I write this with a bit of hesitation, as it's almost like telling a secret that maybe should be kept a secret...plus I don't want the lines to be too long when I do make it back to Michigan during the summers...but here goes nothing. Miss Lisa's is sort of like taking a trip back in time to a simpler era. It's the friendly service, the hand-mixed flurries, the perfectly sculpted peak of a soft serve cone, and the flashback prices (which they actually add up right in front of you on paper instead of at a register or calculator)! Back when I was little and Miss Lisa's opened for the season, it was a sign that summer was right around the corner; and I'm sure that not much has changed. This is everything that an ice cream stand should be! Miss Lisa's is a small business that has been thriving for longer than I have, and I definitely blame this place for my chubby childhood/young adulthood. Sure, their ice cream isn't spun on site like Temptations downtown, but they have Hudsonville brand, and everything is clearly made with love. The soft serve is what calls to me anyhow, with their rotating soft serve of the week: Georgia Peach, Creme de Menthe, Lemon Custard, Strawberry, Black Cherry? Okay...I don't live in Ferrysburg anymore, but I know that the first four are correct. And they always have the traditional chocolate, vanilla, and vanilla/choco twisty. Do you want it hand-dipped in a vat of chocolate or cherry coating? Yep, they can do that too. Their banana splits are perfectly crafted and great for sharing, and the Hot Fudge Banana is a good alternative for the singles. Of course they have all the regular sundaes like hot fudge and chocolate syrup, butterscotch, caramel, strawberry and pineapple, but they also have things like the candy buster (like an unmixed flurry) and the peanut butter buster (like peanut parfait). I remember loving the glacier (I think it was called), which was soft serve ice cream covered in slushy. Back in the day they even used to have strawberry shortcake things made with donuts...but I can't confirm this is still happening. They also serve lunch-type food on the cheap like chili dogs and BBQ sandwiches, with milkshakes to wash everything down. Some final details about Miss Lisa's include the fact that you can tell all of their machines are cleaned frequently, because everything tastes so good. There is a small area with playground equipment for kids, and there is a large swing for families, friends or lovers to enjoy as well. They have plenty of picnic table space and parking never seems to really be a problem (I remember sometimes we would have to park in the bank lot across the street). I rarely eat dairy products, as they normally don't treat me too well internally, but Miss Lisa's for me is worth the pain for several minutes of pure nostalgic glee. So especially for those of you who can safely dabble in the dairy side of life to no ill effect, you must travel over the bridge from Grand Haven into Ferrysburg - it's one of the first things you'll see - and you must get ice cream NOW. Four stars, like for real.

Best ice cream a scoop could scoop. Whatever you buy, I guarantee your satisfaction. Cheap and a post-anything tradition for everybody. Just won the baseball game? Miss Lisa's. Just lost? Miss Lisa's. Opening night? Curtain call, then Miss Lisa's. No worry about taking the little kids and having to deal with impatient squirliness. Small swing set. Problem solved. Who knows? You might even meet Miss Lisa if you come at the right tome ;)

Fantastic little ice cream place. You can tell the owners put their heart and soul into this place. Great ice cream. Cozy little spot to sit and eat it. They even have a big play castle for the kids. Definitely the place to go if you're craving something sweet and cool to beat the summer heat.

Roast beef and cheese with pickles! Mmmm! Add chips and large diet, two for under $10! Good summer stuff.

Great prices, friendly service. A beach-town novelty. Great place to bring kids because there is a playground. Lots of things to chose from on the menu - not just ice cream but lunch options too!

Stopped by with my family for some ice cream. Unfortunately, in 2015 I don't always carry cash. I had to head down the road to a competitors because Miss Lisa doesn't accept American Expresss..or MasterCard...or Visa....or Discover...you get the idea. Cash only. Perhaps it adds to the old school vibe, but for me it added up to an inconvenience and ice cream for the family somewhere else.

Family owned small business, good ice cream at sensible prices. A Spring Lake tradition.

We love this quaint ice cream treat. They serve soft serve, hand-dipped ice cream, flavor burst, shakes, slushies, sandwiches and other treats. The serving sizes are generous at fair prices. The ice cream is tasty and we enjoy eating are treats outside on the chairs, swings and the play gym. Good people and good treats. Enjoy!

