Olde Suffolk Ale House

13 years ago I moved from the Ironwood area to Minneapolis. When I visit I make sure to stop at the Olde Suffolk Ale House. My friends know I like good food and drinks. Being used to craft cocktails and micro-brewed beers I feel right at home. From fantastic martinis to the occasional ice cream drink (sorry guys) they never let me down. The food is top notch with a great selection. On my last visit I ordered the prime rib and to say it was one of the best I've ever had is an understatement. If you are in the area and looking for a great meal, great drinks and exception service this is your place.
This was our first visit to the area. After a day of sightseeing, we stopped in Ironwood. We checked out Yelp to see where we could eat. Some places were closed, some had mediocre or bad reviews, but we saw good reviews for the Old Suffolk Ale House and decided to try it out. It was a Thursday night and when we got there we wondered if it was open. There was just one guy, presumably the owner. He assured us he was open and we could order anything off the menu. The food was fantastic! I had the meat pizza. The meats were all made on the premises and made for a unique and great pizza. My wife had an incredible seafood dish. Word of note: The website only lists a lunch menu. They had an extensive dinner menu as well.
I found this restaurant via Yelp and am so glad we got the chance to stop by while in town recently. This has got to rank up there with one of the most unique restaurant experiences we've had in quite some time. First of all I always do everything possible to stop by local in-town restaurants vs the chains on the main roads. The ambiance of the place jumps right out at you as soon as you enter. We were seated in the main dining area separate from the bar area and were the only ones there at the beginning so it was quiet and nice. We kind of cracked up at the waiter. T-shirt and shorts, and it looked like he got called in on short notice if the regular server didn't show. No idea if this is typical or not, but we found it funny. Also, aside from needing to remind him about my salad & beer, he did a decent job. The main reason I still went with 5-stars was because of the food. Holy smokes, we had enjoyable and flavorful meals. The broiled whitefish I had was among the best I've ever eaten, and I can see why many people keep going back again & again. I have no idea when the next time we'll find ourselves in Ironwood, but if we do make it in the future, the Olde Suffolk will be a definite stop.

Pasty Heaven. Was kind of bummed they do not have the Cornish variation hot and ready. But the Traditional is still phenomenal. Some may feel the need to put ketchup on the pasty, but that is akin to ruining a steak with A1 or other similar condiment. These are outstanding just plain, but to each their own. Highly recommend this homey cafe for a real treat if you are in the Ironwood/Hurley/Bessemer area.
We stopped at Joe's this Sunday to get pasties for home. Two couples were ahead of us - each couple ordered ten frozen. We ordered twenty to bring home to Tampa. Forty pasties in the space of five minutes. That says something about how treasured Joe's is! Delicious pasties, friendly service. And, we learned that they ship in winter. If we can't make it back next year, we'll have to have our pasty fix shipped.
We stopped in on our way back from hiking. We were greeted by a very friendly woman who served us our pasty's. As we sat there many people from all over the surrounding area came in to get pasty's too (even from 5+ hours away). The food was delicious! If I am ever in the area I will be back!

I questioned how a small town cafe could get such rave reviews before we stopped in. The "skillets" were recommended and rightly so. I had the meat-lovers skillet and it was excellent. That combined with the fast service and friendliness of the servers the place was deserving of five stars.
I had crepes (moms recipe) you can have them anyway you want. The owners name is Jan. super friendly. A good cup of coffee too.
Great food and friendly service. This diner is a must if you are in Ironwood.

We had a wonderful valentines lunch here today. The house made soups and gnocchi were amazing. We all devoured the tiramisu and molten chocolate nutella cake for dessert. The owner is a delight. We also enjoyed the artwork by the extremely talented Ann Marie Batiste, a local artist from Hurley, and purchased a beautiful painting from her. We are up here for the weekend from Madison, and may just return for dinner tomorrow night!
Overall my family had a pretty bad experience. We got the bruschetta for an appetizer and waited at least 25 minutes to find that it was a cold tomato sauce with chunks of cheese to spread on bread. We were also not brought enough plates for all of us and had to ask the waiter for another one as he came back from the kitchen without it. I had the caprese pizza and it was the most tasteless thing I have ever had and was ridiculously over priced. Needless to say we will not be back.
This place is a real gem! To be honest, I had low expectations of an Italian restaurant in Ironwood. To say the least, I was quite pleasantly surprised. The food is wonderful, with great touches like homemade cookies, and the conversation is warm and amicable. The place doubles as an art gallery, so the ambiance is also nice. I highly recommend Buon Appetito.

New to the area and super happy about our breakfast experience. Our waitress was friendly with a warm smile and just made us feel at home. The food was AMAZING! Loved their homemade sausage! Can't wait to try their lunch/dinner menu.
Fun diner atmosphere. Good food but the pasty was nasty!!! Waitress was nice and entertaining.
Awesome breakfast! The absolute best I've ever had!! Friendly hometown service. Huge portions. Must have the pancakes or French toast, or both!!! Won't be disappointed!!!

