiting Blue Plate for years. What can I say, this last visit was less than stellar. I have obsessed over their blueberry crumble coffeecake and Chilaquiles. Showed up for breakfast (this season) only to find their menu has changed! Quite limited in both breakfast and lunch selections. NO Chilaquiles, Huevos Rancheros, and all the other yummy things they used to offer. They typically give you a little dish with some yummy bakery samples. Ours had some sort of cobbler and a part of a rice krispy treat on it. Felt like we were being served scraps from the bakery. I had the Greek Burrito, not bad, but served with no sides, no salsa, nothing. Just plain weird. My friend got some mexican egg dish that came with a green salsa, we were disappointed to find out the salsa verde was sweet for some reason, just did not blend well with the dish. Paying $3 for a cup of mediocre Mexican coffee seems a bit ridiculous in these parts. I am happy to support mom and pop shops and there are not a ton of options in this area. Sadly, I will be moving along Red Arrow Highway and looking for other options next time I'm visiting that area.

The worst $10.00 omelette I've ever had! Would it kill your business to put some potatoes or fruit on the plate? The limited menu was a joke. Our server was nice, but really dirty.

We came here on June 14, 2015 at 11am for some breakfast on our last morning in Lakeside. The food was average (I had the bacon benny) and although good, it wasn't anything to write home about. The service, however, really lets this place down and is the main reason for the 2 star review. After we walked in, the wait staff and front of house continued serving for approximately 5 minutes without acknowledging our fairly large party to even say hello. Once I flagged someone down, she was incredibly rude and practically barked at us for wanting to put our name down. When we finally got to the table 20 min later, one person in our party asked for the Mexican benny to be made without chorizo, as he is a vegetarian. Our waitress promptly told us there were no substitutions allowed, even though there were only a handful of veggie options available. It was only after we said we'd leave that the kitchen staff said they'd make the substitution. All in all, the terrible service and unfriendly, unwelcoming environment really lets this place down, and we will certainly not be returning.

We've gone here for years and the food and service have always been great. Yesterday, however, we tried to go for breakfast and apparently they were short-staffed, and a few other families were waiting for tables---very patiently---along with us. First, The hostess/server and possibly manager was incredibly rude and basically yelled at everyone waiting to get out of the way bc they were blocking the route to the kitchen. Then she later barked that she wouldn't be able to seat anyone bc they were short staffed...although there were many empty tables, because of the staff shortage they couldn't even get food out. I get that, but the way she spoke to everyone waiting was ridiculous. Many people left after that. I'm sad to say that after eating there every summer for 10 + years, we will not go there again. Clearly they don't care about good customer service.

I ordered breakfast here on Saturday with a group of friends. Food: I ordered the full monty (1 pancake, bacon, sausage, 2 eggs, toast, potatoes). Everything was great. One of the best pancakes I've had at a restaurant. The toast was awesome, which says a lot considering it's just toast. The chicken sausage was really good. The bacon was good. I'm not a huge egg fan, but they were pretty good too. The potatoes were great. They also have a bakery inside with a bunch of appetizing baked goods. I ordered a piece of carrot cake, which was really good. Some friends ordered some other items. My girlfriend got the blueberry cobbler - really good. I wanted to try one of the huge mixed berry muffins but knew I had plenty of other things to eat for the weekend and decided to save my money. Service: This is the only reason I'm giving it 4 stars. The service was a little off in terms of the way the employees speak to customers. Everything was served very timely though. We got there early enough to beat the rush, so that likely helped. I'd go back here again if I was in the area. The waitress also came by regularly to fill up coffee, got us the bill timely, and provided condiments (ketchup, hot sauce, etc) as soon as our food came out. The outdoor seating was also a plus for a Saturday, cloudless 70 degree morning.

I drove to Union Pier from Chicago like always on my birthday. I always go to Blue Plate since I bring my dog with me. Was I surprised when I let him out of the car and a waitress came out and shouted to me that the patio was closed per the owner since the heat index was too high and went back in the door leaving me standing there aghast with my dog. I was dumbfounded since I never heard of such a thing. Don't adults have the right to make up their minds about what is best? We would be sitting in the shade drinking cold water. So we went to Luisa ' s Cafe and sat outside on their picnic table. BTW a cold front came thru and the temperature dropped about 15 degrees.

