This is a cute, authentic restaurant with lots of tables for couples or groups. There are 2 tvs-- one plays the food network (at least that what's on every time we stop in) and the other plays an Asian channel. Their Vietnamese iced coffee is amazing!!! I've had it many times, in fact we served it at a restaurant that I used to work at, and this one is spot on! My husband ordered one, but had no idea what to do so......the hot coffee is served in a pour-over type metal coffee press that holds the coffee grounds; hot water is poured into it and very slowly drips through the metal filter. You want it to drip slowly so that the coffee becomes concentrated. Once the water has dripped through, remove the coffee press and stir the coffee that has dripped on top of the sweetened condensed milk in the cup. Then pour it over the cup of ice they give you! Voila! YUM! As for the food, the first time that we went here, we ordered the pho with raw and well cooked beef brisket. I literally couldn't chew the cooked beef because it had the texture of rubber and was very fatty. So now we order the basic (raw) beef pho......it's very tasty and is served with the traditional slices of jalapeno, bean sprouts, limes slices, thai basil, and a green called baby sherlihon (cai xanh). The broth is good, but not the best I've had. We went once right before they closed, and the broth was kind of bland, so I suggest going during normal lunch/dinner times! The spring rolls are great too! The are not fried and filled with pork, shrimp, cilantro, bean sprouts, noodles, etc. I do have to say that I don't really understand all the food that sits out on the tables. I'm assuming it's pre-made desserts, etc that you can buy to eat there or take home. However, my food safety side says that some of the items should be stored in the fridge!!

Very nice authentic place. Great service, food was authentic ! I will definitely come back here during my stay here in Grand Rapids - I am a little Pho obsessed though!

This is the first time and probably the last time I will get food there. Their flavor isn't bad but for the same price I can get a better quality and more food at Golden 28 on 28th St. The quality and quantity of meat in the pho is half of what I would get from Golden 28. The pork chop is 1/3 size for the same price. I ordered pho special and the pork chop meal to go. It was in the afternoon and with 2 tables to serve, I still waited 15 mins. While I was waiting the customers had to walk to the kitchen constantly to get some service. So, unless the other Vietnamese restaurants are closed I won't be going there in the future.

I am a pho lover. When I first tried soc trang I literally hated it. Their pho was just terrible. But being so close to home and the only place open on Mondays I found my self there a few more times. I never liked it once until i tried their seafood clear noodle soup. I would give the dish 5 stars on its own. Also their egg rolls are best I've ever had.

Fuh not Foh Fuh not Foh Fuh not Foh I repeated this to myself as I walked in. I didn't want to give it away that I'm still a Pho novice. I've had a few bowls, all in other cities, but (embarrassingly) none in Grand Rapids. Until now. And I didn't want them to kick me out for saying it wrong. Pho is sort-of, kind-of similar to Ramon Noodles. But a lot better. It's typically a beef broth with chicken or beef and lots of veggies and rice noodles. Sitting down in the clean albeit, busy dining room, we were approached right away about ordering. Eyeing the massive spring rolls, I ordered that to start with and we ordered our bowls. The spring rolls were so much better than expected, stuffed with shrimp. They arrived with great dipping sauces. The bowls were massive - literally the size of my head- and were so yummy! We used our chopsticks to gather up the noodles and veggies and slurped away. Even my picky eating stepdaughter loved her order. The restaurant is very family friendly with a mom and pop feel at this authentic spot. Only thing to be mindful of when visiting is the parking lot situation. It's a disaster, especially in winter. Cars parked every which way, no room to turn around, bad parking jobs. They share a parking lot with an attached market which may explain the high traffic. Still, it required zen-like patience to find a spot.

This is the original one of three family owned Vietnamese restaurants. The family opened a second location in Gaines Twp that has since closed. The third restaurant is located close by in Kentwood, possibly due to a family feud. See my other review for pho. My favorite item here is their Soc Trang eggrolls for an app. For the noodles, I really like combining their version of curry chicken with the pho noodles. On certain days, they feature Bahn Xeo - a take on a crepe with shrimp and bean sprouts.

We are from Chicago and we are used to the yummy Vietnamese good on Argyle. However, we are impressed with the food here. The #1 spring roll is yummy with garlic and taro! The pho broth is authentic and well portioned. We also got #12 - a seafood and meat pan fried noodle dish- really yummy! We would definitely come back!

My absolute favorite pho in GR. I've only ever had number 10, but what my friends have had has been phenomenal as well. The portions are ginormous, the ingredients are fresh, and the broth is to die for. I always leave stuffed to the gills. I've gone so many times now that the lady who is always working waitress/cashier knows exactly what I want every time I go to order now - haha! I highly recommend number 10, it'll change your life! (PS: The plastic wrapped buns usually sitting on one of the tables are FANTASTIC. They're filled with various veggies, pork, and a whole quail egg. She warms it up before serving it to you, too.)

My friend and I were shopping at the Hong Kong Market and decided to try out the Pho here. 9/26/14 (Friday 6:00-6:30pm) Pho Soc Trang's building is attached to the Hong Kong Market and has plenty of seats, so a big group would probably be fine. We ordered P9 and P11, both bowls of Pho, only different by the meat added in. Pho: Served nice and hot along with basil leaves, bean sprouts, jalopenos and slices of lime. The clear noodles were cooked well and broth was palatable. I enjoyed my bowl and felt that it was the perfect quantity for me. Total: $7 Overall, the pho was pretty good, but nothing spectacular. It has a pretty good and fair price for the portion you get. The owner/waitress was efficient, but not particularly smiley. Still, a good place to have some pho if you're in the area.

