The old Avalon Bar is looking good! Nothing fancy, a little brighter, newer pine paneling and fun beer signs. The floor is still uneven but that adds to the charm. The food is top notch bar food. The classic Thad burgers are the best burgers around. Choose between a quarter or half pounder and enjoy this delicious all beef burger cooked to order. I like the deep fried green beans with homemade jalapeño ranch sauce to liven up the meal. I must also recommend the Avalon Club on homemade sourdough bread. It's stacked high with juicy ham and turkey and is big enough to share or take home half for another meal. If you're in Hillman on a Friday the fish dinners are the best. Thad offers deep fried or baked fish with the usual sides, fresh creamy coleslaw fries or baked potato. Most small bars in Northern MI don't offer anything baked. It's nice to have a non-greasy option. Make sure you get there fairly early for the fish. They usually sell out by 6:30 or so unless you call ahead and reserve your dinners. The Avalon Bar has good food, family friendly service, beer, a fairly stocked bar, keno and that Up North come as you are relaxed atmosphere. Love it.
