I travel for work and eat alone often. The burger was very good. The IPA was average. The service was, at best, indifferent. I tended bar in college( early 70s). I never tip 0 and usually 25-30%. My server was over paid. I left $1. Bottom line: I went out of my way to visit here- it will be my final one. Service matters. There are many other good choices in Michigan.

Would have been nice if the waitress had cleared the plates, but other than that...loved the Ruben eggrolls, potato skins seemed to have almost like velveeta cheese (ie the kind that comes out of the mac n cheese box) but still super yummy! Shrimp plate is great, but the onion rings weren't the best (: Really good service other than the not clearing plates!

We ordered Kern's sampler which is a nice variety of local meats. It would have been nice to know a decription of the meats prior to ordering as one of them was spicy and I don't tolerate spice well. Otherwise the meat and mustard were well balanced. We also ordered the 12" chicken cordon bleu pizza. It was filling and pretty good for not being a pizza place. This was a nice casual restaurant, but the entrees are a bit over priced. I would also suggest adding their non-alcoholic drinks to their menu.

I love their food. We come here every year for back to the 80s fest! Would definately be Back. Wish they had kalamari steak again

My wife and I were checking out micro breweries in Michigan and found Sullivan's. I have judged a lot of beers and all the beers on tap here were outstanding excellent examples of the style named. Most of the breweries in Michigan offer 6-8 beers, one or two being good beers, one poor example, and the rest mediocre. All the beers at Sullivan's were great. I had the BBQ platter that was easily enough food for two. Ribs were very moist and tender. The rest of the plate was good too. My wife had the sausage plate and she was happy with that, but thought the sauerkraut was not as good as it should be for a German style restaurant. My wife also liked all he beers here. This place is kind of off the beaten kitsch path in Frankenmuth, but worth the extension of effort.

After 3 times visiting we will not be back...Service is never great and the food is always below average...

Today was my first time dining at this establishment. It was alright. The atmosphere was fair and prompt service. But the food was lacking, the chicken roulade Was dry and under seasoned. However the sauce on it was devine, by far the best part of that dish. I also had a cup of there white cheddar ale soup, it was splendid. A strong cheddar flavor accented by a light and savory ale, absolutely delicious! I had the chorizo stuffed mushroom as an appetizer. It was tasty, but not very substantial for the price. All in all I found my time there to be enjoyable, Some good food, and some fantastic sides. Some unhappily high prices, its definately worth a try, but not worth the hype.

its like a small diner with a brewery. Beer is good, ambiance is non-existent. Staff is OK. Attended a wedding reception on second floor. Its like an entirely different and much better looking restaurant. I miss Frankenmuth Brewery. That place was 5 stars.

I'm a harsh critic when it comes to my food. It took two visits to win me over at Black Forest. I'm sure the beers are good but I'm all about the food. I ordered the White Cheddar soup the first visit and I don't know the nutritional information but it can't be good. Last visit I tried the Chicken Shnitzle, and I'm sure I'm spelling that wrong. That chicken dish was lightly sauced and arrived looking like three beautiful chicken medallions. My husband ordered the bbq chicken and I tried it, it was also done well. The red clam chowder was the soup of the day and it was pretty good. I'll go back and try the bbq sample plate in addition to a couple other dishes. I should add that the red skin mashed was a bit over whipped and possibly not the freshest.

Everyone enjoyed their food. Nachos with beef was good as an appetizer along with a Reuben sandwich, pizza, chicken wrap and a cherry salmon. Brussels sprouts were sautéd that our friend loved. Service was fine. The micro beers on tap were also enjoyed. Place wasn't very busy and once we sat down our waiter did a good job. We'd go back here. The 12" pizza was split between two people and half of it was taken home because it was so big. Deep dish style. This was a good place to eat.

Kerns Sausage Sampler was excellent, nice variety of meats. Pretzel bun rolls were soft, warm and delicious. I had the Texas Barbecue which was tender and sweet. My wife had the Cuban, which she liked. Service was good as well, would definitely recommend if you are in the area after a visit to the Christmas store.

First the only food we ordered that was good was the Reuben egg rolls. We got chicken wings and they were completely raw!! When we got home I looked at my banking app and realized they not only charged us for our meal but they charged us for someone else meal as well. We had to drive all the way back for them to refund us. Not the best experience.

This place gets 3 stars for wedding venue. We attended a dry wedding so we had to go downstairs for beverages. Good beer selection on tap. Food was ok buffet style. Bad macaroni and cheese, green beans and carrots pretty mushy. Salad was basic and fine. Prime rib station was good. They let the wedding party bring their own deserts. That seemed like a great idea to keep costs down. Good place for a value wedding. I would try the regular restaurant menu.

