This is nothing more than a Chi-Chi's knockoff. Authentic Mexican? I think not. The puff quesadilla I had was a joke. I ordered my own with veggies. It came like a puff taco with very little veggies. Authentic Mexicanas wouldnt eat here in million.

The staff and service here is exceptional. Unfortunately, the food is horrible it tastes like lard and butter. They earned one star from me because the Margarita was tasty.

I've been going to El Charro for most of my life and the first thing I have to say is if you're looking for authentic Mexican food this IS NOT the place for you. That being said, if you're looking for unique Mexican inspired food you should give this place a shot just for their unique soft shelled tacos. I am not a fan of soft shelled tacos but El Charro's has a unique "puffy" corn taco that's soft and chewy without being doughy like a flour tortilla and isn't hard like a regular corn taco. I've never had anything like them anywhere else. These tacos get mixed reviews but I can understand being disappointed if you're expecting plain old boring tacos that anyone can make. If you know what to expect, these tacos are delicious, ground beef being my favorite. They also come in fish or chicken. The cheese fondue is also another favorite of mine, although I'm not in love with their salsa and chips. But I'm not going their for salsa or chips. I've been to three locations and they have the same standard across the board and I am never disappointed. They are consistently good and I've never had a bad meal here. After trying three locations I decided that the Fraser one is my favorite, although the menus are the same, for some reason this location offers a side salad or small nacho with every meal. The others don't and for that reason alone we always eat in Fraser. The food is just as good at the other locations unless you want a salad then you're out of luck.

This restaurant has probably been a part of my life longer than McDonalds. Their ground beef is perfect. You wouldn't guess it, but they have the most satisfying french onion soup, unbeatable. Tortilla soup is another honorable mention. It's not chicken tortilla, but it's also not vegetarian, it has a chicken broth base, so refreshing with a kick of spice. And saving the best for last, the Botana. Nothing beats a meat and bean botana, when I was younger I would eat the entire thing just out of lack of restraint. The only reason that I can't give 5 stars is that El Charro fails to change with time. The great items are always going to be great but there are a lot of menu items that should be updated. Like fresh ingredient tacos and burritos full of cilantro and fresh cut vegetables and some kind of great sauce to tie it all together.

This is not authentic mexican food. I'm not sure it's even tex-mex. Lets call it ameri-mexican. But it scratches an itch in a very tasty way. The puffy tacos are kinda like a pupusa made a little larger and filled by folding into a taco instead of cutting into it and sandwiching the filling. They are extremely filling. The shredded beef is the way to go here, and the cheese crisps are fantastic in an almost grilled cheese kind of way. They are great for take-out as well. They give a fair amount of chips and salsa to accompany the entrees

I used to come to this restaurant as a teenager/early twenty something gal and I haven't been in at least 10 years. Well..I feel things have gone downhill since then. I ordered the liter of Sangria. I was advised that I could not order this just for myself, I indeed had to share this with someone. I told the waitress that I could clearly drink this just by myself and my table mates agreed. A friend offered to share and I advised the waitress that we would be ordering another of these. I then chose the Mahi tacos. The Mahi was overcooked-someone else thought it tasted like chicken. The taco shells were these greasy, puffy, chewy things that were disgusting. I choked down one and left the other 2 for the waitress to take. The beans and rice were on the tiniest of side plates, they were good but not very much of it ($13.99 for that mess). I got my bill and the liter of Sangria was $25.00!! What in the...I could get a bottle of that at the local Kroger for $8.00. What a rip off... I won't be back anytime soon

Slop. Just plain sloppy, flavorless "Mexican food" with no soul. Huge portions of cheap ingredients, "unique soft shell tacos" which have no flavor, just a puffy grease ball. Guac was good and tasted fairly fresh but wasn't spectacular as most decent Mexican places make tableside. Meats needed a spice rack. I frankly don't see why so many east siders are so possesive and obsessive with this place. It's fits the bill for a cheap, blah Mexican place that will fill you up, leave you leftovers and kid friendly but I jsut don't get the mass appeal. Service was very nice although not the msot prompt - however our group was there later on Sunday night so it's understandable that they were in process of closing up, etc.

If I could pick one meal to eat prior to my death this would be the one. I do not ask for anything fancy - their tacos are the best I have ever had. I have been eating their tacos for over 30 years and they haven't changed in quality. My brother lives and Mexico and still claims the best tacos he ever had were from El Charro's. When we come to the area from Chicago my wife and son want to come here: every other restaurant is optional but we MUST make it to El Charro. Thankfully my family in the area also loves this place and we can always find a way to eat here. For those who do not like Mexican food - the options are limited but they are OK. For those who like Mexican your perceptions about tacos will forever change.

I'm sorry to say: It was awful. Just awful. The food? On a scale from 1 - 10? Maybe a 3. The Waitstaff? Again, maybe a 3. The decor? Atmosphere? Again, maybe a 3. My family and I are usually satisfied, easy going and generous. This experience really baffled us. We weren't angry. Just sad to think that was the best they could do. The words - Tired and Worn Out- come to mind for a description of El Charro

My husband and I went to El Charro last night for dinner. We were in the mood for Mexican and decided to try a new place instead of going to our usual (Pancho Villa's on 15 & Ryan). We were HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED. The chips and salsa came out and unbeknownst to us, that was going to be the best part of our meal. I ordered a frozen margarita and it started sweet but ended up very sour and almost impossible to finish. My husband ordered the combo plate which came with a tostada, their soft taco, a burrito and an enchilada. You could only have 1 meat on that entire combo and he chose ground beef. I ordered the wet burrito with chicken. Service was fine - nothing bad, nothing exceptional. The combo was quite large and looked appetizing but between the fact that it was all ground beef and it was almost TASTELESS, there was no hope for that meal. My wet burrito came out and it was WORSE. I had to douse it in the hot salsa to get some resemblance of taste. Considering we tried 2 kinds of their meats between a number of the entree options, we felt we had enough of an experience to say "never again". Don't bother going to this restaurant if you're looking to actually taste your food.

