Let me just say that Debbie is so sweet and so knowledgable about their products. She can tell you all about their process, where they source their ingredients, and more. We went in for a tasting and their meads are a few of the best I've tasted. I'm no wine expert or mead expert, but the word full bodied comes to mind when I taste their mead. From the moment it hits your tongue to even after you've put your cup down. It was a great taste and a lovely lovely after taste that keeps me smacking my mouth. Keep in mind meads are usually sweet in nature and similar to a dessert wine. So if that is what you like, this place is right up your alley. They also have a small selection of food to eat while enjoying your mead. My husband was in love with their pretzel pulled pork slider. The texture of the pretzel bun was perfect and the sauce that came with it was just a great balance of flavor. They also have board game night here every first Wednesday of the month so if you wanted an excuse to come here (not that you really need one) come then.

Nice location with a great outdoor seating area. Came in with a large group to try mead for the first time. We all shared 2 flights and 1 mixed drink. The mead is super super sweet. Tasty but super sweet. Would be great mixed in a drink or in beer not alone. Loved the ginger mead and raspberry both had great flavor. Service was also great super nice people.

Stopped in while hopping around town with my girlfriend just to check it out plus she likes mead. Was warmly greeted as we walked in and engaged quite friendly. The building seemed more like a Saunders ice cream parlor than a place that makes honey induced alcohol. But we took a seat at the bar and the menu was pretty intriguing. I ordered the ginger mead which had Detroit's own Vernors included and it was gulpable! I could have slammed it and ordered another as the ginger really eased the general honey sweetness of the mead. Overall it was a pleasant experience and would recommend to anyone looking for a change of pace and some good homegrown mead.

So hey Ferndale, I'm not sure you're fully aware of what you have going on here, but you're basically the mead capital of the world now. I won't belabor Ken Schramm's credentials, but he knows a little bit about making mead. I had the opportunity to visit on a Thursday evening and I got to say hi to everybody and taste everything. The quality of the mead is really extraordinary. Huge quantities of extremely nice, locally sourced fruit goes into the mead. This is not easy or cheap to do. The production space is really tiny, the batch sizes are VERY small. It's a really good opportunity to get in on the ground floor with some investment quality bottles for your wine cellar. When you consider everything that goes into it, you realize what a great value it is for the price. These early batches are going to become very collectable going forward. Who will like this mead? Pretty much everybody, but specifically I would expect it to be popular among twenty-something women and craft beer lovers. Ferndale mixologists should also take note as Ken's mead would be a great start to many interesting cocktails. Mead is not a historical novelty. You don't have to be a Viking to drink it. Mead is modern, it is here and now. That being said, the American Craft Mead Movement is in it's Golden Age. The founders of the industry, people like Ken, are alive and creating new meads this very moment. It won't always be the way it is now. This is the very best time to get on board.

Mead and cider beers are my favorite. Everything here tasted great! The help was very nice and approachable. The location is great - lots of parking nearby and the store itself is so clean and well lit. They have two nice spacious bathrooms in the back. One men and one for women. The cost is a bit pricey but it so damn good.

Prior to coming to Schramm's this past weekend I had sadly never tasted mead! So this review is coming from a person who is comparing the mead here to absolutley nothing else. That said I love the meads I tasted, and will be back to enjoy more in the future! I tried the red mead flight. The flavors were so full bodied and fruity, you can taste the honey but not in an overly sweet way. Lets just say a new mead fan was born. The service was great too - our server was very knowledgeable.

This place is an absolute treasure and you must visit. Great place to stop for a drink with your date before or after your evening. They have a nice bar for solo diners and indoor and outdoor seating. The wait staff are all very knowledgeable about mead and are passionate about what they serve. They check each glass for quality before they pour. They have fantastic small plates. They also have coffee!! I enjoyed the pretzel pulled pork which was delicious and smoky. It isn't uncommon for you to interact with the owners. Ken is a mead genius and his wife is wicked hospitable and very charming. I love coming here and know great things (and drinks) are in the future for Ferndale foodies and mead lovers alike.

