This obscure Mexican grocery store is directly across from La Fiesta and, what it lacks restaurant ambience, it more than makes up for in food quality and value. We fed 5 people for $35 (including tip) and every one of us raved about our selections. The tacos are make simply: double soft corn tortillas with meat, chopped onion and cilantro; the sauces run from 2 alarm to 5 alarm, so choose according to your heat tolerance. The guacamole was outstanding and the chips fresh and lighter than most. My father-in-law's tostada was excellent. The point of this place is that their primary clientele is the hispanic community that comprises the bulk of the migrant labor pool in the area, so the food is authentic and priced to be affordable. The seating area is in the back and the trip is well worth your time!

Dang this place was good. As a gringo from West Michigan whose exposure to Mexican food growing up was hard shell tacos courtesy of Old El Paso or Ortega, I don't feel like I have a very good grasp of what's authentic Mexican food. That being said, this place felt like I was truly eating a meal in a restaurant in Mexico. There were cinder block walls, cement floors, a hodge-podge of tables and chairs, Mexican Coke, and a Spanish language channel on the TV. I'll admit, it is a little bit awkward walking through the grocery store to get back to the actually restaurant, but don't let that stop you, it's absolutely worth it. The wait staff spoke English and was very helpful in deciding what to get. I ended up with a burrito and a gordita, which were easily both the best I've had. My little girls both got quesadillas and even those were spectacular. I don't know what was in there, but they were fantastic. I highly recommend stopping in next time you're in Hart.

If you are looking for authentic Mexican food you have found the place! Guacamole made to order, cactus, beef, pork and chicken! For the more adventurous they have beef tongue and menudo ( spelling??). I recommend the torta and ceviche ! Others have said the chicken is nothing special so stick with beef, pork, cactus or shrimp. And of course the corn on the cob with whatever they put on it is amazing!

If you like authentic Mexican food this is the place for you. The food counter is located in the back of a Mexican grocery store. The guacamole is the best in west Michigan. We have tried the tacos, gorditas, burritos and tamales so far. Everything has been fantastic! Our family will be making the trip here over and over again.

We visited here solely on word-of-mouth recommendations from at least four local people. I must say the food was really good and the staff was very friendly. The place needs some work though as other people have not eaten here because of appearance (and why aren't the lights on?) It is definitely better food than the Mexican restaurant across the street...

Absolutely wonderful!!!! Fresh ingredients & the best guacamole I have ever had. Try it, you won't be sorry!

Very good and authentic! We had the beef Burrito and a beef taco. Both were very tasty. The dinning room is not fancy but the food is a real treasure. We will definitely be going again and I can't wait to try different dishes.

Fantastic authentic Mexican food. The tacos, beans and rice are incredible. Mexican food is always the best when found in the back of a Mexican grocery store. I come here every chance I get when in the Hart area.

Favorite restaurant in Oceana County. The food is incredibly authentic. I usually order chicken tacos, but recently I've branched out to try their chicken tostadas. They were absolutely fantastic. Highly recommend.

Always good! Authentic, grandma's Mexican food. no cc/debit cards in the back though so be prepared. Grocery in front has real Mexican baked goods and good selection of authentic food. I have tried almost all the menu items and they are all equally good but my fav is the Torta, a sandwich item.

Do not be intimidated by the store front-head to the back for the best authentic Mexican you've ever had. Very reasonably priced. We took ours to go and ate at some picnic tables across the street overlooking the water. So so good- we will be back.

As good as authentic Mexican gets. Reminds me of a tiendita in Baja. I got the gorditas (asada and al pastor) and they were next level. Thanks for lunch!

This place is that "hole-in-the-wall" restaurant everyone looks for while traveling but never seems to find--with amazing food! This place operates as a grocery store up front, but the real treasure is the restaurant in the back. I ordered a chicken burrito and a chicken taco, and they both were fantastic. I love it when places make their own sauces, and this place has terrific salsa, and a couple other hot pepper sauces. They aren't afraid to go heavy on the cilantro in their food, so if you're like my girlfriend and can't eat it, make sure to ask for them to leave it off. Also my girlfriend ordered a cactus tostada(yes, that's a thing) and one of the cooks overdid her onions and cilantro topping. Once the head guy(who originally designed the dish) saw it, he gave us our money back for it. Despite this mistake I think it showed how passionate this guy is about getting his dishes right. A true gem as a traveler who's been all over the U.S.

These are the places you eat that you would never dream of stopping at. This is DDD style right here. This eatery is in the back of a Mexican grocery store that you would never think of eating at. You grab your drink right from the coolers in the store and then head back to the counter to order your food. They have it all and it is all authentic. We have been here 3 times and have loved it each time. The food is fresh and cooked to order. The dining atmosphere would scare many people off but we find it to add to the experience. The tables are plastic card tables and a mix of folding chairs and such to sit in. They have great sauces and bring you your food once you order it. Every time we have been here, there is a steady flow of locals coming through and eating. So far everything we have had is great. The tostadas are amazing as well as their tacos. Give it a try and don't be scared. They also have an array of Mexican desserts and sweet breads at the grocery counter in the front. Take some dessert home.

