Went here on a Monday night because a group of friends wanted to go. I expected terrible service, overpriced menu and poor quality based on the reviews I read. Our server was a solid B, good not great. I ordered the Signature Steak. I got to cook it to my liking, and it was one of the best steaks I've had. It was $17.99 for a 10 oz. steak with two sides - which is a price I would expect from a steakhouse. If you don't want the experience of cooking your own steak, don't come here. If that sounds like a fun thing (which it was and was not nearly as difficult as some reviewers stated) then give this place a try. I will return based on the experience and quality of food.

I will need to return here to update this review. When I stopped by I was interested in the heavily hyped concept of cooking a steak at your table setting. The meat quality was good and the service was also good. Unfortunately many of the salad components were "not available" at the time requiring some substitutions. It may be a fun concept for some to cook a steak on a granite slab right in front of you, but remember you will smell like steak grease and grill smoke from this experience. Next time I will have the cook prepare my steak in the kitchen. Interesting gimmick but not for me anyway.

Food and service good... But hey.. The lighting! One could preform surgery in that light above tables and around. I suppose if you wear sunglasses inside, you could experience a relaxed dim lit atmosphere to dine in.

Exceptional presentation of food and delightful on the palate! Best restaurant I have been to in a long time! I want one of these in Macomb County!

We found the service to be exceptional. Every waiter, waitress and hostess was extremely nice and went out of their way to be kind. Food was good, noticed that menu has also expanded a bit which is wonderful.

I have dined at this location multiple times and have been continuously impressed with each experience. I have had great servers that were very knowledgeable about the menu and it's contents. My favorite experience included a Father's Day celebration with my family. We shared the calamari and cheesy lobster dip which were both delicious. I am obsessed with the sauce that the calamari is topped with. I personally ordered the sirloin w/ the delicious rock sauce and was definitely impressed. The idea of cooking your own steak to your liking is fun and a great way to get the table interacting. We shared the volcano dessert and loved the way the sparkler was lit. I personally find it great for a special occasion. We will definitely be back!

A new favorite. It was a Friday night and It did take a little more time than we had been told to get a table, but it was definitely worth the wait. My husband and I ordered pretzel bites that you dip in cheese sauce and it was no small appetizer, there was enough for a family. We decided to split a steak dinner between the two of us, there was so much food we actually had to take some home. It was fun to take our time and enjoy talking and cooking our steak on the stone, and ended up being a very enjoyable night Out!

Holy Crap! Having a giant, raw steak on a mega-hot stone slab for you to cook to your own liking is not only a fun, unique experience, but the flavor is amazing. I was thinking about it for days. They provide an excellent sauce for dipping, too. We were there for lunch and I ordered the 12 oz for just over $20. It was HUGE and I was well-satisfied with it. I cannot wait to get some more of that action!

Food was delicious. Between the two of us, we ordered filet, scallops, and salmon. The filet was one of the best steaks we have ever had. It was juicy and buttery and we were able to cook it to our desired done-ness on the stone. The scallops were also cooked on the stone and they were the best scallops we have ever had; perfectly fresh. The salmon was cooked in the kitchen and was good, slightly overcooked, but still quite tasty. I knocked off a star for service and atmosphere. I think the ventilation could use a bit of work as it is super smoky from all of the stones cooking. I also think it may have been the room we were sat in. Overall, we really enjoyed the restaurant and will return.

I want to give this restaurant 5 stars but the lack of beer descriptions in the menu and the fact that they don't let you taste before you buy, forces me to lower the rating to 4. It's also very, very loud when they are busy like tonight. Issues aside -Man! What a great meal! The food was phenomenal! I had the 10 ounce sirloin and my husband had a chicken dish that was outstanding! The winner of the night was the lobster bisque and the gigantic lobster claw that came with it! Definitely worth the trip and the wait! If we lived here, we would definitely be back!

The rock on a stone thing really creeps me out, like if I want a steak can you just cook it for me? Thx. But anyway that's the whole point of going. What I CAN say is that the bar area is really nice - there's a bunch of TVs to stare at, a really great selection of draft beer, and it's very clean with cool bartenders. If you're trying to grab a drink in Htown, this is the place.

Perhaps the concept played out, or the Management/staff is just bored, but thus place seems to have run its course. Waitress with absolutely no idea about the wine selection (red wine lends itself to steak, right?) And no ability to recommend anything not get than the one white and one red she has tasted. While the Manager stepped up with a suggestion, the waitress showed little interest in anything but closing out the shift. She actually left our table in the middle of our order to chase down a smoker... Food was very good, they do have high quality meats, flavored well and your control the cooking, so its always done to order. Food- 4 stars Service- 2 stars Can spend $100 on dinner & drinks better elsewhere.

Just happened to stumble across this place and we weren't expecting much. It's located in a strip mall area for starters. We were pleasantly surprised. It was not busy so our service was very good. The whole cooking on a rock at your table sounded daunting to me but it was really kind of fun. And the zip sauce is awesome! I bet that stuff would be great on anything. The other menu items are okay, but you should really try a stone cooking option for the whole experience. They only have entertainment on Wednesday and Sunday, if you're not into the club scene, you will enjoy it. Just classic covers well done. Give this place a try, you won't be disappointed.

First time here, staying across the road at the Best Western. Sat. night wait time only 15 min at 8pm. Sports bar atmosphere, with lots of screens everywhere. Staff was pleasant, speedy service. Plenty of options for everyone. Noise level was moderate. Wait time for food was very short. My son ordered the steak, cook yourself, he really enjoyed it, what young man doesnt want grilling practice? Good quality meat, great taste, simple salt pepper on the side. Appetizer of calamari steaks in lemon, were awesome! We also ordered the 1/2 rack ribs with sides, perfect string beans, perfect butter garlic potatoes, and the ribs were very impressive for a northern state location.. Moderate pricing. Nice selection of wine, beers, and drinks. One minus for our waiter, Corey.. Excellent up until he was gone for 15-20 min. another waitress came to our table to offer service, I inquired about our waiter, and she said he was eating his lunch. I guess I expected him to tell us that and say another will cover him as a professional courtesy. We closed out without him. Total time spent was 1.40 hrs. Recommend it, will be back soon. Visiting from CA. Another location in Novi, MI

We really love this place. The kids have a great time cooking their own steaks and it keeps them entertained throughout the meal. The tuna is really great too if you aren't a steak eater. Yummy wedge salads - awesome campfire sweet potatoes and if you are looking for an appetizer- the pretzels are delicious. We just took in a group of 12 and the service was top notch. It's very busy but they take reservations so I would recommend making those ahead of time. We love the desserts too. All around great place.