I've been here a number of times now, and reliably enjoy the food. The building and decor are quirky and cute. Each time I come here, I bring different out-of-town guests, and they always leave feeling like they somehow have experienced a true local experience. I have always enjoyed the food - most recently the beet / kale salad, which was phenomenal, along with the decadent carrot cake for dessert. My only complaint is that even though I have never come at a super busy time, the wait staff generally seems overwhelmed and scattered. There seems to be a lack of leadership or structure. On more than one occasion, I have felt that there was some sort of spat going on between the wait staff - lots of eye rolling and hard stares. This generally seems to be the level of service to the point that I actually tell my guests before we are seated that the food is really good, but the service is laughable - it has become sort of a game we play to figure out who's mad at whom. Imagine my surprise a few weekends ago when we were waited on by a young lady who was pleasant and knew the menu well, was quick on her feet and engaged in what she was doing. She got a *really* nice tip.

Not sure what all the buzz is about regarding this place. My husband and I stopped in for breakfast on a Monday morning and they were really busy. I didn't appreciate the food or service myself. We were surprised to see one middle aged man working and several younger servers. Not that age means anything, but the service was terrible! They dropped off our food and ran off before we could ask for jam or drink refills. Two or three different servers came to our table, we only saw our server once. Maybe they need to retrain them?? Anyway, the omelet with crusted cheese was nothing special. I ordered sweet potato fries and a mexican verde dish. Gross!!! The presentation was just awful and what you see is what you get because the taste was just as bad. The sweet potato fries were not fries, just a pile of mush with dried herbs sprinkled on top. Our coffee cups were kid size and they never came by to refill our cups. We will never go back!!! Take it from us, it's not worth stopping in. Keep driving down red arrow hwy towards Luisa's Cafe and Swedish bakery. Yum yum!

We had a really good breakfast here last week, my friend and I. We each drank gallons of coffee. I had freshly-squeezed orange juice. I had a frittata, and my friend went with basic scrambled eggs with toast and sausage. Excellent food, service, and good prices. What more do you want? Well, actually, there is one thing. We went back the next day because my friend wanted to get another scone. The woman who was supposedly running the register and selling the baked goods was impatient, short, and made it pretty darn clear that we were interrupting what she was doing. Dear Owners, if you don't want customers stopping by to purchase baked goods outside of buying a meal, do not display baked goods as if they are for sale! Otherwise, a very good experience. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Great food, terrible service. We keep trying to go and keep walking out. No organization, extremely loud and obnoxious waitress, empty tables, full waiting area. The staff looks listless and lost. Sorry, we've loved this place for years, but we've had enough.

Was a little put off by the recent poor reviews of this place. We'd originally planned to go to Luisa's down the road. But, they were closed, so we came back here. It looks so-so on the outside, but inside things were very cute & nice & clean. A pleasant cloud of maple syrup and waffles hit me as soon as we walked in, and I was hungry enough to start gnawing on a table. We were seated immediately and served water & coffee shortly thereafter. We ordered a lot of food - on vacation, hungry, and we felt like pigging out. I got the Full Monty breakfast, my wife got the Ojai Omelet, and we also ordered a special - a johnnycake corn meal & chile waffle with honey butter. Everything was cooked perfectly, and was quite tasty. The corn waffle was interesting, a nice mix of sweet and savory, and just the right amount of crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. My breakfast came with a buttermilk pancake, which was also cooked just right and had a nice amount of tart from the buttermilk. My sunny-side-up eggs were great. Maple syrup tasted fresh, from little pitchers rather than single-service plastic as we'd had a breakfast the day before at another place. Really just everything was exactly what we wanted for a big indulgent breakfast. Service was fast & friendly. There was a tiny bit of mix-up in orders, but that was solved fast and without any complaint. The only down point was when what appeared to be a whole daycare group came in and started having a tantrum contest - but they were on the other side of the restaurant, and I don't think there was much the staff could do.