Nice place for a refreshing treat. Miss Lisa occasionally puts a coupon in the Grand Haven Tribune paper. Generally a 50 cent coupon. This is one of our favorite stops.

Cheapest place for ice cream. Nice selection of hard and soft ice cream. Long lines at times and slow service. They mix flurries with a knife - huh? :) Great inexpensuve place to take the whole family out for ice cream!

OK, if you are into sugar overload, order the large turtle sundae. Not a lot of soft serve ice cream in it, because there is so much hot caramel, hot chocolate & pecans... I don't think there can be much room left for ice cream. Delicious, and served by the owner. She has been a fixture here for years, and can whip up an order with the best of them. The chili dogs are great. I have never been disappointed with an order here. No credit cards or debit cards accepted here, this is a strictly cash only business.

As you know if you live in the area, the opening and closing of Miss Lisa's signals the changing of the seasons. It's that important. Their weekly special is always great. I love the lemon custard and my sister's fav is the georgia peach. They'll even dip your soft serve in chocolate for you. My all-time favorite thing to get is an awesome concoction with watermelon slushy and soft-serve vanilla ice cream (I'm a sucker for artificial watermelon flavor, we all have our quirks). My friend gets the banana split with chocolate ice cream, which is covered in toppings like peanuts and pineapple. Expect a line. It's totally worth it.

When I first moved to Spring Lake in 2009 I had heard that Miss Lisa's was the place to go. We went and it was fine. There were long lines, which are fine if you're waiting by the beach, or waiting for something really, really special. But Miss Lisa's isn't anything special. They offer up the usual seasonal mom & pop ice-cream shoppe fare, but the problem I find is that they weigh their ice-cream out so that a small is exactly 4 ounces - and in some cases, even less. Last year my daughter and I each ordered a small ice-cream and her cup had about twice the amount of ice-cream in it Mine was soft-serve, so it's lighter than the hard ice-cream my daughter chose. I took the cup to the window and told the older woman who works there that I thought there might be a discrepancy--I thought that she may have heard my order wrong and issued a kiddie scoop. She snapped at me. We have avoided the place ever since. Today, four of us went after dinner and we got small cones. One of the small scoops was very tiny and again, I took the cup to the window and asked the server if this was a proper small scoop. It was tiny - we joked around about how tiny it was, because all the others were bigger--not big, mind you--just bigger. The server told us that because there are lots of chunks in it the scoop will be smaller because each scoop is weighed - a small is 4 oz. And then, joy of joys! My daughter was a few bites into her scoop and there was a short, white hair. My daughter has dark brown hair, and she's 13 (no grays yet). I told her to show it to the servers. When she approached, she was confronted by the same older woman who snapped at me last year. The woman told my daughter that it came from the company that way and they can't control it. My daughter looked at me sadly--she would either have to eat it or throw it away. I took the container and approached the same woman. My exact words were: Finding a hair in your food isn't very fun. The woman repeated to me what she said to my daughter. I was pretty irritated and I said we wouldn't be coming back. She then yelled at us, saying she'd replace it. Her exact words and tone: FINE! I'LL GIVE YOU SOMETHING ELSE! WHAT DO YOU WANT! She replaced the ice-cream with a scoop of Mint-Chocolate Chip. She gave my daughter a much larger amount for some reason--maybe her way of apologizing--but I doubt it because when I thanked her she rolled her eyes at me and issued a flippant, "thank you" before walking away. When my friend asked for some napkins before we left she made a comment: Well at least I can do that right. Ha! We will not return. For a nicer view and better service, head to Dairy Treat on Harbour Drive in Grand Haven. I got a wonderful chocolate ice-cream soda there for about $3.50 and it was so big I couldn't finish it. Better yet, drive the extra 7 miles to Fruitport and go to Food and Ice-Cream. You can't even finish a small because it's HUGE!!!! And it costs about the same as Miss Lisa's. They also serve Hudsonville, just like Miss Lisa's, but they don't worry about pinching every penny. They give you so much ice-cream you can't believe your eyes. I swear! You will not be disappointed. It is worth the drive, especially if you have a lot of hungry, sugar-deprived kids to buy for. They also have a lot more flavors to choose from. The long lines are worth the wait, and they have a lovely backyard to hang out in.