Best steak I've ever had, very cool place they bring your steak out raw on a 755° stone and you get to cut and cook it right at your table,I choose the 12oz black angus awesome cut very flavorful, their homemade steak sauce is very good too different and unique.I also tried the apple vinaigrette dressing on my salad it was very good.if your ever near Hartland and want the best steak and unique cooking experience I highly recommend this place. Oh and if your a sports fan there's multiple flat screens all over the place

Out for my mother's birthday and retirement celebration. Was quoted a 45 minute wait time. After waiting 35 minutes and asking for a updated we over heard someone who just arrived get quoted 20 minutes. When I asked for our updated status they told us another 20 minutes. Something doesn't add up here! Not a good start to what was suppose to be a nice evening.

  • Eric S.

Ridiculous wait time. We didn't stay to eat, because it was a minimum 90-minute wait. Parking lot jammed, people spilling out the door. Their call-ahead seating policy clearly doesn't work.. People in the lobby were complaining that they'd been lingering for over an hour even though they'd called ahead for seating. Completely ridiculous.

First time to black rock. Nice atmosphere not a long wait at all got seated right away. We arrived around 530pm. We started out with the lobster dip as the appetizer it was very greasy and not a lot of lobster. I would not recommend it. We ordered our steaks very good piece of meat salad was fresh the apple vinaigrette was suggested and was very good. Overall a good experience a little pricey.

We had a reservation for 10 and a baby. We arrived to find that our reservation had been given away. The hostess says "oh you're ---- we thought they were ----- we are sorry and we will get you seated as soon as possible." We then, all very upset, sit and wait noticing a large table with no one sitting at it. After a few minutes a group comes in and they are given this table. When we asked why they were given priority over our group we were informed that it was because it was the owner. I am unsure whether the hostess informed the owner of the earlier mix up with our table or not and we decided, to my poor judgement, not to confront the owner about this issue. We ended up waiting over 40 minutes to be seated. The food came out slowly and wait staff was slow, not to mention clumsy as they ran into our 1 yr olds high chair with a cart. The whole experience made us feel very disrespected and we will not be visiting Black Rock again. I guess I should mention the food. Over all the food is good if maybe a little over priced. and they did give us 2 whole free appetizers and 2 deserts for our troubles.... update. after posting this I was given an apology and offered a meal at half off the bill. Also, he let me know that neither the owner nor anyone in his party was aware of the situation that night when they were seated.

Perfection in a strip mall of US23!!!! Who knew?! You get to cook your own steak to the rare of your liking on himalyan stone. My fourteen year old thought that was the bomb!!! And we each ordered a different steak and each was very good quAlity. The baked potato was Yummy. The asparagus perfectly steamed. Margaritas were large for the price and nice flavor. I love a good drink! Our server was young but adorable and attentive. Then we were surprised by some live music and the singer/vocalist was so sweet we even went back to leave her money in her tip jar. Bathrooms clean and tidy. We will definitely go back as we travel between Ann Arbor and Up North on US-23. A++++++++

I am sorry, but we love this place!! Jil and I like the "wine room" because it is away from the main bar and restaurant area, which is loud. We are both stuck on the Filet, because we think it is the best and it IS! Your meat is served on a 700 degree hot stone and you cook each individual piece, so every bite is perfect! The Zip Sauce is to die for!!! Huge selection of great wines and draft beers!! Salads and sides are all wonderful! Professional wait staff and management!! This is a unique dining experience and we go back again and again! Every meal has been fantastic. Wait, yes sometimes, but what great place does not have a wait? They will take reservations at times. Enjoy!

I was very intrigued and excited to hear that my company lunch would be here. The concept is interesting - cooking steak on a really hot rock. I ordered the Black Rock Special deal which came with two sides - I chose sweet potato fries and clam chowder. We also ordered calamari, pretzels, and fried asparagus for the table which were okay but not anything to rave about at home. The clam chowder was delicious and the serving size of the fries was very generous. I enjoyed my cooking experience - we learned quickly to cut small pieces and place a few on the rock at each time. Also, either dip the meat in the butter sauce or smother the sauce on the rock prior to putting the meat on. The rock seemed like cool off within half an hour so cooking multiple pieces at a time would insure some quickly cooked meat. Service was good and my team seemed to enjoy our food. I would definitely come back again - 17.99$ for a substantial steak and two sides is quite the deal!

Smells like charred steak in here! Which is the only perk. The 'event' started off with them being packed as all hell. Also, the main dining room is super loud. Good thing we called that day when they opened for a reservation, which couldn't be booked until 8pm. There is pretty much zilch lobby space, and they stuck tables on the end of the main dinning room rows as a total afterthought. You are standing around right next to people trying to have a meal when they are busy. Thank god I didn't have to fart. Our server mentioned he was called back to work because all these young kids called in to party it up. He comforted us by letting us know he had taken his medication, and then went on a 4 minute rant that was awkward. We asked him if the appetizers were large enough to share. We got a story, but no answer. Listen, $11 calamari better be freaking amazing, and a good portion. This was a joke. The sauce was a mayo salty mess, and the portion was tiny. The calamari was tender, but it was thick sticks averaging about 2-3" long. A large platter of the worlds best calamari (IMO) from the Capital Grille is $13. The cheese pretzel thing was nice, as it came with a pepper jack style, and a typical cheddar. The bowels of cheese came on mini hot stones so the cheese stayed hot the entire length of the appetizer which is really an awesome concept and win. Imagin eating cheese dipped pretzels for 20 mins and the cheese is just as liquid and hot as when it first comes to the table. This is a niche idea that could score at the bar scene. Keeping things warm that can't overcook, and that you want warm. Serving your soup on them, or spinach artichoke dip for example. The whole attraction of this place is a one trick pony. all hype, no delivery. I really don't like sticking my fork in a 100% raw cut of beef so I can cut it up myself, and then go scoop into my mash potato while it cooks.... I'm a medium rare fan, so I cut them thick. I managed to do alright, but I had to remove pieces to cool as going straight from stone to mouth was too hot. Also no resting of the meat lost me a lot of juice. Also if you want the same temp you need to cook all your meat until desired, then remove ALL of it so it doesn't over cook while you eat. Otherwise remove a lot of the meat to the sideraw, and cook / eat a few bites at a time piping hot. The mashed potatoes were good, but loaded was dumb. Chewy reheated small amount of bacon, lame amount of cheese, and no chive. That's not freaking loaded people. Also, am I at the Continental breakfast at the motel with these little gold tin-foil wrapped butter packets? Clam chowder needs calms. Nuff said. At least the concept was neat.

