Excellent place. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable, especially about craft beer. Good craft beer selection and there is also wine. Didn't try any candies/chocolates but they look great. I will definitely be returning.

We make Hillside a regular stop when visiting the Houghton/Hancock area. The prices are great, the serving sizes are huge, and the food is home cooked! It seems like a place where everyone knows everyone.
The food was average. You can see through the coffee. Most of the food on the menu is white on the plate and made better with ketchup or maple syrup. However, they were very accommodating of my partner with food restrictions. The wait staff was attentive. What really grossed us out, though, was the dirt and fuzz on the air conditioner above my head. Clearly, it's been awhile since the health inspector has been there.
We have been regulars for several years, since we first found this place. The Skillet breakfasts are the best breakfast in town! Always hot and fresh, service is always top notch. The place is small and simple, but the food is good ol home cookin'!

I've eaten at worse places, but our food was not that great. I might try it again for a redemption, but not the same items. The deep fried cauliflower was pretty good. The marinara sauce tasted very watery. My diet Pepsi tasted funny - like it was non-diet. My chicken parm was almost inedible. The portion size was giant, unfortunately the chicken was so dry and overcooked I barely ate a third of it. The chicken tasted like it was either fairly old or it was reused from a previous order (or mistake). I did not take the rest home. The side salad was decent, the side of vegetables was not good. The vegetable mix was the typical frozen mix of carrots, cauliflower, and broccoli. It looked as if the cooks simply added some water and microwaved it. The fries were a little under cooked in the middle. The bread was was hard and not fresh. A lot of food for a reasonable price; however, the food was not very good overall. My friend ordered the lasagna. The portion size was gigantic. It was 2-3 times larger than we expected. It contained a very heavy portion of beef in the sauce. Some people would probably love this, but we are not big beef eaters so it was overkill. The coleslaw was okay, but it had more of a potato salad consistency. The server was friendly and the food came out reasonably fast. Maybe the burgers and other entrees are much better.
So here's the deal. The Douglas House Saloon (or the Dog as I have heard it called) is a great little bar that you should definitely check out if you are in Houghton. There's a nice bar, a pool table and a machine of Michigan pull tabs (which I always end up getting). The drinks are always good and the best thing about The Dog is their pickled eggs. I had never had a picked egg before trying one at The Dog, and their pickled eggs have made me a believer. For only $.75 you get an egg pickled to perfection served with jalapenos and hot sauce. There is no better combo than a pickled egg and a beer at The Dog to start your night off right!
The dog is covered in dark wood and is beautifully lit in the evening. I'm glad I checked out this down to earth pub. The only backside is the bartenders can be rude and slow at times. Bring your extra quarters for pool and darts.

OK the food is pretty tasty and reasonably priced however the menus and tables were so dirty I handled the menu by the edges and did not lean my elbows on the table. I also observed staff eating behind the counter but where their food was coming from I cannot say. So I guess I'd go there again because the food was good, but they should really tighten up their act as far as cleanliness and decorum.
Based primarily on 1-2 visits to all the local Asian places this is the best Asian food in Houghton in my opinion - best vegetarian selection of the local places. Great flavor!! I loved the tofu, peanut and pepper dish.
Had the noodles, very good. A bit light on the chicken I asked for, but all around good and healthy quantity. The Sweet and Sour Chicken was amazing as well.

Rodeo Mexican Kitchen

Reviews:
We were pleasantly surprised to find this place in Houghton, as it's hard to find whole, unprocessed ingredients in local restaurants. We are big fans of Chipotle back home, and while not the same, The Rodeo also uses fresh ingredients that don't upset my stomach. They use fresh cilanto and lime, and their chicken is also noteworthy.
Great little burrito place in Houghton. A little bit off the main road but well worth it! Chips and guacamole were a great way to start and now I still have half a burrito to finish later. Overall it is a lovely spot to avoid fast food chains.
Hands down the best Mexican food in the area. Our first visit was a happy one. I ordered the veggie burrito and my son got the beef tacos (corn), both to go. Both of us enjoyed our meals. The ingredients were fresh. However, I think next time I would order the burrito bowl instead of the burritos. The tortillas were less than stellar, grocery store ones. You know the tough, chewy kind? Maybe try flipping it on a skillet? We ordered their hot salsa, which while tasty was yooper-hot and nowhere near the hot of real Mexican salsa. Glad to have found this place though.

Neat place. The inside is really cool. The bar staff was attentive and served me a sandwich within about 10-15 minutes of ordering. The sandwich was cheap and tasty. I was unable to sample the beer but I saw they have an impressive bottle selection (I saw Founder's Breakfast Stout & Rubaeus as well as Bell's Hopslam, plus a few from Upper Hand Brewing). Some of the domestic beers were shoved into the back behind miscellaneous stuff so that's always a great sign of a good beer selection.
The pizza (tostada) was okay. A bit messy and greasy. Can it be served in something slightly large than the cardboard circle is was made and served on? The service was a bit slow. The ambience was okay, nice foot traffic, cool atmosphere.
Pizzas were fabulous! I had the Tostada and it was great, hot sauce could have been hotter but next time I'll add Jalapeños! My wife had the superb lobster ( 90% lobster/10% whitefish) pizza and raved about the flavors. Our friend had the Garlic chicken white pizza and said it's her favorite, she's a native! Great service and AWESOME surroundings, love the stained glass windows and chandeliers and gnome murals.

Four Season Tea Room

The Tea Room is a personal favorite. High tea in the middle of the UP! Sign me up. You are not at the Claridges, of course, but the Tea Room is an adorable place with excellent lunch selections. I find their soups and quiche combination great value for money. Tasty and right portion size. My son loves their tuna sandwich which has horseradish in it. If you want an experience go for the tea, they got excellent traditional English sandwiches, scones and cookies in a 3 tier tray.
The perfect place for two, we shared a wonderful and very well-crafted lunch in an intimate setting. The food was spectacular, smaller portions but we ordered the tea for two which came with 4 courses essentially- scones, sandwiches, cakes and desserts. Along with our delicious entrees and a side of soup. It was more than enough food for the two of us. We will be returning again and again. This is a great little hideaway, perfect for conversation and catching up with loved ones and friends.
Delicious tea, RUDE service. Upon arriving we waited to be seated for 5-10 minutes before finally sitting down.. Waited 5-10 minutes more before seeing a staff member. Once greeted we were scolded for seating ourselves...

Excellent food especially for a small town. Order off the special Chinese menu. I had the spicy boiled whitefish soup - incredible! Great potstickers and Shanghai rolls!
Nice come as you are place to eat. Tucked off the beaten path with great parking. I had the Mongolian Beef with fried rice and a glass of pinot noir. Decent beer/wine list, fast service. The beef looks to be a nicely marinated flank steak, nice and tender. Dinner portion is a good size, I hate getting too much food when I travel, my goal is not to have to deal with a to go box or have them toss good food! Wish the menu had a vegetarian noodle option that is not Pad Thai - allergic to nuts and was really in the mood for a noodle dish.
The food is usually good when you eat in but when you get take out it is very hit and miss. Today we spent $45 and the appetizers were good but the entrees were awful. Tried the Kung Pao Chicken and it was all chicken and water chestnuts, no "mixed vegetables" like the menu says. Would have been better off making my own.