ElCharro is my meeting spot with friends whenever I am in the area. Our favorites include the cheese fondue, avocado cheese crisp, botana, super wet burrito, tacos, and enchiladas. The wait staff is always very attentive and always refilling our chips and salsa- it's so good. The margaritas are the best around- try the swirl or Wildberry. I love their outside patio, too!

  • ANN D.

Requested grilled chicken in place of ground beef on my dish and they absolutely refused! Unbelievable that a restaurant can't make a substitution - this was not about cost as I offered to pay for grilled chicken - they just would not do it. Not sure if the kitchen didn't know how to cook it or the manager was too dumb to figure out what to charge. Our waitress was great - and confused by the managers response as well.

First time coming here and it was delicious. The atmosphere is typical middle class suburbia with mostly old people and golf guys who try to act young. Service was excellent and margaritas are top notch. The beer selection is surprisingly up to speed and has local craft beers available. I had the super wet chicken burrito and the sauce on it was phenomenal. The hot salsa is way better than the mild and the chips were okay but a little stale. I can't wait to bring some friends here for margarita night and people watching.

I really like this place but, today I got some seafood nachos (haven't had them in a while) and I was not impressed. Even though their nachos don't exactly look like nachos but more like a tostada, today it wasn't even cut up. Tiny side of pico came with it and it was basically two shells stuffed with imitation crab meat and some cheese on the shells. Not impressed.

A group of co workers and I went to El Charro for dinner. On a Friday night the restaurant was hopping. There was a huge wait in the lobby. After eating here, I'm not sure why. The food is your average Tex-Mex, not anything amazing, and not worth a long wait. The service was good despite how busy they were. Our waitress did a great job managing our larger sized group. She was on top of the re fills, bringing out requests and got our food out in a reasonable amount if time- while it was still hot. She also brought out free chips and salsa as needed. Both of which were average. The food was a bit difficult to review as each item was not consistent. Most of our group ordered some type an combination of tacos. I had a ground beef and a chicken. The beef was better than the chicken, which was dry and did not have much flavor. I think the beef was just average, I could have made the same thing at home. The "special" puffy soft shell taco itself was very good, I think it is the appeal of the restaurant. It is too bad that they were not stuffed with better meat. Each was topped with lettuce, tomato and cheese. The meals come with rice and beans with the main, and either a small salad or "nachos" to start. This actually means a corn tostada with cheese melted onto it. Overall, I'm with Regina S. There are better Mexican places in the Detroit area.

I have never eaten here, but I know good Mexican food when I see it. Word from the wise! NEVER trust a Mexican Food place that does not use cilantro! Look at the pics, not a one of them has leaf of Cilantro!! This is not an authentic Mexican spot.

  • Laurie P.

I'm old enough to remember when El Charro was a tiny little place located in a tiny strip mall on Utica/Masonic. You've come a long way, baby, and your food has always been consistently good! My favorite dishes: Mexican style enchiladas (cheese and onion), the seafood nachos, the botana, and of course.. the guacamole is always perfect. If you go on a weekend, expect to wait for a table, but the service is always good. I can honestly say that I've never had bad service or a bad meal here in the last 40 years. That's saying something :)

  • Laura B.

I cannot believe all the negative, pretentious reviews of this place. We have been going to El Charro for my entire 30-year-life, and always love it. We have never had issues with service. We like the two salsas they give, but the spicier one is our favorite. One suggestion that I saw on another post would be for them to have white queso dip. Their queso is served in a large cast iron "bowl" and has chorizo, tomatoes, etc- not what we wanted! But the beef puffy tacos are my absolute favorite! I usually am good with one taco and chips/salsa for a decently filling meal. Is this place authentic? Not quite. Is it delicious? yes! It's definitely not fancy, but is more upscale than the typical hole in the wall joints. I truly don't understand all the negative reviews. We have enjoyed this place for decades, and now my husband and children request it anytime we are in town.

  • Kunal D.

I went with my wife for dinner. The place was not packed and after seeing the reviews, I decided to give it a try. The waitress was kind. The place was not busy even on a Saturday night. We ordered one quesadilla, enchilada papaya juice fries and fried ice cream. Quesadilla was only good out of all this. I think I wasted my money on rest. Deep fried ice cream had too much honey and too much strawberry. Enchiladas were too cheesy and I would not recommend to any one. The papaya juice was not real one. It was artificial juice watered down. Fries were ok.

Favorite Mexican restaurant! Their soft shell tacos are one of a kind. Salsa is mixed fresh daily. Sangria is super yummy. Never a bad meal here.

  • Ryan P.

The food was good and they have Dragon Mead so that is always a plus. There is a bar area or a dinning area; booths or small 4 person tables. Good place for a date with the close intimate seating at a table. They do have patio seating but I went in the winter. Our waitress was phenomenal. She warned us about the serving sizes so we didn't over order, she was always quick to check on us and get us a refill, and she always had a smile on her face while she joked around with us.

  • Rob H.

Fake Mexican food. Sub par service. There are better choices to make in the area. I have no idea why this place is always to busy. My guess is it's the Fraser folks just blindly going to a local business. It's way too expensive too.

  • Tricia H.

LOVE the tacos here. I crave them. And this coming from a girl who spent 12 years in Southern CA, so I am a bit picky when it comes to my Mexican food. Nice big space and friendly staff. They have call ahead seating which is great for the weekends.

  • Jeff G.

The fried taco shells are unique and tasty. Don't see those many places. I had the combination with chicken. They don't skimp on the meat. It was all good food, but nothing other than the tacos stood out. I'd call it a good alternative to Chi-Chi's or Mexican Fiesta, but not necessarily better and not authentic Mexican.

The food was ok, American mexican, but our waitress was super friendly and attentive. Great service.