  • Joe S.

Brett is awesome and the food is great! The beer selection is the best in the town! We also checked a few places out in town and this was by far our favorite place with the best service.

  • Michael N.

The food was very bland. The most flavorful thing was my daughter's lemonade. My burger had zero seasoning, the bun was the only flavor it provided. My wife had the chicken nachos, which had canned chicken with no flavor and ball park cheese. At least my daughter's Mac n cheese wasn't Kraft. The prices and food would not warrant a return trip.

We drove 5+ hours to arrive to Frankemuth and shopped at Bronner's first.. (Mistake) By the time we were done - everyone was Hangry. We stopped at Black Forest as we were so hungry and it was very close. The brewery portion has been sold off and it is just a restauarnt now. The restaurant is dated and could use an update but the food was good for lunch. It was dead when we got there so we didn't have to wait at all for a table or service. If you are looking to grab something quick this is a great place.

Black forest is a decent spot to grab some grub when your in the Frankenmuth area. First off its true they don't make their own brews anymore, sad but true. They do however offer some great craft beers as a substitute. Secondly yes the interior is dated and reminds me somewhat of an upper scale version of Dennys with a side room added for private parties and such! Ok the food, well the buffet is a fair option to try with a nice variety if you wish to go that route. The pan fried schnitzel is a great choice to order off the sit down menu plus it's a German dish considering the area and the name of the establishment! Nice, crispy and tasty! Very good meal for sure! I stop on in occasionally over the years and will continue to do so.

The blackened salmon was seasoned perfectly and cooked just right. They claim to have famous fish and chips and I agree that the fish is delicious. Lightly battered and not greasy. I skipped the chips and had fresh steamed veggies that were also cooked just right. I also recommend the beer sampler. They know what they're doing. Anything you don't like is probably because you don't like the style, not the brewmaster. Service was good with friendly staff. Don't be shy about trying this place! Odds are good you will be pleased.

A very nice selection of beers and the food is pretty good, too. I had the cheese soup, infused with ale. Yummy. Nice wine selection as well. A little pricey on certain labels. Bartenders make good recommendayions when it comes to food and wine pairings. Wait staff service is so-so. Really nice ambience and place looks really cool.

Left due to lack of service. I came in from out of town only to discover that Main Street was incredibly busy for some reason. I decided to check on Black Forest because I know their food is usually good and I knew it was off the main drag. The hostess seated me right beside a crying baby in an empty house and I didn't get any service whatsoever for 10 minutes. Not even a polite we will be right with you. So I left. I'm not putting up with a crying baby unless I have a beer in my hand.

Visiting Frankenmuth from central Michigan. Stopped here due to the above average rating. No brew house but some good Michigan Beers and that is where the good stuff ended. The place lacked atmosphere, service was just ok and the menu lacked anything really unique or original. We had a pizza which was good, but nothing special, the soup was good, sausage sampler was quite tasty and the cheese sticks were average. Thought it would be better than the brewery downtown, but we were wrong. There are better places than this,

The salad was mediocre and didn't even fill up the bowl. I had prime rib and a baked potato, it was all just ok. My husband had the fish and shrimp plate, also ok. It was dead on a Friday night which is an indicator of just ok food. I would not come back. The beer selection is its only saving grace.

The only thing redeemable about this restaurant is the cheese sticks (which are fantastic). When we arrived, it was absolutely dead. After looking around until we finally saw a sign that said "please seat yourself" we chose a nearby booth. We waited 15 minutes for our server to come to the table, and when she did she never even gave us her name. She came promptly back with our drinks and we gave her our food order for cheese sticks as an appetizer and a sandwich for me and a quesadilla for my boyfriend. The cheese sticks took a good 15 minutes to come out, but were hot and delicious. We waited another 20 minutes for our entrees. While we were waiting I saw the bartender on staff leave the bar and return with food from the kitchen, sit down at the bar, and eat it. I don't know if that's a normal occurrence, but it seems highly unprofessional to me. Later, I heard him announce that he was going out to smoke with a customer. Again, I think that's unprofessional. While our server kept our drinks refilled, she too would sit up at the bar with the bartender. Food was okay in the end, but overpriced. Will stop back, but only for an order of cheese sticks.

It was basically heaven's waiting room. We were the youngest people there, but did I enjoy myself?..heck yeah! We mosied up to the bar, got us a huge mug of Four Weather House Ale..deliciously sweet! Some apps: Kern's Sausage Sampler: pretty much meat on a skewer-it was tasty. It came with mustard and a couple rolls. I would have preferred crackers but I digress. Next, the Bruschetta-It was ehh, the bread it came with was blek. It tasted old and chewy, not crispy and savory. I had two bites and I was done. The bartender was super nice but the atmosphere was lacking. I felt like a banquet was about to break out at anytime and the bride was about to stroll through.