THIS is the kind of mead I've been hunting for. Ken is the mead master here and everyone in the place is very knowledgeable about the product, and actually, the process. Ken knows what he's doing and as others have mentioned, literally wrote the book. While I wish they made a plain standard unflavored mead, I'm perfectly content to sip the ginger mead all day. However, if you're looking for something flavored don't be fooled by the seeming simplicity of the flavors here; they will hit you over the head with depth and layers until you just about fall off your chair. They also make mixed drinks out of the mead. I love the fact that Ken hand selects all of the fruit for the mead and sources it as locally as possible. They also have some pretty stellar food pairings here and a weekly trivia night. If you've never tried mead before this is the place to start.

Now this is mead. I've only had it at Ren Fest before and it was B Nektar which I thought was really frickin sweet. The mead here is a totally different experience. You can smell every ingredient beautifully and upon the first sip, your taste buds go nuts. Instantly the grass is greener and you're making more money and life is wonderful. Because of delicious mead. The workers there are crazy knowledgeable and I love the petite size of the place, it feels cozy and intimate. They have a menu but I'm a vegan so that didn't really work. Didn't care. Just ordered more mead lol.

Schramm's Mead makes some of the best honey wine in the world. If you are a local you are lucky to have a world class meadery in your backyard. I'm from the west coast and made a 4 hour detour to visit Schramm's Mead. The staff was wonderful. They answered all my questions, and took care of my wife and I. The menu of meads, cocktails, and food pairings was very well put together and made it feel like an adventure for your palate. I won't list any favorites because everything I had was a favorite. Just go taste and enjoy the experience. Highly, highly recommended.

Mead..mead..mead .. .at it's absolute finest. There's a new movement of meaderies popping up everywhere and experimenting with flavors, spices, hops, carbonated vs still,. etc... but to me mead is meant to be enjoyed as you would any other wine... with proper pairing, with proper serving, and in a relaxed environment so time can stop dead in its tracks, and you can enjoy the wonderful experience that is good mead, and in this case, probably the best mead you'll ever have. Ken has his mead-making process down to the most meticulous science, from the kind of honey used, where it's from, it's freshness condition, etc... to the fresh berries and other ingredients that make part of his craft. A few months back I became a Mazer Club member and just the other day I picked up a case of Ginger and Statement to enjoy today, tomorrow, and a few to let age. For a couple years already I've been on a personal mission to try every single mead that's available to me, and I've come across many different kinds from different regions of the country and across the globe. I've yet to come across anything that compares to Schramm's, without a doubt the finest most delectable mead in the world. Having stated that, my only critique is all of Schramm's meads are the more complex mead styles, melomels, combination thereof, etc... wonderful and passionate, but all with ginger, berries, etc.. I look forward to the day when they decide to make a traditional still mead, with nothing other than pure honey, and let that character breathe and show me its wonder. So if this traditional mead ends up not as complex as the Heart of Darkness or the Statement, to me that's ok... a still, traditional, pure-honey and nothing-but-honey mead is still my absolute favorite.. to me it's poetry in a glass. I'm certain that day will come, and that day will change my life.

Ken Schramm long ago set the standard for mead making- literally writing the book. Finally, he is selling to the general public. The meads are lovingly handcrafted works of art. They are fruit (or Ginger) intensive, made from the finest fruits and honey to be had. Yes, they are priced higher than other local meads. But these meads are much more akin to fine wine than to craft beer. The only other commercial meads I have had that approach this level are from Moonlight Meadery, in New Hampshire. The space is warm and sophisticated, and the small pairings are a lovely addition. Please note: this is a tasting room. It is not a bar or a restaurant.