After moving from Oklahoma City, my fiance and I have been on a quest for great Mexican food. El Charro was fairly good, but not the place I'm going to end up hankering for. Let me start by saying I had my eyebrows raised slightly about the whole "famous unique soft shell tacos." But it's simply fantastic. I don't know what they do to their soft tortillas, but they have good flavor and they just seem to melt in your mouth. Now on to my dinner: Excellent service throughout. Our waiter was kind and prompt. I have to take exception to the starters. I know that chips and salsa are just a given at a Mexican restaurant, and the salsa was satisfactory. But the chips? Meh. And what is it about the lack of a queso that doesn't come in a soup bowl? Mexican restaurant pro-tip: queso in the same size dish as your salsa is a great way to start. No such option here. Entrees weren't bad. I had the burrito dinner and my fiance sampled the cheese enchiladas. Not too much bad to say about my burrito. But the enchiladas were poor. Not a ton of taste. Look - El Charro is a fine place to find your evening meal. But I'm far from convinced that I couldn't find some better-tasting Mexican at a more reasonable price somewhere in the metro.

My wife and I stopped by on a Sunday night and were seated within 15 minutes. The service and food were quick and delicious. Great prices for the portion sizes and the restaurant is very clean and decorative. If you're looking for non-seasoned food, don't come here, go go Don Pablo's... But if you're looking for the good stuff, definitely check this place out!

  • Terry P.

Thank goodness for the guacamole dip that was the only good thing on the menu. The soft tacos were greasy extremely greasy and the rest the food just was not good.. Been there before quality was so much better.. Quality not quantity.. Table for six none of us was happy.... Service was very good though

We love El Charro! It's our families go to restaurant for Mexican food. Try the fish tacos served in their unique soft shell. Great beer selection.

  • Ferdinand T.

I recommend the soft shelled tacos. Staff was great and food was awesome. This place feels Mexican. They serve authentic tex-mex food. My children enjoy the loaded nachos and Fanta orange drinks. This place is very family friendly.

  • Suzzette M.

The only reason for the 4 stars is the unique soft taco and service. Both are always great. Everything else on the menu that I have had is just...meh. It isn't horrible by any means, but a lot of it just taste the same. Same seasoning, same toppings different "shell". That's about it. Both salsa's taste the same to me. One is chunkier, the other is like salsa juice/water. The unique soft tacos are great and that is really all we get anymore when we come. They are so good and very hard to explain! Worth the stop for sure!

Once in a while something happens where I just don't agree with the masses... This is one of those once in a whiles. Finally made it here for a friend's birthday. I don't know that she picked the restaurant or if it was picked by another friend, but we all ended up here. The place was filling up fast on a Friday around 630 and I took this as a good sign. (people=good food??) We were seated and our server was really nice and friendly. We were waiting on a few other girls so we started with margaritas and munched on chips. At one point we noticed there were 2 salsa bowls and they looked different. We found one to be very mild and one that was basically pureed tomatoes, and this was a a highlight as far as i'm concerned. Drinks came, they were fine. We all ordered. I ordered the "puffy tacos" that everyone just raves about, thinking they were puffy FLOUR tacos. They weren't. I ordered the 3 tacos, one ground beef, one chicken and one shredded beef. I was very excited about the chicken taco because when they are made right they are divine. But then again, THOSE chicken tacos were at a different restaurant...in Mexicantown. We got a side tossed salad, which I thought was very bizarre for a Mexican restaurant, but in hindsight I am thankful because it was the only thing I really ate. Food came and I dug in to my chicken taco. Yuck. Greasy bland chicken with a few shreds of lettuce and cheese, and the weird crunchy-chewy shell was not to my liking at all. I tried the rice and beans. Holy LORD, take those away... the rice had NO taste whatsoever and the beans were just a gloppy mess. I was pretty disappointed. I still took my other 2 tacos home in hopes of decent leftovers I could dress up, but to no avail. Everything was so greasy when I heated it up I just threw it right in the trash. $25.00 basically for one margarita, a few chips, and a side salad. Crap. I am giving 2 stars because I did like the decor and my friends seemed to like what they had ok, but they had all been before and had their "usual" orders. Personally, I would ONLY come back though for another party or invite type situation. I would never pick here to eat. No thanks. If this is "authentic" Mexican food, then I weep for Mexico. /Yuck!!!

First of all, I have to comment on all the people giving 1-2 star reviews and how obnoxious and pretentious they sound. This isn't a 5 star restaurant in downtown NYC, it's a Mexican restaurant chain. People complaining about the interior? It looks fine. The food isn't the best Mexican I've ever had (hence why the 4 star rating) but damn, the portion was HUGE! I got the chicken combination plate, and I had enough leftover for a full meal the next day. Service was good, our waiter was working hard to keep us happy, even with the annoying lady at the table next to us who asked 100 questions which would be known by a 5 year old. Our waiter apologized for us having to wait on him while she wasted his time, but we were understanding as it was his job to keep everyone satisfied. Prices are decent as well, I got what I paid for. All in all, I would go again. Ignore the negative reviews and try it for yourself.

I've been coming to this restaurant as long as I can remember, the food here is great and always consistent. It's always fast and we're in and out. The servers are also wonderful.

This place is a joke. There is no value here when you consider the serving they provide. Employees and service is always great, however, I was shocked at the serving size and amount of meet in the taco. After giving it a few tries, I decided I make better burittos, tacos, nachos, etc at home. And if you ask for sour cream or guacamole, they charge you $.60 and it's barely enough. My boyfriend likes their soft taco, as for me, I'll make my own Mexican meals. I'll never eat here again.

Have grown up on El Charro. I love their fajitas and their queso. I can always go for a pound of chips and a pint of salsa to go. Yummy!!!

    (4)
  • Ruby Z.

Place is clean. I like the fajitas but i wish they were still sizzling. It just comes on a plate (which i find weird) everyone loves there soft tacos, i find them semi bland, not to much flavor. I ordered a Margarita sampler. The picture makes it look like shot glasses. But it was almost a rocks glass and it was 10$!!! If i would of known that i would of said no. I love the chips and salsa though. Never really had a bad experience but never had a great one either.