The BEST. We vacation in Lakeside and come back year after year. Blue Plate is one of the reasons we love this area, and we eat there close to every day. Breakfasts are outstanding, and available until closing (@3:00). Lunch is delicious as well. Must-have: "granny bars" from the bakery (totally worth the calories!), whole-grain pancakes with blueberries, fresh-squeezed OJ and lemonade (really, really fresh!), smoothies & shakes, "The Americana," "Baja Breakfast Burrito." Skip: the "homemade cereal" (unless you are seriously into health food, this is not granola).

I stop when I'm not in a rush, and today was a great day to stop. Got a basic plate, very tasty. The only surprise today was that I didn't get a coffee refill. However, I could tell the teens were hustling to keep service going to the three big groups that came in before and after I did. Get some cookies to go, too. Definitely worth it!

We showed up after the morning rush and received great food and service. Based on the other reviews, it sounds like the place falls apart when it gets busy. I would for sure recommend stopping by this place if it isn't crowded. We went on 6/29/2014.

I'm really surprised by the negativity here- Blue Plate is awesome. We come in every time we visit and have always had a delicious meal and great service. Just today we brought our kids for their first breakfast here- twin 3 year olds and a baby. Our waitress was immediately on top of grabbing coffee for my husband and me. She also put the kids' pancake order in right away while the adults perused our options. All the food came out quickly. If you've never had the cherry jam here- it's reason enough to stop in- UNBELIEVABLY tasty! You can also take jars of it home, we always stock up when we visit. Finally, at the end of our meal when I asked for one more top off of coffee our waitress brought us coffee to go! So totally delicious food and brilliant service, can't wait to stop in again.

Went there last weekend with my daughter. Colors on exterior are very inviting. Inside was a mix. Our host gave us a sample plate of baked goods once seated. Nice touch if they were all great, but no. 2 of 5 were moist, other 3 were dry as could be. And what the heck is with the chicken sausage? It's a brick-like hunk of badly seasoned chicken breast. It was awful. Why would that be one of your "specialties?" Get some regular breakfast sausage please! Our waitress was young girl. Her words were welcoming and attentive but she never smiled the entire time. A bus boy took plates occasionally which was great, but he never made eye contact when he spoke. Service with a smile people! It ain't that hard! Will not return.

Nice little place, very friendly staff. Had great coffee and good food. The eggs weren't as spicy as I like them but over all it was a good little breakfast place. Very reasonable prices as well. The owner met us at the door and gave us a free sample from the bakery.

First Coffee cup was dirty, I asked for replace and I got another where something sticky was inside. Ordered eggs with mushrooms, and mushrooms were old (almost black and they smell like old) This is not the end the toasted bread had something like mold on a side, I smell it and it was mold spot. I will never go there again.

Luckly we were not in any rush at all, because everything took for ever. The waitress took for ever to get our drinks and just water. The food was good, but it took for ever, same with the check. Good location, but only good if you have the rest of the day off.

One of the worst meals I've ever had. I ordered the "black bean" burger which comes with a frothy tomatillo sauce, guacamole (with a nice layer of brown on top, when I asked for a fresh one, the waitress returned with it in a bowl and informed me it only needed to be stirred) and that's it. I asked for cheese and she said no. Literally said no. It also comes with no sides and since a side salad was impossible to order (truly) I got a scoop of rancid cole slaw for $2.50. She was really proud of that awful burger - said it was her favorite thing on the menu. I felt bad and didn't even send it back. It just felt like a hopeless, clueless situation. AVOID.

Own a house down the road and used to enjoy eating at Blue Plate nearly every time we came out. Man has this place gone down hill. The food has gone from great to good to bland to gross. It feels like they've just given up. And it seems others feel the same as crowds have thinned considerably over the past few years.

Went there on a sunday morning for brunch, and who knew that it would take over 1 hour to receive pancakes and waffles? The kitchen is severely under trained and highly inefficient. The Fresh squeezed OJ for $3.95 tasted like it was from the grocery store with a little pulp mixed in to make it look like it was fresh squeezed, it also tasted like grapefruit, it was very tart. I ordered the enchiladas verdes which was pretty good, but keep in mind I waited over a hour to receive it, so at that point anything was probably going to be good.