I've been here numerous times for lunch. The food us fantastic and the steaks cooking on the rocks brings an amazing smell to the place. They have a great selection of appetizers and drinks.

A-Ok. I didn't find this place extremely over priced as some, but I do think that the novelty of the Black Rock cooking is factored into the price a bit, which I am fine with. There are also less expensive entrees on the menu as well, although I do think they push the rock things a bit, nothing more than pushing a dessert, etc. They had a good selection of draft beers and TVs everywhere, which makes it nice for a group of friends. Smell is a bit intense so I'd agree, not a great date night place because you will smell after. It is also hard to walk in and not want a steak. I had a center cut rib-eye, which was A-OK. My friend had the special $20 for flank stuffed with cheese and it looked great. Also entrees come with two sides so it's a big meal, I'd say.

I ordered the bone-in ribeye. The idea is that they hand you a raw piece of high-quality steak, with a smoldering hot 'black rock', and you cook the thing yourself at the table. If you're a kid who loves to play with your dinner before you eat it, you might have fun. If you're a steak enthusiast relentlessly pursing the ultimate slap-your-tastebuds-silly ribeye, this probably isn't the place. The idea is fun, but it doesn't work. Here's why: First of all, the steak doesn't have any seasoning. The rock is hot enough to cook the steak, but it isn't hot enough to give it a legit sear. Typically you allow a steak to settle for a bit, and thus re-absorb some of the juices that leak out when it's cooked. Thus, the waiters recommendation to cut it into pieces while still on the rock didn't make a lot of sense. I also thought the steak itself was too lean. You could see it didn't have great marbling to begin with. The steaks saving grace was probably the yellow buttery/soy sauce they served with it. But IMO, no $38 cut of meat, should be dependent on a sauce to save the day. I even tried cutting a few pieces and cooking the steak IN the sauce. That didn't work either. The French onion soup was quite good. No complaints there. But the Caesar salad, and the mashed potatoes were less than I expected for the price. I don't think the Caesar dressing was made from scratch. I was guessing it was poured out of a bag. I also wasn't too impressed with the salmon. It was fishy and a bit overcooked, but we didn't sent it back, because we were short on time. Oh well. I'll try anything once. The waiter was friendly, and service was quite good.

Went here for the first time Saturday and the experience was great. Started with the 3 cheese bread and the garlic sauce was wonderful. Had the chicken Alfredo for my meal and it was great. Great service but a little pricy.

Food is good, cant't help but think I'm in royal oak when I eat there though. This is Hartland! Not everyone can afford to eat there, can't believe they are as popular as they are. Steak is amazing though

We went here for my husband's birthday. He wanted a good steakhouse experience and despite the mediocre reviews this seemed like it might be the place. The first time we attempted to go was Saturday (with VIP seating) and it was ridiculously packed. There were far too many people, the noise level was insane and the meat cooking smell was nauseating. We decided to leave and give it another shot on a week night. Our next attempt was awesome. The atmosphere was much more manageable. The smell was actually pleasant and a conversation was possible. The food was delicious. We will be going here again, but it's not a great weekend spot...

A brilliant idea to eat on a rock. You get to eat at your own pace which is great. Although you can't go too slow the rock cools off eventually. I found myself having to add a lot of salt on the steak because it had no seasoning. But the steak itself I felt like was a high quality piece of meat. The fries were good and mashed potatoes were decent. Prices were pretty outrageous . The service was great and there were many TVs with all the sports action on them. This place could be much better with some minor adjustments. PS- restrooms very small but clean with a tv .

Smells amazing as soon as you walk in! All the food was great and service was even better!! Our waitress went out of her way to explain how to cook steak on a stone for us and helped us order exactly what we wanted. Went on a busy night yet still managed to get right in!

Wow!!! What a steak!!!! I am in town visiting my dad and he recommended this restaurant. They bring your steak out on a stone that has been heated to 750 degrees this allows you to cook it the way you want. Friendly staff and great food. You will not be disappointed. I will visit this restaurant the next time in town.

I came in and there was a 15 minute wait. So I went to the bar to have a Cosmo. The bartender Corey brought my drink and as soon as he sat it in front of me he expected money. Never experienced that before. Normally people just put your tab there and wait for you to pay for it. I told him my friend will be in shortly and pay for it. Then 5 minutes later my friend sat down and he mentioned payment again. That kinda pissed me off because the drink was only $8. I felt discriminated against with this situation. A few minutes later we were seated at our table. Our waitress was excellent. The Food was very good. Everything was good except for Corey.

Personally, I find this place to be hoaky. I agree with another reviewer that if you are a steak enthusiast, this place will make you roll your eyes. The idea is that you cook your own steak on a hot rock at your table. It's a gimmick at best. The hot rock never really sears in flavor. The piece of meat is obviously not marinated and has no flavor. It's oddly lean meat. I found the atmosphere reminded me of a food court in a mall. For what you get, the price is very expensive. Two of us went here and spent $150 to have dinner ($180 with tip). We did get a bottle of Michigan Traverse City Reisling, which was priced about $20 more than you can get it for in a grocery store. I would rather spend my $150 at Capital Grille.