If you have never been here, you have to go and try the Soft Shell tacos. They are like nothing else I have ever had. When I think of tacos, I think of El charro's Restaurant. No place else measures up. Also, their enchilada sauce is like a thick, beefy gravy full of meat. I get a side of sauce just to add to other things I order. Again, I have never seen a sauce like this any place else. They have a good selection of dinners and al a carte items. Great Margherita specials. They also have two types of salsa. One is a traditional thick type and the other is more of a fresh chop type. They are both excellent. I used to go to the old location on Utica Rd and now to all their new locations. And I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. I recommend this restaurant to all my friends, but most of the time they have already been there.

We come to El Charro's before the annual Fraser fair & fireworks, and then walk over to the fair. Their unique crispy soft shell fish tacos are the bomb, which makes it nearly impossible to order any thing else off the menu in my opinion. Free chips and salsa, friendly service and kids eat free on Sundays. I'm not sure what there isn't to love about El Charros (Spanish for cowboy). My brain can't help but crave those little complementary nachos with a jalapeno on it before my fish tacos arrive. I some times cheat and bump El Charro's up in our food rotation. I know one thing, If you have not tried El Charros, grab the family and check it out, the food is very great and I think there is a good shot you'll like as much as the my family & I do.

I haven't been to El Charro's in years, I too remember when it was in that little strip mall. I've been to the new place quite a few times too, went again last night. The unique soft shell tacos is the reason I go, they are still delicious and quite filling, I think I can eat three but always bring one home, very attentive service, drink refills were brought without asking, I always appreciate that. Service was quick and all our orders were prepare as we asked. I think I remember the salsa as being better before, in the old place it was in a squeeze bottle (home made but in a bottle). There were 4 of us and it came out to about eighty bucks, ... Im thinking going forward El Charro's will be date night for my wife and I.

This place ok. Food could us more Mexican seasoning, guac lacked salt, rice was white not Mexican and the enchilada sauce was a gravy. It reminds me of a bad Taco Bell

The botana and wet burrito were my favorites, but we were surprised by our burritos this evening how small they have become. Usually we take home at least half, but tonight they were just enough for our dinner. Our margaritas were also super sweet and very light on any alcohol. Food usually tastes wonderful, but our service tonight was not great either. Love the kids eat free on Sundays!

Went on Cinco De Mayo and it was about an hour wait around 6 PM. We sat down and ate the chips and salsa, I ordered the Classic Margarita (which was among the best I have ever had; big glass, frozen, you could taste the tequila but it wasn't overwhelming) and then had a salad with my entree. I ordered a Chipotle Ranch dressing that was quite good, and the salad was a good size. And then I ate like a ravenous wolf when I got my entree, the Wet Burrito. Damn, it was good! I was really full. Service was good, even though it was packed to the brim. The place has a solid menu and a uniqueness about it. It was great.

I've been going here with my family for mostly 4 years. & boy do I love them. I'm still getting around the menu. But it's hard when they have one thing that taste so good! Fajitas. I love them , they have chicken, steak, & shrimp. Haven't typed them yet. But my brother has had the steak, & he loved it. Me & my family are Italian, with a little Mexican. & I prefer Mexican from a long shot. EL Charles , is a very grate place for Mexican with awesome servers. Even when there Busy there still Carrie on a For Conversation with you. You'll get waited on fast, sometimes it may take a while, but not a long time. But it's only because they being in a lot of Business. Last year when x-mas was around, me & my granpa went there, the manager came up to are table & said are food was on the house. How nice right ? There was only 1 time they mess up on are food. But never again. & I've been going there for a good 4 years. If any one is looking for a grate family Mexican restaurant I recommend you go here.

Love this place! The food is good and is always consistent and the drinks are yummy. Definitely recommend the quesadillas and nachos. We really enjoy the fireplace during the winter and the patio in the summer! The chimichangas and fish tacos are also good. You really can't go wrong! Plus thy have margaritas...need I say more?

El Charro is an acceptable Mexican restaurant. The food is OK but not great by any stretch. It is often very busy so you may have to wait a while to get a table (especially on weekends). Given that there better choices in the area (Grand Azteca, Mexican Village, even Pancho Villa), one wonders why people are so into El Charro. My take: choose it only if nothing better is available.

  • Kent M.

After reading the previous reviews, either you like it or you don't. A favorite destination, I always show up there with friends or family. This is a nice place to stop for a meal. Most always the food is served as expected, rarely does it disappoint. Moderate prices, parking can be a little sparse when they're busy. Not sure if these are the owners of the original El Charro on Main Street in Mount Clemens 35 years ago, but they are the same family.

As other reviewers have indicated, there isn't much authentic about EC, but the food still tastes excellent! I keep going back and keep having that craving for their "poofy" taco. Portions are big and are on the higher end for Mexican food, but I have never had a bad thing there. This specific location is nicely decorated and a decent size. Service is mediocre.

    (4)
  • Bubba M.

Never lets you down. Is it authentic? I don't care. It's delicious. Been eating here for years, and I've NEVER had a bad meal or dish here. Standouts for me include the enchiladas, of course the puffy shelled tacos with any filling they offer. The Botana cannot be matched anywhere, and is hands down the best plate of nacho's I've ever eaten. In fact.. I may eat it tonight. The house made salsa is runny, delicious and perfect. Decent bar, excellent frozen drinks for the ladies ( or dudes who like frozen drinks)

I have not been here for years and its gotten a little better. Came here with mom and had a coupon that expires today, only to find out you cant use it on Friday or Saturday ( That's why they don't get 4 *s ) anywhoo, chips and salsa were good and our waitress was friendly and professional. Mom ordered a taco and beans and rice. I ordered the chicken enchiladas. mom says her taco was great and filling, I really enjoyed the Chicken enchiladas, succulent chicken, they use a white cheese ( I think it might be Munster but don't quote me on that ) w/ beans and rice, the rice a little on the small size and the beans were thick , both were good, got free refill on the pops and also came with my meal was the nacho ( 5 inch round tortilla chip with cheese on it with the option of the jalapeno which I declined ) was very good. I asked about how big there chimichangas were, just for future visit reference, the waitress said they were the size of egg rolls, I was little unhappy to hear that probably I have been spoiled by Monetary Salsa Cantina in Royal Oak, there Chimichangas are HUGE. Both mom and I were very happy coming to El Charro and look forward to returning soon ( next time we'll come sun - Thurs so we can take advantage of the coupon ) * and yes I do like to type things in ( parentheses )

Food was very filling. No one could finish their plate. Fluffy tacos were yummy. Will go back when I am over on that side of town.