I love Blue Plate. When you walk in the door, there is an array of baked goods on the counter to tempt you and they are all made there. When you sit down, a small plate of some of these cubed are brought to your table to tide you over until your meal comes. The service is excellent. The people in the kitchen look young but according to our waitress, the cook has worked there 7 years, trained by the owner. It's a large opeh room and when a bunch of kids come in, you can hear the chatter above anything else. The music is low enough to enjoy conversation. The menu is pretty good, not a lot of things, but certainly not 4 things on it. Today we had a lemon-ricotta waffle with blueberry compote and scrambled eggs with a wonderful bready rye toast and honest to goodness home fries. The jam appears to be homemade as well. The service is with a smile and quite efficient. I have made substitutions before on my dishes as I am picky. Cups and plates always look clean to me. The black bean burger I had for one lunch was a little mushy, but they all are like that unless you buy a Morningstar burger and flip it on the grill. The restaurant is brightly colored and clean.

I usually come here once a summer while in town. The have great baked goods and breakfast. I usually get the Migas(or chillaquiles). Wife had a bit overcooked Fritatta today. Service is friendly but slow at times(even while not busy).

Stopped in for a late breakfast over the holidays. The menu offered a nice variety of great sounding options and the service was decent as the place was nearly empty. Our waitress was attentive if less than professional, commenting on a private phone conversation among other things. The food came and it looked great. However, the ketchup was served in a plastic squirt bottle so you could see it all clearly. Does anyone in food service not recognize fermentation in progress? Bubbles in the ketchup is an obvious sign of soured product, and when I pointed this out, the guy assisting our waitress simply took the ketchup away, no apologies, no explanation, nothing. The waitress was friendly but loud, actually hollering across the dining room to ask us if we needed more coffee, explaining that since we were the only people in there, she didn't want to walk all the way over (20 feet or so) if we didn't need a refill. The guy with the ketchup came and asked us to leave -- we hadn't even been there an hour but were finished with our meal -- so he could seat a party of 11 along the wall where we were seated. As if all the empty tables in the middle of the dining room didn't exist! Travel the extra 5 miles north or south and find someplace else if you need more than a bakery.

Hmm. On one hand it was a delightful experience. The wait staff was very friendly and the decor is bright and fun. On the other hand the pancakes were over cooked, heavy and had spent a bit of time under a heat lamp. And the eggs were cold. Plus no one removed our dirty dishes once we'd finished eating. Would we go there again? Sure. The menu has some potentially tasty offerings so we'd give it a second shot.

I really enjoyed the food here, but as previously mentioned, the service is incredibly slow. Because you should be relaxed while you are in Harbor County - taking it slower, if you will - I did not dock them any stars for this. I had this amazing Italian Frittata - I would have never guessed to put fresh mozzarella with eggs, but it was truly heaven. I really recommend this specialty dish if you stop by. The coffee is excellent here, as is the fresh juice. Take your time and savor each sip!

It's hard to miss this place as you go by, with it's bright, multi colored paint job (that is the same inside and out). I went for breakfast on a Sunday, and it's a great, family-owned and operated breakfast place and bakery. Everything is made fresh, from the juice, to the bread, to jam on the bread, and it all tastes super fresh. Upon entering, the open kitchen and bakery are on the left, with all of the fresh-out-of-the-oven baked goods proudly on display. All of the food is great and the portions are big and the service is fast and friendly. Blue Plate obviously care about the details. They care about their customers. They care about their ingredients, and the teamwork of the people there shows that they care about Blue Plate a lot too. A super place for breakfast or lunch. I can't wait to go back.

Stooped here for brunch/lunch over the weekend, after saying we were going to try it for the past three years. We got there at the end of the day (it was 3 PM) and even though they were technically closed, it was raining so hard, they took pity on us and said sure they would serve us. We sat down and after a few minutes our waitress came over to take our order. Hot chocolate was ok, although I feel since they are a cafe, they shouldn't use a machine similar to 7-elevens...;o). On to the food, my eggs with the pesto, fresh tomatoes, and mozzarella was awesome! The country toast was ok, although I was hoping for some thick multi-grain which I adore! My honey had a panini sandwich which he really enjoyed...turkey bbq with slaw. Totally full, we ordered two pieces of crumb cake (blueberry and cinnamon) to go, for a snack when we got home later that afternoon. Unfortunately, the damn dog devoured the entire 2 pieces when we were outside for five minutes. All that she left was the paper bag, and the dream that was crumb cake...;o). We are retuning to the area in the end of June, and I will get a piece of that crumb cake.....LOL!