Delicious food, highly recommend the pretzel and fondue app, and classic hot stone steak for a main. However, if you come on a Saturday night be prepared to WAIT! Despite calling ahead for priority seating, my family ended up waiting 1hour 15 mins to be seated, and about 2 hours to eat out first bite. While I appreciate the quality of food and the restaurants concept, I hope something can be done better for parties waiting to lessen the wait time and improve the experience while waiting. One certain fault in the night was being misled on the wait time by the hostess but this was retributed with 2 free apps. A definite spot to hit, just be aware of when you decide to visit and potential wait times.

For a place in the middle of no where. The steak came on a 750 degree stone and you ate it while it cooked. This was a fun place to go to to make our trip memorable. And the wait staff was very awesome and friendly. A great selection of beer

This review is based on my 45 minute wait (despite reservations). We didn't eat there, but I will say making reservations didn't do us any good. My husband made them for 7:15 and at 7:50 they said we had at least 10 minutes still to wait. To be fair, it was homecoming evening and the place was packed. My husband and I are relatively new to the area. We came from an area with much more variety by way of restaurants and are always searching for good eats locally. We prefer 'non-chain' restaurants and Black Rock was highly rated. The only real feedback i have about the food was that the smell that permeated the air wasn't one I enjoyed. I love a good steak, and the smell that goes with it. But based on the atmosphere, scents, and the wait time, I don't think we'll be going out of our way to go back.

This place is incredible. I'm not a huge steak person, and this is seriously the best steak I've ever had. I like that you get to cook your meat yourself, so it's exactly how you want it. I like mine well, well done, and I always have to send it back at restaurants. It was awesome getting to cook it how I wanted it. And that garlic steak sauce that comes with it...oh my gosh. The best.

The food and atmosphere were great. I was however put off by the hostess at the front named Mackenzie. We attempted to add a person to our reservation and told her we would wait extra time but she informed us that they didn't have the seating. We told her we would make room at a booth for four. She proceeded to carry on by rolling her eyes at us and gossiping to her counterpart up front. It was an extremely uncomfortable wait for a table. My girlfriend wanted to leave but I convinced her to stay. Not sure about any future visits.

Black rock's claim to fame is the 700 degree "cooking stone" that allows you to cook your steak or fish in whatever way you prefer. For someone that likes their tuna steak lightly seared, yet still warm, this is the only way to do it. Aside from the stone, everything else is mediocre at best. There really isn't any other reason to come here. I've never had problems with service, but I sit at the bar and the service seems faster then at the other tables.

One our favorite places to eat. The steaks are awesome. My kids love cooking on the stone. We've had several different menu items which were all excellent, but found our favorite are the steaks. I can't say enough good things. My last visit I had the lobster bisque. It was a little spicy but I loved the flavor. It was very rich... more tomato based than cream. And it was served with a big lobster claw sticking out (a fun big bonus). The zip sauce is very good adding a little zip to your steak. I also add mushrooms to mine. And I get the loaded baked potato...a meal in itself. I usually end up taking home half my meal at least. The service is always outstanding. Desserts are over the top yummy and big enough to share with the family! Great for special occasions. Always packed. Reservations recommended.

The stone delivery is an interesting concept. It seemed to work ok for the thick cuts of sirloin that are their standard. Ordered a ribeye and quickly realized I needed to cut it into a few large hunks and get it off the stone as quickly as possible, or have well done steak in minutes. Once that was done, the stone nicely heated up individual bites of not only steak but side veggies as well. Dipping sauce with steak is excellent. Not a good date night choice; you will both stink when dinner is over. Just a down side of meat searing at every table. The pretzel cheese appetizer was quite tasty and one order was plenty of appetizer for a table of four.

I love this place. Excellent food. Nice and clean as well (which is rare nowadays.). My husband and I dine here probably once or twice a month. I knocked off a star because I agree, they need better ventilation and I have had some sub - par service before. All I know is if you go during rush, they're great anywhere within 2 hours of closing and no good. (Service) worth the trip though. We drive 45 minutes to get here and with as cheap as I am I will splurge here! You should go and give this place a shot!

I received a gift card for Christmas and had heard good things from co-workers but read some bad reviews on here, so I was a little nervous. We went at 5 on a Friday night it wasn't very busy but my coworkers have said it gets slammed later. I had the ribeye on the stone with mashed potatoes and clam chowder. I enjoyed my whole meal very much. I do caution that even if you are normally "chilly" in a restaurant you won't be here :-) I loved the food and the fact my steak was perfect, because I cooked it, and hot off the stone :-) I would recommend this place and we will be back! Try it at least once and make your own decision :-)

I go to the u of M hospital every few months and we always treat ourselves to the Black Rock on our way home. We love it the steak is always cooked to perfection! We have always had top of the line wait service and enjoy the volcano sundae.

Have had the occasion to eat here twice, once on a gift certificate from friends and just two days ago as a dinner with my family before my son heads off to college. Would have to agree with most folks in that what you are paying for here is the novelty of the cooking experience as there is nothing truly spectacular about the food be it the steaks, ribs, shrimp or sandwiches. It's nice as a novelty experience, as it was for my mother and my son, but it is not a place I would frequent regularly, the prices just don't match the value received in quality or experience. Positives were the attentiveness of the staff, salads were fresh and the Blue Chese dressing was excellent, and the quantity of fries with my mother's panini was good,

Where do I start?? On May 20th, my husband and I celebrated our seven year wedding anniversary with dinner at this wonderful establishment. While the atmosphere was not what I had expected, (Yes, it is a bar & grill, however, the pricing screams higher scale establishment), I was insanely impressed. We started with salads (their vinaigrette is awesome) then we had the pretzel appetizer that came with two different types of cheese fondue to dip. So yum!!! I had the black rock red wine and it was delish! My husband's jack & coke was perfect! What followed our appetizer blew my mind! Seven years ago, on our honeymoon, I tried lobster at a red lobster in Indiana, it was awful and I swore off lobster. Well, I added a lobster tail to my steak at Black Rock and it was AMAZE BALLS!!!! I seriously LOVE lobster! My steak was amazing too!!! I will skip the asparagus next time and try the potatoes. We didn't have room for dessert, I don't know how anyone ever would! So much delicious food! However, I did entertain the idea of getting the apple pie. ;) We had amazing food & service at Black Rock! I want to go every weekend! :)