Great place large portions good environment for the family great selection of local brews if you can't decide try the super sampler you get to choose 10 4oz to try. Food was great good portion at a fair price will go back.

Not bad. Stopped in yesterday after taking the wife to Bronners. I remember seeing something about 10 of their beers on tap. In reality, it was more like 5 and 5 guest taps. Place was very open, cut-rate bland furnishings and decor. Combined with the dozen or so senior citizens, I felt like I was in a nursing home dining room. Food was decent, no complaints. Easy kids menu, standard faire. Service was attentive and friendly. Beer was ok. Porter was standard but no major flaws, maibock was a little underattenuated. Would've liked to have seen more house beers on tap.

Sullivans catered my wedding, and we couldn't have been happier!!! Our reception site only provided chairs and tables, so we needed EVERYTHING! The table skirts were beautiful and so were the napkins. Everything was lovely! We got the deluxe service with 1 reg entree, 1 premium... no alcohol... and it came to about $15 a head! I couldn't ask for better. My guests loved the food - they complimented my choice of caterer many times. My husband and I were very pleased. I highly recommend this caterer!

I can only comment on the beer and service here. And both were great. We tried the sampler at the bar. We had eaten already at Bavarian Inn and walked around enough to make a bit of room for beer. We tried the sampler which was basically everything house made. Everything was very true to style and good to excellent examples. Will definitely be back.

It looked like they were doing some updating when I went. It's a bit outdated when you walk in. Lots of seating, huge restaurant. The food was ok. They have homemade chips which is great, but my friend and I both had chips that were a bit overdone. The service was alright, I feel like he didn't really want to wait on us even though we were being nice. I've been here several times and it just hasn't really impressed me. The guy that seated us wasn't too friendly either.

4 stars. 5 if they dimmed the lights. The beer is better than Frankenmuth Brewery. My buddy and I had a sausage sampler and two beer flights. The Fair Weather House Ale was by far the best beer. Atmosphere was ok but they need to dim the lights. We liked this place overall. Service was okay... Non remarkable but okay. We liked it though. Priced moderately. 7.00 for a beer flight. Enjoy!

Unfortunately Black Forest is no longer a "brew haus". They sold their brewing equipment. Michigan craft beers are still on tap but are a bit on the pricey side. Starting in 2014 they've also cut down to only being open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The food is normally good, and I always like to recommend the sausage trio.

I've been twice now - and while I don't hate the place, I'm not really excited about it either. There is initial confusion when walking in due to the decor - the place is not that old, but was decorated straight out 1987. It makes it look geriatric- which isn't what I'm expecting from a "brew haus". Food was okay, but I've never had anything that I was excited about eating. Service has been mediocre as well. I find the Frankenmuth Brewery to be superior in just about every facet... except for parking.

This is my first bad review. Last night hubby and I were there for over an hour in the dining area. We never saw a server the whole time we were there, even though there were many around. We got our own beer at the bar finally. It was not very cold and more expensive than the other brew pub in town.

I had not been here is quite some time and from what I remember my first and only trip here did not impress me. But last night..... I attended my first Beer Appreciation Meeting at Sullivan's Black Forest Brewery in Frankenmuth Michigan last night and had a fantastic time! The theme for the night was beer and chocolate and for $20 the evening included a full buffet, a pint of your choice, 7 6oz samples and 7 fine chocolates. What a deal! For our pints I ordered their Gateway Foreign Extra Stout (4.5/5) while my wife tried their Pirate's Porter (Dark ale, robust and roasty with notes of coffee and chocolate ABV 5.3% IBU 25 4/5). Both were served well. Dinner included: Salad. Fresh green with strawberries and a fantastic Raspberry Vinaigrette dressing. Vegetable Tray Rolls Rice Black Beans (wow!) Chicken Teriyaki? Roast Beef Pork Loin The chocolates were furnished by Frankenmuth Funship and included White Chocolate Pretzel Round, Marzipan covered with Milk Chocolate, Dark chocolate, Zak's Cappuccino Truffle, Zak's Grand Marnier Truffle, Chocolate covered Rasberry and Funship's Triple Mouse Truffle. The samples were: 1. Woody's Light. Our classic golden ale uses three hop additions for crisp drinkability ABV 4.1% IBU 17. Paired with the pretzel (4/5) 2. Grateful Red. Making Jerry proud with an amber ale that features a pleasing malt character ABV 5.0% IBU 12. Paired with the triple mousse truffle (4/5). 3. Brown Porter. Paired with the dark chocolate. (4/5) 4. Gateway Foreign Extra Stout. Paired with the marzipan. (4.5/5) 5. Sully's Irish Stout. Our stout has a very rich dark color, a smooth roasted aroma and flavor combined with a light body make for a very drinkable brew ABV 4.0% IBU 32. Paired with the cappuccino truffle. (3.5/5) 6. Lost Sailor IPA. Gold Medal winning American-style India Pale Ale that is guaranteed to satisfy the cravings of any hop-lover ABV 7.0% IBU 60. Paired with the Grand Marnier truffle (3/5) 7. Bad Boy Barley Wine. Paired with the raspberry. (3/5) The most amazing pairing was by far number 1. Guest speaker for the night was Rex Halfpenny. A fantastic job by Rex! His credits include: 1. Sensory Evaluation of Beer program at the Siebel Institute of Technology in Chicago 2. Spearheading the effort to legalize home brewing in Michigan 3. Co-founder of the Michigan Brewers Guild 4. Served on various panels for the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup 5. Publishes the Michigan Beer Guide 6. Pieces in numerous other beer-related magazines 7. Teaches courses on the sensory analysis of beer and on how to become a beer judge. From Rex, "Beer is food. Beer is liquid bread"