One of the best breakfasts I've ever had in all my years! I as skeptical about this place, because of the name. I thought to myself, "Blue Plate?= Greasy spoon name." Upon walking in, there is a hardworking, cheery staff diligently baking and cooking right in the open. The walls were covered painted with bright orange and yellow hues. The coffee was aromatic magic and although our food wasn't served on a blue plate, it was pretty special, 'cause I drove back a week later. They had black beans and fresh tomatillo sauce for my breakfast burrito! I had to order a multigrain chocolate chip pancake to accompany the coffee too.. which was exceptional. Also noteworthy, it took me a good ten minutes to choose one thing from all the selection. I'm normally ready to roll with bfast. The service was excellent. If I could find a place like this anywhere I traveled.. life would be better and i'd be fat. *_*

Last year we had the perfect breakfast. This year it all seemed off. The food was great but slow especially since there were two other tables. I had a problem with the hostess and waitress wearing cut off blue jeans with holes and were very short. The cook would come out of the kitchen and tell the waitress dirty jokes he was hearing in the back. I wish the cookies and muffins for sale in the front had a covering as people would walk by and cough...

This place is not even trying. I ordered the tuna sandwich. It was basically a can of tuna dumped on bread with 2 sprouts on top. I requested additional sprouts and received a few more. There was no mayo, no salt, no flavor, nothing. And that for 8 bucks (a lot in Union Pier). No fries either. On my worst day in the kitchen, I can make a better tuna salad sandwich than that. Don't waste your money. Worst of all, I left still hungry.

I saw a lot of low marks here for Blue Plate Cafe and for the life of me I dont know why. We had a lovely lunch at BPC upon arrival to Lakeside. They do a great job of accomodating dogs outside on their patio. The staff were very friendly and the menu looked divine. I will say I think the lunch couldve come out a bit quicker and some of the other comments here noted slow service so maybe there is something there. But the quality of our lunches were just fantastic. We ordered the brat burger with carmelized onions which was novel tasty and of great quality. We also had a kale salad which was lovely. Of course we took advantage of those amazing pastries and again...two thumbs up!!! Really suggest you give the a shot, we had a lovely meal.

My wife and I have been coming here at least for the last 6 years and always loved it until now. We stayed in New Buffalo last Saturday and when we got up that Sunday morning, we had our hearts set on the Blue Plate Diner. I couldn't wait to order "The Full Monty." When we were seated, the waitress placed these, what looked to be a note or the list of specials. Turned out, that was the menu. As I'm reading the menu I'm thinking, where's the breakfast portion, but that was it. I asked my wife if she wanted to leave, but we figured we would try it. I had the Bacon and Egg Torta and my wife had the Stuffed French Toast with Chicken sausage. Well the Bacon and Egg Torta was less than appetizing and the Stuffed French Toast was pretty good but if your calorie counting, the carbs and maple syrup will kill your numbers for the day. A lot of the scuttlebutt amongst the other patrons around us was the menu. Most was on the disenchanted side except for one gentleman who claimed to be in the food business thought the change was brilliant. He ordered the Bacon Egg and Cheese sandwich off the children's menu....sounds a little hypocritical to me. We both agreed that we need to find a new breakfast place when visiting. We'll keep an eye on the menu, if something changes we may be back then. The food only deserves one star but we do like the quaint atmosphere.

Not good. The Rome "scramble" was possibly the worst sit down breakfast I've ever had. An almost completely flavorless combination of wet, runny eggs, un-melted mozzarella, heinously bitter (rancid?) red peppers & soggy arugula, with rock hard un-ripened tomatoes floating elsewhere on the plate. Luckily the side of dry, overcooked chicken sausage/rawhide with hamfisted amounts of rosemary distracted me from my taste-free abyss. Two stars because the fresh-squeezed orange juice was really good.