Get ready to pay a lot for doing everything your self. The waitstaff was very helpful tho on how to cook items on the rock. The resturant was very easy to find thankfully, but I would not bring a child due to the possibility of something bad happening if the rock fell or them touching the rock. Deff more of a date night place and atmosphere

Last night my husband and I had dinner at Black Rock because someone had recommended it to us. I pulled up the Yelp reviews and was a little skeptical and not sure since the reviews weren't so great..but my husband insisted so we went. It's not a bad place, nor is it a great place. It's quite pricey for mediocre food. The service was AWESOME and I highly recommend Chad. He's a good salesman and did make some good recommendations. He also took a bit of time explaining to us the whole Australian Volcanic Rock phenomenon. (LOTS of HYPE). So we started off with two appetizers. The Himalayian (sp) Shrimp on a Salt Rock...BLECH! It was just cold shrimp on a beautiful block of frozen salt. 6 little shrimp for $10....Quantity isn't my thing, but the flavor should have knocked my socks off or something...it was just plain old cold shrimp. We then had the Rock Wings with the Louisiana Sauce...so-so. The heat was mild, so very mild. I usually think of a bar, really getting the wings right, but these were okay. They were a little on the soggy side and on the cooler side (temperature) like they had been sitting out and waiting to be served. You get an ittty bitty lil' tiny thing of blue cheese. My husband ordered the Ahi Tuna (which I will never understand...we have a rule about ordering seafood from non-seafood establishments) It was bad! We're not sure if the filet itself was bad, or if cooking it on a damn hot rock made it bad...I have a hard time with raw food presenting itself at my table and me then having to cook it. I do that at home, so I don't want to do it when I go out...LOL The thing with this hot rock...the food continues to cook as long as it's on the rock..so his tuna became well done at some point..YUCK. It was served with a side of Asparagus and that was actually good. I ordered the Corned Beef Reuben Sandwich. It was very tasty. The corned beef was very lean and melted in my mouth. It's served with a huge portion of french fries. They were tasty too. Nice and crunch and hot. Chad recommended that I order the sandwich with coleslaw on it, rather than saurkraut...good recommendation. The sandwich is not huge, so if you're a guy looking for one of those big deli sandwiches... I also had a cup of Clam Chowder. The chowder was very very flavorful. Nice chunks of veggies, but seriously lacking in the clams. It was really more like a vegetable chowder. BUT, it was tasty. The sandwich and soup were worth the prices we paid. I think the appetizers and the Ahi Tuna were way over priced. The restaurant is very clean, lots of high energy. We arrived at 5 (we had reservations, highly recommend) and within a short bit, the place was full. When we left an hour and a half later, there was a line going out the door. Perhaps we will go back and try a steak on the volcanic rock, but I like my steaks rare and I don't see how that is possible on a rock that keeps cooking the food... Happy Eating!!!

over all good food and good service, but singer is too much. its too loud and its unfit for the restaurant and makes it hard to have conversations with others at the table.

I was a little put off about going here for the yelp reviews I mentioned it to them in a Facebook message. Much to my surprise, I was answered promptly! They touted their accolades and assured me I would not be disappointed. I wasn't! As a retired Chef I can get pretty picky. I did have friends that had been there and did like it. We decided to go! It was a Monday between Christmas and New Year. It was my daughters 20th birthday, so we were looking for something a bit special and different. We got it! I made a reservation for our party of 8. When we got there it was packed! I was so glad I planned ahead. The air was thick with the smell of sizzling steaks and it smelled good. I can understand somebody who might not like it as they reviewed. Maybe they were there when it was a down time and it was a bit stale? It made me salivate. We were promptly seated at a banquette in the middle of the room. It was loud and fun. Our waiter greeted us immediately upon sitting down. We were still waiting for 3 more at the time and took our drink order. It did take a tad longer to get the beer, he apologized and said the bar was backing up. Ok, It happens. When it came time to order, we ordered the 12 OZ. Special steak.... They were out of that size so we upgraded to the larger one. It was huge! Only complaint, Raw meat cuts easier with a sharp knife. The serrated steak knife works fine for cooking meat, but difficult with raw. My friend's daughter ordered off the children's menu, it was the first time something has to to the table looking even better than the photo! Kudo's for that. I did change my order 1/2 way through. The salad came with a very unappetizing dressing on the side with a very strange texture. I asked to upgrade to the French onion soup and it was delicious and I am happy I did. In all. I would not hesitate to go back. The hot rock assured that every bite was hot. It also made for heating leftovers better. The service was exemplary! The manager dropped by a few times to make sure all was well. The food was tasty. Not too expensive if you wanted it to be. They had nice looking sandwiches and appetizers. We all ended up with pretty much the same thing. If you are all going to order the hot Rock cooking make sure you save a bit of extra elbow room. They passed out free dessert coupons at the end to say Happy New year to all of the tables that night for when we come back. That means a 12 dollar dessert!! (Wow) But it looks like it is made for at least 4 people. A big brownie Sunday as well as other options. Downside, a bit crowded trying to cut and cook your steak, especially mixing lefty's in :). Thank you.

Met friends here while back in MI for the holidays. There was available seating at 4:30 on a Saturday night, but it quickly filled up and had plenty of a wait by 6:00. Staff was great and ready to fill your glass or grab anything you needed. TV's are everywhere you can see, but atmosphere is well above a typical sports bar. Plenty of choices of local MI brews on tap as well as other domestic and imports (Boddingtons!!!). I started with the large crock of onion soup. This was just ok and far from the best I have had. It lacked depth in flavor, onions were undercooked, was not hot enough to melt the cheese or even burn my mouth, which is typically how hot I prefer my soup. My entree was the bourbon salmon and it was fairly good. The fish had good flavor, but lacked the buttery texture of better salmon. Our friends had the steak on the rock and a foot long monster of a hot dog with jambalaya sauce on it. The steak on the 750 degree stone is a novel idea and was tender seasoned well. The dog was wrapped in pizza dough and our friend enjoyed it, but the the sauce was a little spicier than she expected. All in all Black Rock is just ok. The entrees are not better than average. The atmosphere is nice and staff are great. Before moving out of MI I had been to Black Rock for drinks and appetizers a few times...I would be back for just that and not likely a full dinner.