Place sucks especially for vegetarian/ vegans. server was rude to me when I asked for no cheese on burrito. Overpriced food, average portion size, mediocre food quality. Better off going to qdoba or chipotle.

Its not authentic in the least, but its tasty. Its gringo-Mex with a midwestern twist (extra fat!). The soft taco is legit, as is their mole. I wouldnt waste my time on the Fraser location though. The smaller drive through location in St Claire Shores is much better all around.

I've heard about El Charro - I can't say I was disappointed, but I wasn't really blown away. I had a chicken burrito - it was a burrito, it tasted good. Minus points because I inquired about the possibility of black beans and guacamole instead of rice and refried beans but was told that wasn't possible - - which only disappointed me more when my meal came and I realized how yucky the rice was... Our waiter was nice but WAY all over the place - to his credit, they were super busy when we first sat down but things did calm down and he was still all over the place... Overall, the food was good - my friends seemed to enjoy their meals - it just wasn't anything astounding.

It's good! It's not authentic or anything but for what it is it's good! They have a pretty good botana there and the drinks are a good price and tastey. It's a staple on that side of town. I remember going there as a kid and it seemed so fancy when I was small ahahaha! I feel bad for the servers though. The uniforms are sooooo horrible!! Sometimes the service isn't so great here but I primarily get carry out so I can't complain all that much right. But if you are looking for a quick Mexican fix or something close to it this is a good place to start. I like it!

My girlfriend grew up coming here; back then apparently there was an awesome magician who would walk from table to table and do tricks for you and build you cool stuff out of balloons and such. We returned yesterday to celebrate a friend's 21st birthday, and while the magician sadly is no longer there, the very good food (IOHO) still is. We both got the Taco combos - she got hard-shell, I got their "Unique" soft shell. It comes with a salad or "cheese nacho." An immediate +1: on their nachos they use actual shredded cheddar cheese! Not fake cheese sauce! Good job El Charro. Moving on to the main course, when the tacos arrived, the gf's were, sadly, of the Taco Bell, pre-made shell variety. Mine, however, were HUGE CHALUPA-LIKE THINGS that dominated the plate and demanded respect from all lesser foods!! They were big and yummy and made with good ingredients, with love. If you like tacos and you come here, I'd recommend ordering this style of shell hands-down. I had to STUFF myself to finish the second taco!! The salsa was so good I filled up prematurely with chips and ate the third taco this evening, which was still highly-delicious, and I'm not usually a fan of not-ultra-fresh Mexican food. The atmosphere of the place is a large, multi-room restaurant with dim/medium lighting and an overall classy feel - the room we sat in had a very large fireplace with a very large fire burning. We will probably try to find ways to come here more often, as the food was delicious and bountiful.

Foodies be warned-- there is not one single authentic thing about El Charro. Not a one. That having been said, they're not terrible. Their "soft tacos" (I call them the poofy tacos, because that's actually what they are) are tasty, in a very American kinda way. I'm not going to lie-- I find myself craving one every once in a while. Their enchiladas are unobjectionable. Not fantastic, but they hit the spot. My biggest issue with them is that they appear to use pre-shredded cheddar for everything. Cheddar, people! At least have the decency to use some real Mexican muenster if you're going to smother things in cheese (also, not an authentic thing to do.) However, their drinks are tasty and the fried ice cream is worth the trip alone.

My Spanish is a little rusty but I'm pretty sure 'El Charro" means "Dog Poop" in English. This place is horrible for food, it could very well be the worst Mexican food I have ever had. all the money was spent on interior design and all they had left over for food was GFS products. This Restaurant reminds me of the kind of place I would have taken a girl in high school to to impress her with the fancy statues and trick her into think she was at a high end Restaurant. But, as an adult there is no reason to go here ever unless you like disappointment and thimble size side of sour cream.

For the area this is a great family style Mexican restaurant. Their portions are large and well made, I tried a combo dish and was satisfied with each item. Service and quality is great. You can easily find better Mexican elsewhere, but I'm not so sure I would take children to those areas. El Charro does the trick.

I grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico and was raised by a mother who carried her own hot sauce in her purse, since she knew in advance that no restaurant was going to get their salsa "right." If there is one thing I know about Mexican food it's this: MEXICAN FOOD HAS FLAVOR! El Charro is the blandest, least appetizing "Mexican" food I've ever eaten...and that includes several variations on the frozen burrito. It was a bad sign when my dining companion (DC) asked the server which of the salsa's placed on our table was mild. We were told that the mild is simply tomato paste and water and is available only by request, since most people don't like it anyway. I knew then that we should just leave. But, being of inquiring mind and hearty stomach, we pressed forward into this culinary black hole. Within a few minutes, we were perusing menus that included such traditional fare as "white cheese," "yellow cheese" (because nothing says authentic like avoiding any and all use of the Spanish language) and at least two "authentic" chili-covered entrees. We placed our orders- enchiladas for myself and chimichangas for DC. We were each given the option of either a salad or an order of nachos before our entree. In the interest of science, we chose one of each. My salad was plain iceberg, with a few sad carrot shavings and ranch dressing, diluted into an inedible mess by the amount of water coating the lettuce. Not very appetizing. DC's nachos were four tortilla chips, oily with the dried-out baked cheese on top and with a single jalepeno round placed a top each one. Not very impressive. When the main course arrived, DC commented that his looked more like a plate of frozen eggrolls with a side of gravy than anything approaching the familiar chimichanga. My enchiladas were soggy and absolutely slathered in what I'm guessing might be the mild sauce. It should be noted that the other variation on enchiladas included chili. Yep....that's "authentic." The rice that accompanied both entrees was vaguely peach colored and utterly lacking an any spice or seasoning, including salt. My enchiladas were topped with what I have to assume was the "white cheese"- which could've been velveeta or even eraser shavings, but certainly wasn't the queso blanco that I grew up eating in Albuquerque. Maybe it's a bit much for me to expect Old Town cuisine in the heart of suburban Michigan; but if they're going to throw around words like "authentic" I'm going to hold them to it. If El Charro cannot deliver on their quality promise, they should at least offer amazing customer service to make up for the menu deficiencies, right? Yeah....not gonna happen. DC and I ate at around 3:00 on a Monday- well before and after the lunch and dinner rushes. There were 2 other tables seated in our section. Having been a waitress myself once upon a time, I am intimately familiar with what the job entails- and there's no reason why anyone working a 3 table section, during a slow period, should fail to check in on their guests, or even refill their drinks. DC and I kept edging out empties closer and closer to the edge of the table waiting for her to check back in. Eventually, she asked us if we wanted refills- when she brought us our check. Flavor: Nursing home food is better seasoned. Menu: Exactly what Michiganders who have never been to Mexico would imagine they should serve. Service: What service? Price: $6-10 per person Overall: You're better off staying home with Jose' Ole' (This review first appeared on devourdetroit.com )

There has been a lot of hating on this place in Yelp! forums lately. I've been to the St. Clair Shores location as well as this location. I mostly come here because my friends like it and sometimes you want Mexican but you don't want to drive to Mexican Village downtown to get it. Pros: Fresh tasting salsa (I remember more garlic & cilantro at the St. Clair Shores location but lately it's got less probably due to crybaby local customers, got to please them I guess) Good quality cheese. I love their botana. I'm not a superfan of the puffy taco's but I like them once in awhile. A vegetarian I knew used to get a bean burrito w/ sour cream, I tried one and it was pretty good. They have 2 different patio areas in this location. Cons: Expensive! Especially for the portion you get. I'm used to Xchochimilco where you'd get a bigger, better tasting portion at a lower price. 25 years ago I was not a fan of the beef, it tasted funny but the flavor has improved since then. I don't blame El Charro too much for their prices. People are willing to pay it and it's a fun place to eat especially with friends. It's supply & demand and there is not much competition in the area. Also, with gas prices the cost savings of going downtown decreases. 3.5 Stars

This food is just plain boring! Remember the chicken chimi's they used to serve at Chi-Chi's? Filled with spices, chicken and cheese? No? That's ok - apparently no one at El Charro's remembers that either. I ordered The Chicken chimi dinner with nachos instead of salad. The nachos (or should I say nacho - since it was just one circle of fried tortilla topped with cheese, didn't even bother to cut it into 4 chips - served as a cheese "disk") were just bland. No better than taking a plain old tortilla chip and topping it with melted "taco cheese". The entree was not much better. The chicken chimi's (you get 3 small ones) are simply 3 small soft tortillas rolled around shredded chicken and topped with a redish/brown sauce. Not offensive, but nothing that made you crave more either. Tasted just like chicken wrapped in a tortilla. The re-fried beans are very thin and runny, but they do have some flavor. As for the rice? I've had spicier rice to served to me while I was in the hospital. Despite all my negativity, I do like this place - it's a step up from taco bell. But the food is bland, bland, bland. Because of how dull the food is, when we are craving mexican, I order it as a carry-out, so that I can doctor it up a bit at home and add some flavor.

We had friends come in from out of state, and being new here ourselves, didn't know exactly where to go for dinner. With the help of Yelp, we chose El Charro. Great Choice! 4 adults and 4 kids, we were seated quickly. The staff was polite and attentive without hovering. The prices were very reasonable. If you are looking for a relaxed dining experience, I highly recommend this place.

El Charro's isn't exactly authentic Mexican, but that doesn't even matter because the food is THAT good. On any given Sunday you can see at least one member of my family in the dining room. The chips and salsa are great! I haven't had anything on this menu that I haven't liked. The fried ice cream is also fabulous!

I've been coming here for years. My parents live a couple miles away and we made this a weekly or bi-weekly spot when I was younger. We decided to meet my parents for dinner here last night and nothing had really changed. They have updated a few things. There is now additional outdoor seating, which some like, but I hate eating outdoors. I'm probably in the minority on that one. The funny looking uniforms the servers wear hasn't changed at all. Anyhow, we started off with the cheese fondue. I have loved this for years and it didn't disappoint. These cheese is your run of the mill queso dip with jalepenos, but the star of the show is their special soft taco sticks. It's the same shell as their soft shell tacos, more to come on those, just in strip form. Great way to start the meal. My parents love getting the botana, which is basically a version of nachos. Always nicely prepared and tasty. I got a couple soft shell tacos. I love these here. The shell is deep friend, but not like a hard tortilla. It's hard to explain. Very unique. The one thing that is a bit disappointing was the fajitas. I guess I accustomed to big sizzling platers with melted cheese on them, but they just looked regular. Flavor was still excellent though.

The thing with El Charro - is that I am giving it a 2-star review, and yet I continue to go back. I know it's not great food... but something still draws me in. The thing I love about El Charro - is the soft taco shells and their deep-fried puffy goodness. I know they are bad for me, but they taste so good - I am even one of the freak-shows who orders the fondue at El Charro's just so I can get a basket of the soft taco sticks. That said, I don't think I am ever really happy with or "wow"ed by anything I order here. The burritos and enchiladas are pretty flavorless... as is the taco meat that they use. The entrees come with salad or cheese nachos - the cheese nachos consisting of 4 of the chips that are already complimentary that have melted cheese and 1 jalapeno on each. Go with the salad- not that it's great, but you already have a basket of chips on your table. (I do like the salsa, by the way) I have had some tasty beverages here, and they do run the occasional good drink special. The thing is, on top of all this, El Charro's is usually pretty crowded - and while waiting for a table doesn't seem so common ANYWHERE in this economy right now, you will still notice a certain slowness of service. In closing, I wouldn't really recommend El Charro's to anyway... but I know I will find myself there again in the near future- and will leave wondering why. :o)

A native to Metro Detroit, I have always enjoyed food from El Charro. Went this past weekend and enjoyed a dinner with a friend and we both were very pleased with our food. Chips were nice and fresh, and the salsa was tasty. My food came in decent time and my "soft" tacos were just how I like them. It may not be "authentic", but it's good and it's consistent every time I go, so I can't complain!