We recently got a place outside of Hart, and have been exploring the area for good eats. I was very sad and surprised at how bad La Fiesta is, given how large the Mexican population is in the area, but then I found out the secret! If you want REAL Mexican food, that's fresh, delicious, and affordable, you want La Probadita! Tucked in the back of a Mexican-specialty grocery is a small lunch counter, surrounded by folding tables and chairs. There's no decor to speak of (although there's a TV, which was showing a Copa America soccer match while we were there), and no frills. If you want a drink, you get it from the grocery, and bring it to the counter - which is actually kind of awesome, as they have so many traditional and unusual favors of sodas to try. The menu is extensive and VERY reasonable, and everything is made right there by hand, with fresh meats and produce - right down to the tortillas. The guy in charge brought chips and an assortment of sauces that were so good I even bought a little tub of one to bring home! I had steak fajitas and my husband had a steak burrito and neither of us could finish it all. The food came with fresh avocado, no extra charge, and the guy brought us a huge thing of sour cream, not one of those dinky little bowls you get elsewhere, also no charge. Afterwards, we got a couple coconut polices from the grocery and sat and ate them while watching the soccer on the tv and relaxing. Our final bill for two, with drinks and dessert, and a tub of salsa to take home? $24. We will DEFINITELY be back, and encourage everyone to give this hidden little gem a try!

Great food for great prices. I'm not big on Mexican food, but I LOVE their tacos. We get lunch there just about every Friday.

The food was really REALLY good. The wait was really REALLY long. They comped us our meal because of the long wait, which was a nice thing to do. Tough call on going back, as the food was so good. I think I would give it another shot. I had a chicken botana and my wife had a chicken burrito and both were delicious. The salsa was also amazing.

When come to rating a restaurant, I would either not to rate or rate it well. This place deserves a very nice rating because you will not find such an authentic Mexican restaurant around. All foods are reasonably priced. I HIGHLY recommend it!

Food was 4 stars, but it shouldn't take 45 minutes to get 3 tacos. Chips were store bought (they claimed they had run out of the homemade ones, but the table next to us got the "real" chips after us), and the food was good, not great... average taqueria quality in Chicago or Mexicantown Detroit.

Just went in there for the first time. The grocery in the front has a great selection. My daughter and I went in to see what everyone is raving about in the back... the wonderful smells hit you first. My daughter asked about meatless foods. The gentleman behind the counter asked her if she had ever tried cactus. She hadn't so he fixed her up a plate with a nice serving of what looked like cactus nachos-- for free! We had a carryout order and I just finished my roast beef tacos. Very very good. Everyone loved the food. We are definitely going back!!!

Absolutely delicious every time I go there. Three favorites in order are #1- Fajita Gorditas w/jalapeño, #2- Tortas w/ Fajita meat ( this is a sandwich style meal with a bun toasted on the grill) #3- Tacos with Fajita meat and jalapeño. All these are delicious, all can come with grilled onions, sandwich(Tortas) comes with guacomole, Cannot go wrong!!!! Max B. ( frequent flyer)

Authentic Mexican food. Hole in the wall grocery store/restaurant but worth a try if you like Mexican food. Don't expect the usual dumbed down Americanized food you're use to. This is the real deal.

This place is simply amazing. I live in D.C. and there isn't a single good Mexican in the city -- if you want authentic, this is IT. The cactus tacos are to die for and the owner is happy to oblige other vegetarian orders, which isn't always the case in Western Michigan. We went 2 nights in a row during spring break and La Probadita will be our summer mainstay for sure.

So glad we found this little secret of a restaurant because it has to be the best Mexican food in Michigan or at least our area. Always great service and can't beat the prices for a well home cooked meal somewhere. Always go at least once a month.

These guys are truly amazing. Great food at low prices. They make their own gordita's, the marinated pork is my favorite. The cafeteria style set up is a little funky, but regardless, totally worth the experience. When there are no tables left, I do carry out and walk across the street to Hart commons and eat by the lake;-)

Great food! I had two tacos - one barbacoa and one de lengua. Both were cooked and seasoned well. Their chips were light and salty and the hardest parts to get right - rice and bean - were perfect. The atmosphere is not much and I saw no signage - it's in the back of a grocery store - but it does the important things right!

We showed up on a Monday night, but they were closed. Yet when in town for business on Tuesday we wondered in and were amazed. Its both a grocery store and restaurant. Goya products galore! Then for lunch, we got some tacos, tamales, and gorditas. THEY WERE AMAZING. Tasted so fresh, light. Family owned place, always have soccer playing on the TV. Its the real deal and a great anchor business in Downtown Hart.

What a find! We drove past it once before we realized that it's inside the nondescript Mexican grocery store with the white-green-red awning, across the street from La Fiesta. It's totally simple, with five four-tops and half a dozen counter seats sitting at the back of the grocery store. The food is cooked up right behind the counter and it was, in a word, AMAZING! Holy Molé, Batman! This is the real thing! At the suggestion of the extremely kind and helpful waiter, we had gorditas, made fresh, with various beef and pork fillings. With their classic onion and cilantro accompaniment, they were *superb*. Our son gobbled up his chicken quesadilla with gusto. Chips and salsa at the table were joined by three squeeze bottles of additional delicious hot sauces, so no lack of choice there. All were outstanding. They sell the salsa from the chips & salsa plate in the grocery store in front, so you can take some home, too! You could also find about 30 additional hot sauces up at the counter, in case you have a favorite. Ice water was complimentary, with drinks all bottled from self-serve coolers - lots of excellent Mexican import choices there (can you say mango soda?). Menu choices are up on a white board, and the staff is happy to help you sort it all out. I have to underscore that the staff were all wonderfully kind and helpful. For the amazing authentic meal they provided, it was not at all pricey. The three of us ate ourselves full for less than $20. If you are in or near Hart, you really owe it to yourself to stop in for a meal. It was Delicious!!!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