I have been to Black Rock Bar and Grill twice since Christmas with different friends. We went for a late lunch on both occasions. We were seated right away and had wonderful service both times. On both occasions we ordered and shared a variety of appetizers, burgers, and sandwiches. We all had good food. I highly recommend the Bubbling Shrimp on a Stone, Mussels Martini, and the Halloumi Caprese Bruschetta as appetizers. All three were delicious and full of flavor. We also had the french onion soup and it was hot and tasty. The burgers and fries were all cooked as ordered and came out hot and delicious as well. Our drinks were never empty, the table was cleared in a timely manner, and we all felt that the food was good. I have been to Black Rock for dinner as well. I have had the filet of ribeye, ahi tuna, and scallops. All three dinners were delicious. It should be stated that the menu does tell you that the kitchen can and will prepare your meat for you in the kitchen if you do not want to cook it yourself at the table. We were well informed by our server on how to place the meat off the stone to avoid overcooking. The sauces were all great and did a wonderful job complimenting all of the meat. The Black Rock Volcano was a great dessert for sharing!!!! We are looking forward to the new Novi location!!!!!!

The Picky Gourmet ate here on a recent Saturday night. The place is obviously popular because both times I've been here it's been packed. I ordered the Signature Black Rock for $16.99 which is a nice chunk of center cut sirloin. I decided to cook my own steak on the rock and it was great. The steak was tasty, well-seasoned and tender. It was exactly what I was looking for. My wife had the same cut only had the kitchen cook it and it came out exactly as she ordered, medium well. Again, it was delicious. I highly recommend using the butter they give you for dipping your slices of meat into because it really adds to the flavor of the steak. A quick note here for those who don't know if they can "cook" their own steak. Simply ask the staff to bring you a second plate. Place the raw steak on there and do what I do, slice a couple pieces, cook them in just a minute or so, put them over to the side of your other plate to cool and cook a couple more. That way the entire steak doesn't get overdone, you're not rushed and you have it YOUR way. The Service was professional and attentive despite it being a very busy Saturday night. The downside...the asparagus soup was lukewarm and had the consistency of yogurt - in other words, way too thick. It could also have used some seasoning or something. It just didn't have any taste. My wife had to borrow my rock to warm up the pieces of asparagus that came with her meal because, again, they were almost cold. The garlic potatoes that came with my meal were ok, but obviously had come straight of the micro - they were still steaming at the end of dinner. Overall, for our second trip the steak was excellent, but this place can and should do better so they better meet expectations. There is obviously a big market for a steakhouse in this area. Now it's time to work on the rest of the pieces here.

I was a little apprehensive after reading a few yelp reviews but I'm glad my party and I decided to still go. The steak was excellent. Yes, cooking on the stone was cool but I could see how the novelty of cooking your own food could wear off but we all enjoyed it. It was a very busy Friday but still had great service. Good beer selection, cool atmosphere, and good food... We'll be back.

If I could give it 4.5, I would. We ate there November 22, 2013 and had a very enjoyable meal. Our waiter, RJ, was entertaining and really well trained. He knew how things were prepared with eloquent descriptions. We started with the Lobster Bisque soup with a real lobster claw placed in it. The soup was flavorful and spicy with plenty of crab. My dining partner didn't like the pieces of tomato and onion in the broth, but I did. Our salad was nothing special but well plated and generous. I had the house dressing, a sugary creamy dressing that was to sweet as a taste but went well on the salad in moderation. My son and I had the 10 ounce signature steak for 16.99 which was more than enough food. My husband had a the rib eye which was more expensive but no more tender or tasty than my steak. I recommend sticking to a budget and splurging elsewhere on the menu. The steak sauce that accompanied the meat was rich and very tasty. I even enjoyed it with my cold steak leftovers. I had a baked sweet potato that was generous in size but a bit watery. My husband had the fries which were cooked well, seasoned, and a generous portion. My son enjoyed most of a large baked potato. We did not partake of dessert, but may take a special trip for just that. Walking around, we saw many delicious looking options including the Pretzel and Cheese Fondue on the Stone. I would take away a .5 star because we ate across from the bar and it was very noisy with all the televisions and bar patrons. WHEN we dine there again, we will ask to be in the Wine Room where it is much quieter. With all the patrons grilling their own steak on the black rocks, there was a haze of smoke in the room. We did have to wait for a table longer than the hostess said we would wait and where we sat, we continued to feel a cold breeze as the patrons came and went. Overall, great food and potentially great atmosphere if we sat at a different table.

Very nice place. The Kobe Steak was tender and mouthwatering. Add the scallops for an even better treat. Take the zip sauce with any entree. Mashed potatoes were ok. The Angry orchard beer is fantastic, AND they have root beer on tap.

Went in on the Friday night before Valentines Day, and the place was super packed! We waited at the bar for a good 30 minutes and had a couple of drinks. The drinks were over priced and under appealing, but the bartender was nice and attentive. We got to our table, and I have to say I am NOT a big fan of the seating style. One side is a long bench, with individual 2 or 4 person tables, and chairs on the other side. WAY too close to my neighbors (one of whom was just flat out annoying) for me. Everyone around us seemed to be ordering the steak which is served on a very hot black rock and cooks as you cut and prepare it yourself. Good concept, but from the looks of the steaks around us it was lacking in execution. If you're going to a restaurant to get a steak because they can cook it better than you, then don't order the steak here! I was convinced I could do a better job with better cuts of beef on my own grill, so we opted for the stuffed cheddar & bacon burger, medium rare, fries (regular, the sweet potato fries smelled way too strongly of cinnamon), a cup of clam chowder, and calamari. The clam chowder came first, and it was OK. Nothing special, and I'm not sure it had any clams in it. It was at least warm. OK, so I'm a clam chowder snob, sue me! The calamari came and was luke warm smothered in peppers, and with an odd texture to the breading. Even with the dipping sauces, it didn't make my top 50 for calamari. Then came the burgers. I loved the buns! Grilled & buttery, looking good so far...until the bite. Then it pegged down to average. The meat was overcooked, which I assume the have to do to melt the cheese, which in itself was pretty good (I love that cheddar!). The fries were average as well. All in all, pretty average I guess you could say. I can't see myself returning. If I'm going to drive that much, I know I can find better. The only saving grace was that I got to spend the evening with my Sweetie!