When my Californian-born mother came to visit for Christmas, she asked we take her to a fast-food restaurant that wasn't a national chain. This was the first place that came to mind and also the best option I could have picked for her. Now, Mom and I both love authentic Mexican food, and El Charro is not that, but El Charro is inexpensive, fast, and very tasty. You order at a counter, get your soft drinks from a fountain, and then wait for the server to bring your meal to the table. The dining area in the St. Clair Shores restuarant is cheerful and colorful and the atmosphere is pretty pleasant. The portion of chips you get with your meal is fairly small, and I LIKE that because there's less of an incentive to pig out on chips before the meal arrives! Salsa and guacamole here are both good and I've never encountered nasty brown avocado here as I have at some area restaurants. I've enjoyed many things on their menu, like the Botana, the Avocado Cheese Crisp, and the fried ice cream, but the main draw here is the "Unique Soft-Shell Taco" aka the "poofy" taco. Beef and chicken are both worth ordering and I usually put a bit of salsa on it to raise the heat level. Anyway, Mom and I enjoyed our poofy tacos and the visit to El Charro proved successful.

Good Mexican, Unique Tacos I grew up frequenting El Charro, so I thought I would stop in during my last visit to the Detroit area. The free chips & salsa are still great. The unique soft shell tacos are still my favorite menu item. On this occasion, I had a sampler platter. Other than the taco, everything was just ok. Not quite as good as I remember, but still as solid choice for Mexican food in the area.

I came here with some family to celebrate my aunt's birthday. I have eaten here a few times in the past, and was really not impressed, so I wasn't exactly excited to eat here to begin with. As it turns out, food was pretty good this time. I ordered a Negro Modelo on tap, one of my favorites. The chips were good and we were provided with a selection of salsas to dip them in, and they were all tasty. We ordered a large Avocado Cheese Crisp for an appetizer. It is like a Mexican pizza, with melted cheese, lots of avocado, beans, bacon, tomatoes, on a crispy baked tortilla. It was fantastic and the whole table enjoyed it! We each had a small salad with fat-free honey cilantro dressing. The dressing had no flavor, couldn't taste neither honey nor cilantro. No worries, as it was simply a salad included with our meals. Nothing salt and pepper couldn't fix. 3 people in my group ordered El Charro's specialty puffy tacos. They all enjoyed them. 1 person ordered a burrito combo plate, she also liked hers. I ordered a half-fajita plate with a side of rice and beans. The half-fajita was not as expected. I expected traditional fajitas, served on a skillet, but half the size. What I received was a really a soft taco stuffed with the fajita toppings (chicken, onions, peppers, tomatoes, jalapenos, and zucchini) with cheese melted on it. Although it wasn't what I expected, it was pretty good. I did not receive the side of rice and beans that I had ordered. I thought the server would bring them on another trip, but before I could ask him, someone in my group simply gave me hers because she did not want them. Perhaps he forgot to order them. Overall, dinner was pretty good. He brought my aunt a fried ice cream for her birthday, it was on the house. He also said my aunt would receive 50% off of her meal for her birthday. We received the bill. There was a charge for a side of rice and beans, so I had to ask the server to remove it, since I hadn't received the side. He did. One person wanted to put some of the bill on her credit card, so I asked him to run the card for $20, and then upon returning, I'd give him cash for the rest. He returns and sets down the credit card slip quickly with a pen and walks away. The card was charged for the entire bill. A minute later he returns with a new credit card for $20. We hadn't said anything to him yet. He drops it off apologizing that he gave us the wrong one. However, he doesn't say that he erred in any way. I pay the rest of the check and tip in cash. This should be the end of the review, but the next day my friend's bank account shows a charge for $85. She is very concerned. I immediately know what happened. The server charged the card the entire price of the meal at first (which we knew because he accidentally gave us the slip showing that amount). I work at a restaurant, so I am familiar with this process. Even when a charge is made and immediately voided out, the bank statement may not reflect it as such. Remember, the bank is quick to add charges, but not as quick to give a credit. I told my friend to wait a few days to see if the $85 charge is reversed, as it usually takes a few days for the bank to do so. After a few days, if it hadn't been, I would have to call the restaurant. Lo and behold, after 3 days, the $85 charge disappeared and was replaced by a $20 charge. I knew this would be the case. My problem with the situation, however, is that the server didn't really explain this. He should have provided a copy of the VOIDED transaction of $85 when he presented her with the new charge slip of $20. He needed to explain that he charged the incorrect amount initially and that it would be fixed. However, he didn't explain any of that. Luckily, I knew that this would be the case, so I kept my friend calm about it over the few days after dinner. I should have asked the server to provide the voided transaction receipt at the time, but it hadn't crossed my mind since we were opening gifts. Despite this gaffe, dinner was enjoyable. The server perhaps needs additional training on how to handle financial errors on his part with his guests. That being said, he was extremely polite and attentive to our needs.

I've put off reviewing El Charro's for quite a while because I felt it might be a bit unfair. However, after reading some of the other reviews--I couldn't stop myself. El Charro's has been a family tradition for as long as I can remember. My family has been eating the food since the time that they just had one tiny location in St. Clair Shores. It must be noted that if you are looking for authentic Mexican this might not be the place for you. It's Americanized a bit--but still so delicious. Since moving to Chicago about a year ago now, I've found myself daydreaming of the unique soft taco shell on more than one occasion. The Sangria Swirl Margarita is also incredible and don't even get me started on the Cheese Fondu. I've been back in town for a visit this past week and the one thing that's been at the top of my list is El Charro's. It always will be.