If you are coming here, you probably already understand the man behind the mead. Mr. Schramm is frequently here working his magic and he is more than happy to engage in conversation about his latest meads, or just to talk in general. I first had their "official" mead at Winezilla a few weeks prior to the official opening of the tasting room, and I got to talk to Ken there, get a few bottles of Ginger Mead and a copy of his book. I live in California, so I only have access when I'm in Michigan. I was just in Michigan again this last week, so I finally had a chance to stop in and check out the new place. Well, it's fabulous. It's small inside, so I imagine it's crowded. However they had a premier flight that even gave a pour of their famous Heart of Darkness. It was fantastic, as were the other meads I tried that evening. I did not get to try any of their pairing plates or desserts, but I will next time. Ken and family are all doing great stuff here. I happily brought back at least one bottle of everything you produce to SoCal with me (except Raspberry and The Statement Reserve, although I did get to try SR at a tasting... excellent!) and I look forward to my next trip out that way!

its alright. the space is very loud, like really loud. they could use some sound dampeners and something soft on the walls. the mead, unfortunately, wasn't as good as bnektar. its also double the price. the price was what i found to be the most unsettling. i found the ginger mead very delicious and the blackberry mead to taste like robitussin. overall, i think i will return and i may increase my rating. they had some meat and cheese plates that seemed fun. it was their first weekend, so a solid three really isn't that bad. Love, juston

I hate to give only three stars for something trivial like decor... But really? I was expecting to find myself in a Viking style bar resembling the inside of a castle. Not something that resembles the inside of the coffee beanery. Actually the coffee beanery may have more ambient lighting. We had a night planned around mead flights and sampling with friends which ended up lasting no more than 20 minutes. Don't expect a buzz from the flight. Positives are that the mead was pleasant- the heart of darkness is amazing. The service is good. But if your looking for an experience. No. Maybe if your a waspy 50 year old then this is a good vibe.

We are lucky to have a master mead maker in Michigan. We ordered both flight offerings which allowed us to try everything available. Mead is an acquired taste, so if you're not sure go for the flight first to try all the different varieties. I really enjoyed the blackberry and The Heart of Darkness. One thing that is not evident by visiting is that the owners grow and harvest their own fruit ( schrammsmead.com/meads-2 ) We did not eat, however, they do offer cheese/snack parings along with a dessert menu. All in all, a great visit and looking forward to returning to try the food.

I've been meaning to get here since I first saw posts for this place on Yelp and now that I have I can say it's worthy of five stars easily. A little west of Planavon and next to the Bangkok Café, Schramm's is unassuming and reminded me of a winery tasting room. The bar area is comfortable and open and they have a few other spots (couches and such) adjacent to 9 mile to sit and sip. The shoppe was clean and crisp looking with a spotless kitchen, set up to make mead of course. Their product was all wonderful from those I tried having had their flight of three (Blackberry sec, Ginger and Cherry?) and then their three berry flight. I really enjoyed each of them. They have a food menu that I'll try at some point but the five stars goes to the ladies running the show. Allison, Debbie and Kelsey all of which were fantastically friendly and engaging. The experience was a fun one and left me looking forward to coming back both to enjoy another glass of their nectar, to play some trivia on Trivia Thursdays and to pick up some mead to take home and cook with. Definitely a very cool new spot to check out in Ferndale.

too sweet, upscale, pricey, and impersonal. i was there a couple months ago to try out their product since i already love mead. i usually like sweet tasting drinks but their meads where out of this world far too sweet. just a hangover waiting to happen (if i was willing to blow that much cash to even get a buzz there).

It is a great venue with amazing mead. I am a long time mead lover, and finding good mead is exceedingly difficult. Alison was great and the experience was the highlight of my trip.

Went there opening night and met Mr. Schramm himself. He was very nice and willing to talk to us about the process of making meed even though it was busy. The meed itself is unlike anything I've ever had before. It's sweat, but not like a foofoo drink sweat. The buzz is fun, too. The couple of times we've back since the waitstaff has always been really nice (even the one time I was way to drunk and probably should of been in bed at that point) and the mead has always been delicious. I'm happy to have that little gem of a drink spot in my little funky town.

Mead is growing popular by the day and with this new meadery, the world is about to experience the best mead in the world and made by 'the mead god' himself Ken Schramm. He's always walking around at night when they're open, so make sure to stop by day hello and try everything. My favorite is a cold glass of the Raspberry, Kens first mead that he made!

The complaints that I see here are for people that associate mead to the Middle Ages. Schramm's is as far from that as you can get. It's more of an upscale, wine bar that happens to make incredible mead than anything else. They've got an excellent mead selection and good tapas-style food in a very laid back setting. I've come here for both dates and business meetings and I've always left very impressed.