It can be very busy and very loud. The drinks can be pricey too. The food is fantastic. I had the fried asparagus and it was delicious. I had to come back and order it again. The center cut sirloin was fantastic. I chose to cook my own on the stone. I had a great cut of meat and could cook it the way I wanted. It helped the meat stay nice and fresh as I ate. I like my steak on the rare side and normally the meat would get cold after being brought to the table. Since they offer a stone it keeps everything warm. It's a great experience with great food. Their signature zip sauce I love. I know they don't call it zip sauce but, that's what I call it. I will be going back.

Awesome food! Busy place, good service, couldn't find any negatives. Very tasty meat especially since I cooked it! :-) Tried the fried asparagus was tasty too. Next time going for filet. Wish it was located closer to home. Here in Ann Arbor on business and definitely will go again this week.

Found this place yesterday (04/01/12) on our way from Livonia to just north of Flint. I couldn't be happier with the accidental discovery! I love the concept of cooking the steak yourself at the table. For those wondering, you do not have to do so. They do offer to have the cooks take care of your steak exactly as you want it prepared. I think cooking it yourself really adds to the experience and we had a great time with it. The food itself was great and priced about what I expect from a place like this. We had excellent service from the moment we walked in the door until the moment we left. We both tried different cuts of steak but I would love to toy with other options during our next visit which will happen very soon!

The restaurant is rather cold. The staff however, is rather hot. Male and female. Just sayin'. Their smiles, demeanor, and enthusiasm for the restaurant shine brightly The wood and stone decor have both a modern and classic feel. Elements never go out of style. We sat in the 'Wine Room' in a comfortable booth with good lighting over each table Salad and coleslaw look and taste good. +1. Served on warm plates though!? -1. Three of us ordered the Black Rock steak. Although I felt a bit pressured to cut, cook and eat the steak without messing up, the results were fantastic. I would go again.

Well the decor was very trendy with custom painted concrete floor, open ceiling, dark brown wood and ledge rock accented walls too many hard surfaces, very loud. The bar was nice with ample seating including small booths. From this point on it isn't as pleasant. First we were seated in a (as described in an earlier review) a seating area that has a common bench across from chairs, too close to the next tables. The air conditioning was so cold we asked to be moved and were seated in the "banquet room" as the hostess complained as well that the whole place is freezing. We were greeted by our server with a smile and was told the specials of the day were among three items a "Kobe" steak that was the same price as their regular steak, well Kobe beef is running online for $499.99 for a 10 oz. filet so I don't think they are selling Kobe beef here, so don't mislead people that you are! The food; I had a Granola Apple salad that had an apple vinaigrette dressing. The chicken on the salad was cold and I think boiled at some point because it had no taste which went with the rest of the salad and the dressing. I actually tasted the dressing by itself and it tasted like vegetable oil only. I had to look for the apple as it was cut up so small I thought it was celery. The French Onion soup looked impressive but was loaded with salt. Now the kicker, my wife's dinner was the "Sampler", included a small steak, two shrimp and two scallops on a 750 degree "Black Rock" that she had to cut everything up in pieces and finish cooking on a five inch square slab that was full of salt. Well both of us thought it was way too much work to end up with something that you completed at varying degrees of doneness because you were trying to eat and cook before the stone got cool. In summary my wife had glass of wine, I had a glass of water and came to $45.00. Try it for yourself if you want but not a great experience

Gorgeous place with a nice atmosphere. The shiraz I had was good. I was asked by our server if I wanted a 2nd glass of wine. I said yes, but not right now, wanted to finish my app, cleanse the pallette (spelling?) And try the cabernat. Another shiraz was brought over instead without any other conversation. Had fried asparagus for app, yummy! Lobster bisque, good but salty. Husband got the Rock Dog, footlong hotdog wrapped in pizza dough with prime rib, zip sauce, cheese and onions DELICIOUS! He chose coleslaw over fries DOUBLE DELISH! I had Blue Cheese stuffed burger. Mediocre, COULD NOT TASTE THE BLUE CHEEEEEEESE! Huge onion and tomato that completely dominated the taste of it. Fries looked great but on the soggy side. Will go back for my own Rock Dog but only if it's on my way.

Over-rated and over-priced. If I'm going to pay that much for a steak - I want a chef to prepare it. The novelty of the hot rock wears off quickly when you realize if you don't take the steak off quickly you'll end up with it well done. Also be prepared for how hot the room gets with all the steaming rocks. I'd wear short sleeves even in the winter. And know that you'll be tossing your clothes in the washer ASAP as you come home smelling like cooked beef! Steaks are descent, doping sauces good, sides and apps okay. But again - there are better steak places out there for equal to less costs.

The Black Rock steak and sweet potato fries were excellent. I would say skip the calamari. The batter used on the calamari tasted like pure flour, , consistency of calamari was interesting, this was the worst I have had and I order it almost everywhere. The waitstaff was friendly and the restaurant had a nice interior, it was loud but I could still carry on a conversation with my husband. A nice surprise was the band that played towards the end of our visit. I would recommend the steaks you cook at your table. I would like to visit this place again.