The only thing a bit off putting is the smell of beer brewing but it is a brewery after all. And maybe the brewer watching us and looking hungry. I had the white cheddar and ale soup to start. YUM! Hubby had the bean & bacon soup and really liked it. For entrees I had the prime rib sandwich and hubby had the prime rib. Both were fantastic. Our server, Zach, was friendly and attentive without hovering. And the cocktails were very good also. Nice finish to our last day of vacation.

Our original lunch destination in Frankenmuth had been the Frankenmuth Brewing Company ...but there were no parking places. After vainly circling the downtown area a few times we finally gave up and said, "Oh, let's try Sullivan's." We're very glad we did. We ordered a flight of Sullivan's craft beers -- 12 in all, in huge "sample" glasses; and were quite pleased with the quality. (Our favorties were the Frankentrost ale, the Clueless Cream Porter and the barley wine.) I ordered a sampler of German sausages from Kern's, one of the local butcher shops...a generous quartet of sausages en brochette with crusty bread and brown mustard. My partner had the sausage and cheese sampler, which featured liverwurst and summer sauage with a horseradish-cheddar and a feta-jalapeno dip. We were so pleased with the appetizers that we decided not to order from the lunch menu! -- but we did decide to eat dinner at Sullivan's later in the day. We were not disappointed here either. My partner had chickens schnitzel -- really more of a chicken piccata -- very tender and lemony, with a generous sprinkinling of capers. I had chicken rouladen, a variation of German beef rouladen -- chicken breast rolled around a filling of seasoned bread and a dill pickle, the rouladen drizzled with a "Jagersossse" that I think was a reduction of mushroom, tomato paste and other savories. Both entrees were very good. The smashed poatoes that came with the meal were also good. Not a lot of vegetable choices -- I wound up with a fairly mundane lettuce salad. Service was decent -- at both meals the servers were incredibly young -- high school co-op young, it seemed -- and were a little rough around the edges, but otherwise polite and efficient. We also enjoyed the relative quiet, laid-back vibe of the restaurant. We'd eat here again.

Went here for a Wedding Rehearsal dinner. We were all in a nice private room with closed doors. They gave us a buffet with lasagna, pizza, salad and bread. I like the lasagna but thought the pizza was too garlicky. Like the place for events. Staff was kinda blahhh. Probably not a place I will ever actually go out to eat.

Good Beer! Food is good too! The Brewhause Nachos..........sinful. They are 78216 calories of goodness! Seasoned Waffle Fries, topped with ground beef, cheese sauce and all the nacho veggies. So bad, but so good with a beer and a group of friends!! Staff is good at recommending beers and getting you a sample to make sure you like what you order.

Excellent beers. This place is hit or miss with the crowd. They seem to get a lot of weddings/parties in here which can damper things down. On the other hand, the crowd that sits in the bar is usually friendly and the bartenders will let you sample anything (as they should). I'm fond of the red ale they make, though I don't believe they have it anymore because of the hops shortage. I would check this place out on a Saturday afternoon after golfing at the Fortress.

Good food, a nice buffet, and in-house beers including two stouts. Sullivan's makes a modest attempt to fit into German-crazed Frankenmuth, but emerges with its own identity, and I appreciated that.

We have been to Black Forest 2 times . Bartender heard us telling another couple we were headed eslewhere for dinner ....From that time on he was cool to us . Beer was not all that fresh but wasn't bad either . Have to agree with Jason B. we also miss Frankenmuth Brewery ,,,,