Growing up close to Detroit I ate in Mexican Town a lot, Now that I'm in Sterling Heights and too far to drive there for dinner, El Charros's has become my favorite local Mexican place out here. Love the ground beef flavor. The corn Tacos are unique too. Lots of Combination plates to choose from and I like that they give you a small appetizer with your meal. Usually cup of soup or nachos (4 chips with cheese and jalapeno peppers). Its not like any place in Mexican Town in Detroit but its been a great substitute.

My family started going to El Charro back when it was a tiny hole in the wall at the original location in Fraser. It's always been a family favorite, and I always try to squeeze in a stop when I'm back at home. Like others have noted, it's not the most authentic, but the food is always good and the portions are generous. I can't think of anything I've had here that I disliked. My favorites are the botana, soft shell tacos, and enchiladas (get fries to dip in the enchilada sauce!), but everything is tasty. We always have great service too - although I'll be the first to admit that might just be because my parents are regulars!

Very good. It may not be authentic but the food is great. The decor of the restaurant is very unique, they have a nice outdoor patio as well. The staff are always friendly. The unique soft shell tacos are the best. You get a lot of food for the price. I have been going to this restaurant since I can remember.

Meh. When El Charro was just a hole in the wall in the Shores, I stayed away because of the quality of the food, and the not-so inviting storefront. I thought I'd give EC another shot, given that they've branched out. The new location is MUCH more inviting, but I couldn't help but feel that they'd just put a shine on the same old crap. I've always felt their plate presentation was sloppy, like they expected me to cut everything up and mix it all together like Coldstone does with ice cream. No, I don't do this, and though how the food looks on the plate may be a shallow critique, it definitely matters to me as far as first (born-again first?) impressions go. I have to agree with Caroline, in that their meat dishes are sloppy on the inside. Again, this seems to be an extension of my issues with plate presentation; if it looks sloppy, it'll probably taste that way too. Honestly I've had better Mexican from Don Pablo's for about the same price. Though I know Don Pablo's food probably comes out of cans, they can at least fool my taste buds into thinking that's not the case. The beans definitely come out of the can, the salsa most likely as well, and I'd hope that they at least make their own guacamole, though from how that tasted... I'd be reluctant to say that they do. I wouldn't recommend El Charro for Mexican on the East side. Your best bet would most likely be Guelaguetza, which has better prices, better food, but a smaller menu. I'd sacrifice menu size for quality, as well as the new snazzy dining area. I would really like to know why this place does so much business. Is it that I just keep catching the kitchen staff on their off days, or is it that Taco Bell has sullied our expectations of Mexican (or faux-Mexican)? You can be the judge, just don't touch the guacamole!

I've eaten at El Charro several times and have always had good food there. Furthermore, I've eaten at popular Mexicantown restaurants like Xochimilco, and El Charro compares favorably to any of those. The service is good too. That being said, I should add a qualification to my rating. I would really say that the food earns a "high 3 star" rating, and I have rounded up. In other words, if I'm in the area I would definitely go there to eat, but I wouldn't drive across town just to go there. Like Caroline mentioned in her review, the place does get a lot of customers, so especially on the weekends you might want to make reservations.

We have been going here for a couple of years. Their soft shell tacos are a must try. We enjoy their bottomless chips and salsa. I had issues with a rude server and called the manager later to discuss it, he was very apologetic and I was completely reimbursed for our meal.

Went with a friend for lunch. Very good! She had a taco salad and I had a beef chimichanga (sp?) . Both were tasty, though mine needed a little of the table's salsa added for moisture. Kind of pricey but I loved the decor and the feel of the place as well as the food.

The only thing that I've had at El Charro thus far is the Chorizo and Eggs. That's some pretty tasty stuff. It's a bit dry, but that's okay. It tastes pretty good. It's decently priced, and they deliver to my workplace out in Warren. It's a popular place with the crowd at work, and we've been ordering from there on a fairly regular basis for the past month or so. I enjoy their chips too.

I've been here a few times, and all I can say is wow. The queso dip is amazing and the main courses are delicious. However, the rice and beans aren't the best I've ever had. The cheescake chimichanga is a must-try! All in all, the food is excellent and well worth the price.

This is the flagship El Charro location, and oh boy do they make some good Mexican food. Authentic? Who knows, but it's amazing! I usually get the "Unique Soft Shell Taco Dinner". The tacos are made of soft shells, but the shells are deep-fried. You might be asking "well, isn't that just a hard-shell taco?" No, it's not--it's different but kind of hard to explain how. You'll just have to try them. I promise you won't be disappointed. Try to call-ahead for seating, as they usually get pretty packed.

I've been going here for decades. It's good food at a nice price. It's not the best mexican restaurant you'll find. It's no where's near the worst. I've never had bad service here. When I ask for something special (like a burrito made with a corn tortilla instead of flour), they are very accomodating.

The husband and I went here for lunch today and ehhh, not impressed at all. The salsa, both spicy and mild were bland. It was like they just opened up a can of seasoned diced tomatoes and added a couple shakes of hot sauce. Also, I like my beef enchiladas with shredded beef not ground. But aside from that , it was overly sauced and mushy. I ordered double rice (not a fan of the refried beans) but it looked like they just gave me a single scoop of rice while I compared it to my husbands plate (he got both rice and refried beans). He ordered the pork enchiladas and again, mushy and overly saucey. The flavors were good but the sauce / meat ratio is undoubtedly off. They must be doing something else good because they seem to have lots of customers. I don't think we'll go back.

Went there a few weeks ago for my bday dinner. The only good thing that came out of the experience was that I got my age % off my bill. The food was dry and overcooked (in the microwave). The waitress forgot my tamales 3 different times which I finally got them to go, after I had to tell her 3 times that she never brought them out. Never again!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