Another horrible Vietnamese restaurant ion Michigan. Everything that my family ordered was horrible...from the noodle to the rice dishes. I don't know what else to say. DO NOT COME HERE.

One of the best Vietnamese Beef Noodle Soup Restaurants in Grand Rapids. The food and service is always great. I ordered the #31 Beef Stew with clear noodles (Hu Tieu Bo Kho). This is one of my favorite soups to get. The soup has a rich broth of lemongrass, ginger, chili, star anise, cinnamon and cloves. With beef and tendon marinated and cooked to tender perfection. This really is a whole meal in one.

Another excellent Pho place is Asian Palace on 28th St SE just east of Division. Thats the only place we go to for Pho. The portions are larger. The rice plates are also superb. If you like Vietnamese (and Chinese) food give this place a try.

  • Scott L.

If you love pho as I do then you need to give this place a try! My 4 and 5 year old daughters beg me to take them here for the pho and to play with the little girl who's parents run it. They treat us amazing and the service is superb!

I loved their Pho tai... I have eaten around the world this delicious beef noodle soup and rarely do I find it as tastes as good as at this place. The decor of the restaurant is "hole in the wallish" but if it's the soup from Vietnam you are craving , well I bet this will satisfy.

Give it some love all it needs is change Pros -simple asian dishes -next to a market -nice costumer service -good lighting -fair price Cons -some dishes tastes like leftovers

Our regular spot for pho in GR. Do they have the best pho I'd ever eaten? No...but GR it is pretty solid and much better than some other places in the area. I usually get the regular combination pho. Their spring rolls are good too.

I have no idea why I have not written a review for this place a long time ago. This is probably my most favorite stop for Vietnamese food in GR after every trip to Kim Nhung. I first heard of this place from my boss, who originally moved here from Texas and absolutely love Pho. The food they serve here, especially the soup-based food, is Southern Vietnamese cuisine at its finest. I took many many many friends here and even my dad from Vietnam, and they absolutely love it. My dad said the Pho is actually better than many Pho in Vietnam and Pho Tank in Chicago. This place is definitely better than Golden 28. I usually order the dishes they display on the table to go, since they remind me so much of my favorite childhood treats. I have eaten here many times to the point the owner knows me too well. Also, it's cheap enough for college- student budget, so it's cheap enough for everyone. This place reminds me of how much I miss Grand Rapids.

Pho Soc Trang is one of my favorite stops whenever I travel to or through Grand Rapids. The proprietor is wonderfully friendly, and the food is always delicious. Now, I've never actually tried the pho. I go there for the Bun Bo Xao, and other fish sauce-based vermicelli rice noodle dishes. The Bun Bo Xao is as good as the stuff I could get in the New Orleans area. The ambiance is nothing much to speak of. But I don't go there for that. I go there for the flavors I've craved since moving to Michigan.

I'm sorry to those who think Pho Soc Trang is "amazing." You are all being ripped off so badly with how much they charge you and how TINY the food portions are! - it's like instant noodle size for $7.99?! really?! I have to stress this out once again - but I live in a city with a smaller Vietnamese community (Windsor, ON Canada) and the pho restaurants here give BIGGER FOOD PORTIONS AT A CHEAPER PRICE !(LARGE SIZE $5.99!) I had Michigan people tried pho here and they said the SMALL size pho bowl was too much compared to all of the Pho restaurants in Grand Rapids combined. It just came into realization for me as to why when I visit Michigan I don't see a lot of Vietnamese people in the Grand Rapids area don't eat out at Vietnamese restaurants as much as those where I live (keeping in mind there's a SMALLER Vietnamese community in my area).

This review is based on the pho and bun bo hue (spicy beef noodle soup). My husband ordered the pho and I was scared to try it. The noodle was skinnier than the normal pho noodles I'm used to seeing. He thought it was decent, but I think he was saying that only because he's been pho-deprived since we moved out here from California. The noodles tasted overcooked/mushy and broth oily. My bun bo hue was so disappointing. When the bowl came out all I smelled was fish sauce and the broth tasted like all they put in the broth to flavor it was fish sauce. Bun bo hue is supposed to have lemongrass in it with a kick to it, but i didn't taste any at all. I felt like I was sipping on fish sauce.

So, when my parents aren't making us rice noodle soup and my sisters and I are too lazy to make it, we end up here. It's a small little dive, but it does the job. The spring rolls are great here, and I will have the beef noodle soup. The coffee is super strong, and I end up diluting it with water and ice so it ends up becoming an iced coffee. The service is okay. In fact, I am not even sure if the lady spoke any English. There seemed to be lots of nodding. They like to play Vietnamese music videos here, and it's probably one of the more popular pho spots in the greater Grand Rapids area. The prices are average, and I'm sure it will continue to be our stand it spot for noodles.

This place is awesome! I frequent here quite a bit and their pho is top notch. If you ever go make sure to try the number 41 (if it's still the same) on the menu: Vermicelli noodles, pork, fresh greens (including a really nice mint accent), and a killer sauce!

What this restaurant lacks in ambiance, it makes up for with excellent food. The spring rolls are superb -- ask for Nuc Mam (pronounced Nook Mom) instead of the hoisin-based sauce. We had the Pho Tai and the Pho Tai Nam, and the broth base was as good as it gets, the beef flavorful, and the herbs fresh and plentiful. We will go back!