We tried this place out tonight. We were in around 4 p.m., there were quite a few people in there for that time of day, so that was promising. Our server was very very nice, and recommended the steak. Because of the prices, we were inclined to order one steak and split it, we ordered a $19.99 New York with baked potato and asparagus. The steak is good. It comes just browned on one side on a hot granite slab with some seasoned butter and their own steak sauce. Once my husband got over the fact that we had to cook our own steak to our liking, he agreed that the steak tasted pretty good. The baked potato was standard and the asparagus was listless, but the steak itself, I enjoyed a lot. I really hope this place makes it, the employees seem to be really enthusiastic and I'm hoping that they find a groove and stick around so I don't have to drive to Brighton for a good steak all the time. Another interesting point, a big TV showing football in the women's bathroom. I was so surprised to see it that I stepped back outside to make sure that I was not in the men's room. If I ever walk in there and see a bunch of women watching football in the bathroom, I'll be amazed. It amused me :)

We came to Black Rock Grille last night to celebrate my husband's 30th birthday. We had heard a bit about what to experience from friends, but were mostly in the dark, beyond the "cooked on the rock" theme. The greet staff was professional, and beyond a 5 minute wait from our reservation time, (this was a Saturday night) we were seated quickly. Our server was very prompt with our drink orders and we didn't need to ask for any refills. The pretzels and cheese appetizers were delicious, and the hot stone the cheese dips were served on kept the dips pipping hot. We got the original 12oz Black Rock sirloin steak as our entrees and the servers were very knowledgeable and helpful in using the stones to cook the steaks to perfection! I've never had a steak that was "like butter", before this one! As the grand finale, we got the chocolate volcano for dessert and it absolutely lives up to the name! The value of the meal for the price was reasonable: for 2 people, 2 beverages (no alcohol), 1 appetizer, and 2 steaks (another member of our group of 8 paid for the dessert) ended up right around $50 before tip. We will definitely be back for future birthday and special occasion dinners! Thank you to the staff for a wonderful experience!!

My mother-in-law was excited to take us to the Black Rock Grill while we visited over Christmas, telling us that it was great that good restaurants were finally opening up in her area. She was particularly effusive about the burger she had on a previous visit. We arrived and were seated quickly despite them appearing to be busy - I think we lucked out on a larger table for our group of 6 while other smaller groups had to wait a little while for tables. There really isn't much ambience to this place - there are TVs everywhere, not just on the walls but also hanging over the tables - and their lighting designer should be fired - they had bright spotlights pointing directly down onto the tables. With the rock on the walls and floor, plus the low grade tables and seats, it made it look more like a dark-floored cafeteria than an upscale restaurant. Our server was friendly enough but spent a lot of time trying to sell us on their steaks. Since we had eaten steak at home the night before, we were keen to try out other parts of their menu, particularly the burgers my mother-in-law had recommended so highly. However, the hard sell did not end - the owner even came over and spent an awkward 10 minutes leaning over our table trying to convince us to try their steaks. He only left when one of our group finally agreed to try the steak. The entrees arrived after about 20 minutes, which felt like a long time and were mostly as ordered - some extra bacon ordered with one of the burgers was not delivered until the diner was about halfway through their meal. Everything was just OK. The steak looked thick and juicy and the person who ordered it said it was tasty enough, though not spectacular, but that they would order it again. The burgers, which all came stuffed with their "toppings" were mediocre. The blue cheese burgers barely came with any cheese inside and we had to ask for more to sprinkle on top. When tasted alone, it was clear that the issue was very bland blue cheese that had almost not flavor. The bacon and cheese stuffed burger had more obvious evidence of the toppings but nothing that really made it stand out. All of the burgers were cooked to medium well, a disappointment for me since I like my burgers medium rate. The burgers came with fries which seemed double cooked - like they had been cooked once and then thrown back into the fryer to be reheated. This left them pretty limp, a bit greasy and lacking in that fresh fry taste. Overall, this wasn't the worst meal I've had in this area. But I really don't think they delivered on their idea of an "upscale dining experience" and the hard sell on the steaks left a bad taste in my mouth. Even my mother-in-law agreed!

Yay, for Hartland getting a fine dinning restaurant! It's nice to see this middle class community get a steak house. The steak is pretty good, but don't bother ordering anything but the black rock steak, because it's the best thing on the menu. The one big problem they seem to have is getting their sides together and seasoning their meat. The sides are CONSTANTLY and CONSISTENTLY cold and under-seasoned. Perhaps the owner should go over to Capital Grille in Troy and steal some ideas for new sides and get some advice on how to keep them HOT.

Black Rock Grill decor was trendy and appropos to the name of the restaurant. Black Rock faux stone, stamped concrete floors and a dozen tvs. The bar area is separated from the dining room by a glass partition attached to the banquettes. The lighting is darkish. The menu consists mostly of red meat that you cook on a stone at your table. It is half cooked in the kitchen and then you finish it off after the waiter turns if over in front of you. Our waiter Per is a wonderful server, knowledgeable and adept that sets a nice tone for your dinner. On a recent Sunday afternoon we had the onion soup, the steak sampler with shrimp and scallops, and the fire cracker chicken. We felt that the seasoning on the soup was not as full bodied and didn't have depth of flavours to it. The cut of meat was not the best we've enjoyed. The fire cracker chicken served with rice and grilled vegetables was good. The value for the money is not the best, in fact we found it to be pricey for the quality of the food. This is a popular spot in our neck of the woods.

After reading the existing reviews and hearing from others, we decided to give the Black Rock a try. I can confirm the reviews of others that this is not a seafood restaurant. So, if you're looking for fresh, not farm raised, properly cooked fish, this is not the place for you. Someone in our party tried the salmon, and said it tasted like it was frozen before prepared and tasted to soft, not meaty. I read the review about the meat being overcooked, and thought, how can that be? You're cooking your own meat, right? Well, it comes already on the hot stone plate, with no extra plate, so it just keeps cooking as you cut and eat it off the stone plate. Not good for those you enjoy rare or medium rare. And, if you're in a booth, the 2-3 hot stone plates will make you feel like you're in a sauna, and the stone smokes as your food cooks, so it's like sitting too close to a bon-fire. You may smell smokey after your eating experience. Bottom line: Expensive, crowded (no room to spread out), need to order your meat on a separate plate so you can put it on the stone when you're ready to cook it in pieces. The filet is a nice cut of meat, if you can find a way to cook it to your temperature and keep it there.