Pizza is good but it's all about the salad bar. Traditional supper club large salad bar. Best in the UP by far. Ask for Noah and doug aka adam. The bartender is very personable and sassy - in a friendly way. Thanks Vera for another great time at Taconellis.
Fish fry is great, salad bar is one of the best I have seen. Won't be disappointed.fast and friendly service.

The hotel I was at recommended this place. There aren't many options in the area so take that into account when reading. It is a quiet little place on a Thursday night. There was one other person in the restaurant at 8 pm. I ordered the philly beef and cheese. It came on a kaiser roll with fries. Was a little disappointed with the simplicity of it. It was 3 deli roast beef slices with a few green peppers and onions on top. The waitress brought the water, brought the foood and I never saw her again. Not that I wanter her checking on me every 5 min but it's not like they were busy.
Worst service ever. Our waitress Brandy took our order and then disappeared. We had to go to the bar the get refills. When she brought out my chicken wrap (I ordered the chicken salad) she took it back after I offered her to leave it. Ten minutes later, I got my food. Did I mention it was a salad. To make things worst, it was obvious the chicken from the wrap was taken out and put on my salad. Guess that takes ten minutes. Kids got the supreme burger. If you like a frozen burger over cooked then you might like the supreme burger. It also took her ten minutes to bring my wife's dressing for her wrap. She came back one more time to ask how our crappy food was. We order refills but had to once again go back to the bar to get them. Brandy was never seen again. Well we did see her when she took care of the only other customers in the restaurant when she told them their best selling item was gross. The bar tender had to bring our bill to us. As we walked out, Brandy was sitting in the kitchen talking to the cook. Don't go.
This was good the first few times we came a few years ago. We vacation in the area once a year, and it seems as thought the service and food just keep going downhill. The waitstaff act like we are a pain to seat and wait on each time we come. Every year we go there out of familiarity, thinking that our last experience was a fluke, but the most recent time we went we decided that was it, we will not be returning.

The Breakwater Restaurant

Reviews:
The Breakwater moved into the old Big Boy Restaurant after it changed owners. It still has the "big boy" feel to it (along with most of the original decor) Don't let this fool you though. it's still every bit the good greasy spoon Big Boy used to be but with a much bigger and better menu. Great for a hangover sunday breakfast. (Or post sunday church get together) depending on which crowd you roll with.
Staff was friendly, but food was sub-par. Mozzarella sticks were pretty good, but the chicken and rice soup had no rice and the pie was soggy.
We stopped on our way home from the ice caves to eat a late lunch and gave the breakwater a try. I ordered a Ashland burger new on the menu and watched as the largely teenage staff goofed around in the back and another couple came in and left due to lack of attention. I ordered a medium burger and a charcoaled to a crisp burger came back. The cheese was imitation quality and I was unable to eat it. I did eat what was somewhat edible of my burger and left the rest of my plate. The onion rings were ok. I had asked the waitress if the onion rings were crispy coated or smooth and a male staff member yelled back that all the rings come prebattered and he didn't know. The rest of my family was also disappointed in their meals. My husbands chicken was undercooked and smelled funny, his biscuit cold and mashed potatoes looked like a science experiment. Steer clear of this resteraunt if your truly hungry. Luckily we are headed south on our way home and will get some real food.

Don't be put off by appearances. This place is pretty tasty. The menu is fairly extensive and the waitress we had actually cared. It may be a little pricey but I am notoriously cheap. We had three dishes between the three of us and they were all good. 3.7 stars
Used to love this place but today was a real disappointment . They must be trying to earn more money by cutting the quality. Instead a pot of tea a coffee cup of tea but no offer for a refill. Food was cold and had to be sent back twice. The " cashchew" chicken must have been left over from another dish, breaded, with skin on and fat. We won't be back. Will go to Human in Woodruff. Also wait staff should have a uniform. Waitress too casual in their dress.
Wow! If this is Chinese food I'm a Russian! As soon as I saw it was Chinese/Mexican food I started to hang-up, and I should have. I have too many negatives as food quality, taste Etc. let me just say the good thing(s); close to hotel, fast & cheep. That's it. If people like this I'd hate to see what they think is bad, 1 word, WOW. Not even close. Grade F-

The restaurant has a semi-scenic location right on a golf course just a few minutes outside of Hurley/Ironwood. It's classified as a pizza restaurant but, from the looks of the menu, they are more focused on steaks and ribs. My husband and mother in law both had ribs and said they were decent. The salad bar that came with the meal, however, was pretty disappointing (not fresh and very picked over by 6:30pm). The larger, meal-sized salads were okay, and my father in law enjoyed his steak salad quite a bit - "pretty darn good". I, however, had to pick the 'grilled' chicken off of my dish because it was so incredibly dry. Granted, there aren't a lot of great food options in Hurley. But I'd recommend the Bell Chalet over Elk & Hound any day. We won't be coming back.
